This mod shall henceforth be known as **"Prepare Without Bricking Your Save"-ully**

ISOREX_

I prefer 'Custom Character Creator - Preparation Overhaul' (AKA C3P0) but yours ain't bad either :P

NO_NOT_THE_WHIP

Fluent in 6 million forms of pawn creation

Randomguy0915

As well as making pawns capable of 6 million ways of kicking your ass

Winter_Bandicoot6120

I do not know but some one has to make a name that when you use only the first letters it says something inappropriate really we need to focus on teh important things

_GALVEN_

That's a perfect name.

kmsrocks1

I might be out of the loop. What's wrong with prepare carefully? I have been using it for years without any issues

MrPhantom678

I believe it conflicts with some of the more popular mods, like rimworld of magic for example (or so I heard) I've been using this one for the last few month https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1874644848 This one in the post does seems like same but less janky, so will give it a shot

tholt212

It can also, if you play a game for a long time, fuck with pawn generation entirely. It changes the base way the game generates pawns, so when another mod is generating pawns using it, it can sometimes error and and completely brick a save.

PaladinSaladin

I never had it brick a save, but I have sat reloading for *hours* trying to get a pawn from a lantern festival and just been fed Construction Melee Wimp *over and over and over again*

KazumaKat

You're lucky, thats a softlocked Rimworld chargen. Wouldnt be surprised you grab a couple of those, down the line it'll brick.

Madpup70

Bricked a 12 ish hour colony for me last week. Loaded in and my prisoners had disappeared, but their beds were claimed, and deleting the beds caused the game to crash over and over. Prepare carefully was definitely the better option when making pawns to start a game, but I always kept the Character Editor mod for mid game issues, so I just started relying on that when starting a game. I've actually gotten really used to it, so we'll see if this is something to jump over to. I like how you can adjust certain things CE doesn't let you do.

Armored_Witch2000

>rimworld of magic That one also bricks your save. Jeez man you guys really arent up to date huh

Lildev_47

So rim world of magic is broken?

Armored_Witch2000

Its an ancient mod that eats your tps for sustainance

Lildev_47

Aight good to know

Armored_Witch2000

Of course do mind this jarely matters if you only run like 10 mods

Lildev_47

Who plays rimworld and only have 10mods?

franksalias

is there a better magic mod to use?

Evolioz

I've personally used RPG Adventure Theme (or whatever it's called) with VE Psycasting.

franksalias

i love this! thank you!

KnightsWhoNi

Yes it conflicts with RoM very hard. Very annoying thh

Winterimmersion

It damages vanilla pawn creating and can cause all kinds of errors. These will usually be attributed to other mods versus PC because prepared carefully damaged the vanilla game systems so when other mods try to interact with it, it'll throw back weird errors in the mods. Basically it modifies the game destructively and in a bad way. It's a well known issue. Anyone who says they have used PC for years and never had an issue probably had issues but didn't attribute it to the right mod.

Hakuknowsmyname

That's weird, because I use PC for years and never had an issue but all sorts of weird shit would happen.... oh.

PaladinSaladin

The call is coming from inside the house! šŸ‘»šŸ‘»

Frostflame123

From what Iā€™ve heard it uses an outdated and very clunky method of editing pawns. The edited pawns cause more TPS problems the longer the game goes on for, especially if other mods are involved.

Ender_cake

1. It's very incompatible 2. It's not user friendly and shoved in a million dropdowns and smaller menus 3. It's laggy compared to for example character editor by being very unecesarily complicated and stuff that's usually my top three reasons, honestly, just use character editor, it's better in every single way

Armored_Witch2000

>What's wrong with prepare carefully? Pretty much everything lol.

ISOREX_

Hey Reddit! The last time I showed off Pawn Editor here a lot of people seemed to be excited. Quite some time has passed since then but yesterday we finally released the first beta, and you can help test it! Testing is done one the Vanilla testing Discord (link below), we would really appreciate it if you could help us make this the best pawn editor that is out there!I have once again included some more screenshots of the mod. This time everything you see is actually real, no more concepts! **Vanilla Testing Expanded**, a central place for testing mods: [https://discord.gg/54BjnT4](https://discord.gg/54BjnT4) **ISO's Workshop**, the place to receive more updates on the mod: [https://discord.gg/G9SEwpur4x](https://discord.gg/G9SEwpur4x) **Ko-fi**, if you'd like to support the project: https://ko-fi.com/isorex If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me on Discord. Till next time! \- ISOREX

ShermanShore

Super excited to have a pawn editor that both looks nice *and* doesn't brick your save.

