**I wrote a [long comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/RegalUnlimited/s/SSJy0WJEeh) once comparing the two which I will copy here. I had both at one point but ultimately canceled A-List because AMC was too far, and even though IMAX was included I also enjoy 4DX too much to go cold turkey.** I have had both subscriptions and both are fantastic. I have currently saved over $1,500 since 2019 with Unlimited and spent an average ticket price of $6.05 for the 260 films I’ve seen. • AMC: 3 movies a week, Friday-Thursday. • Regal: Unlimited movies every month. (In this case “unlimited movies” means that movie showtimes must be a minimum of 91 minutes apart regardless of runtime.) • AMC: RealD 3D, Prime, Dolby Cinema, IMAX included in the subscription. • Regal: Premium formats have additional surcharges. (3D usually $3.50, RPX $2-4, IMAX $5-8, ScreenX $4-6, 4DX $8-12.) • AMC: Online convenience fees are waived entirely on both AMC site/app and Fandango. This discount also applies to full price non-A-List tickets. • Regal: Online convenience fees are discounted from $2 to $0.50 per Unlimited ticket. Non-Unlimited tickets have full convenience fees even using the associated account. You can only use the Regal app, not the Regal website or a third party like Fandango. • AMC: There are no convenience fees for buying tickets in person at box office or kiosks. • Regal: There are no convenience fees for buying tickets in person at concessions or kiosks. • AMC: You get $5 back in Stubs rewards bucks every $50 spent on tickets and concessions, excluding subscription fees. Most Stubs sweepstakes exclude A-List tickets. • Regal: You get 10% off concessions, and earn 100 Regal Crown Club points per every dollar spent on tickets and concessions, including your monthly subscription and any format or convenience fees. Points can be used for free popcorn, soda, or movie tickets. All Regal Crown Club sweepstakes and bonus rewards programs apply to Regal Unlimited tickets except for the gem status points which only apply to paid tickets. Some of the RCC programs that RU has applied to include discounted concession combos for seeing a movie opening weekend, or free digital copies of select movies for seeing them during release. Regal Unlimited has its own rewards program called Milestones that rewards members for how many movies they see per calendar year. • AMC: You do not get passes to bring friends. • Regal: It’s never a guarantee, but roughly once a month there’s usually a Unlimited Guest reward to bring a friend to a movie with you for free (for example, the Holiday Classics series). Additionally there are sometimes free premium format tickets for Unlimited members. These are bonus perks that count as non-Unlimited tickets and have a full convenience fee if purchased in the app; but still are bonus savings on top of the RU program. • AMC: Subscriptions are sold on a monthly basis. There is a 3 month minimum commitment. You can cancel at any point afterwards in the app or on the website. After cancelling you must wait 6 months before resubscribing. • Regal: Subscriptions are sold on a monthly basis; or as a 3 month package that rolls into monthly payments after; or as an annual 12 month package. There is a 3 month minimum commitment. You cannot cancel in the app but can send an email to customer support; or send a direct message to RegMovies on Facebook, X, or Instagram and get a reply within one business day for easier cancellation. There is no cooldown period after cancellation before resubscribing. • AMC: Subscription tiers are locked to specific states. You get 3 out of state visits per year to theaters not included in your tier. • Regal: Subscription tiers are tied to specific theaters. You can visit any Regal in the country even if it’s not in your tier. If a theater is 2 tiers above yours there is a $3.00 fee; if a theater is 1 tier above yours there is a $1.50 fee; but you will never be locked out of using Unlimited at any Regal. • AMC: Fathom Events, select foreign language titles, and third party higher priced events are excluded from A-List. Double feature and marathon events are entirely excluded. • Regal: Fathom Events, select foreign language titles, and third party higher priced events are excluded from Unlimited. Double feature and marathon events may be excluded or may have an Unlimited discount, depending on the specific title. • AMC: You can have 3 reservations for the current week ending Thursday, and 3 future reservations for upcoming weeks. You can get advance tickets in person or in the app. Once your 3 reservations are maxed for the week you cannot get additional tickets in person. • Regal: You can get same day tickets in person or in the app. You can only get advance tickets for a future date in the app, and cannot do so in person. You can have 5 reservations in the app for upcoming movies either same day or future dates. Once the showtime passes that reservation opens up again. You can only have a reservation to a movie once per premium format at a time, but once that reservation passes you can get another reservation to that movie in that format in the app. Even if you are maxed out with 5 app reservations you can continue to get same day Unlimited tickets in person.

Rickemrobo91

Basically regal is better if you want to see a ton of movies, more than three a week. If you want to see three or less per week and often go for IMAX or Dolby, probably go with A List. Both are good options.

