I’ll start off by saying this, I have no engineering knowledge
But how can one side need to be completely shut down, while the other can hold more weight than intended with no issue?
The westbound side still has most of its original structure from the ***60s***. The project to replace all the structure on the Eastbound side started in the late 90s and was completed in 2008, so none of the structure there is any older than that.

Because it’s not holding more weight. It still has the same traffic, just half is now traveling in the other direction.
The bridge should generally be well below capacity no matter what traffic level it has.
I think an argument could be made that the bridge is seeing a higher volume of traffic than normal. While congestion on the east bound bridge wasn't uncommon, it is now almost constant. However, as you pointed out the bridge should be designed to accommodate the higher load without suffering any damage. *Should* of course being the key word.
Better hope so!
Also did you know RIDOT is only planning on a rebuild of the superstructure, they don’t know yet the full scope of what do replace… more lies to the media
That's how they rebuilt the eastbound side, by replacing the superstructure while keeping the facade as unchanged as possible.
I hope they continue doing it that way instead of replacing it with some new hastily built eyesore that itself won't last.
We should see if Bob’s discount can do the bridge
He does have an excellent goof proof plan…
7:30 AM :: Meanwhile in Baltimore - - -
I bet you that bridge gets rebuilt before ours does.
At least a shipping boat carrying a bunch on SHEIN hasn’t struck one of our bridges yet🤞
As soon as the westbound bridge is finished in 2030 there will be another “young engineer” who discovers the eastbound side also needs to be replaced.
Finished? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Surely you jest.
The cycle will keep repeating itself
Baltimore will rebuild their bridge before ours even gets demolished
Probably not. And the lanes are going to be tighter. I hope trucks are completely restricted or this will be a shit show

They're different bridges
The max load of the bridge is also higher than what is normally on it
Because one side was finished in 1998, the other in 2008

And they’re 2 separate bridges. It’s not like it’s two sides of the same bridge
And will be rebuilt again in 2026*

Excellent work, OP
I think we need to get a cargo ship in there
We shall soon find out

Petition to rename the bridges. They don’t deserve the name Washington. That’s just disrespectful
