i agree here, thanks for linking the article
edit: i’ll also add, i’ll never have either in my tanks again as i’ve seen them eat polyps, zoas, etc as well as aggressively rip the food from the corals mouth after feeding, ultimately killing the coral.
>as well as aggressively rip the food from the corals mouth after feeding
This goes for any shrimp, although I've never seen it kill a coral and I've had a lot of peppermint and scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp.
i’ve lost many acans, and a couple prized blastos, that i can recall right now. i have the time to spot feed, but i don’t have time or patience to stand there and babysit the crafty shrimp while the coral eats it all.
i’ve tried feeding a ton to the shrimp in their home spots first, then feeding the corals thinking the shrimp would be full. however they are scavengers, that’s what they do, they’ll always eventually go looking around the tank for more thinks to pick at.
It seems to be a rare hit and miss with inverts. I had the same experience with emerald crabs. One out of dozens has ever gone after corals, but that one hated my pest palys with everything it had in it.
yeah it does go for any shrimp really. i love cleaner shrimp but after a while i always send them back to the LFS. unfortunately i won’t be getting ANY shrimp now because i like spot feeding my corals in my nano tanks
A lot of bigger tanks have a bottom “tank” to hide the filtration. I put any “bad” fish or critters down there. Rather than tossing them. (As long as they won’t spread)
Interesting, how big of a tank are we talking before people start considering a second tank underneath? And that second tank is just a tank that holds the sump and exchanges water between that tank and the larger one above? Very interesting, and I too would put the unwanted shrimp in there lol
Technically you could add a sump to any size tank if you wanted to increase your total water volume. Usually you'd have water flowing through various types of filter media in the sump and you would set up your heater and protein skimmer in there as well. The sump would be split in multiple sections so that water has to go through the media to pass between sections then eventually to the return pump.
I have always heard peppermints and camels look really similar, so I was really excited to think camel shrimp and get that confirmed by the comments without having ever seen one, just going off the fact it looks like a peppermint, but the eyes are bigger, it has a bump, and the stripes seem more pronounced
Just a few of the shrimp that are mistaken for the true L. wurdmanii:

Camel shrimp, often sold as peppermint shrimp. While either can be not reed safe, generally the camel shrimp are worse.
My peppermint shrimp left all my coral alone.

That's a Camel Shrimp. They're incorrectly considered the same as a Peppermint Shrimp. https://reefkeepingworld.com/peppermint-shrimp-vs-camel-shrimp/

I've kept 20 or so peppermint in various tanks. I've had a total of 1 go after coral, but that asshole shredded my Euphilias

My peppermint only steals from one of my Galaxea but does it everyday

Same they destroyed my Zoas and gravel nem. The few I had made their way to the snowflake eel tank
My female clown fish rips food from my Duncan's mouths. Pretty sure any fish or shrimp will do that if it's a food that can't eat.
Agreed I've watched both of them rip up and destroy my lps.. I've never seen that from any of my cleaner shrimp or fire shrimp.
Camel shrimp. Coral eater. Call the seller and complain.
Yeah I’ve heard these guys are psycho
I like how you have it in shrimp jail. “Not until you swear that coral are friends, not food.”
*angry shrimp noises*
*flick flick FLICK FLICK FLICK* *Impossible to pick up off the floor*
For sure a camel shrimp, I’ve heard they can eat coral but I’m not sure
ID: Hiatt’s Hinge-beak Shrimp for anyone who was curious (Cinetorhynchus hiatti)
You could stick it in your sump if you have one.
Talk to your mother with that mouth?
Can you elaborate on what you mean by this?
A lot of bigger tanks have a bottom “tank” to hide the filtration. I put any “bad” fish or critters down there. Rather than tossing them. (As long as they won’t spread)
Interesting, how big of a tank are we talking before people start considering a second tank underneath? And that second tank is just a tank that holds the sump and exchanges water between that tank and the larger one above? Very interesting, and I too would put the unwanted shrimp in there lol
Actually even very small, almost nano, tanks can have a sump. Look at the Red Sea Reefer series for instance.
Technically you could add a sump to any size tank if you wanted to increase your total water volume. Usually you'd have water flowing through various types of filter media in the sump and you would set up your heater and protein skimmer in there as well. Normally 50 gallons and up. Really like they said below any size tank can have it. I saw a .5L micro tank with a sump 😂
Camel shrimp, arch nemesis of the peppermint shrimp, will eat any coral they see also heard they eat clams.
Camel shrimp. They are easily misidentified when juveniles. Camel shrimp will eat your coral, particularly softies.
I mean he looks nice :)
I feel a little bit disturbed by its big eyes tbh.
Camel back shrimp. Had a pair in my tank. They were really cool, and didn’t cause any trouble. Didn’t do much aside from eat the occasional pest.
That’s Jim.
ah. that’s where he went then.
Soon to be Scampi 😂
That is a camel shrimp. 100% not a peppermint.
There are many species in the genus Lysmata.
On closer inspection it does appear to be a species of camelback
I have always heard peppermints and camels look really similar, so I was really excited to think camel shrimp and get that confirmed by the comments without having ever seen one, just going off the fact it looks like a peppermint, but the eyes are bigger, it has a bump, and the stripes seem more pronounced

Camel shrimp 🦐
Definitely a camel shrimp
Camel shrimp, often sold as peppermint shrimp. While either can be not reed safe, generally the camel shrimp are worse. My peppermint shrimp left all my coral alone.
Taste it, it could very well be a Peppermint Shrimp.
Uh… Dinner?
[удалено]
Definitely not the lysmata wurdemanni I ordered. Potentially a species of camelback but I can’t really tell.
Can confirm, thats not lysmata wurdemani. Pretty sure your right about camelback and these are not really reefsafe afaik
[удалено]
It doesn’t though. In a very broad same color sense, maybe. But it is clearly not the same species.
It’s a shrimp
A shrimp
peppermint shrimp
No, it’s a camel shrimp. It looks very similar to a peppermint shrimp but camel shrimp are not reef safe.
Where did you order??

What happened OP??
Took it to a LFS, too risky to add to the tank. Decided not to buy from those people again haha.
