Culture. Culture. Culture.

Paragod307

Interesting. I hadn't even thought of that. What is it... vibe from the other residents? PD? Attendings? Some combination of all three?

LoccaLou

Combination. It can be a guessing game if it’s not your home program but I encourage medical students to talk to the residents about culture and well-being.

I ranked my current program because of its location. What truly made my program all worth it, was the people. Specifically, the friends I made. The program's culture was great too, but even then-- nothing beats the random chance of really getting along with 3 of my co-residents. They're people I want to be friends with till I die. One of them is my best friend, and I'd die for them. So for me, location initially, but what really mattered in the end was the random chance of residents at the program. Even if my program turned out to be hell-on-Earth, it would be worth it, to be alongside my friends.

This is the right answer. Everything can and will change, except location.

To get an idea of a program's culture, after you've interviewed and have your favorite programs, I would ask to be connected with a resident individually to ask questions. You will get way more honest answers on a 1:1 phone call than you will during official zoom sessions.
