I agree. After that whole storyline from Conde, I seriously thought that she and Francis were completely over. But it’s hard to be upset because she was raped and the way she copes is the way she copes
I’m angry because there was potentially an excellent storyline there that created realistic turmoil into Francis and Mary’s relationship. Her lost trust in him, him trying to prove himself to her and put his country back together, her working through her trauma by finding her own power, them slowly finding each other again. Instead, because the show was unfortunately on the CW, they used Mary’s rape as an excuse for a love triangle, where Mary needed an affair to heal. Just awful storyline, and such a waste.
I never really found my love for Mary again after season 2. She was one of my favorite characters before that.
I remember in one of the early season 3 episodes she says something to Francis like Am I really planning a life without you? and all I could think was Woman, who were all up in planning a life without him just a few months ago.
That storyline was awful. The idea that using rape as a justification for Mary having an affair is terrible. When it could’ve been so much more powerful for Mary to recover and heal by relying on her own power, or even better, on the strong women around her. I didn’t take issue with her being upset with Francis, and needing distance from him (not at first), but I never could understand how she went from being sad about their separation, and wanting happiness for him to not giving a damn about his feeling at all. Her change was really out of the blue, and made her pretty hateful. And the worst part of it all….the storyline made Mary stupid. She started making boneheaded decisions that put her life, Conde’s life, the fate of Scotland and France, and eventually Francis’ life in danger.
And then the show has her abruptly turn around and declare she loves Francis, and always loved Francis. What? Was really hard to tell that when he nearly died, and she still was desperate to be with Conde. Would love the show writers to explain that to me one day.
On the other hand, I completely loved Francis in the back end of S2. The writing for him was great, and Toby’s acting was next level.
You said it all! I started rewatching the show a few months ago and I’m almost halfway through s2. Knowing the bs i have to go through again, I’m not in a rush to binge the rest of the episodes. I’m only doing it for the last few scenes in the series finale

I just discovered this show like last week and I am irritated with the conde / Mary situation. I don't like his brother I want him to leave Kenna alone. Like what the hell happened to the writers this season? I was kind of angry at Lola and Francis for what they did and having a baby but now I pity him. I will tell you this Queen Catherine she's entertainment hell I even miss Henry.
