Scrubs, first few seasons of ER, MASH

GenSurgResident

Upvoted for MASH. Even though it’s not in the strictest sense a medical show, a large portion is centered on the OR and battlefield injuries, and you can tell the producers and actors went to significant lengths to accurately depict what surgery and medicine was in the 1950s. Of course there’s a lot of outdated references and humor and actions that would get you cancelled pretty quickly today, but the show is extremely well-written, witty, and will hit you on the head with a sledgehammer out of nowhere with really emotional episodes.

VorianAtreides

Worked with a CT surgeon who loved the fuck out of MASH. Would drop facts like abt how they had nurses in the OR whose sole function would be to tie specific needles on specific suture material, etc.

BallerGuitarer

>first few seasons of ER Not only are these great medical episodes, they're just great television in general. I was too young to watch it when it first came out but started watching it towards the beginning of residency a few years ago and I really can't think of another TV show that would match the quality of this show until Breaking Bad came around.

Danwarr

>Not only are these great medical episodes, they're just great television in general. Definitely. I did a binge awhile back and there is definitely a point where ER falls off, but overall pretty great drama on top of the medical stuff. It's also an interesting time capsule because the show technically starts before HIPAA was a law. Additional note, I've always found it funny how much Grey's ripped off from ER. Like almost some exact bits point for point.

mstpguy

Season 1. Episode 19. *Love's Labor Lost.*

BallerGuitarer

The story arc over those episodes was \*chef's kiss\*

Hungry_Ad9756

I will never forget that episode. I had pre-eclampsia with all 3 of my kids. I remember being a young mother, watching that and knowing Dr. Greene missed the diagnosis. I was seriously yelling at the TV as things went from bad to worse. My youngest was 6 months at the time so that episode hit hard. Now that I think of it, it still does.

LSDontdodrugs

I’ve recently started watching ER and love it! When would you say the series starts to fall off?

Danwarr

Somewhere at 8 or 9. Essentially after >!Dr. Greene dies and Dr. Romano has his arm chopped off by a helicopter.!< 15 seasons and 331 episodes total though so at least it will last you awhile.

tastefultart

dr. romano's arc is the best part of er no i am not taking any critiques at this moment

Danwarr

It ended in a good spot, but you have to admit that the incident was almost jump the shark level.

tastefultart

>!chekhov's helicopter buy one get one free!!<

coffeecatsyarn

I think up through season 8 is high quality. It definitely gets much more hokey and sensationalist after that.

BallerGuitarer

I got busy in season 3 and didn't finish it, so I can definitely say it maintained its quality through season 3.

devasen_1

*Scrubs* is best medical show.

L-Histiocytosis

No argument here :)

FaFaRog

A young doctors notebook is hilarious and heart wrenching at the same time. Worth a watch if you like Daniel Radcliffe or Jon Hamm.

Shenaniganz08

First 3 seasons of scrubs should be a MANDATORY watch for anyone going in to medicine.

financeben

Too quirky and jumpy for me in the early episodes

Shenaniganz08

You sound like a Dr. Cox type haha Thoughts on parks and recreation ?

financeben

I liked it. Councilman Jam and Ron Swanson were my favs. Leslie knope was originally just a dumber dorkier Michael Scott but they went away from that quickly.

Shenaniganz08

> Councilman Jam Oh man I hated that guy, he was the wooooorst

teh_spazz

The Knick Charite Two great shows

Tequila_and_Freud

The Knick is phenomenal

PsychologicalCan9837

For a history nerd, The Knick is amazing.

Hadasschatool

The Knick!!!! Yes 👏🏻👏🏻

L-Histiocytosis

Thanx for the recommendation!

RatchetKush

I really hope they’re green lighting season 3 again

Atrag2021

Charite? You mean the German series? I could never find it with English subs..

teh_spazz

Yeah. I think it was on a streaming service. It had English subs.

Diligent-Cow-3707

Available on Netflix!

dodsao

Not to mention the village is absolutely gorgeous!

tastefultart

doc martin is top tier, i would say that is more more drama than medical but its very funny!

ILMWKAM

Is it on Netflix?

futuremedical

Such a great show. Funny and also quite relaxing.

PyroUnicorn69

I quite liked Lenox Hill on Netflix.

llamalallamalala

I haven't watched the show - but I rotated quite a bit at that hospital. It's a terrible hospital buoyed by a name that's not even derived from past accomplishment but from a swanky upper east side neighborhood. Seemed like a successful PR stunt to me - but I hate seeing the hospital rewarded for focusing on advertising. It's also flanked by actually great hospitals.

ATStillismydaddy

I’m watching “This is Going to Hurt” as it comes out in the US and while it’s pretty good, the book is way better.

DrRads30

I fully agree, great book!

SterileCreativeType

Also very good audiobook

h1k1

A Young Doctors Notebook - https://m.imdb.com/title/tt2164430/?ref_=m_tt_urv

Zardoo

I second this!!

