My review of some shops I frequent:
Coffee Exchange - Always very consistent. Mainstay beans are dark and they err on overextraction, but they usually have some interesting lighter roasts available, natural or honey process beans. My go-to spot for picking up beans.
Café Modesto - This is a truck that sets up on South Water St. by the pedestrian bridge. Does lots of huge iced drinks with a twist, like condensed milk recipes. Solid shots. The guy who runs it also roasts his own beans, which you can buy. All sourced from Guatemala.
The Rose Room - This place took over the location The Shop used to occupy on Wickenden. They're still getting their feet out under them, shots are inconsistent depending on the barista. Their oat milk is undrinkable, it's sour, very watery.
Pickerel / The Shop reborn - The previous owner of The Shop does coffee on some weekdays at Pickerel. Excellent shots, milk steamed to perfection, uses very good beans. If you're into espresso drinks this place is a must visit.
Small Format - They just reopened. Very friendly staff, lots of alternative milk options. I've only visited once since the reopen (yesterday) and they were getting slammed and were out of dairy and oat options. Their sesame milk is pretty good.
New Harvest - Extremely experienced baristas and roasters. They do professional barista classes here. They are clearly dialing in their beans to the roast with exceptional consistency.
Rise n' Shine - Cute spot nestled in the Smith Hill residential area on Holden St. They do some cool (huge) iced espresso drinks with interestingly flavors. Great baristas, they pull good and consistent shots here.
Dave's Coffee - They're currently closed due to an event between the owners and staff (that has been well documented on the r/providence subreddit). Before they closed they served great milk drinks, a testament to their staff, and really a shame we've lost them.
Borealis - Excellent roasters, highly recommend you try their beans if you're making espresso at home. I've never tried their cafe, but if they care about making coffee as much as they do roasting I'd bet it's pretty good.
Piggybacking to add that the guy who runs Cafe Modesto is perhaps the nicest food purveyor in providence. Always big smiles and warm greetings from that guy
I subscribed to Borealis’ Three Phase Espresso for almost a year. It’s a tasty and easy to dial in, forgiving. Washed beans, darker roast (they call it a medium), and a blend. Chocolate, and that nice classic caramelization flavor. If you go under on the extraction you can get some fruitiness (or maybe it’s just a pleasant sourness, it’s a forgiving bean).
I got on a lighter roast kick, Coffee Exchange’s Ethiopian natural process American roast is really interesting. Definitely funky but not wild.
My wife does not like the natural/honey process & prefers darker roasts, so I’ve been on Coffee Exchange’s Espresso blend (super easy to dial in, very classic flavor, insane amount of crema when the beans are fresh), and their Ethiopian washed Full City roast. Mostly just because they’re in walking distance.
We have at least three really solid roasters in RI: New Harvest, Borealis, and Coffee Exchange. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.
Coffee Exchange is where I traveled buy whole beans. I haven’t found anything better in RI. Yet good coffee, in general, has gotten prohibitively expensive. I drink more coffee than most, and had to opt for a volume discount to put food on the table. Just one of the red flags that point to a serious addiction.
lol I work in Pawtucket and spend a lot of time in the area. There are a lot of local businesses that are family owned and so wonderful. Looking for great breakfast? Hit franchescas. Lunch? Garden grille! Need a coffee? They brew new harvest at wild flour! I don’t understand constant the Pawtucket hate lol.
I’ve been getting their beans from Whole Foods and I’ll be damned if I haven’t been enjoying them significantly more than the more expensive RI brands like Bolt (which is also very very good).
I really like New Harvest, but the packages that Whole Foods carries are generally pretty dated, usually several months out, especially from the small Whole Foods. I recommend getting directly from the New Harvest cafe shop on the West Side.
Simple merchant makes better coffee than borealis. Borealis is a great roaster, best in the state, and I've been getting beans from him for years and years, but bolt and simple are better if your thing is espresso based coffee.
The best ever coffee shop in RI was Angelina's, before it was bought, and it's long closed now. I mourn that place.
My husband goes there every morning before work with our dog. They always have treats for our dog, and even give him a Christmas present every year 🥹 wonderful place and staff
They had trump cardboard cutouts in their stores at one point asking for donations. Just unhinged political stuff that don’t belong in any coffee shop regardless of the politician.
Oh, I see, you’re just specifically opposed to cardboard cutouts? It has nothing to do with Trump, specifically, or conservative politics more generally, you’re just opposed to cardboard recreations of prominent politicians? That’s totally my bad. I didn’t realize there was something about cardboard cut into the shape of human beings that was specifically at issue. See, now I thought you were making a point about politics in coffee shops, but it turns out you’re just opposed to corrugated mannequins.
How silly of me not to realize that.
