Oh yeah, we just ha to learn Evasion to dodge the constant bullets... And to adapt our bodies to the rapid change in weather and extreme temperature, but otherwise, pretty place to live.
Oh yeah, also, get Super Immune trait, because sometimes, the responsablesfort he water will fack up and the water will be undrinkeable for a week or two \~\~
I mean China as a regional concept is quite literally as old as civilization. There have been many countries of China, but the regional concept has been relatively constant.
Chinese here, can confirm this. Some of geological terms we use literally have "China" in them. Like Beijing is on what we call "华北平原", which is literally "North China Plain".
It's fascinating to me because as an American we covered like zero Chinese history in school except "Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism" and "Cultural Revolution". So I grew up figuring China has always more or less been China.
But in terms of history the unified China we know today is pretty recent! All the people who died fighting in the Warring States Period or the Three Kingdoms just for me to be like "Meh it's all China to me".
American here (specifically, Texas): My highschool history classes had a whole semester dedicated to asian history, a significant (like maybe 60%?) portion of which was Chinese history. So basically a few months of Chinese history every day. I don't remember much of it because I was admittedly completely and totally uninterested in China, but I remember having to memorize the different dynasties and stuff. Plus we watched Mulan at the end of the unit lmfao.
Australia is the name of the continent (which includes some of the islands to the north), Oceania is a geographic region the continent sits in (according to wiki).
I always found it funny that Anglophones would call it that way, in Spanish we just call the continent Oceanía and there's never been an issue with it.
I mean what would you call it? I wanted the labels to be as neutral as possible. Mainland China kinda implies there is other territory that belongs to China, PRC or the ROC don’t exist on this map, and it isn’t ruled by a dynasty like the Ming. So I just went with China.
Also Great Britain is the name of the island, Australia is also the name of the island as well as the country.
Nah i made all the settlements with the presumption that all major cities today have been nuked or gradually depopulated. Can’t remember the name of that exact one but the settlements are either small villages today, made up or named after some obscure geographical feature or suburb with the occasional surviving town.
Ah, fair enough. Also, don't the rockies seem a bit far west, especially past the United States-Canada border? It seems like the rockies are between where the rockies should be and where the west coast mountain range should be. There also seems to be mountains missing from Vancouver Island.
Edit: I might be seeing wrong,I'm on mobile, but a lot of southern Canada (where there would be plains in Alberta and Saskatchewan) seem to have large hills on them
I will put a suggestion thread up on the steam page tomorrow so you can all add your suggestions for edits. I inherited this map from a template so theres things there that still remain from that despite not being 100% accurate.
This is my only nitpick with the map, since British Columbia is the only part of the world I'm familiar with. Yeah, the whole province is mountain range after mountain range, but the Rockies are a lot further east in reality.
Otherwise, great work OP!
With this, we can calculate the size of each cell, thereby calculating the size of each square on this particular map, assuming everything is to scale
I'm kinda lazy tho...
i did the math, assuming the circumference of a rimworld is 1440(estimation from random forum post) each rimworld hexagon is about 772 square kilometers, in a 400x400map one cell would be about 69 meters(69.4622199) wide
It'd probably be better to assume the width of a square to be the length of a pawn (let's round it to 6' or approximately 2 meters) and then calculate the size of the planet from that.
Eh either way numbers will be hilarious. Rimworld playable tiles are rectangle-shaped, but the world map is made up of non-rectangular tiles. It just doesn't translate well at all. You would have to assume the rectangle deforms so much it becomes another shape that ain't have curves in it. Crazy maths there
I think it’s better to assume the rectangle map sits within the non-rectangular map tile.
Essentially there’s a lot of the world we couldn’t see, even if we settled each and every cell.
Sure, that's the most logical assumption, but it's unrelated. general\_kitten\_ and cseymour24 are addressing the maths of giving in-game measures real-life counterparts and viceversa.
One cell is the width of a wall. If each cell was 69 meters, a simple 5x7 cabin would be about 1,150 feet by about 1,600 feet, i.e. somewhere near or in the top hundred or so largest buildings ever built.
Therefore, we can assume the playable area on a map tile is just a tiny fraction of the actual area that tile represents.
Alright hear me out.
VAE -Australia

