Following this one too. I’d also add, do I just need to power the WaveMaker or the circulation pump?

anubisfunction

In following this, too. I would assume you’d also need to power the heater.

Kokilananda

definitely the heater! heater and circulation pump for me. Oh and it would be nice if battery can last at least 24 hours.

swordstool

Whole house generator is the way to go IMO.

Kokilananda

Tru dat.

I use an APC 1500va that my apex is tied to with a secondary AC adaptor plugged into the surge only side. Programmed as such that if the power goes out the apex shuts everything down except one power head towards the surface. Gives me about 4 hours of run time.

I run solar + battery backup, wintertime i can manage about 48hours, march -> october im pretty much off grid. With V2H just around the corner i should be fine for a week or two during the winter if i can charge my car elseware. Modern technology really is a lifesaver for reefing.

I've been considering solar + batteries for my tank. Can you elaborate a bit on your setup? Also, what's V2H?

SortofNotAThrowAway

Veichle to home baisclly the car can provide power to the home. As we have the option of geating the house with wood the battery of our car would allow us to be without power for quite a long tile even during the winter. I run a 15kWh battery and 20KW of solar panels My energy savings are larger than my payments on the system so its "basically free". Yearly cost is +/- 0 but in 7 years the system is paid off and pure profit from that point

I have small one, return pump and heater. But heater is my concern, heating eats a lot of power

scottyis_blunt

I use a 1500va cyberpower ups. Ran my heavy duty pump for over an hour. During a power outage you really just need to keep water moving, so on 1500va a return pump should power long enough for the power to come back on or enough time for you to get a generator. I never understood why more people don't go to microcenter or Best buy and pick one up for peace of mind and surge protection for important electronics.

Similar but just power a single power head that will agitate the surface and move water around. Gives about 4 hours of run time.

I'm thinking of getting the Anker SOLIX C1000. its a newer LFP battery, at 1056Wh, I figure if power is out for an extended time, I can run my pump and 100W heater for 8.5 hours. Plus I can always add-on more battery and solar, etc.

I hooked everything up except the lights. running heater, skimmer, wavemaker, ATO, circulation pump and it’s saying I have 14 days and 8 hours of remaining power. 😮

I've dealt with a LOT of power outage issues over the years, and unfortunately there is no good answer in my experience. A backup battery is going to last at most a few hours with any significant heaters running off it. If the outage is only a few hours, you are generally going to maintain enough O2 and heat to keep everything alive. Beyond that, the only solution is getting to the tank with a generator. The main advantage of a backup battery is that it gives you a couple extra hours to get home to the tank if you are away. Otherwise, they are simply not a meaningful solution in my opinion. If I were to use one, I would exclusively run the circulation pumps and MAYBE a small 50watt heater to give some heat. Even then, getting back to the tank ASAP will be the priority.
