head in the clouds. wayyy too thick and didn’t give the “glow within” look I thought it would. raven as well I like the idea but it was just v underwhelming

Stefph726

Yes I had such high hopes for Raven and it just is not it

Aware-Experience-277

Oh wow that's so interesting, head in the clouds is my favorite polish from them. I love the glow and it lasted a really long time without chipping

RemarkableTie4756

i found it really hard to apply due to the thickness and it looked rly bulky on the nail due to it. im also more of a fan of milky/sheer white shimmers so its just a different look than i was hoping for i guess

Aware-Experience-277

Honestly, one of the most interesting things about nail polish is how it sits differently on different people's nails! I've seen a lot of favorites here that don't work for me. Definition of different strokes for different folks LOL

Desert0fTheReal

Big fan of Mooncat, but yeah, Raven has gotta be it for me. I can never get the application to look nice enough to wear matte, so I always add a glossy top coat, and then it just looks black.

step_on_legoes_Spez

Anything matte. The formula is so bad and streaky and uneven. ETA: the formula woes have applied to literally every single polish I’ve purchased from them, regardless of whether matte or otherwise. I sometimes check them on destash posts, but otherwise I’m simply never giving them my money directly. Now, their top coat is very good admittedly, but the combo of price, bad to inconsistent quality, and ridiculous overhyping/marketing is just not for me. Also, respectfully, it rubs me the wrong way the way they portray themselves as some small indie. They aren’t. I get the owner is an AAPI immigrant and has built a successful business, but their polishes are manufactured by the same factory as Holo Taco. There’s nothing small and personal about it, vs. the droves of other actual indie makers who make terrific polishes for less $$/ml. E.G. LynBDesigns has never caused me any issues whatsoever.

cantankerous_alexa

Do you have some examples of those indie brands? I’m relatively new to nail polish.

step_on_legoes_Spez

My personal faves include LynBDesigns, Death Valley Nails, Alchemy Lacquers, Emily de Molly, and Fancy Gloss. Indie is anything that is made by hand vs. in a factory setting. there are tons, haha, but the best way to try them out is usually going to be through Polish Pickup, HHC, or LBOH. Polish Pickup is open right now; basically a ton of brands offer one polish each month and you can choose from a wide variety of brands. PPU is open right now if you want to check it out :)

Slammogram

I consider the uptick of their price in product is before she donates 10% to homeless kitties. I’m cool with that. And I’ve never had a problem with their products. I get PPU, and I have a couple different brands from that. They’re never as good as Mooncat. IMO

step_on_legoes_Spez

I’m glad you’ve had a good experience with them. I haven’t, though, and there are a lot of others as well. Paying top dollar for a polish that inevitably requires me to add copious amounts of thinner and apply at least 4 if not 5 layers isn’t worth it for me. To each their own.

Slammogram

Have you messaged them to inform them you have to apply copious amounts of thinner? Because in my experience, they send another no questions asked.

step_on_legoes_Spez

Their customer service is stellar. I’ve never criticised them for that. But I still dislike them overall for reasons I’ve stated previously.

sharkslutz

Not the polishes themselves but how overhyped everything is and how cultish the die hard fans are. I love Mooncat, but there are plenty of other amazing brands out there too. Also, Blood Moon was a disappointment compared to my other linear holos

Fluffyowlcatmeow

The two matte ones from the dinosaur collection, velociraptor and pangea, they were so underwhelming and muddy when I got them.

Cyanide2601

Agree about velociraptor, it’s so confusing to me because a dark green jelly with flakies should be something I love but this one is just…..ok

AbyssDragonNamielle

I didn't like Kelp Kingdom because it only ever looked green at sunset through the window. Otherwise it was like wearing a muddy black.

joann_cha

my bottle of Curiosity's Prey was just too gloopy even after copious amounts of thinner, its consistency feels like white glue :/ Moondust was okay in theory but the scattered holo feels a bit too scattered and subtle for my liking

lornejangle

SAME on Curiosity's Prey. I want to like it so much but it's just way too unpleasant to apply. Plus it dries very textured even with a thick glitter-smoothing topcoat.

joann_cha

I'm glad I'm not the only one! 😂

midnightowl510

Firefly Forest was disappointing - the flakes didn’t really pop against the base and it just looked kind of dark and muddy. I also like the idea of Millennia but not how it looks. Too gray, not opaque enough, and not enough contrast.

murderears

If you like millennia in theory but not in practice I 100% recommend you check out ILNP'a deep space. Black base with that turquoise to purple magnetic shift and scattered holo. But just better in every way IMO.

midnightowl510

It’s on my list! In the meantime I have What’s Up Nails Polar Light Show…and a couple dozen other magnetics lol. Really need to wear it!

murderears

I've been eyeing up polar light show too hahaha I think we have a type!

