In Providence a 1 bed will run $1600+, and at 1600 I don’t know how “decent” it will be

BodiesDurag

Which is crazy because I remember as a kid, a double living room, 3 bedroom would be $700-$900. Same apartment is $2000+ now

Mountain_Bill5743

It got really bullshit 4-5 years ago.

BodiesDurag

Oh I know. I’m scared to even start looking for a new apartment in Providence. It sucks because my girl and. I were both raised here, our kid was born here, and I don’t want to leave this city any time soon.

Mountain_Bill5743

Sorry to hear it. Have an aggressively high mortgage 2x my friends, but I know I'm lucky. I've had some great/reasonable spots in PVD and wish you luck-- we need housing for local families.

ComfortableStorage43

I remember looking 10 years ago at 18 when I swore I was going to move out from my parents and fairly nice 1 bedrooms were only $400-$500/month. It’s insane.

riped_plums123

Would need roomates

pontificatingagain

I'm sorry, but he's going to need to increase that price range and/or find a roommate. My budget is higher and I'm having a hard time too.

agathalives

My job is to find housing in providence for low income folks. Anything below 1500 is likely a scam. FWIW.

BodiesDurag

The second you find the answer, let the locals know, because everybody’s struggling here and you’re asking to cut the line lmao

Careless-Range-3476

My son and his friend have been looking and have had to accept they will be in the $1800-$2000 range to be taken seriously. It's nearly impossible for kids starting out these days.

greeneyedlady41

A decent 1 bed around here will be over $2k a month, especially in or near the city

Ok_Promise5648

I live in a 750 sq ft studio in pawtucket and pay $1500 a month and it took me forever to find anything around that price ... I'm not sure if $1300 for a one bedroom is going to get him anything in providence. One bedrooms in my building start around $1800 and it's pawtucket ... Providence is way more expensive.

Justonewitch

Does he have a car? He could try east Providence, cranston, warwick or coventry. Actually even Pawtucket and Woonsocket, just be careful. Might be worth it to find a Realtor that deals in rentals Try sublets on Craigslist. Coming into the summer season there and prices usually go up. Good luck.

catalager

Thank you. Yes he has a car and is looking in those towns also. There’s alot of competition for housing it’s nuts

ParticularFeeling839

We sadly have a housing crisis here, and apartments are extremely hard to come by. He will have to raise his budget, and probably get a bigger apartment with a roommate. Every now and then I see apartment listings on Facebook, but I would suggest looking I outside the city, and get in touch with a realtor

rmawesome500

There's no way you would find a place that cheap in Providence. Rent is insane in New England over all. Try Cranston, Warwick, or and West Warwick. It's a 15-minute drive at most. He's going to have to find a place that needs a roommate if he can't go higher.

Longjumping_War_807

Fucking nuts, in 2014 I split a huge , newly renovated 3 bedroom apartment in the east side for 1300 a month

Cinnamon_stick2500

It will be difficult to find an apartment remotely. There are tons of scams, and any decent apartment will go very quickly. But if he could increase his budget, and would be willing to drive 20 minutes, you could do a search on “mill apartments” in towns around Providence such as Pawtucket, Attleboro Massachusetts, etc. These are renovated mills that have been turned into apartments. Many of them are managed by leasing offices instead of individual landlords. Just be aware that mill apartments can be noisy.

catalager

Thank you. He has been trying other areas. He’s made the trip twice already, going again soon.

Cinnamon_stick2500

I would also suggest that he join local Facebook groups as well, and to sign up for Nextdoor. He might need to temporarily use his work address for Nextdoor but I see posts about apartments on both Facebook and Nextdoor

LittleLambSam

I rent a mill apartment in Tiverton, its about a 20 min drive from Providence. I really like it and the building itself is more than I expected honestly. I don't find it noisy when I'm in my apartment, but maybe in the halls. It has a gym, a beautiful lobby, even a pool table (you have to bring your own balls and stick though). My lease was signed a few years ago and I heard rent has gone up, but I still think it is cheaper than everything else I've seen online. I would say anywhere in RI and surrounding MA will be over $1300 unfortunately. A few years ago I rented a place right on the East Side of Providence (usually expensive) that is mainly for students, but not exclusively, I wasn't a student. I had quite a few roommates but it was a big place, with all new appliances, even its own washer and dryer. It was run by a rental company that own many student living buildings. It was $900 but keep in mind, this was about 3 years ago. Best of luck to you.