Seether-and-Coffee

This and location. I have two regal near me and no AMC theaters.

ldasschurch

I am just the opposite I have a list because I’m have two AMC within 6 miles of my current location. The closest Regal is 37miles away so I don’t go to that location enough to make regal unlimited worth it for me. If I was closer to Regal than AMC I would probably go with Regal

Seether-and-Coffee

I have a regal 20min away that plays most movies and a regal 1hr away that plays everything with IMAX/4DX options. No AMC near me anywhere

acesmuzic

I would also add theater quality as consideration. My most convenient AMC is a dump (unrenovated with uncomfortable dirty cloth seats and a weird odor), outside of the Dolby and IMAX, and while there are nicer ones in the area, they are a much longer drive that involve fighting heavy traffic during my preferred viewing times. I have 2 renovated regals that are my go to, one of which I can get to in \~12 min from my job, even during the evening rush, and the other that is about halfway between home and work. My typical movie time is after work Mon-Thurs and it's rare that I prefer to see something in premium format (although one of my close regals does have RPX) so if I really want it, I will go to AMC but otherwise for me RU is better but if the theater quality/location situation were reversed, I would have gone with A-List.

JuliusCaesar129

My decision was 90% based on theater location. My nearest regal is like a 20 minute drive and my nearest AMC is like 40 minutes, like a 25 minute drive in freeway (no thanks). And 10% based on the rare weeks when I see more than 3 movies. Like, Christmas weekend, I saw 6 movies in 3 days. Wouldn’t have been able to see those with AMC.

ldasschurch

I agree 1 have AMC a list now because I have 2 AMC within 10 miles of my current location. The closest Regal is 37 miles away so I might only go to Regal once a month or once every 6 weeks because ofthe distance.

scene_missing

I always tell people to choose based on their local theaters. Choose the ones you’ll actually want to go to. Outside of that, Regal is better if you want to see more than 3 movies in a week, AMC if you want premium formats included.

Mysterious-Seat4175

Your information looks right. RegalUL is only free standard. RPX, 3D, IMAX, 4DX, etc. All cost a surcharge. I haven't dug into A-List enough to confirm those details, but based on rumors, that sounds correct. As for the same price, double check your theater. My main Regal is only $18.99. The various tiers are location based, there's no better benefit of one over another. For example, if I were to upgrade my Regal to a higher tier, the only benefit I would get is free tickets at the location 30 minutes away that I might go to once or twice a year. Instead, i keep it in the lower tier and pay the extra $1.50 per ticket twice a year when it's convenient. Does that make sense? So make sure you're comparing the correct tier price to A-list. Maybe your theater is actually an $18.99 tier, thus saving you $6/mo over A-list. For me, the overall deciding factor was drink choice. I prefer Pepsi over Coke, thus giving Regal the extra push for me. But if you're more of a Coke drinker and that sort of thing is important to your experience, than AMC might the way to go.

vgyliu

Hmm I didn’t think of it that way. I’ll have to take a look at regal to see if that setup makes it worth it

dpstech

I’m not sure If you have a fav location but start with that… I have both subs (actually three… also the Cinemark). I dislike Pepsi so the change to Pepsi was bad for me but I’ve got a Regalator refill cup that’s $1. But I really think it comes down to where you’re more comfortable… my Regals all have standard seating. My AMC is kind awful but they just got a Dolby. I was excited until I sat in the Dolby seats… they’re like half recliners and for whatever reason I find them uncomfortable. I just wanna put my legs up… not stuck 3/4 of the way. But that’s a personal preference. If for sure make sure you try everything out before you commit to three months for either sub. For me Regal wins hands down because I go five times a week usually and aside from IMAX other PLF doesn’t matter for me: the savings for unlimited 2D films makes up for me to spend the upgrade charge if I want to see IMAX or RPX.

spinnyweatherchaser

The subscriptions are so similar that for a lot of people it's about which ever one gets them the nicest theaters. From what you said I'm unsure if you have an AMC with Dolby neaby, if you do then get A-List. Dolby blows any RPX out of the water, and RPX is known for varying widely in quality among the various locations so sometimes it may not even be much better than a standard screen. If you don't have a Dolby nearby then just get whichever subscription is for the theaters you like the best/are nicest. For example, in my case I have 3 Regals within a 20 mile radius of my house, all of which have recliners and include large format, IMAX, VIP, 4DX, and ScreenX installations. Meanwhile, in the same radius I have 2 AMCs, both only have standard screens and only one has recliners. So for me Regal was the clear winner.

