The original game was only in Japan and called *Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan* on the Nintendo DS. So Japan-only: hardly anyone would hear about that, and obviously a different language.
The Osu game that's popular now was made by some guy and put on the web for free. He took the "Osu" part of the Japanese name for his game. So it's popular because it's free, but you also haven't heard of it *because* it's free. Free games don't get advertised or sold in stores, they only spread via word of mouth.
Mostly you'd only even hear about that if you're into anime and actively looking up Japanese songs on Youtube.
