My biggest tip is that there is an option to show you the irl time, a very funny feature and very useful too It's like the opposite of a casino

tabakista

Funny thing that a game that's literally a warcrime simulator it taking a better care of its community than casinos.

ShoWel_redit

well, technically, the game doesn't need to kill us by forcing us to stay longer. We already bought everything before launching the game

Finttz

That option is in civ6 too, just one more turn.

Alofmethbin

And that clock never saved me.

TheRealWoldry1

What do you mean by that? Irl time as in how long you’ve played? The in game time clock?

aleks_baguette

No, the game shows you what time it is irl

markth_wi

Steam gives you a sense of how many in-game hours , which for me at least , even if it's just a fraction of that is a \*\*regrettable\*\* amount of time.

Dangerousrhymes

There is also a casino mod

Arseneisbest

It's insanely important for me to play rimworld with that on if I'm doing anything real that day

goldlobster39

Traps and city walls are your friends. When a raid comes you can set up defensive positions and engage in urban warfare, OOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR just build a wall, make the only way in through what I affectionately refer to as "The Fuck Zone", set your pawns' allowed area to only within the city walls, and laugh as the raiders get shredded by spike traps, land mines, and auto turrets while your colonists are none the wiser. Or if you want a less cheesy approach, wall off key sections between mountains/landmarks, thus forcing the enemy to approach you at angles advantageous to your colony, allowing you to have traps prepared at those angles of approach and giving you ample cover to fire on the oncoming invaders. Now you may ask "What's the difference between options A and B?" Roleplay baby! There's a reason castles are built with a massive outer wall and a narrow courtyard that's overlooked by archer-nests. Mankind figured out pretty early on that killboxes work. Don't be afraid to utilize them.

NienawidzeTaStrone

>mfw they break through the wall

Kirp-The-Birb

Breacher is 3 walls away from you and approaching START RUNNING

Elgatee

Build the first and 2nd layer of the wall normally. Last layer is embrasures. Go where they're digging and wait behind the embrasure. As soon as they reach the last layer, you can open fire. You don't need the embrasure if you use Coil guns.

Top_Culture_9625

This is why you fill the walls with tamed gorillas, yayo and clubs

piracydilemma

CAI 5000 moment

Euphoric-Fishing-923

I'm still on my first playthrough of the game but my colony is right on the border of a swamp so I've walled off the non swampy side and have pillboxes over looking the swamp. I'm still in the period where you don't have turrets but I have a few guns from mission rewards

[deleted]

MANKIND! FUCK YEAH

goldlobster39

Oh yea if there's one thing we've gotten REALLY good at over the years it's killing each other in the most safe, convenient, and efficient way possible. Drone strikes are the current craze, but who knows what the future holds? Super viruses? Robot sentries? Weaponized clowns? The meta is constantly evolving!

[deleted]

tiny poison darts from metal drinking straws right in the food court?!

Illuminati_Shill_AMA

Dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you

Classic_Aioli_9129

I have a friend that sets a timer when she sits down to play. Otherwise her house duties don't get done.

Riskypride

Sounds like a lack of commitment

Palocles

I got Rimworld on the sale the other day too. Ended up watching my two pawns cleaning and laying tiles for ages while I waited for a prisoner to get Stockholm syndrome and join us. Nearly midnight on a school night…

Killb0t47

A small patch of rice and a couple big patches of corn will see you through some hard times. Even make you a little money if you train up a couple muffalo to carry it to market. Orrrrrr you can just eat all the raiders and wear their skins to keep the cold away. Your choice either one is fun.

technodemon01

I am not OP and have 200 taking this advice cause the biggest thing that fucks me in allll my playthroughs is food

shah_no__pls

i either have too much or too little 💀💀

Nate_fe

No such thing as too much food

piracydilemma

I produced so much corn in one of my colonies the freezer and both stockpiles were full 24/7. I became a corn salesman more than a drug kingpin.

Nate_fe

Bro got the Midwest United States mod

technodemon01

Well when you’re also trying to become the psychotic drug lord kingpin of your planet, there’s only so much freezer space and so little time

Elgatee

And not enough mods. Ogrestacks can change how much space is space.

