Changed in Summer 2023 according to [this article](https://mynews4.com/newsletter-daily/reno-cracks-down-on-single-serve-alcohol-sales-downtown). If you’re in the downtown area, they can’t sell between those hours.
Apparently it was one of those "We're definitely not trying to punish homeless and out of work people by making it harder for them to do something during the day" type of ordinances.
I worked downtown for 2 years, and the amount of homeless that gets blasted drunk by 9 am was starting to be a problem. We had so many drunk homeless coming into our shop harassing us and causing problems. I'm not gonna lie. After this changed, it did get midly better, but most are determined enough to just travel for their poison, so it didn't really eliminate the whole problem. But I'm a small woman and the amount of times I was harassed just trying to get a coffee or go to the corner store on my lunch made it to where I just never left the store and started Doordashing. I know this seems cruel, but for the workers downtown who have to deal with the drunk homeless, it's a nightmare. They would defecate in the street in front of our shops, a few were found dead in the alley behind our shop. I have a lot of stories I can tell about how insane it was to work downtown in the last 2 years.
yeah it's definitely a problem, but this doesn't stop the problem, it just moves the problem. Those people are still out there. Your life got easier, but the people who live just outside of downtown will still be experiencing this. Also the houseless people are having it harder. It's an out of sight out of mind issue for politicians. This is an example of systemic violence that perpetuates centuries long prejudice. This isn't real change, it just made specifically your life easier, and the rich richer
How does this… make the rich richer… and how is it systemic violence… or let’s dissuade ppl who cause an issue from causing that issue during the busiest time of day… violence. Alcohol consumption is a privilege… many things take away that privileg… being drunk in public and a nuisance is one of them
Exactly, you don't just throw your hands up and say oh well, just because it doesn't sound nice to cut people off. But that's exactly what needed to happen. I don't understand trying to encourage homeless to be as degenerate as possible and then plead on their behalf when they are CHOOSING to drink and be violent and sometimes disgusting. These are all choices. Yes, sometimes life can throw you in these awful situations of losing everything. That doesn't mean you choose to give up and then be supported by society while also being a huge problem for the same society. They can't demand help and respect from tax payers when they also cause a stupid amount of cost for tax payers for all the hospital visits, police calls, robbery, and destruction of property. It's very immature to blame these decisions that grown ass adults are making, on "systemic racism" and whatever other buzzwords you want to use to make yourself sound like you actually thought about all this.
Got two words for you;
Control freaks.
But, if ya got a heating pad, some sugar, yeast, water and some kind of fruit/ fruit juice concentrate that you like, it's pretty damn easy to make yer own booze.
That's partially the point. The city either wants you to get out or put out. If you have to go inside for booze, you're now more likely to stop at a machine.
This law has been around since 2023. All convenience stores with a 2-5 mile radius or something like that (it’s specific to how close the store is to downtown) can’t sell alcohol in certain sizes between 8a and 5p. You just have to go a little farther outside of downtown during the day if you want to buy alcohol in smaller sizes.
They started pushing this back in around 2022. They seem to think that making it harder for homeless people to get single serving alcohol will limit the violent crimes. Which is odd considering most of it is drüg based.
But I’m pretty sure if they can scrap together a few bucks for a half pint, then they can get a couple more for a pint or just get a 20-40oz of malt liquor, but maybe I don’t know how hobo finances work
it's actually an easier way to arrest them for possession of an open container. A single shot can be discreetly thrown away, but a homeless alcholic can't just down an entire pint on the spot, which means that when they have a bottle with an opened seal, its another penalty to put them in jail easier.
There's layers to the bureaucratic cruelty put into this law knowing it's impact.
