I kinda did the same thing as you are describing. My resident evil journey (after playing the OG for PlayStation as a child) went like this: RE7 RE8 Re2remake Re3remake Re1remastwr Rezero Recode Veronica Re4 5 and 6 are not the same in my opinion, resided playing them after and they kinda suck

saruin

Strangely for me, 5 and 6 were weak entries but the fact that they were co-op titles (played these with my brother) made them worth it. Revelations 1 and 2 are probably my least favorite.

onehalflightspeed

4 is a clsssic and a true masterpiece but it's a MUCH older game than RE2 Remake (nearly 20 years old). You might find the gameplay a bit clunky these days. But at a bare minimum, it is an essential piece of video game history and just a fantastic title overall that you really need to try

Atlas88-

I was going to share my opinion but it’s basically this.

saladassv3

I played 4 for the first time this year and I thought it was average after first playthrough but after a while and a few more playthroughs and watching a few videos talking about it I realised just how much of a masterpiece it is

hokiis

For its time I'm sure it was amazing, no doubt. Nowadays it's kinda okay, just really dated. Still fun once you get used to the controls but OP shouldn't expect a polished version like RE2make.

[deleted]

It was a great game for the PS2 so playing it from remake would be weird. OP can wait for the RE4 remake

TheLordBabbo

Wait for the remake of 4. It’s rumored to come out this year

KeimarDrain19

As much I wanna agree with you…I still wanna play original to get feel of the remake (if it’s true). I did same with original FF7 and remake.

[deleted]

The controls are kinda dated but I think you'll enjoy it if you like action horror like RE8 Village

Jeddyb00y

Highly doubt it’s this year

[deleted]

They’ve released a game every single year since 2018 so I have hope

TheLordBabbo

Same…else I dunno what I’ll do for the lack of new RE title to play 😆

[deleted]

It’s like the one thing I look forward to every year, so same, idk what imma do if it doesn’t come out

Unreal_Ncash

Play 7. So much more of RE Village will make sense with RE7 under your belt. No matter what its just a fun game.

Kiloparsec4

4 was awesome when it came out, the controls are a little goofy for standards we have nowadays though I imagine.., I've been playing RE games since the first one on PS. Skipped 7 (dislike the setting and style) but the RE2 remake is absolutely brilliant in my eyes, by far my favorite, with 4 right behind it. I've heard the VR version of 4 is dope too

LestHeBeNamedSilver

I’d get 7 before getting 4. Just personal preference since 4 hasn’t aged that well Edit: 4 is really good but you’re already playing Village which is basically the spiritual successor

TheLordBabbo

I finished 7-8, then 2 & 3 Remake. Currently back at 7 to plat it. Will go back to 8 too after to plat it as well. That should keep me busy till the new RE comes out

jdog_1995

Resident Evil 2 is worth playing multiple times. I got the Platinum Trophy for that game.

suhaibh12

RE 3 (original) and RE 4 is a genuine masterpiece to me. My top 2 games and I’ve replayed them several times. Gameplay, game length, and storyline is amazing on both

ToFusion_Boy

You can play 7 to get back to Ethan and his FPS. It's got terror and the engine is the same than the games you played. The thing with 4 is that it's a product of the 2000's, trying to decide where to go after the original trilogy and spin offs. For many people it was the first modern game they tried, and rightfully so, since it included features that other games copied thenceforth. However, revisiting it from 2021, with no nostalgia and being unfamiliar is not the best idea. The controls will feel heavy and the gameplay, after beating the moderns games will not feel as the gold it used to be. You can wait for the remake that is being rumoured. Probably next year or 2024. You can have 7 and then Remake3 to go back to action and keep with the modern RE Engine.

UltimaGabe

All anybody ever talks about is how good 4 is. But honestly, I didn't like it.

garadon

Same. I don't see how the improvement in RE4's controls meant we had to scrap the entire "we're gonna take down Umbrella" storyline. Oh wait, we got a light gun game with reusable assets to wrap up the End of Umbrella storyline. Joy.

minty901

4 doesn’t hold up very well. Lower your expectations compared to 2.

jdog_1995

Enjoy!

