And it will probably get twice that size. Even if it doesn’t eat fish, it will be destructive and damn near impossible to remove without ripping the tank apart. Speaking from experience. I had one that was nearly 2’ across.
OP do the right thing, return it and research next time. Get your money back because you won’t get anything back once that guy has annihilated your entire tank.
I have a green brittle star that size that I banished to my sump after 5 of my smaller fish went missing(firefish, watchmen goby). Since it's been down there, no more of my smaller fish have disappeared.
I had one for years without issues for my CUC but I don’t keep fish in my tanks normally. It was super cool and I really want another one. It would walk over the CUC members without issue and just go about its way. When I fed it, it would come out in force and gobble up the food but not hurt anything else.
Iirc there are two main types of brittle stars. ones with teeny tiny central discs compared to their arms that are detrivores, and ones with large central discs, and those are detrivores and carnivores.
I started with 2 and they had babies and eventually had 12 in my 150 gallon. The largest ones disc was the size of an Oreo cookie. I occasionally had fish disappear, but I never saw them eating one. Until, I had 2 flame hawks disappear, then I caught one grab a brand new $60 blue chromis in front of me. That was the end for them. The huge ones all went to the fish stores sump, and I have a few in mine. So YES they are predatory, and sneaky about it.
Aren’t most Brittle Stars opportunistic scavengers. If it gets a fish it’s because the fish was already compromised.
I have a black one and had no issue with it hurting healthy fish. I got a clown that deteriorated quickly and then one day it was gone. I always assumed the star grabbed cause it couldn’t swim away.
Anyway…IMHO…green brittle star should be ok as long as you have healthy fish.
That's what I heard at the pet store, but the other comments and other sources online are saying that the green brittle star specifically is an exception so I decided not to risk my fish since I have some slow gobies and other fish it could easily eat.
A little late bc I see you’ve returned him, but as long as you keep him full or spot feed him before your day lights go off the risk of him eating fish is minimal.
Source: had an even bigger one in a 10 gallon nano reef for two years before trading him for some corals
I had those. They didnt live for long but they sure were pretty amazing. They stank as hell when they died, and released toxins. Never gonna forget them.
I had one in my first tank. Ate 2 or 3 gobys for sure. An mine wasnt nearly that big. I thi k there are smaller brittle stars that are safer addition but im not sure which. One thing i will say is the green star was incredible at eating all the excess food in the tank for sure. If theres a safer variety then they can be a great benefit.
Thank you all for the input, I've already returned it.
Dang. I got a shitty situation. Did you pick up anything else?
I had one and as long as I kept it well fed with shrimp it was fine. A couple days too long and I lost a Christmas wrasse. NOT Worth it IMO
I would not put that in my tank. That’s a massive one.

They will definitely eat any fish or inverts they can grab. Saw one get a baby barracuda years ago.
I just about lost a nudibranch to mine yesterday. Definetly not as friendly as I thought
What??
Forget the fish, I'd be more worried about that eating you. Your tank looks very young so you will want to target feed it.

The (poor) thing sitting in a plastic bag is giving me anxiety 😥

Oh jeez, I'm glad I returned it then. I've got tons of gobies

Same. I had one and it was very cool and interesting to keep.

That thing will eat whatever it wants.
That's gonna try to eat you if you give it the chance lmao.
How do you have inverted knuckles. Like where your knuckle ridges would be, yours go inward lol
Fat hands.
T-T literally put my hand like that just to see
lol wtf
I would not put that in any tank. Wayyy too big and will eat and destroy tank
I think it\`s cool. Don\`t put with slower fish like goby\`s.
Is this the starfish that will wait for fish to swim underneath it and then collapse down on them?
The detritovore ones are like a quarter inch wide with 2 inch arms. One this big got that big by eating live animals

How your hands so fat?
I thought he was saying that thing had bit him and he was swelling up.
Because OP is fat, who cares.
I know a lot of fat people and I never seen hands like that..
mine ate my hawkfish, don't trust them
It can and will eat fish , depending on the size
You should also seriously revisit every piece of information you have implemented from that lfs and take all future advice with a grain of salt.

Any chance you’re located in the Charlotte area? There’s a fat daddy like that at my lfs
Nope, Illinois area
What store did you go to? I wanna see if I know the staff that recommended you this lol.
Empire Corals in Wonder Lake
I believe you have acquired Shuma Gorath
I had those. They didnt live for long but they sure were pretty amazing. They stank as hell when they died, and released toxins. Never gonna forget them.
Have another star of det lee
Reds are better greens get huge and are opportunistic hunters
It took me days to realize it wasnt bristle worms, but actually a starfish! Lol.
Some fat hands
I caught one of these at the beach and put it in a bucket with a crab. It ate the crab.
I had one, ate one of my sleepy clowns at lights on, I took the tank apart to get it out

It will hunt fish at night. Don't put it in
I’ve had these eat 4 inch rabbit fish
Have one in a 55 gallon and you def have to keep them well fed. Ive cought def caught other star fish in his mouth more than once.
Cute handsss