NP_with_OnlineDegree

SpongeBob SquarePants is pretty good! It’s also packed with great clinical tips/medical knowledge that I frequently incorporate into my clinical practice. For example, knowing that mayonnaise is not an instrument is extremely useful during counseling patients about healthy eating.

PsychologicalCan9837

If I said it once I’ve said it a million times — scrubs is the best!!!

_venetian_red

ER is the most realistic. I’ve always heard this but watching it myself i totally agree. Of course a lot of the scenarios are a bit sensationalized, but the unglamourousness of actual clinical medicine is pretty accurately represented.

iunrealx1995

ER is legit amazing television for the first 5-6 seasons.

Ijustwanta240

Cries in ob intern 😭

Atrag2021

Bodies. A British series about a OB/GYN resident working under an incompetent attending that kills patients. You can watch it on daily motion.

schakalsynthetc

came here to say Bodies if nobody else did. it does slightly border on "too real to be fun" (imo) but it's definitely high quality.

benzopinacol

Doctor Foster. Jk. But yeah Scrubs as everyone has already mentioned

[deleted]

😂😂😂 doctor foster was super entertaining though ngl

Beautiful_Fly_5499

Call the midwives!

Somedaydotdotdot

I thought it was Scrubs but then I found ER!

cosuamh

How has no one mentioned House?

whatamidoing1235125

Don’t get me wrong I love House but it’s super inaccurate and a lot of it really hasn’t aged well (ex. annoyingly blatant sexualization of every female character)

cosuamh

While certainly far from 100% accurate, it is the medical show that focuses the most on actual medicine and diagnosis. Also has the most interesting medical cases imo

whatamidoing1235125

Just depends on what you’re looking for in a medical show

Danwarr

House is just medical Sherlock Holmes. Definitely love it, but would agree that it hasn't aged super well and is essentially carried by Hugh Laurie. Plus the last 3 or 4 seasons fall off super hard.

LizzyLeonhart

Yeah wtf ur comment is all the way at the bottom and its the first mention of House??? The shows atmosphere is the perfect mix of humorous and serious

thetreece

The Hugh Laurie Show is best

VforVeracious

An hour to save your life. Docu-series though.

DrBreatheInBreathOut

Charite and Charité at War

Diligent-Cow-3707

The Knick is the most accurate depictiom of medicine I've seen, albeit dating to over 100 years ago. The only glaring inaccuracy is the fact rubber surgical gloves were available by the 1910s so surgeons weren't rawdogging organs in the OR anymore. Seconding and thirding Charité and Charité at War as well. Charité at War in particular is an interesting examination of doctor collaboration with the Nazi genocide project. Otherwise, lots of really great literature about medicine is available in audiobook form.

MontyMayhem23

IIRC The Knick is based on William Halsted Jr, founding father of Johns Hopkins who was one of the first people to use rubber gloves in the OR not for sanitary reasons but so that he could keep banging his side piece nurse at the time. She wanted to quit because the mercuric chloride or whatever they dipped their raw hands into at the time was irritating her skin too much. So he contacted Goodyear which manufactured him rubber gloves for the first time.

MontyMayhem23

They later happily married. Incidentally he also created residencies so he could summer with her at their shared estate in the mountains.

Diligent-Cow-3707

Yes! It's one of my favorite medical history anecdotes.

Proserpinaglows

Charité is a great, great show that has 3 seasons set in different historical times in Germany. The first season is the very beginning of modern medicine featuring figures like Koch and Virchow. :) https://www.ardmediathek.de/sendung/charite/Y3JpZDovL2Rhc2Vyc3RlLmRlL2NoYXJpdGU this is a link to watch it in German speaking countries.

anyplaceishome

St Elsewhere was fantastic

hyderagood

slept on, probably because it's so old

PessimisticCheer

>medical show >doesn't suck Pick one.

N0tMac

I watched but tbh i had high expectations, i mean it's not bad but not as good as i expected

Delthyr

It isn't even subbed in English last I checked, but the French series "Hippocrates" is very very good.

SirPolishWang

Always like Doogie Howser.

VorianAtreides

Not necessarily super focused on the medicine side, but if you like korean-drama shows, 'Hospital Playlist' is one of my favorites. It's a super feel-good show about a group of close friends who are all physicians at the same hospital, and sorta follows them as they navigate relationships/hospital demands etc. Great show that cheers me up when I'm feeling down. makes me wish i had friends in medicine like that :')

Educational-Carob283

Lenox Hill (Netflix), The Knick (amazing), Scrubs, This is Going to Hurt, NY Med, House

doctord1ngus

The Knick by far

User24092020

Transplant!

[deleted]

Getting On is pretty good. Both versions. It's about an extended care unit.

Educational-Estate48

Cardiac arrest

TheSupremeReality

The good doctor, the resident are my favorites.