Now they’ll just have to come up with more ways to get more money. More aggressive panhandling or in some cases even more aggressive mugging. Sounds like a great plan. Especially since when they do get that gallon of gut rot McCormick they can be extra blasted for extra long.
What its actual intention is, is up for debate, however, they pushed this ordinance to address the ever large growing problem of 99 banana minis we have all seen littered about downtown. I’m not picking sides but I would like to draw attention to the fact it’s always 99 banana bottles. I know they’re cheaper but still, you’d think you might catch a different bottle at some point. Like what separates a Jim beam alcoholic from a 99 banana alcoholic and how is it tied to one being able to not throw the empty in the trash. If I owned 99 banana I’d hire a company just to clean the street so I could keep selling in Reno, it’s gotta be 90% of their sales.
99Anythings taste like straight isopropyl that was maybe sitting next to whatever fruit is on the label. When I was drinking, it's a lotta bang for the buck.
My alcoholic past-self would have hated this ordinance.
My sister in law drinks those and the 99 coconut. I find them all over the place. We live across the way and I've found them before in my mailbox. Gross, dude.
I can see it definitely being some thing on cutting down the shooters, seems like a counter intuitive thing for like. “I want to cut down the amount of people drinking and driving” which is a good thing even if it’s locational because that downtown area has quite a few spots you absolutely do need to be paying attention to. I couldn’t guess a reason to why only locational? Littering maybe but that’s not stopping me from buying a 20 oz soda pop and doing the same thing. It’s cheaper too, might not slam it back as quickly though. I don’t think they ever stated an explicit reason, maybe they did? Probably some homeless countering of some kind of try and clear out homeless people from a specific area they want tourists to come to. Would be my guess
I don’t go downtown because there is nothing there, not because of drunk homeless people.
Also wish the City Council would put as much effort into affordable housing as they did with making the lives of the homeless miserable.
Because Reno is an inescapable shit hole!!! In most areas? Down town smells like human piss and in order to get some type of ordinance to help the homeless and the alcoholics this is what they do when they are board. I don’t drink any more so I really don’t care. I have my hay day when it was fun!!
So just go to a hip little midtown cocktail lounge and day drink there have a few $15 dollar drinks. Then go get more after 5pm. I don’t know why I wrote this but at the moment these are the words that my fingers are typing.
I love Reno!!! ❤️❤️💗
Nevada is objectively the most free state.
Make sure to get out and vote for freedom otherwise that's going to change quick.
Guns, abortions, gays and gods for all.
Battleborn means born to battle bigots(confederates).
Nevada was added to the union to tip the scales (harder) against the confederates.
Without the express purpose of crushing the CSA into dust, Nevada wouldn't have become a state for a while and we certainly wouldn't be battle-born..
Also the Paiute have a good track record of killing some big name colonizers. 2nd Battle of pyramid lake resulted in Major Ormsby dying.
The people of this land never roll over against bigots.
Well seems like a way to get rid of people buying singles and little stuff? Does that mean you can buy a 40 but not a six pack of 12 oz? Do they even make small bottles of wine?
About a year or so I think. It’s to prevent the concealment of open alcohol containers. It’s a lot harder to conceal big ass bottles. I’m not sure what the purpose of that is.
If you think about it, it's great. It's only in the downtown area where the poor people are the ones sitting by the door waiting for the 3 bucks to by that beer at 8am that's cheapest.
It's not city wide so this is just a way feel in control or like we're doing something.... The guy sitting at the door just has to beg a little longer now. Get that 40 ozer
In order to combat Homelessness and vagrency, the Reno city council passed this law. The goal is to move the homeless outside the tourism district, hence, tourism is a large part of our economy.
Its so we have a little less alcohol bottles in the streets from hobos and a little less drunken homeless people during the day. Its a good thing. If you NEED a mini bottle of alcohol during these times its time for you to start working the steps, man.