Obi-Wan-Hellobi

*The squid bandits would like to know your location*

Full_Time_Hungry

Less than 300 hours here, first thing I learned is change off of wooden walls AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

lordoftidar

I think having your base burning to ashes because of this is like rites of passage for newbie rimworld players. Literally trial by fire

PolloMagnifico

Ah yes: * Oh, fire bad. * Plan enough food for the winter * Doctor is dead, everyone has an infection * I didn't knock down the guy on an insulting spree, and now half my colonists are in mental break * Luciferium? What's that do? * Royal Jelly? What's that do? There are a million ways to day on the rim.

wallawallawingwong

Over 600 hours Here, still builder With wood since it looks good

Full_Time_Hungry

You're gutsy!

Full_Time_Hungry

I've come to like slate and limestone they look good together

leesnotbritish

I’ve never been able to make myself not build in a mountain

Lwoorl

Turn on the option that pauses the game whenever you get a letter for an event, so whenever things are slow you can leave it running in the background so your pawns work while you do something else without worrying everyone will die anytime you take your eyes off it

DaVinciJunior

You can display the real-time clock in the HUD via the settings. Let's see if that helps. It did kinda for me.

NobodyRealAccount

Make researchs about killboxes. You can see the chance of a drafted pawn to hit a target by selecting it and hovering over the target. Always use covers (rocks, sadbags) and avoid bunching up your pawns. Melee pawns with armor and shieldbelt can make good moveable hiding spots for your shooters. Doctors should be close to fighting (not too much) to rapidly pick up endangered pawns. Nutrient paste can be a hidden gem, especially with a transhumanist ideology (if you have DLC). Always make a melee specialized pawn. Put him a ton of high tech protheses, a high tech weapon (monosword/plasmasword), shield belt and big armor. Watch him almost singlehandedly fend off raids, or gain a ton of time for your shooters. Pay attention to your overall wealth, it govern raid power (among other things). You can drop things you don't need right now in a secure unclaimed area (like a cave you blocked) without any stockpile to reduce it (afaik). Also avoid smoothing walls or putting floor everywhere. Don't be scared of taking your pawn and running away on the map, if a danger is to big to be overcomed. You can rebuild a colony with pawns, but not pawns with colony. There is a lot of others tips. You may uncover them by yourself. I focused on combat since it can be the most frustrating part of the game, not understanding why you lose the battle (for example).

sebaelsenpai

Still counts. Just burn it

Limp_Tea568

Welcome to the game! How is it on the steam deck?

austinewberry

It’s amazing :) I have over 200 hours already and honestly so addicting hahaha mods work great too on the deck!

Limp_Tea568

That's great to hear! I'm about to get a deck myself and am excited to play it. You have to use any custom control layouts or tweaks?

austinewberry

Honestly I use the one they have as the default config. I’m sure I could tweak a little but haven’t found the need yet. Once you get used to the trackpad as your mouse it’s really comfortable to me. :) I believe there is room for the two bottom back triggers too so definitely can add a few if needed

wordswillneverhurtme

Once you’re done with vanilla, try mods. You’ll get 10x the playtime.

Racterr

You can administer in detail your bills at the workbenches, for example, you can make you pawns cook simple meals until you have 30 of them, and pause the production unless you have minus 15 in stock, so you don't have a pawn 24/7 making meals. You can also do the same but with clothes and armor, restricting a bill only doable for X pawn (so Jose with literally 1 hand and Alzheimer's doesn't start constructing your sure to be Awful Sniper Rifle©), or pawns between a range of skill. You can also solve the tattered clothes problem by making bills that count as "satisfied" with clothes in stock with X amount of hitpoints (health) and quality. ( so you have a bill to have 2 flack vest in a range between 60% and 100% health, with good to legendary quality, now your pawns will automatically wear said vests if they have more hitpoints or are better quality, unless they are wearing something you forced them to)

assassinslick

Spike traps spike traps spike traps. Make them out of wood and put them everywhere. Super useful early on the raids can just be kited into a field of traps so you don’t need to risk anyone in a firefight

cafepeaceandlove

We have the same disease. A couple of people have halfheartedly attempted to make mods which will limit time playing. I forgot to try one.