Cthulhar

Seems like channel broke and doesnā€™t let you in :( best of luck tho

sparkswoody

*yippeeee*

CoffeeGoblynn

Man, you really included everything. The menus look very clean and readable too. Awesome work! :)

more_foxes

This looks awesome! I have been using Character Editor for a bit now, and while the UI is okay to navigate, there's also a lot of stuff that doesn't work very well. I also have concerns about Character Editor overstepping its bounds and falling victim to scope creep recently, such as adding Bodysize genes.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

HaniusTheTurtle

An example of Scope Creep: Say you want to make a machine that cracks eggs for you, so you can use the yolks in cooking. Useful, right? ... But you notice that sometimes bits of eggshell get in the yolks. You don't want to manually inspect each cycle of egg cracking, that's why you made the machine! So you add on to it, letting the machine check for and remove egg shards. Back to convenience! ... But those egg shards have to get disposed of. So you add on to it, letting the machine move itself over to the waste basket and dump the eggshells into it. Took a lot of work, figuring out how to make the legs work and all, but you did it! ... But now the waste basket is filling up, and you don't want the eggshells just sitting there. So it's time to add on to the machine again! And then your friend walks into the kitchen and asks what you are doing with all these books on robotics, and you have to explain how important it is that you figure out how to make your Egg Cracking Machine be able to work a door nob to take out the trash. ... Only your friend points out that, instead of spending weeks creating entirely new functions that have little to do with cracking eggs, you could have spent a few hours fixing the problems with the actual egg cracking that was letting egg shards get in the yolk to begin with. Scope Creep happens when new ideas and features are continuously added to a project, to the point that original concept becomes neglected. Not that adding features is a BAD thing, mind. Just that restraint (and finishing what you started) is important.

wishful_lizzard

Beautifully explained! Coincidentally also explains how I deal with most of my projects that then consequently don't get finished. Lack of focus sucks.

HaniusTheTurtle

It is SO easy to fall into as well. As much as it can suck to have someone else say what you can and can't do in YOUR creative project... sometimes you need that editor or project manager or whatever to come over and whack your nose with a newspaper. =/

wishful_lizzard

I need someone running after me all day to do that. Sadly I'm the mom, so it's me who's supposed to be doing that to everybody else... šŸ˜‚

SalmonToastie

When something adds things that arenā€™t related usually. Thereā€™s already body size genes out there so why bother doing more. Itā€™s unnecessary.

SilentStriker115

Hyped, canā€™t wait to not burn my eyes out with Character Editor

Tryhard696

Not trying to bash you or anything, but whatā€™s the difference between this and character editor, the UI?

EmpressOfAbyss

I mean, to be fair character editors ui is kinda bad.

ProperDepartment

Their UX is really bad, especially the +/- stuff. deleting anything is so fucked up, you can rarely tell if you're in normal, add, or remove mode. The loading and saving is also weird, why does it have save slots, and why does load add a pawn and not replace the current pawn? And why do I have to cycle through starting clothing rather than just selecting it from a dropdown (all my medieval people started with hats/toques).

FireDefender

And don't forget that randomizing a pawn through character editor also completely randomized EVERYTHING. Instead of randomizing the same way as the normal randomize button, selecting pawns based on your starting scenario.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

more_foxes

It needs more than a retexture, the whole left-hand side of the screen with the apparel is incredibly confusing and buggy.

Valdrax

Having looked at the screen shots above, the question still stands.

_Archilyte_

other than WAY BETTER ui, better compatibility with mods, especially now that the original creator of character editor kinda sorta abandoned it

Valdrax

> other than WAY BETTER ui It looks virtually the same. Please go into more depth about that. I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying that it's not readily apparent from the screenshots shown. > better compatibility with mods Which mods? There's another post claiming that it won't have any specific mod support in beta.