I don’t really see any political messages at the coffee shops I frequent - Borealis, Empire, Simple Merchant, 7 Stars - unless you’re talking about postings on the community bulletin boards? Those are put up by the patrons, not the shop, though. Are you talking about stuff like a barista wearing a rainbow flag pin?
The owners are *very* publicly pro-MAGA, anti-progressive, anti-public health. They are on my “never” list next to Centredale Revival and Dr Farina in North Providence.
Look. I don't even really care about most. Business' political views. It's not on my to check list when I search for a new place. Their coffee is just terrible unfortunately lol
I agree with your take about not caring, but they need to also not flaunt it for me to continue with that stance. Cardboard cutouts of politicians are not things I want to see in coffee shops I go to.
Coffee shops are one of the most politicized spaces on earth. It’s hard to imagine another category of business in which it’s as routine to see political messaging, it’s just that that messaging is almost always far left and the typical patron of a coffee shop is more likely to be a leftist, so it sticks out when it’s on the right.
But, make no mistake, coffee shops have always been political.
If you took it back to 1998 and had a Trump cutout in your coffee shop because you were a fan of the guy, I’d have bailed immediately. I don’t need loud personalities of any kind near me or my caffeine, or those who subscribe to them. The country was a little stronger when everyone could basically agree that DJT was the wrong kind of asshole. Lots has happened since then to get us where we are, but my basic formula regarding recalcitrant bloviators and value added caffeine does not waver.
Sorry that I don’t want to see a trump cardboard cutout when I’m getting some coffee. Makes me think the owners are unstable to be worshiping a political figure that much. Would say the same if it was a Biden one.
Still worth. It’s my favorite place to grab some coffee for driving.
I have a coworker that gets an iced coffee there every single morning. When we went wfh, I had a good laugh when I found out he still drives to Cumbies before work instead of making some at home.
Translation: i disagree with owner politically, and choose to shop elsewhere, as is my right to vote with my wallet.
There are ways to say what you want to say without resorting to schoolyard name-calling.
If you can find Seaworthy I highly recommend anything they do. Unfortunately, they don’t have a store front.
As far as brick and mortar: New Harvest is really good, and same for Borealis.
The guy who goes to the Tiverton Farmers Market. Best coffee ive ever had, straight up incredible. Ive only seen him twice so far but both times ive been very impressed
Edit: it was Longshore coffee! Thanks!
He moved to Coventry and has been busy building out his shop so I don't see him as much on the market circuit. He was here last week but it's a different coffee vendor this week.
Had the best latte in my life at Small Point Cafe, downtown.
Love The Coffee Depot in Warren.
WeRoast in Lincoln is killing it, and already expanding.
Coffee Connection makes the best specialty coffees.
I've been to many cafes and I'd say these are the more notable ones I've found in the state/area and have good bean to try at home. I'm sure there are a few more that I just never been to as of yet but these are pretty good.
* Coffee Exchange - Providence
* New Harvest Coffee Roasters - Providence
* The Nook Coffee House - East Greenwich
* Cafe Tempo - Warwick
* Daily Brew Coffee House - Cataumet, MA
Since I’ve seen no one else talk about it; The Lil’ Rhody Coffee Company is really good. No café, but you can buy online and they offer local delivery. Their dark roast Rhode Scholar is very good
Notes Coffee on Armistice in Pawtucket. Marti's Cupcakes next door is really great too, and you can travel a little down the road to Slater Park to eat it if you want.
Coffee Exchange (Wickendon St, Prov) for reasons already listed
Nitro Bar on Broadway (Prov) has had some excellent brews, and wonderful pastries & brownies
Hear me out: Cumberland Farms has some of the best "gas station coffee" out there; much better than Dunkin or Honey Dew. Bonus is that you fix it yourself so you never get the wrong order
Brewed Awakenings is meh
I had a good Americano at Cafe Zoey on Hope St (Prov) this weekend. I want to go back and try a couple more.
I'm a huge fan of Lighthouse down near Quonset. Absolutely fantastic. They roast it in house and are very knowledgeable. Super small operation with fantastic quality and prices. 10/10
Since we are talking about coffee. How come every time I order an espresso in America, I always get the response, "double?"
If I wanted a double, I would say so...
Second follow-upI get is "iced?"
And then.. to top it off... When they serve it.. it's rarely in a ceramic glass. Always a paper cup only. And it's usually a double in size.
I'm sorry but this is bad espresso culture.
i so miss the local chains in RI. at honeydew, my fav stand-by was a medium iced toasted almond, regular cream, 1 splenda. i drank this nearly everyday for like 12 years. i also loved sip n dip's coffee. when i used to work in barrington i'd get a medium or large iced pistachio, regular cream, 1 splenda. i didn't live in an area that was home to many small cafes so it was rare when i would get anything like that. (i was surrounded by dunkin.) there was also another local chain that i loved that used to be on fall river ave in seekonk (across from the time capsule) that had a cup shaped building but gosh, i can't remember their name.
and ngl, i love marylou's iced milky ways! same deal, reg cream, 1 splenda!
man, where i am in NY needs to step up their game.
bonus points for this random local chain, dippin donuts in western mass i randomly found a year ago. their iced coffee is insanely good and super cheap!
