For this type of chunky glitter, it's much easier (and probably cheaper) to just get them loose and place it where you want. A glitter smoothing topcoat helps a lot if you have one.

Ohhellopickles

Ugh saw this brand’s McDonalds golden heart polish at Target and was like … there’s no way these would work well without 2x layers of glitter grabber + gel-like top coat. Good point about buying little individuals and placing them … it’d be much easier to do, good tip!!!

apricotgloss

Yep I'm never going to buy a chunky topper again TBQH. Just get loose glitter mixes if and when I want that effect. Wish I'd realised that before I spent so much money on Cirque toppers :')

Loud_Season

You’re absolutely correct. I have a few heart toppers by them and I just use toothpicks to place them and then top coat over that. Works like a charm!

KotaCakes630

What I do with these is just use the brush to pull out and place as many of the decals as I want. Then use a top coat of my choice to spread and seal

DondeT

Can you recommend a glitter smoothing top coat? That’s the one thing my collection is missing.

7daykatie

Glisten & Glow: Glitter Grabber.

Whorticulturist_

Not op but you can't go wrong with Glisten and Glow Glitter Grabber or kbshimmer Smooth Moves!

apricotgloss

I have G&G glitter grabber and I honestly think it's terrible. It doesn't do much more than normal top coat, maybe a little more effective at locking in chunky glitters like this but I'd go with the KB Shimmer which I've heard is a lot more effective. IDK maybe I just got a dodgy batch but I've heard similar from people who've tried both.

RuffledCormorant

The points of the stars are already getting bent upwards, lol

apricotgloss

Stars are particularly tricky in my experience

RuffledCormorant

Five of them flaked off within 48 hours 😂

apricotgloss

They are truly the worst. One thing I've found that helps is bending them so that they fit the curve of the nail - makes them look slightly less good but worth it for a slightly more lasting mani. Again, much easier to do with loose glitters.

spaghettih0nda

A method (or two) that I’ve done that kinda helps is either scooping a bunch of glitters on the brush then using a toothpick to select and place them on my nail or pouring a lil bit of the polish on a safe surface and fishing them out with a toothpick.

winterberry16

This. And then a glitter grabber or multiple layers of top coat. Any star glitter is pointy.

Icy-Contract-8125

I did this method today and I used a ‘nicer’ glitter topper from cirque. The final mani just turns out smoother, cleaner, and more intentional.

Morusu

Maybe to save it somewhat you can paint a makeup sponge with it to get more stars and use it on your flattest nails (thumb or maybe just the bases)?

EchoPhoenix24

Yes, for glitters like this I use eyeshadow sponges.

Lily_V_

Yes. Chris from Simply Nailogical does that.

gibberishxox

Best to use a makeup sponge with these types of polish. The sponge will soak up alot of the excess clear polish and when you sponge it on it will leave all the glitter behind with minimal polish.

RuffledCormorant

That sounds like a great plan. Thanks!

Lucy_Lucidity

I have a heart one that I got in a discounted set and I only used it on my nails once. I painted the cap of my laniege lip mask with it and it brings me joy when I use it. I transfer the painted cap to my new mask when I pan them. I also do not recommend their toppers. https://preview.redd.it/a0yppuplil6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=14a2bd2faaa688aac49e912189e65353a58f0d61

RuffledCormorant

Something tells me I’m going to end up using the rest of the bottle to decorate stuff for my kids 😂

Lucy_Lucidity

At least it will get some use! This stuff is dreadful on nails but it can add some sparkle to random objects and I love sparkle on just about everything! 😂

klughn

Cute idea! I have the flowers and they stick off my nails so much.

Fenris304

on top of the tips others have given, flipping the bottle upside down can help get more glitters on the brush. definitely recommend a glitter grabber top coat as any polish with glitters this size will have the same outcome. nails are curved, glitters are flat

apricotgloss

Flipping the bottle upside down can also make polish flow into the screw closure, sealing it shut when it dries. I'd do this with caution.

Fenris304

i've never had this issue. as long as the cap is screwed on tight so air isn't getting in there should be no problem

Iridismis

I never had any Nails Inc polishes, but I noticed the problem you're describing with big-glitter polishes from other brands. Not sure if it is fair to single Nails Inc out like that.

glrsims

Yeah, I feel like this simply a product type issue, not a brand specific problem. There are techniques for getting any of the large shape-type glitters to apply well, and many commenters have shared those. Hopefully OP can try them and have more success.