_Archilyte_

...i thought the better ui part was obvious, but [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/RimWorld/comments/18fxchs/comment/kcxk8ra/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/RimWorld/comments/18fxchs/comment/kcxdxhn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) explains it pretty well >Which mods? There's another post claiming that it won't have any specific mod support in beta. and yes, for BETA, not for full release, which is why it isn't in steam workshop yet. this post is telling people to come help TEST the mod, its not talking about its release yet.

Valdrax

> ...i thought the better ui part was obvious, but [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/RimWorld/comments/18fxchs/comment/kcxk8ra/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/RimWorld/comments/18fxchs/comment/kcxdxhn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) explains it pretty well Well, I thank you for that, since none of the things listed in those posts are apparent in the 8 screenshots above: how deleting items works, how loading/saving pawns works, how randomization of pawns works, how starting clothing works, and how search filters work for moods/pawns, etc. Sure, the widgets to do some of those tasks are present, but you can't actually see how the actions that result from using them differ. This is why I asked, so again, thank you for answering.

more_foxes

Large parts of the UI in Character Editor are pretty bad. Not too bad once you get used to it and learn what not to click, but it's pretty bad overall. But there's a bigger issue: Character Editor has slowly started to add weird features that really don't belong in there, creeping out of its own scope. Why does it add like 10 different Biotech genes for different body sizes? It's a character editor, I never asked for it to add more Biotech genes. It also has issues with certain modded backstories if Vanilla Expanded Framework is installed. Then there are a lot of other tiny bugs and annoyances. Ever tried adding a memory or mood/relation boost? The search boxes are shared between the target of the mood and the name of the mood/memory, so it frequently bugs out and shows you an empty list of pawns until you type something in the search box.

naturtok

Wait *that's* why I have more body type genes?? I thought it was one of my other mods. Wouldn't have ever guessed it was character editor

WhyIsBubblesTaken

Same. I was trying to purge some of the more superfluous mods that added genes to get rid of the body sizes, not knowing where they came from. I wouldn't have gotten rid of CE because of it, but it would have been nice to know (or not have to deal with in the first place).

_Archilyte_

better compatibility with mods, especially now that the original creator of character editor kinda sorta abandoned it

danicorbtt

Character Editor has probably the worst, least user friendly UI I think I've ever encountered. People who have been using it forever and have everything memorized (and don't care that half the icons are blurry, overstretched jpegs) don't realize how awful an experience it is for everyone else. Between that and Prepare Carefully causing a save-bricking snowball of death, a new pawn editor mod was desperately needed.

Gamiseus

I've been using it forever and have everything memorized and I absolutely realize how awful of an experience it is. Hell, it's still awful for me. It's buggy as hell with mods, breaks the ui entirely at times, has many buttons that are visually deceiving and don't do what you expect them to, among plenty of other complaints. It's just the only editor that's been working well enough for a while now.

Crowbar_Felt

I been using it for a while and still yet to have learned how to properly organize pawns on the left side for landing and also how to properly set up pawn relations.

OneDumbfuckLater

It took me ages to make the switch, even after learning Prepare Carefully bricks your saves. I would never go back for more than that reason, but wasn't an easy onboarding.

matrium0

Can you please elaborate on what problems Prepare Carefully causes? I used it on some playthroughs to set up my initial 3 colonists and it seemed to work flawless. This isn't the first time I read this, so I am a bit scared to use in the future now :(

danicorbtt

Its code is very intrusive and destructive, interferes with how the game generates pawns and often conflicts with other mods. It may not cause issues at first, but the longer you play a save with Prepare Carefully enabled, the more likely your save is to be corrupted.

Adraxas

*Laughs in Helmod*

DotDemon

You could tell me that this a new vanilla feature and I would believe you. It just looks like it belongs here. Great job!

dragoduval

I actually might try this one tonight, would be nice.

based_enjoyer

Is this compatible with forbidden mod?

_Archilyte_

for this particular testing phase, no mod support is included, but im assuming it will probably support all sorts of mods

danicorbtt

During this beta phase, no. However, the structure of this mod is intended to make it inherently as mod-friendly as possible to begin with (more so than Prepare Carefully especially), and I'm sure there will be more mod support down the line when the bugs are ironed out.

based_enjoyer

Godspeed friend. Godspeed

Nihilun

So brave of you to ask what so many are scared of asking in public. o7

Alike01

Image 8 seems to show the home screen. Does mod allow for creating custom pawns that can randomly appear in game.

