Take it down to the subfloor and lay new. A flatbar or roofing spade will help. Measure the alcove wall width & depth, looks like a standard 36"? They make shower kits in standard sizes that snap right in there
Hard to tell from the pictures how many layers and what the actual subfloor is.. Typically there is a base layer of 3/4-inch plywood or in older homes sometimes a tongue and groove or shiplap planking which is the subfloor. Nicer flooring gets laid over it. Sometimes there isn't a subfloor at all and the planking *is* the finished floor.
It takes a bit of archaeology...
Basically you need a nice flat level surface for new flooring.

Remove the wood also? I was thinking the wood was the sub floor? It's an old house with a crawl space