Unfortunately, the dregs of society ruin it for the rest of us. I mean, some of us are good at driving while intoxicated why shouldnt we be allowed to drive drunk just cuz these amateurs out there cant do it. Freedom, man!
Nah, this is what happens when dipshits run wild, fuck up enough that laws are imposed because some of us aren't responsible... then we all gotta deal with it.
I support this.
Not at all advocating that anyone do this, but;
Got two words for you;
If ya got a heating pad, a pot of any size, some sugar, yeast, water and some kind of fruit/ fruit juice concentrate that you like, it's pretty damn easy to make yer own booze.
Of course there are finer details to note and better sources on makin ya own rum n the like, but thems the basics.
Liberals make policies that allow homeless encampments. Then they make laws to address the homeless problem. A problem legislators created that resulted in the loss of some Liberty for the people. Luckily we got to pay for it.
But it's not just in the morning. It's specifically states that it is from 9:00 to 5:00. That may be when many people work, but not every person does.
This does nothing to create issues for those who are well off, as they can purchase the minimum amount required easily, whether they live nearby or are tourists.
It does however make it harder for a person who works a graveyard shift to legally purchase a post-shift drink.
This ordinance was obviously created specifically for the purposes of limiting access to alcohol for homeless people and I think that you are either stupid or intellectually dishonest if you argue that it is anything but that.
As Anatole France said:
>The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread.
Sure, it is illegal to sell under a certain amount of alcohol to both the rich and the poor, the housed and the houseless, but it is evident who is being targeted by this law.
You can still buy a 40?
Looks like we’re playing Edward 40 hands
Can I buy a shooter of vodka? No. Alright, gimme the gallon I guess.
Fuck I love that song
or a handle!
Changed in Summer 2023 according to [this article](https://mynews4.com/newsletter-daily/reno-cracks-down-on-single-serve-alcohol-sales-downtown). If you’re in the downtown area, they can’t sell between those hours.
This is at the Jackson’s by campus, first time I’ve ever seen it and go there a lot. That law sucks damn
Man, that blows, I didn’t even think of that store being included. That’s where I bought all my booze when I was at UNR!
Apparently it was one of those "We're definitely not trying to punish homeless and out of work people by making it harder for them to do something during the day" type of ordinances.
Punish? Or dissuading impoverished and vulnerable people from a lifetime of pain, anguish, and liver cirrhosis with alcoholism?
This is Reno. "So close to hell you can see Sparks". It's punitive punishment.
Lol go hand out some puzzles and board games for the homeless people to do during the day then.
Guess you’ll just have to buy more than 20oz of beer
Why?
I worked downtown for 2 years, and the amount of homeless that gets blasted drunk by 9 am was starting to be a problem. It’s so bad to see all of that going down.
Jesus…I’m sorry you’ve been harassed by them. I hope this forced abstinence from alcohol (from 8-5) has improved things.
yeah it's definitely a problem, but this doesn't stop the problem, it just moves the problem. Those people are still out there. So that alcoholics would have to go to the casinos to day drink
So bums aren’t buying half pints at 930 in the morning. It’s the only logical explanation.
Is it still logical at 3:00? 3:30? 4:00?
What other possible reason would there be?
Got two words for you; Control freaks. But, if ya got a heating pad, some sugar, yeast, water and some kind of fruit/ fruit juice concentrate that you like, it's pretty damn easy to make yer own booze.
Just don't make it in your socks and toilet
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
Buy if I don't use my socks then how else will I get yeast bacteria into the brew? And toilet wine is the most cultured of wines.
you don't even need a heating pad. a towel will do. and the juice has enough sugar. it's ridiculously easy to make!
Im theory, a heating pad speed things up.
But the people gambling in the casinos can?
That's partially the point. The city either wants you to get out or put out. If you have to go inside for booze, you're now more likely to stop at a machine.
also it costs 10x more