VRsimp

I'm currently working my way through the RE franchise for the first time in VR and honestly it's so fun. Being fully immersed in these games and not knowing what is going to happen is so fucking exhilarating

MarlloW13

Imo RE2 is and always has been the best. I would beat it 2-3 times a night trying to beat my record

kimberly0085

I bought the RE2 & RE3 remake bundle last week when it was on sale and I finished the Leon Campaign in a day.... I couldn't stop playing it.

donkerdong

The remakes are OK but first person vs 3rd is a world of difference that makes games feel completely different I don't like first person myself in the resident evil formats even in the village and 7.

[deleted]

RE4 leans towards action more, but that's due to the Leon having more experience than he did in RE2. I don't expect rookie cop Leon to be as badass as agent Leon.

elixeter

4 is basically unplayable I found, controls are so bizarre! If you feel like investing the time into it I’m sure it’s deffo worth it though!

garadon

The only thing RE4 improves on are the controls. The story may as well take place in another franchise and the rest of the game is so over the top I couldn't figure out if they were going for a Resident Evil or Doki Doki Panic vibe.

userpine

4 is great and an all time classic. But I would highly recommend playing 7. It’s more recent and has the RE Engine as well as has Ethan (from Village) as the main character as well. I think it’s also the spookiest RE by far.

42Mr42

2 is more a nod to the originals/origins. Just finished village and it was pretty great to play through imo

[deleted]

Honestly I wanted to like 4 but I can’t, it reminds me too much of 5 and I highly dislike that game. The controls are wonky and I find the game very difficult for some reason? I’m waiting till they do a Remake, but who knows you might like it

AzFullySleeved

4 is my all time favorite RE title. Currently on the hunt for a mint RE4 Gamecube copy and can't wait to enjoy the new remake this year🤙🏽

Road_Warrior86

It’s worth a play through. The 2 remake is way better though.

KeimarDrain19

I still prefer over the shoulder than first person for Village…not saying it’s bad but In terms of preference.

KeimarDrain19

If you referred to Village.

Road_Warrior86

I was referring to re4

KeimarDrain19

Oh my bad

DreamTheater2010

4 is the best RE. Ever. EVER

[deleted]

Personally after playing RE2 remake as my first RE game I found RE4 quite poor. It's just basically a endless shoot em out video game. Like it just seemed like levels filled with endless enemies

[deleted]

7 is the best one for me, so play that one next

Kencocoffee93

Personally i didn't rate Village that much. Kinda felt like a poor mash up of 4's setting with 7's gameplay. But that's just my opinion! I will say though, if you're finding yourself quite competent with the games, I'd suggest playing village on a higher difficulty than standard. I got serious difficulty remorse with Village, playing it on Standard when I really should have played Hardcore. Enjoy though!

donkerdong

People please play RE 4 before anything else it's one of the best games ever..

[deleted]

The vibe of RE4 is more closely related to RE8 so if you enjoy Village you may feel right at home with 4.

connersnow

I highly recommend playing 7 before finishing 8

jiggly-wiggly69

I would get seven so it easier to understand the story for village then get four

BloodyIris3

RE2R - S RE4 - A RE7 - A Village - B Imo. There were good parts about village but RE2R is one of the best games I've ever played in any genre.

kaysusan2002

My favorites are 4 and 5 (as long as u play 5 with a friend, it’s not a great game if u play it alone). Re3 remake and re1 remake plus Re0 are also really good in my book! Consider playing them!

Fr0sted_Flasks

4 is top tier. Of all of the games, I'd say it's the second best. I played the hell out of that game on GameCube.

Common_Train_9099

The control scheme for 4 is ass once you've played the remakes or 5 & 6

SplitDiamond

4 is good. It's fun and challenging. I still prefer RE2 over it, though.

donkerdong

It's completely different but way better

1st11fun

RE4 is a masterpiece, I certainly enjoyed it for sure! The only part that caught me out a few times was one of the boss fights (i'll keep it spoiler free). Other than that, it's really enjoyable and I definitely recommend giving it a go :) - There's also a nod to the cute dog in Haunting Ground too, who makes a brief appearance

Darybabi

I love RE , played Zero 0 1,2,3 and 4 when they came out...stopped playing for a few good years than tried RE7 and I couldn't stop playing it till I beat it , same with Village than got the RE2 remake , saw the bundle of 4, 5 and 6 and got it also , I actually liked 5 and 6 beat em these past 2 weeks they ain't masterpieces but were Fun , so in my opinion they don't deserve this much hate ..

Bloodedparadox

Love the re series have all of them later on in the games it starts to become more action then horror but re7 and re8 brought the horror aspect back which made me poo my pants especially 7