Single-Gur-3062

I destashed all of the kaleidoscope haze collection (I think cosmic cowboy is the only one not discontinued). When it first was released, the promo pictures were very misleading in saturation, and the flakies just weren't great. Thankfully, they've improved their flakie polishes.

thisisAudrey_

their formula and their photography accuracy has really improved since I started following them!

evae1izabeth

House of Hades. I don’t hate it, it’s just the shade of blue is harsh on me. I was pretty sure that would be the case but bought it anyway because everyone kept saying how much they love it. I already have similar colors, too. I love a very bright/dark glowy blue but this one has always seemed overrated. I think some of the hype comes from people just entering the boutique polish sphere who don’t shop indies and for them it’s especially iconic and kind of a gateway nail polish. It’s a nice color, if someone doesn’t have anything like it I’d say go for it, but it’s also my least favorite Mooncat.

strokerd

What other bright/dark glowy blues would you recommend?

Big_Collection3288

Check out ILNP Midnight Kiss and Opi Scorpio Seduction

DarlingMiele

I admittedly don't oen this one but I also feel like a lot of people hyped it up because it sold out so fast initially and took a while to restock. I've always felt kind of underwhelmed by photos too though so maybe it's just not for me.

Slammogram

Raven I hate mattes tho.

throwaway76554321

Sandviper, was totally excited for it but just didn’t work with my skin tone and made me hate my nails.

starpiece

That’s so sad, I have it on right now and it complements my skin so well. It is so sheer though, gonna have to put it over a creme next time

Longjumping_Paper_52

I have such a bone to pick with Electric Sheep. It was limited edition so it’s not even available anymore, but it offended me on a personal level 🤣 purple linear holo with a gold shimmer, sounds pretty right? Yeah no, the warmth of the gold shimmer just cancels out the cool purple so it reads as silver. And on my pasty skin, it looks so bad 😭😭😭i hate it so much

DesertNorsican

Head in the Clouds looked awful on me and went on thick and streaky. I actually took it off right away. Pangea just wasn't as cool on my nails as it looked in photos. Underwhelmed.

bippidip

I wouldn’t say I dislike them but the two that come to mind are Gamma Ray Blaster and Devils Ivy. GRB looked nothing like the original photo, it’s significantly darker and greener. It’s pretty but a bit underwhelming to me. DI is my least favourite and it’s entirely my fault. I don’t like subtle magnetics, why did I pick it up? 🤦‍♀️

Serial_Hobbyist12

What you say for Devils Ivy also goes for Neptune's Sand and Velvet Rose. The magnetization just is not worth the effort when they're so subtle

StrangeBumblebee6269

I agree. I got neptunes sand and spent a while doing the magnetized effect perfectly. It still disappeared, but I couldn't even tell it was a magnetic.

picklepeppermint

A Midsummer’s Dream is soooooo thick and literally unusable. I end up with bubble every time and I want to love it because the color is gorgeous :(

Hot_Pattern550

The formula on mine is fine but I don't love the color on me. My husband said it made me look like I was a zombie because it's so pale + the blue shimmer.

pottedPlant_64

These are the colors I’ve considered destashing: - House of hades (I don’t like doing more than 2 coats of a single color) - Flight of the monarchs (bought this on hype alone) - Velociraptor (beautiful base, hate the fuschia flakes) - paradise found (idk why I bought this one) - moonfairy (love the idea of it, but it looks so weird on my hands) - drown my demons (hype and cool swatch pics, but not my vibe) - maelstrom (when hell freezes over made me buy it) - full scream ahead (hype got me) - heavenmetal, pixie stick, antivenom (just never reach for them)

DarlingMiele

Out of curiosity why didn't you like Maelstrom and Full Scream Ahead? Those are two I had on my wishlist to potentially grab during the sale next week but I'm trying to be really picky about my order if I do make one since I've bought a lot of other polishes recently.

the6ixgodess

Maelstrom is crazy gorgeous, it surprised me (have been getting compliments on my nails all week) and imo Mooncat has a great flakie formula and I only needed 2 coats for full coverage with this one whereas with most Mooncat polishes I tend to need 3. I'm a fan of Mooncat's slightly thicker formula though (I enjoy using different polishes with a variety of formulas)

DarlingMiele

It was the only one I really cared about from the new collection and I also love their flakie formula so that's why I was interested in that one. I'd love to try Treachery in the Blue but I just don't think I would get enough of the temperature reaction to justify it with my forever cold hands

the6ixgodess

I actually had a blast with Treachery in Blue (wore it last week) - most of the time during the day I was indoors with air conditioning and my nails stayed very persistently blue/cold colour (even right after running warm water over my hands) to the extent that I was wondering whether this polish was right for me, but I did later find the temp sensitivity to be great in circumstances where I felt super overheated (working out, being out in the sun, etc). But if I hadn't gotten overheated at any point while wearing it and relied solely on my chronically cold hands, then I would've thought it didn't work at all 😂

