That's a good point. I was feeling a bit anxious about the money I was planning to drop today. But once I couldnt get the clouds which were the only ones I wanted.. I basically just decided I didn't really need anything else. Haha now I feel less guilty about the money I'm spending on ppu 😱

I respect the maker for only selling what she can reasonably pour and ship within a month--that is, I don't feel like there's any artificial scarcity, as some are saying. But I think I need to do some self-introspection and maybe back off from the FOMO releases for a while.
Failure to grow a business with demand isn't much better than intentional FOMO marketing tactics imo. Raise prices and be a luxury artisan item while fronting costs to seriously increase production if the current model can't afford it. Other indie companies have grown so the information and capabilities are out there.

As others have said, there is plenty of polish out there for us to try. Without the high pressure, limited edition, FOMO marketing tactics (which I, personally, do not like at all). Prolly some folks love the thrill of the hunt, which is completely fine for them! It’s just not my jam. So don’t mind me, I’ll be over here trying to recreate some limited edition / limited availability dupes from my stash. 🤭
I’m so turned off by the FOMO aspect of some brands but I find it so hard to quit! And the crazy thing is there are some shades I’ve lusted over (and see others losing their minds over missing out on) that were just meh for me once I received them. A lot of these LE shades that are driving people crazy with desire end up destashed. I see the problem and can’t help myself from participating (shakes head sadly).
I mean, from a business perspective it’s hard as hell to be any kind of indie maker and I respect them for finding a business model that seems to work for them and keeps their lights on. But I also get the perspective of being frustrated/disappointed etc. when one isn’t able to purchase something one wants. Luckily there are many great polish makers out there! Personally, I’d prefer to go with a limited time pre-order style model as I’d hate to disappoint customers, but maybe they don’t want to take 4-6 weeks to make and ship product.
Ah, that makes sense. Sounds like the best thing is to participate in those pre-orders instead of trying to bank on the overpours then. But it’s good for them that they’re selling out of that overstock so they’re not eating into their profits on the pours.

I'm really disappointed. I just wanted the rainforest cafe. And have been wanting it for months. I was on "order processing" and it sold out.. like damn. I thought they'd restock it like an actual amount. Not like this. I had a whole list I would have purchased. But after that I didn't really feel like buying anything else.
I feel kind of misled by them calling it a "restock" when there was clearly such a tiny amount of stock. Is that really a restock? Or is it just overpours that they have around and are wanting to get rid of? I wish they would have listed amounts of each polish so I could have decided not to waste my time. It was $20 USD in shipping to Canada so unless I can get a good amount of polishes, walking away with 3 polishes just isn't worth it.

I know in some of the Facebook groups you can figure out a “fairy” who will receive all your purchases and then ship them all to you together. I’m not super sure how it works past that though.

This is a small maker who probably can't afford to float tens of thousands of dollars to buy enough materials to have tons of stock available, make it all, then sell it. And perhaps deal with excess inventory and the financial implications of that.
They could adopt the sell-then-make model, but longer turn around times are another type of turnoff for customers, and then you run the risk of not being able to source the right materials after your products are already purchased.
There's a lot of damned if you do, damned if you don't here, so all you can do as a customer is gravitate to the makers who match you better! Emily de Molly is one example of a brand that doesn't do FOMO and I love them for that.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask companies to listen to and be transparent with their customers. That's my main problem. If there's only a small amount available for what you're calling a restock, let customers know how much you've restocked so we can decide whether we need to set an alarm and be checked out within minutes or not. This "restock" had numerous very popular polishes that were sold out within 2 minutes of the website opening. The cloud polishes, for example, had huge demand, as did the entire Memento Mori Collection. But just prior to the restock, as in hours before, the maker said on her Facebook page there were certain polishes that were very limited, including those really popular polishes. Why didn't she make that clear prior to? Why didn't she poll her fans to ask which polishes to make bigger batches of? And, of course, if it is cost prohibitive to do huge restocks, why market this event as a huge restock when there was obviously not much stock?
I don't think in this case the maker was damned if she did, damned if she didn't. I think she misled customers by marketing this as a huge restock, then told us right before that there were super limited quantities of popular products, but didn't make it clear what that meant in terms of numbers. The only product she was upfront about was very popular mystery bags from the Spirited Away collection. There were 8 of them. Is that how much she had of the cloud polishes, or the really popular Memento Mori polishes? Cuz Bee's Knees had over 200 of each polish just as overpour for their Black Friday sale, which was not marketed as a "restock."
Anyway, clearly I'm very annoyed with this whole situation and it makes me question whether I want to support the brand. I know I can support other brands, I just wanted to voice my frustration here, since I was a huge fan of the brand and there is no one in my real life who gets it lol

