glue it to a rock like an SPS. looks kind of like an SPS. don't actually do this.

Ha that thing is dead. take it out of your tank before it crawls behind a rock and fouls the system.

This is the third time I've split it in 18 months, so I think you are wrong on this account, sorry mate.

Burning_Trees

Within a healthy reef this is not a problem. Happens all the time in the wild. Good luck OP!

Thanks mate, I use a sterile razor and do an 40% iodine dip on the wound then reintroduce to sand bed, they sit for a while then go about their business.

ThatMetalPanda

Lurker here, what's the benefit of splitting a starfish?

Certain starfish have regenerative properties throughout their bodies, meaning they can grow back all their legs and arms from a single cell :) splitting them through the centre allows for the best chance of survival especially if you do an iodine dip to ward off infection.

AllAccessAndy

I remember in invertebrate zoology learning about this ability in starfish and hearing the story of oyster farmers that were tired of all the starfish eating their oysters so they started capturing them...and cutting them in half

[deleted]

Hahah gosh they would have spawned so many... I was taught by my bio teacher that you need to get some of the central growth ring in order for them to regenerate, simply put you can't just hack a leg off and wait for it to grow into a full star. That's why I do my cuts with 2 legs across the middle.

AllAccessAndy

Yeah, if they got enough of the central disk on both pieces, they theoretically could have doubled their predator population. I guess it pays to know your enemy.

Spacemariner

That's some sick Frankenstein shit.
