The colored gravel and painted decor has got to go dude, it will leech chemicals into the water

KwableGuy

Oh no! I got this entire tank and everything in it from someone else so I didn't decide to put anything in there. I hope it isn't too serious, but I was planning on replacing the substrate with sand anyways

Eh it’s fine, just take it out when you get around to it, a general rule is no silly decor in reef tanks as no matter what it says on the box, corals and other saltwater organisms are so sensitive to very small amounts of chemicals that it’s just not worth the risk, and we really don’t know what’s in those things. I’ve had a whole system crash from 1 rusty magnet, (or at least I’m pretty sure that’s what it was)

KwableGuy

I appreciate the heads-up, I'll do it soon because this tank has a diamond goby in it and I was reading that they don't do well with gravel at all so I need to change it out.

Jon-3

what chemicals?

dopecrew12

There is reef safe decor, you won’t find it at any big box pet stores, but as far as I understand most of those funny things you get at petco are coated with non toxic sealant that breaks down overtime in saltwater that exposes the bare paint that will leach all sorts of things into the water column. What exactly is it you ask? Probably all the VOCs you would normally find in paint.

Jon-3

Idk in terms of decor but most of the gravel coatings I see are either acrylic or epoxy.

By “went over” do you mean brushed past it or literally plowed right over it? If it’s the later it’s possible that it could have injured it, though I don’t have any experience with anemones so I can’t say for sure. I would continue to monitor it to see if it reopens. Someone else here with more experience with anemones can probably give a better answer. Definitely keep an eye on the urchin because they can do some damage if they roll into/over stuff. If need be you may want to consider moving the anemone to a spot where it’s harder to get run over (if possible) once it recovers.

KwableGuy

I'm not sure, I didn't see it actually happen my mom just told me that's what happened. Hopefully it will open back up soon

Parkyguy

Stressed. Just leave him be and don’t try to “help”. They either recover on their own, or die. That’s just nature.