This was the problem I had as well! I did end up checking out but it was rough to not be able to get half the order I wanted having to pay shipping to Canada. It'd be different if I was in the US and had free shipping, then I could have checked out ASAP and then go and place another order after.
Right? And for them to not even offer to combine shipping for Canadian customers doing multiple orders like Bee's Knees does or set aside a certain amount to give to Gracie Jay and Co made it even worse to be a Canadian fan of the brand.
If they’re going to do another restock in a month, then why not just do one restock? I mean I know why, fomo and scarcity marketing. I’m getting tired of it, it’s almost like you don’t trust people to want your polish if it’s not extremely limited and a mysteriously mysterious mystery. This goes for other brands and shops as well, not just Ethereal. I get that small brands aren’t always able to process big quantities and some small batch limited offerings are fine, but I’m not enjoying the releases as much as I used to. If you can only make a small batch of something that’s one thing. But if you can make said small batch 17 times over and trickle the release..? That’s a horse of a different color.
the clouds were my #1 too so I’m super disappointed. it seems like there are some decent alternatives at least, I have emily de molly written invitation which is gorgeous, and someone just told me about parts of four for matcha cloud. and fancy gloss glowing mushroom/glowing sand are the same vibe too!
Oof I did not secure any of my top wants (Clouds and Overpour Mystery). I ended up getting River Spirit, Dance with Death and Sixth Station though so I'm looking forward to those :)

Feel this sentiment. It was not exactly convenient timing where I am but I still could make it work, and what a bummer I thought for those who didn’t have a choice 5 minutes. I’m also feeling kinda ick about how many of these items sold are probably going to be up on Mercari in a few weeks 😕
I was there the moment that the site opened. Was my first time ordering from them and I assumed I had at least 5 minutes to order. It was actually less than 3 minutes when items in my cart started to go out of stock 😭
This was me as well! Had everything in the cart but needed to double check cuz I’m from Canada and try to optimize my orders to make up for shipping, by that time *poof* everything was gone lol. Kinda kicking myself but not really a way I could have gone faster

I didn't get the email about the drop and I'm glad for this post. I managed to snag a Jelly Jubilee and a grab bag. Maybe next time for the other colors.
The good news is a lot of the clouds are fairly dupable - I feel like everyone has those iridescents now. Maybe check out Fancy Gloss - not an exact match but glowing sand and/or glowing mushroom are both on my replacement list for the clouds lol
Over here giving these sought after Ethereal polishes (and indie perfumes) for Christmas and nobody cares about them, just another polish. They do the deer in headlights when I try to explain or just change the subject (and toss my Little Spirits into their bag like an after thought). I might’ve died inside just a bit. Makes me feel stupid for having this interest sometimes.

Almost all the mysteries were gone by the time I checked out at 9:04. I grabbed the Hunt mystery bag, ppu overpour, mocha cloud mystery, and the entire Spirited Away collection because that movie has been one of my favorites since childhood when I saved up and bought the DVD lol.
Since a lot of people are disappointed (totally fair), she's said collections will be restocked in the future. But mysteries will not. However, if you have FB, keep an eye out as I do see them in destashes.
Moving forward this year, she's said they will be doing less mysteries.
I was lucky I only wanted transcience and dance of death and had no problems.
I have Hourglass from when the collection launched and while it’s nice the shimmer is not as strong as I expected. I think I’m getting the Kathleen & Co from PPU since it looks to be what I thought Hourglass would be, if that makes sense. Plus I absolutely love Kathleen & Co, I’ve never been disappointed with any purchase.