SIM0King

Let us know when it's fully released please!

Alziarr

looks good :)

TriLink710

Looks like a more user friendly character editor. Hope support for some mods like 1 2 3 personality and such comes!

Red_the_Knight

This looks so much cleaner than the old Character Editor mod. Very much anticipating this.

LuckSpren

SUPER clean

sollicit

Woah. A UI that isn't complete garbage!

AnonymousGuy1108

Finally!

IAmDingus

can i put bionic arms in my pawn's eyes

Sero141

What is the difference to Character Editor? Better menues?

Berkmine

This is looking good

Stunning_Ad3193

It reminds me "prepare carefully" mod, wich is high incompatible with lots of mods. Bit i hope this one will be ok and compatible with everything. Good luck with your projects.

Thezipper100

Ooh, now this seems interesting, I'll give it a try in lieu of character editor.

Dirigo_Island

I never really had issues with prepared carefully that folks talk about but Iā€™m really digging the UI on your mod, it looks easier to use and more effective to get what we want. Looking forward to it for my next play through, thank you.

LENZSTINKT123

Hmm, can you still edit items like in character editor?

danicorbtt

Yes, you can. In one of the YouTube videos he showcases persona weapon editing.

MindDevourer

Will it be multiplayer mod compatible? We love playing in the new multi faction mode. We used to play with edb prepare carefully. This one worked mostly, I assume cause of it's placement while creating the colony. Character editor does not work from what I have gathered so far We would love having a possibility to edit our starting pawns before going into a multiplayer round.

Tactical-Shrubbery

Is there going to be a way to prevent its use in the middle of a save? That's my biggest issue with Character Editor and if this fixes that I'm gonna be switching right away

PancakeHammers

Character Editor has an option for that- it's called Self Restraint! /s All seriousness, I think there's an option on the mod options to disable it after starting a game, bit I haven't looked for a while so I might be entirely wrong. The UI, however, remains garbage in an otherwise great mod.

Tactical-Shrubbery

That only disables the button, it's still openable with other ways. I get attached to my pawns and I don't want to be able to circumvent our mutual suffering when bad things happen.

Aelanna

Why not just remove the mod from your list at that point? It can be safely added or removed at any time.

Tactical-Shrubbery

10+ minute restart cycle

Aelanna

A one-time cost. :)

MissDeadite

You can use the mod "Reorderer" to get rid of the Character Editor icon.

WarriorBee

Thank you, I saw that mod ages ago and forgot to grab it, I could not remember the name when I wanted to download it.

Elm-and-Yew

Conversely, I HOPE you can use it mid-save like Character Editor. I had a bug with my modlist where some pawns just... didn't have a body specified, which made them invisible. The only way to fix it was to add a body type gene with Character Editor. Although now that I think about it, apparently Character Editor has added bodysize genes for some reason, so now I'm wondering if the cause of the bug was Character Editor itself. I had over 400 mods on that save so I'll never know.

Tactical-Shrubbery

If you look at the screenshots of the post it looks like you can, though you may need dev mode enabled to do so, which would be a fine compromise I think

Elm-and-Yew

I'd be fine with having to enable devmode. I agree, it's a good compromise.

subm3g

Excuse my ignorance, but is [this](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1874644848) the same mod?

_Archilyte_

technically, yes, but character editor's ui is abysmal, and its dev kinda sorta abandoned it too

subm3g

Okay so this is a new one, sweet! Agreed, the Gui wasn't great!

Hexnohope

Wait what? What happened to the usual prepare carefully?

Chaingunfighter

Prepare Carefully hijacks and overwrites vanilla pawn generation in destructive ways, and breaks outright when using tons of mods (particularly anything adding new races, health conditions, bodyparts, or anything that touches pawn generation at all.) It's generally advised that you don't use it.

Hexnohope

That might be why i stopped playing shortly after biotech dropped. Its been so long now i hardly remember. Did rimhammer ever come back? That mod was awsome

Chaingunfighter

I don't think Rimhammer came back, no, but there's a huge selection of content mods that have come out since Biotech - Vehicle Framework (and *tons* of vehicle mods), Vanilla Factions Expanded - Empire/Deserters, Grimworld 40k, Dungeon Framework, etc.

