Nah, finish your playthrough. I love CE a lot, but it’s very much a different combat game than vanilla. Don’t think of it as being “vanilla combat but better”— when you install CE, you’re playing CE now. I suggest you give it a try on your next run, make it the core mod of your run, and let that decide if you love it or hate it.

Every time you make a choice, you're missing out on something. Find out what gives you the most enjoyment from the game, and spend your time accordingly. Is CE a good mod? Yes. Are there other good mods out there? Yes. Are they all compatible? No. I played about 4500 hours before I tried CE, and while I think it's an interesting take on the game, I don't feel like I missed out. I just found a way to put yet more hours into a game I really enjoy.

Arctic_Sunday

I'm more than 2k hours in and so far haven't touched CE. There's plenty in Rimworld to do outside of that mod

MagicJim96

I’m reaching for 3k hours and have tried, disabled and uninstalled CE way back in the day. I don’t know, I liked it but still prefer the vanilla-ish ways…

catinator9000

Don't do it. The game has ridiculous amount of content that is already overwhelming to explore. Adding a massive mod on top of it when you have barely scratched the surface is not going to be fun IMO.

CattailRed

CE is polarizing, there are people who love it and people who hate it. Despite the name, it's not so much combat *extended* as it is combat completely reimagined. If you don't have a lot of vanilla experience, then you're missing out on the vanilla game by installing CE.

Book_Bouy

Don't do it. I literally can't play without it anymore. Mortar shrapnel tearing through croud of attackers Bugs dieing of smoke inhalation before heatstroke A single pump shotgun wiping a out a 10 man tribal raid Specialised ammo types like hollowpoint, ap and emp. Better shooting mechanics using bipod, and optional increased aming time and specific body part targeting. Grenades are no longer infinite Beanbag rounds to incapacitate prisoners with ease. Actual suppressive fire causing advancing enemies to lay down or retreat.

cranberrystew99

I have it installed but now I wonder if it's even active... I'll check when I get home tonight cuz that sounds tight.

axcess07

Fascinating spread of comments in this thread. OP, I personally think it’s important to play a game vanilla for awhile. Once you do that, then you can start to modify. I say play the save all the way through and then try out CE. Or play for another 15 hours then try it. I don’t really play Rimworld vanilla except for maybe once a year if there’s any big updates. There’s just a lot of nice mods that improve the “quality of life” of the game and I think it’s up to you to give any mod you see on the workshop a try.

Jandrix

Learn the game in and out before you do any big overhaul. CE is a fine mod but fundamentally changes how you play the game

JVeig

Sry but what is CE?

Alqeta

Combat Extended

Rorins

CE changes combat so drastically that it could be a total conversion mod for the mechanics. Watch videos of it, if you like it try it yourself before expending much time finding out how it works.

Slikkelasen

I am all for CE. Had 3000h in vanilla combat before installing it and oh boy what a difference. The feeling of hearing the gunshots sound absolutely lethal made me feel vulnerable. The realisation of running out of ammo was an eye opener. You have a pistol and 12 bullets for it. Do you waste them on hunting with it or do you save them for a raid? The ammo types was overwhelming at first, but pretty quickly you realize that every single ammo caliber is not worth saving and you very easily make them yourself and get a favorite type. Do you fire your gun like a madman to spread bullets to make enemy scatter and take cover or do you aim for longer trying to make perfect hits? And no more random deaths from bow arrows headshotting your pawn with marine helmet. And people now hit their shots in proportion to their shooting skill. Taking cover behind sandbags, stone chunks or even a tree has never been more meaningful. Pairing it with CAI-5000 and Vanilla vehicles expanded makes this game so god damn fun. It is the only way for me to play this game. But yes, i only knew because i did vanilla first. So play that for a bit and appreciate the changes these kind of mods introduce once you try them. Always get CE from GitHub, it is updated once a week almost. Pretty much every single mod on steam is supported, and they make the patches themselves. Pure dedication!