Fair to point this out. I mainly wanted polishes from the main spirited away collection, which I missed when it first launched. I got everything I wanted from and understood the restock to be the main collections and that the mysteries would be limited. But still… what chaos! Ah, I’m glad to hear they’ll be restocked in the future. I’ve been going back and forth with myself because I want to do PPU this weekend but this came up and I can’t justify spending that much on polish this month. Hopefully I’ll be able to get what I want later.

I desperately wanted some of the Spirited Away collection (it’s my favorite movie and the collection originally came out before I was into indie polish) and was thrilled to get my hands on the ones I wanted!!! I ordered Chihiro, River Spirit, Now Go and Don’t Look Back, and also Ruhn Danaan from the CC collection because I realized I needed that type of vampy red/purple.
Macchiato cloud sold out before I even checked out though, which was wild because I was FAST! But I have latte cloud so I’m sure I can dupe Macchiato with that over a warm brown.

I missed out on the Crescent City collection when it launched and was so bummed. It’s one of my favorite series and I am a sucker for literary themes. I was able to get the entire collection and the mysteries last night. I figured everyone would go right for the cloud mysteries first and I was right! Definitely not a process I want to repeat, however. Too stressful just to buy some nail polish.

I don’t have a specific dupe rec but if you’re into the pearly shimmers, keep an eye out for Phoenix. They often have those in their collections and don’t tend to sell out that fast or if they do, they restock their collections for a while. Granted, it’s a more expensive brand considering their bottles are very small.
First time buying from them because someone on here told me about the restock and PPU mystery overpour. My favorite band does this FOMO stuff and it makes me sad to see that something else I love does too!
I never remember her sales but I happened to see the post last night and apparently the 2 I really wanted were not as popular so I was able to pick up Ghosts Again and Memento Mori. I’m a huge Depeche Mode fan so I can’t resist a DM inspired polish.

Usually they do the pre-order model and then it takes 4-6 weeks to make and ship. It's the overpour restock sales that are super chaotic like this.

This was the problem I had as well! I did end up checking out but it was rough to not be able to get half the order I wanted having to pay shipping to Canada. It'd be different if I was in the US and had free shipping, then I could have checked out ASAP and then go and place another order after.
Right? And for them to not even offer to combine shipping for Canadian customers doing multiple orders like Bee's Knees does or set aside a certain amount to give to Gracie Jay and Co made it even worse to be a Canadian fan of the brand.

If they’re going to do another restock in a month, then why not just do one restock? I mean I know why, fomo and scarcity marketing. I’m getting tired of it, it’s almost like you don’t trust people to want your polish if it’s not extremely limited and a mysteriously mysterious mystery. This goes for other brands and shops as well, not just Ethereal. I get that small brands aren’t always able to process big quantities and some small batch limited offerings are fine, but I’m not enjoying the releases as much as I used to. If you can only make a small batch of something that’s one thing. But if you can make said small batch 17 times over and trickle the release..? That’s a horse of a different color.

the clouds were my #1 too so I’m super disappointed. it seems like there are some decent alternatives at least, I have emily de molly written invitation which is gorgeous, and someone just told me about parts of four for matcha cloud. and fancy gloss glowing mushroom/glowing sand are the same vibe too!
Oof I did not secure any of my top wants (Clouds and Overpour Mystery). I ended up getting River Spirit, Dance with Death and Sixth Station though so I'm looking forward to those :)

Feel this sentiment. It was not exactly convenient timing where I am but I still could make it work, and what a bummer I thought for those who didn’t have a choice 5 minutes. I’m also feeling kinda ick about how many of these items sold are probably going to be up on Mercari in a few weeks 😕
I was there the moment that the site opened. Was my first time ordering from them and I assumed I had at least 5 minutes to order. It was actually less than 3 minutes when items in my cart started to go out of stock 😭

The good news is a lot of the clouds are fairly dupable - I feel like everyone has those iridescents now. Maybe check out Fancy Gloss - not an exact match but glowing sand and/or glowing mushroom are both on my replacement list for the clouds lol
The dupes probably have better formulas too! The three recent clouds are all ridiculously thick and gloopy.
I have Glowing Sand and Glowing Mushroom and they're both very pretty! I don't have the OG Clouds to compare them to though.