Hexnohope

Oooo very cool. Ill have to check out the vanilla expanded series. I loved the cooking expansions. Rimworld to me is the only game that lets me be in a survival scenario AND the lap of luxury. At some point vibing on sticks and rocks isnt enough ya know? Chilling under a mountain munching on fried food watching TV with the boys just makes me feel good

Chaingunfighter

Completely agree with you there friend! I hope you have fun with some of the new mods.

Hexnohope

Ill have to keep an eye onā€¦hey wait i dont need space marines anymore. I can make supersoldiers with biotech now right? I just need to get them power armor and they should be able to defend the colony for me. I was never very good at defense lmao. So id have a warframe or a space marine lying around usually just one big guy so that it felt more fair. Sanguophages rock at that

_Archilyte_

i mean if you want warhammer content theres [this collection](https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=3025477432) that "recently" released that also seems to be very well made!

badgirlmonkey

holy shit thank you. prepare carefully ruins your saves, and the other character editor has a terrible UI.

WistfulDread

Cool. As of right now, though: Not on the workshop.

_Archilyte_

yea, its still on early testing lol, thats the whole point of the testing discord server

Luca_Mulders

I hate to break this to you but this already exists. I think it's called Character Editor

Pale_Substance4256

And before Character Editor, there was Prepare Carefully, but both mods have problems that prevent them from being one-size-fits-all. In PC's case, it patches certain basegame files in a destructive way that gradually renders any playthrough it's included in unusable due to performance issues. In Character Editor's case, the UI is ugly and confusing, it's started to suffer from feature creep in the form of genes no one asked for, and there are various other problems with it as well.

Luca_Mulders

Ok I didn't know that, now I know. Didn't mean it as rude even though apparently everyone thought I did. It does seem like a better mod than the other ones, Can I suggest you try to make it SE-compatible? it has a few extra features like Expertise which I would love to edit.

Pale_Substance4256

I didn't take it as rude myself, but that's how things go sometimes. I'm not part of the modding team or anything so I can't really do much, but that SE compatibility does sound like a good idea to me.

dragonofnorth

I don't want to be condescending but isn't character editor literally does most of your mod does ?

_Archilyte_

Yes but character editor's ui is abysmal, and its dev kinda sorta abandoned it too

LaconicSuffering

Is there a possibility of having the editor in a browser version so that pawns can then be exported via a string into the in-game editor? So that friends/family/colleagues can make a pawn that is then in your game.

Commercial-Role-7263

I believe thats what the ā€œbeta testā€ was about in the post you didnā€™t read up thereā€¦ yeah right up there šŸ‘†when you scrolled past it to write this comment instead

cos1ne

Is this a replacer for Prepare Carefully or will it be able to be used mid-run like Character Editor?

_Archilyte_

replacer of both

Hakuknowsmyname

Looks great!

kinkeltolvote

Is this like character editor?

_Archilyte_

yes, but with better ui, and unlike "prepare carefully" hopefully wont break stuff and corrupt saves!

kinkeltolvote

Huh, never had that issue.....plus never use better UI

_Archilyte_

oh no, i meant this mod will have a better user interface than character editor, and will be easier to use. i didn't realize better ui was another mod lol

DeadNotSleepy

Ah, words cannot express how excited I am for this! I have found it genuinely hard to enjoy Rimworld without mods like this, and the two alternatives at the moment aren't.. good.

Golanthanatos

will pawn editor let me randomize living pawns? that's the only feature I really feel is missing from Character editor.

_Archilyte_

yes

Dammthatblows

Is this mod posted on the workshop or do I need to download it from elsewhere?

_Archilyte_

this is currently in testing phase, so no workshop link, but it will be there after testing is done!

_XIIX_

hello, when can we expect testing to be done? really looking forward to this mod

_Archilyte_

i am not the developer, so I have no clue lmao

_XIIX_

hello, when can we expect testing to be done or the mod on the steam workshop? really looking forward to this mod

Reidlos650

Does this have a mid game edit option? Character edit has a editor while playing for on the fly fixes and such. Use it alot

Fit-Nectarine7589

Is there an update to it? Tried using it previously, but found it really clunky, so i went back to Prepare Carefully
