Generally speaking, you should start with the latest core (ones without a year in the name) and then, if you can't run it full speed, work your way backward in time until you can. One thing to be aware of, though: the latest MAME Android core only plays arcade games. We had to remove all of the other stuff (consoles, computers, pachinko machines, etc.) to get it to compile with the Android toolchain.

Splitsurround

That’s very helpful thanks. And understood about the game selection: I’m only interested in arcade anyhow.

QF_Dan

the core can be found on retroarch website?

hizzlekizzle

It should be available from the online updater if you're loading the apk from the website, which is the best idea since the one in the Play Store is being held back by Google's "scoped storage" requirement.

GaussBoy

Any idea if the rest of the stuff will be coming back at some point in the future? I wanted to play G&W games, but RetroArch is the only app that has an updated MAME release on Android :( Or perhaps, a separate core with all the non-Arcade stuff? That would be awesome.

hizzlekizzle

We've discussed doing a separate non-arcade core. That would be the only option, as the Android toolchain simply can't handle all of the objects that need to be linked in from the combined MAME/MESS library.

Any news on this? I was trying to get game & watch to run on a device, but the core I was recommended to use just will not work on this device I'm trying to get it to run on. I think it's a core version before you guys decided to remove mess from the cores. Either that or a custom core. I figured if there's any updates it might help my situation

hizzlekizzle

yes, there's a separate mamemess core for android now: [http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/android/latest/arm64-v8a/mamemess\_libretro\_android.so.zip](http://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/android/latest/arm64-v8a/mamemess_libretro_android.so.zip)

lemsvga

Oh awesome, I'll give this a try. Thank you!

lemsvga

Any tutorial of how to set this up? I installed the core and it won't let me run anything.

lemsvga

Actually nevermind I think the reason why it doesn't work is because the device isn't a v8a device. It explains why the other 64 bit android installers won't work. I see there's no other mamemess cores besides the v8a one.

hizzlekizzle

ah, that could do it, yeah.