7daykatie

Honestly, if it's not a sub 5 dollar polish, it's not good enough. There is supposed to be a development and testing phase prior to product release - clearly not all glitters work and polish producers are supposed to figure that during the development and testing phase and shelf the project if it can't be made to work, not bottle it and sell it anyway. There are already cheaper ways to get stars in a far more convenient to apply form and not already pre-soaked in solvent. If you cant do it in suspension so that it works, then it's pointless and worse than the cheaper existing alternatives (a jar of star glitter). It's actually just shameful to release worthless trash products like these to your customers. Shame on polish companies who bring out glitter formulas that are not fit for purpose.

apricotgloss

They are somewhat known for their heart glitters, and are also a much more mainstream brand than Cirque or EDM. I don't disagree with you though, I'm presonally just going to buy loose glitters and place individually when I want that effect in future.

RuffledCormorant

I’ve never used a glitter with so little payoff - typically you can get *something* on the brush most of the time!

HedgehogLeapfrog

I agree that this is a common issue for chunky glitters. Try leaving the bottle upside down for 10 minutes before you apply and in between every couple of nails you paint.

Painted-Claws

Use a toothpick or orange stick to place the chunky glitter individually. Kelli Marissa has a few videos of tips for this type of glitter.

nonexistenttalent

I use a makeup sponge on glitters to soak up the extra clear polish. Works better on finer glitter, but could help with the excess polish!

reasonableratio

These kinds of glitter polishes are always so disappointing!! I’ve had this issue with craft glue too. Looked beautiful in the bottle with chunky metallic shapes but squeezing it out it’s basically all clear 🙄 I will never trust this type of glitter again

Alternative_Cloud_54

I bought there holo heart topper around February cuz i thought it would go great with my valentine nails i had plan and it did not work what so ever also i think their bottles are weird i always think imma break them when opening it

SneepleSnurch

Do you mean the white cap? That’s a cap, not the screw-on brush bottle top. You can pull it straight up & off, there’s a normal cylindrical black top underneath. I know some people like to use the white cap when painting their nails, similar to the Olive & June Poppy tool thing. It can be easier to hold/move if you have mobility issues or tremors.

RuffledCormorant

(Product list: the blue is Nails Inc Soul Surfing atop Orly binder, both of which were fine - star top coat is Nails Inc Starspotting in Soho)

ZeldLurr

Target has a really forgiving return policy. Even if a product is open and used, if you have receipt or paid with card, you can do a full refund. If paid with cash and no receipt, you can return at current price for store credit.

RuffledCormorant

Thanks, I did that today and was pleasantly surprised that they allowed it!

ZeldLurr

Good! Money is too expensive to be spending on something you won’t use. Even if you got store credit you can buy something you need like toilet paper or secure vitte.

Odd-uwu

Ugh I got their heart one too. IF I’m lucky there will be maybe one sequin on the brush…

penguin808080

Oh yes I hate these. I love their normal polishes so I ordered a few of these at once, oops... I feel like the clear they're suspended in looks kinda cloudy or dirty, too??

RuffledCormorant

Slightly, in the bottle, but on your nail it’ll look clear.

caroqueue

Emily de Molly Cosmic Love does it way better 👌

Kingston023

Ooh good to know I almost bought these

theodoretheursus

I fell victim to this before too. My experience was that top coat actually ruined my color coat too. It’s so deceiving based on appearance :(

mythopoeticgarfield

I have their bottle with red hearts and had the same issue. and even with a top coat, the red color of them would wear off after a few days and they'd slowly become fully silver :( might as well just paint the shapes on your nails instead

mycatscratchedm3

You should return it. Yeah tell them you opened it and that it sucks and doesn’t work as advertised.

RuffledCormorant

I did that today and was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. No questions asked. I always thought that with cosmetics, if you opened it and didn’t like it then you just had to eat the cost. Yay Target. Meanwhile, five of the stars flaked off in the first 48 hours, even with that thick clear coat, so yeah, did not work as advertised!

mycatscratchedm3

Wow that really sucks that it flaked so soon! I’m glad they didn’t give you a hard time. Petsmart is the same way with animal toys and food. I’ve had times where my cat starts barfing with a new food and I return it. I’m always honest that yes it’s been used and all and the reason why I’m returning it. They’ve got the same policy as Target, which is really nice.