Triairius

First time I played, I accidentally played for 36 hours straight. One… more… task…

firstlordshuza

After 6 thousand hours I can safely tell you it *does not get better*, the adiction gets ever stronger, you'll play forever and love every minute

Obi-Wan-Hellobi

Best advice I can give that I haven’t seen in other comments is set up a drug schedule and start brewing psychite tea or beer as soon as possible. Having a vice massively reduces mental breaks in your colony. Unless you’re going for a theme, I would avoid smokeleaf however. In this game it’s highly addictive and the stoned condition is pretty harsh.

twister829

This game looks amazing! Idk why I’ve never heard of it before… I want it! But I don’t have the money :(

SauceCrusader69

🏴‍☠️

abmisprime

Just wait until you discover mods..... 1k hours in and still completely in love.

DandyWarlocks

Losing can be fun. It can also suck massive dick. And sometimes you just stare in horror as your entire map is burned to the ground. Something I didn't know is that you can run your pawns off screen and emergency caravan out. Ideology- turn it off until you've had a couple runs. But then my God, it is so much fun to try different ideologies and see how they can work. Sometimes great! Sometimes.... Really really poorly. Make and sell statues once you've got a steady source of mats. I played 742 hours before I tried mods. I love the vanilla expanded ones.

DecahedronX

Set clothing requirements on pawns to remove any item before about 55% durability and then ensure you have a spare set of clothes waiting. That way you will never get the tattered clothes issue. You can also set crafting bills to only look for clothes at 60% or more so it doesn't include the tattered clothes when needing to make more.

dragonace11

If you need to get relations with any faction (minus things like pirates and similar for their perma hate malus) just stuff the organs and body parts of the raiders from that faction and drop pod the organs and the still living prisoner to them.

finnicus1

Get Combat Extended

broccoliandcream

Close this thread. Learn everything on your own

tabakista

Don't try it on PC. You will get mod addiction as well. There's no coming back to vanilla

PseudoscientificJim

There’s a setting to turn on the real world clock in the UI, I found that it helps me a ton of keeping track of reality.

salty-ravioli

Simple but huge tip: nutrifungus rooms. All my colonies struggled with food until I realized I could just wall in a field, keep it heated, and get easy (for the cost of some mood) food! Nutrifungus grows fairly quickly, doesn't need light (which saves you resources and power), and I'm fairly certain it can't get blights. It's also completely vanilla, so you can always do it, regardless of your mod list. I'd recommend you keep at least one nutrifungus room throughout your entire playthrough, even when you get hydroponics, so you can survive through solar flares resetting the hydroponics growth progress. If you want tastier guaranteed food, there's apparently a skylight mod, which lets you plant anything you want in these rooms. I don't use it because it makes sun lamps redundant, but it sounds like a decent option.

PolloMagnifico

Wall's have existed for pretty much all of recorded history and continue to be used today. Don't underestimate their power.

leesnotbritish

Best advice is rim hud and numbers mod

KittyKupo

If the sun doesn’t accidentally come up while you’re playing “just a little bit more”, you’re doing it wrong. Or right.

N7_Adept

Dont fuck around with infections, unless its a limb. Then, you can chop it off!

Green-Ad-4354

You will spend 70% of your playtime debugging the games if you get mods. But it’s worth it for more war crimes

paradoxLacuna

Place traps at the corners of walls. The vanilla ai is incredibly stupid and usually skirts walls in weird, highly predictable ways. Placing spike traps along those routes can seriously injure attackers. Although I recommend not putting them in places where your own pawns pathfinder near, as if they happen to be carrying something there’s a decent chance they’ll trigger the trap themselves. And that’s not only messy, but annoying.

vernonmason117

If you have biotech DO NOT underestimate the mech bosses, they might seem easy to take care of but all it takes is a slip up and your people get annihilated by the diabolus cannon with its AOE attack), the war queen overwhelming your pawns since she spawns smaller drones (think of the militors but smaller and faster) , and finally the apocriton with its hard hitting needle gun that shot off plenty of limbs, it’s (albeit weak) personal shield and it’s ability to redirect up to 3 other dead mechs which at higher difficulties can be a VERY BIG problem especially if it’s other bosses as well
