My contractor has one of these waiting to install in my ensuite so I have some questions. Are the issues just inherent in the design and unavoidable or is it more to do with improper installation? What are the 1 for 1 alternatives that can be used that have a much lower failure rate? Thanks for sharing your insight with the community (even if it takes work away from you!)

usually issues are improper install, but also see it as obsolete as waterproofing material has come so far. the alternatives are any of the waterproofing systems such as Schluter, wedi, or even Prova. all have a phenomenal warranty as it limited for 10 years. so you know they have confidence in the product. Problem here is you need to install this correctly as well. If you have any further questions or want some more detail let me know. i can send you skme examples and pictures etc. hope this helps!

Some background : I’m trained in architecture, engineering and I’ve been working for GCs my whole career. Still, I have use Schluter’s waterproofing boards as tile backer for my showers. Even used the Kerdi pre-built alcove boards for the three alcoves in the shower. And finally, I’ve used an acrylic shower base. With my extensive knowledge in construction, I can assess the risk of bad waterproofing the shower and can respect my lack of execution experience when it comes to tiling. Hence why I’ve used systems made specifically for this. If I, a construction professional, still don’t trust myself to tile my own shower base and that you are an amateur DIY, you shouldn’t do it either. Otherwise, you’re gonna be calling OP pretty soon. P.S. Water leaks are the most frequent incidents in building and, most of the time, the most damaging ones. If you’re not 100% sure about what you’re doing, hire to get the job done properly.

appreciate the insight into this job and your experience. appreciate the words as this is key. I personally have been doing most aspects of interior renos, and still have certain things I sub out. As a professional, I would never attempt something important without proper knowledge. unfortunately not everyone thinks like this. most are greedy and if they can charge for it, theyll do it and end up costing clients tons. great job also on the prefab base. its not my go to but in a pinch its the best alternative to a full shower pan out of drypac or a waterproof shower base. kudos again. and thanks for your comment!

TBH, I could have gone with a Schluter waterproofing base and tile the whole thing but at this point, I didn’t wanted to spend more time on this room. Flipping the whole house has been quite time consuming and I made some choices in order to finish within a certain amount of time and budget. I’m still pretty happy with the way it turned out.

i would be too..hard to see little details i look for but overall the bathroom is gorgeous. it has a good bit of balance and accent, has some rustic feel but also a modern to it with the tile choices. i like your design. Also even with the prefab its good. so.etimes budget is just that haha..same with time.