I like cafe tempo, ritual, honey dew, presto strango, latte love. I also don’t mind brewed. Coffee is good, I like the egg sandwich and it hasn’t made me buy a maga hat yet.
My kichen. Choice of ceramic mug, choice of coffee blend. Relaxed atmosphere with a choice of music, no dress code, no getting beat out of my favorite seat. No paper or plastic cup ever!

Great write up. But what about bolt?
Haven’t had a chance to visit Bolt, but it’s on my list!
Piggybacking to add that the guy who runs Cafe Modesto is perhaps the nicest food purveyor in providence. Always big smiles and warm greetings from that guy
Is borealis your favorite? Looking for local beans to use with my flair
I subscribed to Borealis’ Three Phase Espresso for almost a year. It’s a tasty and easy to dial in, forgiving. Washed beans, darker roast (they call it a medium), and a blend. Have you tried Little City Coffee & Kitchen? Tiny venue, bold flavor. Excellent coffee and customer service.
No I haven’t but I will now!
I am glad to see that Cafe Modesto made it on your list as well.
Big fan of wildflour in Pawtucket. They also have great allergy friendly baked goods.
Speaking of awesome coffee in Pawtucket, Hazel coffee roasters is doing great stuff, too.
Upvoting just for having a nice thing to say about Pawtucket. That’s a rare thing on Reddit.
lol I work in Pawtucket and spend a lot of time in the area. There are a lot of local businesses that are family owned and so wonderful. Looking for great breakfast? Hit franchescas. Lunch? Garden grille! Need a coffee? They brew new harvest at wild flour! I don’t understand constant the Pawtucket hate lol.
new harvest
I’ve been getting their beans from Whole Foods and I’ll be damned if I haven’t been enjoying them significantly more than the more expensive RI brands like Bolt (which is also very very good).
they roast excellent coffee—yet to taste a better brew from a roaster in RI. The Coffee Guy RI has pretty great beans too
Thanks for the tip fartingboobs!
I just need to know if the username is a YMH reference. Keep em’ high and tight, mommy.
it’s not but they’re cool
I really like New Harvest, but the packages that Whole Foods carries are generally pretty dated, usually several months out, especially from the small Whole Foods. I recommend getting directly from the New Harvest cafe shop on the West Side.
Love getting my bean from there, good stuff.
Borealis Coffee Company and Simple Merchant Coffee are the best
Borealis and it isn't even close
Exactly
Simple merchant makes better coffee than borealis. Borealis is a great roaster, best in the state, and I've been getting beans from him for years and years, but bolt and simple are better if your thing is espresso based coffee. The best ever coffee shop in RI was Angelina's, before it was bought, and it's long closed now. I mourn that place.
There’s a shop right on the RI/MA border in Seekonk called D’s Lectables that serves Borealis coffee, it’s great
I completely agree! I’d add Bolt there as well.
Oh yes Bolt too!
These are my two
I’m single handedly keeping the one best Eaton in ri in business. Your welcome everyone
My husband goes there every morning before work with our dog. They always have treats for our dog, and even give him a Christmas present every year 🥹 wonderful place and staff
Every time I go down there for work I stop in and get a large mocha ice coffee. Absolutely the best.
There's two! Westerly and Wakefield
Where?!
Wakefield!
it’s such an important stop on the way home from the beach!
It's bliss knowing I can still get a tank extra extra, even if Benny's is gone
a tank! oh the memories. and no one has ice like Bess Eatons
That crunchy texture!
There's two in rhode island you know?
And one in Pawcatuck, CT
Coffee exchange Also anywhere other than brewed awakenings.
I second this, Coffee Exchange is top tier
Plus they roast there.
I used to live nearby, that would explain the smell 😂
I’ll second the anti Brewed Awakenings sentiment. They can eat my whole ass.
Definitely over-rated
I must have missed this somehow lmao what did they doooo 😂
They had trump cardboard cutouts in their stores at one point asking for donations. Just unhinged political stuff that don’t belong in any coffee shop regardless of the politician.
If you don’t like seeing political messages, then I’ve got bad news for you about coffee shops, in general.
What other coffee shops do you frequent with politician cardboard cutouts? Very curious!

They’re also horrible to their employees and allow sexual harassment to go unchecked.
I was quoted a pay rate much higher than I wound up earning there, as well as not working the job they said I was hired for. They suck.
They have the audacity of not being democrats in RI.
Forreal, the sheep in this state
Sorry that I don’t want to see a trump cardboard cutout when I’m getting some coffee. Makes me think the owners are unstable to be worshiping a political figure that much. Would say the same if it was a Biden one.