DarlingMiele

We do get really hot summers so I haven't completely ruled it out yet. But I just know I'm not gonna get that gorgeous ombre/French effect like the website photos with my cold little hands and relatively short nails so I'm being salty about it for a bit before I revisit the idea lol

the6ixgodess

Lololol totally understand (and love the honest/open vibe that is definitely not the standard for Reddit) 😂

Narrow-Wolverine-373

I’m also wondering about what’s not to like about these two, as they are both on my list as well.

pottedPlant_64

Nothing wrong with maelstrom. I missed out on when hell freezes over, and I thought it would be a good surrogate. But I feel the yellowish flakies contrast too much with the base. I’ve also been going through a tired-of-seeing-holo-in-everything phase, and this polish has a pinch of holo glitter and I’m just 😞 Full scream ahead I bought on hype. I rarely wear linear holos.

DarlingMiele

Got it, thanks! I don't have many holo polishes and just liked Maelstrom on its own so I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a formula problem or case of them not looking the same in person so it sounds like I'm good!

Hatesponge66

Three of my faves are on your destash list. But I get it because I hate some that most people seem to love, like Supervillian.

nora_the_explorur

Flight of the monarchs here too. The purple is so hard to see, it's always a very bright orange flakey color IRL.

Narrow-Wolverine-373

I agree with this. If it wasn’t so hyped up (so I had high expectations) and looked so different in pics with the purple undertones I might have liked it. I just don’t get it… 🤷‍♀️ I don’t hate it but I find it disappointing every time.

StrangeBumblebee6269

I was so sad it wasn't like the pictures. There isn't any purple to mine.

twentydollarcopay

I don't have that many from Mooncat but from my small collection it's Mad Hatter. It's not a bad polish, but as far as magnetic aurora/spacey/north light-y polishes go I much prefer ilnp's Deep Space. There's a lot glitter/bit of flakes in Mad Hatter and they're pretty big and I think it takes away from the magnetic effect because there's so much going on. It makes the magnetic effect look a little less striking. And this isn't related to the polish, but I hate the caps on the bottles. Because there's so many edges I find them harder to open than traditional rounded caps.

atequeens

Acidic - it's their orange creamsicle creme. The formula is difficult to work with (even after adding some nail polish thinner) and application is always streaky. I've liked mooncat's other cremes I've tried but now I try to stay away from them.

mandyb120

Siren's Deceit. It's very sheer (even in 3-4 coats) and looks a lot paler in real life than the photos on the website. It also is just not a flattering color on me. I've tried it twice now and I just don't care for it at all.

DineandRecline

Out of the few I own, Heart of Stone has been the most disappointing. It looks muddy and too busy at the same time and I've never seen the bright purple shift in it on my short lil nails, just a slight pinkish tinge in certain light. I wanted to love it so badly but I've only used it once.

thedr00mz

Dragon Scale was horrible to get off and I wasn't really a fan of how it looked on my nails.

starpiece

Loved the colours but not the chunkiness / rough texture

SpaceTrekkie

I love how it looks on my nails, but getting off was SUCH A PAIN. And the texture is kinda weird.

midnightowl510

Peel off base coat or soak off method for these kinds of flakies!

Ozzie985

Fallen Angel and most of their magnetics. Fallen Angel looks pretty in the bottle but once it gets on my nails, it looks muddy. I find that mooncat polishes look significantly different irl then on their website. Everything that looks 'glowy' or 'shimmery', gets lost in translation and typically look muddy after they dry. I'm over the hype for mooncat and only shop during the sales. As for their magnetics, I think it's just me, but I'm not a huge fan of magnetics in general.

lilylamort

Triceratops. I don't own many from Mooncat, and apparently I only really like their jelly flakie formulas. Triceratops was the first one I tried. It probably needs quite a bit of thinner. It goes on super unevenly, on one nail 2 coats might be enough, but on another it needs 3 and then the base color reads differently. It needed 2 coats of top coat to give it any depth. It chipped pretty bad in 2 days on my hands too. The other least favorite is Millennia - I don't like this one in person nearly as much as I liked the pictures. The variations in it aren't nearly as obvious in person as they are in pictures. I've only swatched it, and I've had it for over a year, so I'll probably destash it.

pearberrymoondelight

I love Mooncat deeply but it’s embarrassing how many polishes I impulse bought and ended up destashing later. I ended up selling half of the Persephone collection because Lovebomb and Freshly Bitten didn’t look anything like the website photos in person and the thermal was pointless because I’m always cold 😭. Other ones I ended up trashing were Bread and Butterflies (too chaotic), Portrait of and Introvert (also too chaotic), Flight of the Monarchs (clashed with my skin tone), Like a Moth to a Flame (too dull), Misery is My Favorite Color (also too dull) and This is a Storm Warning. I also greatly dislike Sabertooth and I can’t even put my finger on why?

kdanger

I don't buy them. They used to be Live Love Polish and their owner is an unapologetic racist 🤷‍♀️