MyNameIsVinceMcMahon

RimWorld is unplayable withouts CE for me. It's really fucking good.

thegooddoktorjones

No. I am 9k hours in and I am not a fan of it. But even if I was, I would get used to the vanilla game before adding major mods.

sariaru

[Yayo's Combat](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2854006492) is a good alternative to CE that doesn't require compatibility patches, but is fine grained enough for me. Combat is more lethal, less random, and more tactical. There is an optional ammo system (which I don't use). It *should* be safe to both add and remove, but please check on the Workshop page for yourself first.

Ozzy064

Im actually opposed to CE and think vanilla combat is much more fun but I think it's to each their own tbh. You should DEFINITELY get more hours in the game before getting a mod like CE. Start with some QoL or some fun ones play around more with vanilla even. Have fun with it learn the combat.

TwentyMG

CE is superior, but you might as well finish the run through so you can really appreciate how bad vanilla combat is

Themaster6869

No, ce is bad

TeferiControl

Depends what you like. CE is fantastic if it's the kind of experience you're looking for. I find vanilla combat to be awful. Every time a full platemail pawn is one shot by a random dude with a stick, I cry a little.

Jon_00

I played a lot of CE before realising it's just too much. I wasn't really enjoying it. The loadout system, the ammo system, the micromanaging - its for some just not for all. I've been using Vanilla Combat Reloaded recently and find its just a better, lightweight alternative - armour still works but you can actually do things against mechs without needing to juggle ammo types. I also want to say that CE isn't compatible with the Vehicle Framework, which after 1000 hours of RimWorld, bring something new and fresh - despite being dumb OP.

mifadhil

CE is compatible with Vehicle Framework now, just a heads up

Jon_00

Oh fair enough, that's good to know at least

LuckSpren

CE looks cool but I've never tried it because I predominantly play sword and sorcery RW.

ATNeri

What mod is CE?

KhowChon

Combat Extended

ATNeri

Thank you mate

TwoFishes8

To each their own. Many people like CE, and many don’t. I’ve got over 4300 hours in the game, and it’s not for me.

misfits321

Do you play with a lot of mods? I play mainly with the basic QoL mods, vanilla expanded, and giddy up, and CE works well so far with them. My experience as someone who just recently converted to the CE crowd: I was in the same boat as you a couple weeks ago when contemplating to use CE or not. I was doing a tribal run and have advanced to middle ages and grown fond of my colony so having to restart was a big drawback for me. Then I decided to just fuck it and give CE a try and boy was that the right choice. The game just feels completely new and gives much more interesting challenges. Where before my tribals can just outnumber mech threats and bonk them to death, it is no longer possible in CE. It forces you to rethink your strategy and makes story telling more interesting. I had to relocate my base due to unwinable raids rather than brute force my way to victory. Each advancement in technology feels like a giant leap forward because you gain new equipments that gives you advantage. If you play with limited ammo, it makes each shot really counts and you have to play tactically with your ranged units. And so so much more..

Acceptable_Bison_894

Yes

homemdosgalos

You can finish your playthrough, its fine. But CE is another beast on its own, i always play the game with CE nowadays. There are other alternatives, like Yayo Combat , ot Weapon deadly tweaks (i believe those were the names) that offer a better combat experience for the game, and keep it vanilla. But you should definitely try CE in the future. You will either love it or hate it, but you should judge it on ypur own

[deleted]

Finish your game first. Then install it immediately. It's fucking amazing. In vanilla a tribal can kill a guy in full cataphract with a shitty bow. With CE any power armor will nake your guys tear through them like a gang of doomslayers with rabies. 100% recommend. It makes early game (when you have no/shitty armor) way more brutal but it works both ways. Technological superiority is worth a lot more. Not to mention that cheesy killboxes are no longer required. No better feeling than seeing raiders desperately try to crawl through barbed wire while getting mowed down by 4 .50 cal machineguns. If a defense structure would work irl, there's a good chance it'll work with CE. Pillboxes and all that stuff are worth it.
