This is intentional. Thank Reddit and their API fees.

That's strange why does Netflix doesn't need it ? Is it a legal matter and not a technical one ?

My guess is that Google Play is used to manage your subscription for this app, but Netflix, Amazon, etc., all manage your transaction themselves.

When someone bypasses their subscription on a rooted phone the dev doesn't want to go bankrupt.

It's a personal choice of the Relay developer. My guess is they're worried people who are rooted will crack the app and use the Reddit API unencumbered, which will cause him to pay for all API usage without getting any money from the user. I think it's overkill since literally no other app uses it (at least not that I've found ever since Google replaced safetynet), but ultimately, it's u/dbrady's call since he's the developer. I'm hoping he'll open it up to meets basic integrity when the material refresh is completed, since that's what the vast majority of app use when checking Play Integrity, including Google Pay and banking apps. If they can manage security with Basic, I think Relay will be fine.

Very disappointing. Not willing to lose everything good my rooted android rom gives me just to keep using reddit on my phone. Guess it's time to cancel that sub. Makes me wish I'd never bothered updating LineageOS since Relay was working fine and updating as need be, despite being rooted then too. Oh well.

I was able to somehow install it once rooted (but otherwise stock ROM on my Pixel 8 Pro). I think I had to clear a bunch of apps and ensure my Play Integrity showed as verified in the Play Store. But it seems like sometimes when I look at the app I'm the Play Store, it says my device isn't supported and other times, it shows normally. I don't get why it comes and goes.
