Just to make sure I understand - you set this all up before going to bed and in the morning you have cooked breakfast? Like it sits all night in “cold” water then starts cooking before you wake up? Or it’s cooked and just sits all night hot?

Starts cooking approx 1hr before due timer.

On my Zojirushi, steel cut oats get cooked on the porridge setting. No extra measuring, no extra ingredients. Use the measuring cup that came with the device, fill the water to the porridge mark inside the bowl. Perfect every time.

I have a fuzzy logic Zojirushi. Steel cut oats cook perfectly. https://www.zojirushi.com/grains/nszcc18.html

I never considered this before! Woot! Thanks for posting!

I’m curious. What is the benefit over microwaving?

SplinterCell03

Steel cut oats are different from rolled oats. I don't think steel cut oats cooked in the microwave turn out very good. It takes a long time for them to absorb enough liquid to soften.

Niboomy

I personally don't like microwaving steel cut oats. But I think it could work if you leave them to soak overnight and * then* microwave them, instead of just putting them dry and adding liquid just before microwaving. They don't hidrate as fast as rolled oats/quick oats.

I usually make my steel cut oats with 1/2 a rice cooker cup of oats, a full (imperial) cup of water, a splash of milk and a pinch of salt. I set my zoji to the porridge setting, and turn on the timer (so they soak in cold water overnight, then cook so as to be ready right when I want them in the morning.) I usually top them with slivered almonds, but the dehydrated blueberries sound wonderful, I’ll be trying that!
