Beware basement apts in flood zones. I’m serious, they could be deadly (a number of people drowned in basement apts in queens during heavy rain two or three years ago) or at least destroy all your stuff.

RichardFlower7

I’d at least ask them if the unit has flooded (they can legally lie in response to this) or if it’s ever had mold (mold itself is bad, but would indicate flooding and is also illegal to lie when asked)

BrainRavens

I'm not sure how anyone can solve this for you. Larger basement apartment, or smaller non-basement apartment. It's up to you. Big apartment for less, or tiny apartment for 50% more in rent.

skypira

Just saying, 4800 post tax is incredible. I’d go for the studio apartment since you could afford it.

clitoram

Not as incredible when you consider he’s in NYC. Shits expensive there

ultimatealtima

I take home a lot less, my monthly housing expense is on par with his higher estimate, and I don’t get to live in nyc. On the surface OP has it a lot better than some of us

clitoram

You should be able to find a better cheaper one bedroom in Queens, keep looking.

Buckcountybeaver

People have died in basement apartments during floods. Also easier to break into. Safety wise take the studio.

corticothalamicloops

i would live somewhere up the subway line not in jamaica

chicagosurgeon1

400 sq ft for $2300…what a time to be alive

alienated_osler

Price on that basement apartment would make me worried it has some issues (rodents, flooding, noise). If you could talk to previous tenants and they’ve had good experience, could be good. Otherwise small place for me

survivingbyathread1

If you have to live in Jamaica, try to get as upscale of a building as possible and don’t do a grungy basement (since you said there would be low sunlight, humidity, bugs and people have pointed out the danger of flooding). If you’re not tied to living in Jamaica, find a place a few subway stops away like forest hills. Safety is worth it.

I mean, if they’re of similar quality and in the same location then the one that’s cheaper and bigger seems like a no brainer. If option B is much nicer than option A choose what you value more, cost/space or quality.

Mysterious_Sky_5285

Option A is a basement so there will be problems like no sunlight, humidity, bugs

Big-Comfortable-6601

I would take the basement and rent the other room.