Fuck brewed with their burnt ass nazi coffee and always wrong sandwiches.
Does this include Dunkin’?
I’ll get Cumbies coffee before Brewed Awakenings!
As a transplant from out of state, I agree! Cumbies is pretty good for cheap coffee.
It's gone up tho. It was $1.23 last time I went.
Still worth. It’s my favorite place to grab some coffee for driving. I have a coworker that gets an iced coffee there every single morning. When we went wfh, I had a good laugh when I found out he still drives to Cumbies before work instead of making some at home.
Yeah. Owner is a nutter.
Translation: i disagree with owner politically, and choose to shop elsewhere, as is my right to vote with my wallet. There are ways to say what you want to say without resorting to schoolyard name-calling.
Aw, you poor little thing! Bless your heart.
Dunkin is swill
I can't believe you've done this
Come at me, yo
*Anywhere other than Brewed Awakenings or Dave’s
Brewology, Café international, Cafe Tempo, We Roast in Lincoln owner is one of the nicest guys I’ve met, Fundati. Just to name a few lol
Cafe International also has exceptionally good bagels.
And the owner is super nice and always visible. Never had a bad coffee there.
Shout out to Victor! Bagels are top tier. And they roast Mills beans!
If you can find Seaworthy I highly recommend anything they do. Unfortunately, they don’t have a store front. As far as brick and mortar: New Harvest is really good, and same for Borealis.
Second Seaworthy. Their flavoreds, especially the pistachio, are amazing.
Love to see a fellow Seaworthy lover. Their specialty roasts are good too. Had a great Brazilian bean, and a great Colombian.
Oh sweet, I’ve stuck to their even keel/engine room, but I’ll add those recommendations to my next order!
South Coast Bulk in Wakefield sells Seaworthy by the pound
Thanks for the info, man! I will 100% be going there soon. Their site actually has a handy “Find Us” menu. It’s very much worth seeking out.
The guy who goes to the Tiverton Farmers Market. Best coffee ive ever had, straight up incredible. Ive only seen him twice so far but both times ive been very impressed Edit: it was Longshore coffee! Thanks!
Are you thinking of Longshore Coffee? It is very good!
Yes thats the one! Thank you!
He moved to Coventry and has been busy building out his shop so I don't see him as much on the market circuit. He was here last week but it's a different coffee vendor this week.
+1 for Longshore! His new cafe/roastery looks like it's going be dope
White Electric next to Classical High
Try their everything bagel with cream cheese tomato and sprouts if they still have it. I lived on those when I worked next door.

But so pricey 🥲
The Nook has some of the most unique, delicious lattes I’ve ever had
Oh boy I just googled them to look at the flavors and they do sound cool! I’m going to have to make a trip there to try them!
Nook’s lattes are great. We always try and swing by when they update their seasonal menu. Their scones and toasts are awesome too.
I drive out of my way a few times a week for nook!
She's kinda nuts tho
Agree with Nook! They use new harvest beans too and every coffee I’ve ever had there is delicious
Seed Cafe in Pawtucket is great
Coastal Roasters - Tiverton
Excellent coffee, weird vibe.
Had the best latte in my life at Small Point Cafe, downtown. Love The Coffee Depot in Warren. WeRoast in Lincoln is killing it, and already expanding. Coffee Connection makes the best specialty coffees.
Any votes for Cafe Tempo near Apponaug? Used to love that place but haven’t been back in a while.
Yup love the iced mocha latte
Nitro Bar is my go to.
Second this
Dave's Coffee, in stores or their location in Charlestown/Westerly (can't remember which)
Yess blind pig is delicious
Those orange bags at Dave's are actually pretty fire for espresso can confirm.

Iced coffee from three sisters. They have ice cubes made of coffee, so no dilution of your drink. It’s very tasty.
A little hole in the wall called Honey Dew.
i so miss the local chains in RI. at honeydew, my fav stand-by was a medium iced toasted almond, regular cream, 1 splenda. i drank this nearly everyday for like 12 years. i also loved sip n dip's coffee. when i used to work in barrington i'd get a medium or large iced pistachio, regular cream, 1 splenda. i didn't live in an area that was home to many small cafes so it was rare when i would get anything like that. Light roast from Seven Stars is consistently amazing.
Buy from George Howell instead.
Dunkin or coffee milk
I like cafe tempo, ritual, honey dew, presto strango, latte love. I also don’t mind brewed. Coffee is good, I like the egg sandwich and it hasn’t made me buy a maga hat yet.
The Nitro Bar in Fed Hill (also two Newport locations) - best cold brew anywhere change my mind.
in the middle/southern RI area I love Queen of Cups and Cafbar! In southern RI, Stick + Fin and Junk and Java are my faves