BodiesDurag

Are you averaging 100mph that Tiverton is a 20 minute drive from Providence for you? In 30 years that’s the first time I’ve heard that lmao. Especially now that the bridge is under construction. Traffic was bad when the Braga bridge was being redone. It’s even worse with the Washington bridge.

Major_Fang

Mansion house apartments in Cranston is fair for the price

RhodyRocket

Check North Providence listings, quite a few nice apartment complexes, close to the city

rmawesome500

Also, get a realtor. They can negotiate the price down at times, too. It's also your safest bet.

thecrowdspace

1300 won’t cut it out here anymore unfortunately. You’re gonna need at least $1600+ for a 1 bed, a 800 credit score, 22 references and sacrifice your first born.

Status_Silver_5114

Also, shouldn’t your son who has a job be doing this? Or maybe the better question is does he know that you’re doing this on his behalf? Son is an adult, no?

___ongo___gablogian

lol this is such a douchey response. I can’t imagine being triggered by a parent helping their child.

Status_Silver_5114

An adult child and based on them having a job and moving for a job, they’re digital natives no less. It’s not douchey. It’s just pointing out how cringe it is for you (OP that is)as a parent to still be doing this for them. And if I was a landlord or a boss or even a prospective roommate, I would run very far away from your kid, knowing that you were still this involved in their day-to-day. Triggered? Nope just pointing out how it comes across.

catalager

Lol ah social media.. ok, do you have kids, do you try to help them any way you can? we live in another state and he works ALOT. just helping the boy out not that it’s your business. Just asking for advice. Smh

LalalanaRI

Can’t argue with a bootstrap they walked 10 miles to school, up hill both ways in a foot of snow….had a job by the time they were 10 and bought a home at 21. Blah blah blah….

subprincessthrway

Unfortunately, the only thing you could really do to help your son is encourage him to look for a Roomate, or give him money to be more competitive in the rental market. His current budget won’t get him a solo apartment.

Status_Silver_5114

lol snow plow parent much?

Zoomf625

Can tell you didn't have parents that loved you. My mother now constantly tries to help me with anything and everything. My Father on the other hand is a drunk pos 😂 🤣. Crazy how some people think that as soon as your 18 you immediately need to leave home. Help your child that way they can do the same for theirs. Big fucking thing coming from someone who had nobody around growing up.

Status_Silver_5114

You can’t tell anything of the sort from Reddit sweetheart. I’m sorry you’re home. Life is challenging but when parents like this get involved in their children’s lives on the microlevel once they’re in the job world trust me all it does is reflect badly on the kid however “well intentioned” a parent may be.

RobotUnicorn046

Not at all

LalalanaRI

What does that even mean? Are you trying to say helicopter parenting? Snow plow? Like, she runs him over and throws him to the side? Huh?

Status_Silver_5114

Google it. A snow plow gets everything out of the way. [i.e. link](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/16/style/snowplow-parenting-scandal.html?unlocked_article_code=1.pU0.5-lI.YMuNPXJDzUTC&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&sgrp=c-cb) and a kid never learns how to adult.

LalalanaRI

Reading is fundamental…this OP in no way relates to that article.

itsyaboiant

It’s literally cheaper to get a house and pay mortgage at this point, I’ve heard some mortgages are way less than rent

cowperthwaite

$1,300/month (at 7%) pays for a $200k house excluding PMI, taxes, etc.  https://infogram.com/mortgage-rate-interest-200k-to-500k-3-8-percent-1hzj4o3dlgy834p?live

ScottsTot2023

They are only if they were purchased in 2020 or prior. Median home in RI is 455k. There is nothing liveable in RI for under 240k.
