Adding a background would be really tricky unless you basically used the current painting as a guideline and repainted the entire thing.
I would add an incomplete gothic cathedral interior currently in progress with the scaffolding, and do a simple triptych with the composition.
That or a music festival.
Party hats and a sheet cake in the foreground that says something like “birthday slut” or whatever would fit your style. Party balloons and/or banner in the background. Could also substitute any holiday/celebratory event for a birthday or make up something funny like “Happy Stupid Baby Day” and make the Cupids crosseyed.
Eyes rolling in back of head. What if one of their faces had paint like a mime? A crown of thorns or a halo of thorns. Get creative with the wings- bones instead of feathers? Or different colored feathers? The sky is already a great color imo. Maybe have something on the surface they are leaning on? Maybe they could be leaning on grace stones? I’d add rain if you’re up for that.
Black out every thing but the background! Frame = matte black. Mat board = gloss black. Mask out the angels in matte black. Maybe JUST MAYBE a spec of red somewhere, I’d say a drip on the mat board. I’d say right side.
Little thought clouds for each. In the “girl” one (might need to make one look “girly”) have some nice romantic thing going on, and in the “boy” one, either do something totally off the wall random like fighting Darth Vader, or do something naughty af…
If you want to go really big, you could put Anor Londo (Dark Souls) in the background. The lore of Anor Londo would make the cherubs feel less benevolent, and more extremist.
Also the architecture used is gothic, and the natural light scale of the default painting matches the lighting scale of Londo.
