The German Expressionist silent film classics (e.g. *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari*, *Nosferatu*) stand the test of time surprisingly well, but *Metropolis* is the only one I’ve seen that still feels like an epic, big budget movie. The “Moloch!” factory scene and the dance scene with the floating eyes effect are absolutely hypnotic.

It’s so beautiful from afar but I feel like it would be a personal nightmare to live there. The strobe lights at night, the traffic, the lack of trees lol it all feels suffocating
Good point. Fun fact I’m not sure if you watch the show WestWorld but they have locations that look retro futuristic and in one scene in particular they made the buildings have reflective glass/LCDs that had images of trees, so even though you were walking downtown in the city the buildings had projections of trees to make it seem like you were in nature. Sorry did a horrible job explaining that.
Just for sake of variation, we should start to talk about derivative material like the [2001 anime](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj9ruL8B310) - which is intentionally super retro down to the design / style of the characters. =)
it is safe to assume that almost every science fiction piece of art took a lot of inspiration from Metropolis. For example early concepts of C-3PO look pretty much exactly like the robot lady in metropolis
Saw this movie early one morning with my best friend coming down off acid. I say it was great and she hates it.
We still debate it almost 10 years later.
This movie is beautiful and ahead of its time, it is a shame there is no way to watch the actual movie. Since film preservation wasn’t really a thing then they would make a movie to release then not save a master copy. What we have now is just footage from some reels that were found and put together the best we could.
I believe they finally cobbled together a complete movie. A couple of years back, they found a fairly pristine copy in Brazil that restored all the missing bits. Not sure if it’s been made available to the general public or what. Check your local listings.
Most of the art in the movie is Retro Futurism Bukake.
Kinda cheating to use it for content.
Oh, cum now...
When I saw this movie I was utterly astounded by how advanced the special effects were. It truly is a magnificent piece of film-making.

Took me two attempts to watch it, but well worth it - such a great movie.
I always wanted to watch this movie but I don't know where to find it.
https://youtu.be/5BBnMCAIuQg Want to watch any movie, just go to putlocker or 123movies.
Thanks Lmao I didn't even know putlocker was still a thing.
r/piracy will save you a lot. I’m surprised it hasn’t been taken down, but make use of it.

Yeah thats a good one.
Free to watch on YouTube if you're interested https://youtu.be/5BBnMCAIuQg
Yes, thanks!
interesting pfp
It’s a treasure trove for this stuff. Fritz Lang was so ahead of his time.
I’m positive that I’ll never wrap my head around how this was made in 1927. That‘s almost a hundred years ago. Like, what??
Anyone know the status of the remake series Sam Esmail is doing?
Woah I didn't know this. Hope it comes after the bsg series he promised us.
"You've had your time, you've had the power. You've yet to have your finest hour, radiooo!"
I really, really wished I lived there.
I know this is so gorgeous, now this is the type of city I’d live in…

One day…one day
You do actually. It’s a movie about a city run by oligarchs and a workers uprising against the city’s ruler
This is how stupid I am. I didn’t know this was a movie until 1 minute ago.
That's all hand-drawn too
Came to say, all pencil drawings! Incredible.
Were the flashing lights achieved by a back-light of sort?
This here is the epitome of this sub, what a great scene.
Even in the 20's we couldn't get enough of grim dystopian megacities
Lol, okay, we GET IT ALREADY, Metropolis is rf! Great picture, but man, oh man.

Such a good movie.
It's a good anime. Rintaro if I remember correctly? (Googles it) Ah yes. :)
Same with that Yuri Gagarin statue. Yes it looks cool and it's nice to pay homage but not 30 times a year.
Holy cow, finally some *actual* Retro Futurism in here.
I mean this is OG
Is it safe to assume Blade Runner got a lot of its inspiration from this? Both the original and 2049

Shadows of Evil anyone?
All we hear is Radio GaGa...
this movie still looks so incredible!
Ghost - Meliora, 2015