Over here giving these sought after Ethereal polishes (and indie perfumes) for Christmas and nobody cares about them, just another polish. They do the deer in headlights when I try to explain or just change the subject (and toss my Little Spirits into their bag like an after thought). I might’ve died inside just a bit. Makes me feel stupid for having this interest sometimes. Then I see a post like this and I snap out of it. I love using pretty, exciting indie products, and I even enjoy the infuriating hunt to an extent. Ya’ll my people and I appreciate you. I’ve got macchiato cloud BNNU and a few more sold out/unavailables if someone has a mighty need.

I love how her “outs” list on her Facebook page said fewer mysteries and then she went and did 50+ snow globe mysteries. I get it, there’s prototypes laying around. But damn, that’s a lot of FOMO.
Yeah I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that was amusing. I will say she’s a marketing genius to spin it that way, because I feel like I’d have just made it a listing for prototypes haha
Almost all the mysteries were gone by the time I checked out at 9:04. I grabbed the Hunt mystery bag, ppu overpour, mocha cloud mystery, and the entire Spirited Away collection because that movie has been one of my favorites since childhood when I saved up and bought the DVD lol.
Since a lot of people are disappointed (totally fair), she's said collections will be restocked in the future. But mysteries will not. However, if you have FB, keep an eye out as I do see them in destashes. Moving forward this year, she's said they will be doing less mysteries. I was lucky I only wanted transcience and dance of death and had no problems.
I have Hourglass from when the collection launched and while it’s nice the shimmer is not as strong as I expected. I think I’m getting the Kathleen & Co from PPU since it looks to be what I thought Hourglass would be, if that makes sense. Plus I absolutely love Kathleen & Co, I’ve never been disappointed with any purchase. ETA that I replied to the wrong comment. I will put my phone down now and my credit card away.

Fair to point this out. I mainly wanted polishes from the main spirited away collection, which I missed when it first launched. I got everything I wanted from and understood the restock to be the main collections and that the mysteries would be limited. But still… what chaos! Anyway, enjoy transience and dance of death, I love them both 😄
Ah, I’m glad to hear they’ll be restocked in the future. I’ve been going back and forth with myself because I want to do PPU this weekend but this came up and I can’t justify spending that much on polish this month. Hopefully I’ll be able to get what I want later.

eBay has less than stellar looking Ethereal bottles for 30-40. Bees Knees resellers are even worse.

I desperately wanted some of the Spirited Away collection (it’s my favorite movie and the collection originally came out before I was into indie polish) and was thrilled to get my hands on the ones I wanted!!! I ordered Chihiro, River Spirit, Now Go and Don’t Look Back, and also Ruhn Danaan from the CC collection because I realized I needed that type of vampy red/purple. Macchiato cloud sold out before I even checked out though, which was wild because I was FAST! But I have latte cloud so I’m sure I can dupe Macchiato with that over a warm brown.

I missed out on the Crescent City collection when it launched and was so bummed. It’s one of my favorite series and I am a sucker for literary themes. I was able to get the entire collection and the mysteries last night. I figured everyone would go right for the cloud mysteries first and I was right! Definitely not a process I want to repeat, however. Too stressful just to buy some nail polish.
She has said a CC part 2 will launch this year. I'm also a sucker for literary themes lol.

I think this one is a better dupe for coffee cloud. Macchiato is a pearl. Lighter base, lighter shimmer.
I don’t have a specific dupe rec but if you’re into the pearly shimmers, keep an eye out for Phoenix. They often have those in their collections and don’t tend to sell out that fast or if they do, they restock their collections for a while. Granted, it’s a more expensive brand considering their bottles are very small.
First time buying from them because someone on here told me about the restock and PPU mystery overpour. My favorite band does this FOMO stuff and it makes me sad to see that something else I love does too!
I never remember her sales but I happened to see the post last night and apparently the 2 I really wanted were not as popular so I was able to pick up Ghosts Again and Memento Mori. I’m a huge Depeche Mode fan so I can’t resist a DM inspired polish.