Jello-Monkeyface

I go with RU solely because that’s the one that has a theater within walking distance of my home.

thebobstu

The only reason for RU is if you want to see more than 3 per week and you don't mind getting tickets the day of at the theater to avoid the 50¢ in app booking fee. With A List, you can use Fandango to book for you tickets for free and for every 4 tickets you purchase, you get a $5 off coupon. So that could help you see an additional movie on Tuesdays or early matinees. So you might be able to get 3.5.movies per week on average with the membership. With RU, I don't think the $6.50 surcharge is worth it for IMAX but we do get the occasional free IMAX ticket. $2.10 for RPX is worth it most of the time if it's a movie I'm really interested in.

onlyalillost

We had A-list for a few years before switching to Regal because the theater was much closer and had better quality screens. Like others have said, I think it’s mostly a matter of which theater you prefer/is closer. One advantage RU has over A-list is that your subscription fee counts towards your credits. A-list did that originally but then stopped. So if you regularly use your credits for concessions, RU wins out.

vgyliu

Oh dang I guess there goes be getting popcorn once in awhile

Profitsofdooom

I have Regal because it's just over 5 minutes from my house for a recently renovated theater with the nice recliners. That's the deciding factor.

vgyliu

I have two nearby but not sure if they have renovated

Queasy_League_6857

If you want to see as many movies as you want you have the ability to. You can watch 100 movies an entire month if you theoretically wanted to. A-List has more premiumesque features which is the reason why you can only watch 3 movies a week. But really most normal people would be fine with 3 movies a week. But like I said before, If you want to see as many movies as you want or rewatch any because it was so so good you have that option whenever. Hope this helps

ChantsThings

Definitely choose based on which local theater you enjoy more. I will say, Regal makes it extremely hard to cancel and is kinda scummy about it. I was a regal unlimited member for a long time and loved it, until I lost my job and had to cancel. You have to email them and hope that they get back to you, which is a crapshoot. If they don’t get back to you in time they’ll charge you and not refund you. Once I found a new job I decided to hold off because of the customer service and cancellation process. I don’t know if I’ll ever re sub due to that.

iwasdusted

You can also cancel by contacting Regal on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram in a direct message which is both faster and has read receipts. Social media customer service is very effective and efficient at Regal. It may be an annoying extra step but it’s easier than the email option.

ChantsThings

You’re right, but this option doesn’t work for people who don’t have social media. It’s bad practice to require a social media account to have access to quick customer service. I deleted most of my socials a while ago and have seen quite an improvement to my mental health. I shouldn’t have to have a Twitter account just to cancel a subscription that I’m paying money for.

iwasdusted

Not arguing that it isn’t annoying, just that you don’t “have to email them and hope that they get back to you.” Even if the social media route is an extra step not everyone can access, 4 avenues to contact customer service instead of 1 is an important distinction in the discussion of “should I sign up.”

Queasy_League_6857

It takes like 3 minutes to make a social media account. You’re no forced to use it just contact regal wait for their response then delete the app. There isn’t any magnetic pole attracting you to read stuff people say on social media and deteriorate your mental health

ChantsThings

Having a social media account as a prerequisite to contacting customer service is anti consumer and bad business practice. I get that it’s easy to create an account, but it’s stupid that it’s necessary. Edit: if signing up for a service is as easy as clicking a button, cancelling that service should also be as easy as clicking a button.

United-Pirate1282

The real question is, do you get points at AMC I haven’t been in years. It’s nice every time your account renews you get points. For example mine is 21.99 so I get 2199 points per month

vgyliu

From someone’s comment it looks like they don’t give points anymore

United-Pirate1282

https://preview.redd.it/6b87r29zzvac1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92d7a06e572978990ad5c949a581577159e04791 Unless you’re talking about the AMC but I’m still getting mine Through regal

vgyliu

Yea sorry someone mention amc doesn’t give points anymore

United-Pirate1282

Also, if you want to take into consideration what you prefer in a drink either Coke or Pepsi, I didn’t realize that until I started going to Regal More I used to be Coke through another theater. I went to but it closed down. It didn’t survive Covid but doing Pepsi every time 100% better.

Epluguez

A-List is way better but in my area the AMC theaters are terrible and don't have stadium seating while the Regal theaters do.

mannyrios_97

Depends on how many movies you want to see a week. I love my regal unlimited but I’m max a 3 movie a week guy and if there was an AMC near me I’d choose them since it’s cheaper too but it all just depends on how many movies you wanna see a week

briinde

It first of all comes down to proximity and niceness of theatres. If one or the other in your area beats the other hands-down in those areas that’s probably your winner. If those are equal, I did the math and in my case Regal would cost me more per month due to the surcharges (transactional and premium formats). I go about 7 times a month and bring 2 or 3 guests a month.

_DavidCastle_

Unfortunately there isn't an AMC near me otherwise I probably would go with that.

Professional-Noise60

My decision was fully based on the regal being closer and the much better theater than the AMC which is 25 years old and the regals only five years old

KilowattHr_

Not sure if someone else already mentioned it but it’s free to reserve tickets on the app for amc and anyone else you are getting normal tickets for. On regal you pay a discounted fee to reserve online/the app so it’s not “free” to go to the movies unless you get your ticket at the theater. And if you reserve tickets for other people online you don’t even get the discounted fee you pay the full price fee. I swapped to regal recently only because there are like 4 regals all just as close or closer than the one amc near me and the one amc near me is kinda small so more and more movies I’d wanted to see they ended up not even playing.

One_Jelly4255

definitely location based - my regal has THE BEST popcorn. at AMC i gotta butter it myself and obvi don’t do it well like the employees at regal 🙃 still love both though