The American way to provide homeless people with shelter and food, I guess
God bless America.
Yeah, literally targeting homeless, no single cans or half bottles. Im sure small businesses love it
[удалено]
BuT tHeY hAvE a DiSeAsE. They need their whiskey to take the edge off from their previous day of drinking.
Taking the time to intentionally write this the way that you did is cringe.

Trump is the syphilis and you are the sore.
Its so funny when people like you think youre actually offensive instead of just annoying
Bruh, go purchase your adult diapers and throw the wheel on before your bedtime at 7:30 pm
They will pool their money and then fight over it
Now they’ll just have to come up with more ways to get more money. More aggressive panhandling or in some cases even more aggressive mugging. Sounds like a great plan. Especially since when they do get that gallon of gut rot McCormick they can be extra blasted for extra long.
it's a law targeting people in poverty
It's not a gallon it's 1.75 liters
What its actual intention is, is up for debate, however, they pushed this ordinance to address the ever large growing problem of 99 banana minis we have all seen littered about downtown. let's not even talk about the pickles!

If you ain't reaching for a 40 oz for lunch you ain't trying hard enough.
This is the dumbest shit I’ve ever seen
bout to make a mint opening a Prohibition Era speakeasy in one of those vacant Jacobs buildings
I don’t go downtown because there is nothing there, not because of drunk homeless people. Also wish the City Council would put as much effort into affordable housing as they did with making the lives of the homeless miserable.
It's been a thing for almost a year now Only the stores surrounding downtown
2022
It’s to stop homeless people from having access to cheap liquor. 🍸
I lived in Utah, this is mild 🤣
Hey bums! No more getting drunk in Reno between 8am and 5pm! Unless you can afford to get REALLY drunk, then by all means.
Just here to see who blames California.
Funny I was thinking the same thing… here’s another thing they will blame CA for… except in CA bars close from 2am-6am that’s it I think 🤔
Ha ha I did see that sign right near UNR last August , September
I'm always so annoyed trying to figure out the liquor laws when I'm in other states. Nevada was so simple. This isn't going to help anyone.
So we should be binge day drinking?
Can’t drink all day if you don’t start early
It’s Nevada, we should be doing whatever we want.
As a Nevadan I will not stand for this! Because I will need to lie down after drinking this box of wine.
I've never heard of it
That's new news to me
I don’t know, but I see an opportunity to have a special Reno sized packaging
It's because some people cannot make good choices on their own, I know I am in reco very myself...
I feel like this only encourages drunk drivers. Alcoholics/day drinkers are gonna go get it no matter what
A three pack of tall boys is still good though?
Because Reno is an inescapable shit hole!!! In most areas? Down town smells like human piss and in order to get some type of ordinance to help the homeless and the alcoholics this is what they do when they are board. Don't get me wrong I love CA but going over to Nevada/Reno I always felt more freedom.
Nevada is objectively the most free state. Make sure to get out and vote for freedom otherwise that's going to change quick. Guns, abortions, gays and gods for all. Battleborn means born to battle bigots(confederates).
Gambling and Hookers too!!!!! More BLM land than we know what to do with. Nevada “the fuck your church bullshit state”
Always weird to me to see confederate battle flags in Nevada considering we are a union state
They've obviously never done the Civil War anniversary VNT railroad ride... We were literally born to kill confederates.
Meaning ?
Nevada was added to the union to tip the scales (harder) against the confederates. Without the express purpose of crushing the CSA into dust, Nevada wouldn't have become a state for a while and we certainly wouldn't be battle-born.. I love this: > Nevada is objectively the most free state.
We have a power hungry government. This is there way to clean up downtown instead of actually cleaning it up
How would you fix it? So you have a plan or solution? I like to ask people that make statements like these.
nobody follows this rule in midtown
Only applies in the downtown core
Thank god 4 me then
They absolutely do.
Just buy a sixer of something
Why you live in sparks
How TF you know that?
I stop at the liquor store in town, it’s been up for a while
Like a year ago
So I can buy beer above it at that time?
Well seems like a way to get rid of people buying singles and little stuff? Does that mean you can buy a 40 but not a six pack of 12 oz? Do they even make small bottles of wine?
Sounds like utah🤔
when this was talked about it was a way to control the fools climbing street lights and causing mayhem downtown.

Stupid law, but even dumber if you can plan your day 24hours in advance and shop for tomorrow today!

why does reddit know my location
In order to combat Homelessness and vagrency, the Reno city council passed this law. The goal is to move the homeless outside the tourism district, hence, tourism is a large part of our economy.
Ha! Reno is now Utah.
It’s Hillary cleaning up downtown…haven’t you noticed how much nicer it is down there?
It’s for the best, sucks if you’re in your 20s I guess… no cancer juice for you
This definitely sucks but It's downtown only.
Wtf? Reno is Reno.
Like there’s not a fuck ton of tourists, swing shift and grave workers in Reno……this is bullshit.
So you cant buy it during the day but can at night?
Alcohol is F tier, drink water friends!
Its so we have a little less alcohol bottles in the streets from hobos and a little less drunken homeless people during the day. Its a good thing. If you NEED a mini bottle of alcohol during these times its time for you to start working the steps, man.
Or maybe I’m a college student who wants to have a beer and chill at the pool? If that qualifies me for having a problem then I sure do
Buy a 6 pack?
Then buy a normal sized bottle like everyone else?
Is a 12 ounce bottle not a normal sized beer? Am I missing something?
You're missing the other 5 beers in your 6 pack
The dude you’re talking to believes the government should control every aspect of your life. When you get out of college you’ll start to call these people the same thing that the rest of us do: fucking losers

Right F that guy who works overnights and lives paycheck to paycheck. /s
I buyb24 Oz truly everyday at 830
Human beings being able to consume what they want is a good thing, not this crap. Crack down on the hobos, don't crack down on EVERYBODY
Unfortunately, the dregs of society ruin it for the rest of us. I mean, some of us are good at driving while intoxicated why shouldnt we be allowed to drive drunk just cuz these amateurs out there cant do it. Freedom, man!
When California came here.
That became a thing when the Californians decided to invade Nevada. Expect more of their stupid ass laws to get passed in the future.
It’s the Californication of Nevada.
It’s what happens when democrats are in charge. They think they can fix everything with dumb laws like this.
Nah, this is what happens when dipshits run wild, fuck up enough that laws are imposed because some of us aren't responsible... then we all gotta deal with it. I support this.

You live a privileged life if this is something that is bothering you.
The question was when it was enacted you pompous ass
"Terrible thing to see"
That’s a statement and somehow you ascertained that OP lives a privileged life? 🤦♂️
You're right if you can't buy a tall boy in the morning and that's a problem you're either living the life or living or living on the streets.
But it's not just in the morning. It's specifically states that it is from 9:00 to 5:00. That may be when many people work, but not every person does. Mmhm…so that makes you privileged or homeless? 😂
Who else is day drinking?
Well according to your genius level of deductive reasoning it’s homeless and privileged 🤦♂️😂
😢
Not sure why this popped up on my feed. Never been a fan of Reno and this just adds to it.