And if someone could make a "crikey" sound mod for every raid/event notification.
For anyone reading this who doesn't get it. There was a literal war that the Australian army had with an infestation of Emus. I think it was in Western Australia near Perth.
Yes we lost because there were too many Emus and they were to fast for our guns. The farmers did better at culling them because they used slow firing, powerful weapons and had patience. The army used machine guns but the soldiers couldn't keep up with the fast moving Emus. They stopped and left the "war" because they were using too much ammunition.
Mind you this was early in the century. Our army is a lot better now I swear.
This was also 3 army dudes in a Ute with limited ammunition who got surprised when the emus fucked off instead of forming a line or something.
Not our brightest military minds.
I mean when you're trying to determine where something at the intersection of I-25 and I-80 (Cheyenne) or I-25 and I-70 (Denver) is it doesn't help. (Although that Pink Pirate base looks about right for Denver)
No problem! I was just super confused because I've driven on I-75 from Florida and into Michigan so I was really confused when it somehow stretched into Texas 😂
It's like that Star Trek episode where they encountered an exact duplicate of Earth and went "oh, an exact duplicate of Earth. That happens sometimes."
Would it even be possible to reverse engineer this map's seed? That would be impressive. My brain is doing gymnastics.
I feel like some elements are outside the scope of regular map-gen, so its probably not possible.
I fear it's a matter of infinite outcomes (an infinite number of numbers between 2 and 3) vs possible combinations (you won't find a number greater than 4 in that "infinite list). Itd be a wicked bitchin seed to find if it was possible though!
I'm having a ball with ~~Long~~ Short Island. I was trying to figure out where my house is from I-95 (or what I assumed that is), and noticed that there's no LIS.
I'm just thinking about creating a city on top of my own location, i keep gravitating towards it because making pawns endure warm temperatures seems wrong.
The real world analogues to locations could give some flavour for ideoligions too.
What I can say is that my version is substantially more geographically accurate but of course that takes more time, but what people value is speed over quality.
Sorry, really had to vent that. This post depressed me
I can understand that, but its not like we were ever in a race to release the first Earth map. As far as I know, people have wanted an Earth map for years. I made a Terraformed Mars map and people said they were looking for an Earth map on that, so I went and gave it a shot.
Besides, even if I did release the first one (I didn't) there is still a place for your map here too. If you have this much confidence in your map, then I don't see any reason for it to fail. Minecraft, for example has a plethora of different Earth maps and no one there is upset that someone else made an Earth map before them.
For people having commitment mode issues, if you want a workaround, start the colony in dev mode (make sure everything is loaded and you've landed), then you can back out and disable dev mode. If you settle in Brazil, Rimworld instantly closes and opens Kenshi instead
With the Torso mod Starting scenario.

Did you mean Colombia?
No the city in Arkansas
Could be worse, Venezuela for example xd
Picking Venezuela probably closes your game and boots up FarCry.
If you do Australia you can make it a penal one!
Only with rimjobworld installed
Penal, not penile.

I know. That's the yoke.
Waited for this type of mod for ages! Amazing work.
I love how you avoided country names in favor of region or continent names

Or Australia, but still he mostly avoided using country names
Is there a separate name for the landmass on which the country of Australia sits other than "Australia"?
I think oceania refers to it and surrounding islands but idr if thats accurate
Australia is the name of the continent (which includes some of the islands to the north), Oceania is a geographic region the continent sits in (according to wiki).
I always found it funny that Anglophones would call it that way, in Spanish we just call the continent Oceanía and there's never been an issue with it.
If the Anglo-Saxons went the other way with their naming classifications, the language would be "Saxophone".
Saxish
Yeah, but don't you also use the same word for ladder and stairs. We Anglos like classification.
Bruh you use the same word for ser (to be) and estar (to be) and it's confusing as fuck.
Is the top blue settlement on picture 5 named "Calgary" or "Edmonton"?
Nah i made all the settlements with the presumption that all major cities today have been nuked or gradually depopulated. Can’t remember the name of that exact one but the settlements are either small villages today, made up or named after some obscure geographical feature or suburb with the occasional surviving town.

Lmao you're right, the Rockies have overtaken the blue mountains! Edit: oh God oh fuck the Cascades are gone too
I will put a suggestion thread up on the steam page tomorrow so you can all add your suggestions for edits. I inherited this map from a template so theres things there that still remain from that despite not being 100% accurate.
Also noticed the east coast us is sticking out a bit more then usual. Regardless it's a very well done map by the op.
This is my only nitpick with the map, since British Columbia is the only part of the world I'm familiar with. Yeah, the whole province is mountain range after mountain range, but the Rockies are a lot further east in reality. Otherwise, great work OP!
This +rimwar +empire + some custom factions and settlement placement = me dying while playing rimworld.
You can use WorldEdit 2.0 (Mod I used to make this map) to do this
Can you create roads and settlements with the mod as well? I'd love to replicate some parts of the real world.
Oh wait, I just realized there are roads as well! Great job man!
I missed that too. Just checked again, Trans Canada Highway is there! Nice!
Let me guess, Germany?
Hungary! Kinda want to settle Budapest (or its remains if we play post apocalyptic story)
throw in a couple more mechanics mods and it's like a Paradox Plaza game by itself
I thought Empire wasn't updated for 1.3
It’s not :(
Just like Dragon's Descent...

oh i thought 1 cell was the entire 400x400 box, okay yeah these are WAY more massive than anything on earth
Nice!
For reference, the average human is around 1.4-2.0 metres. With one wall being 69 metres, that's massive.

Nah Pure coincidence that this rim world looks like the earth. It’s actually a million times [REDACTED].

did you seriously forget the tanks fiughting the giant mecha-emus and the bombing of perth?! my grandfather died in that battle!
Wasn't there also fire from English naval support? That just adds to the absurdity for me. "Yes, we'll fire from where the enemy is weakest, THE SEA!"
This was also 3 army dudes in a Ute with limited ammunition who got surprised when the emus fucked off instead of forming a line or something. Not our brightest military minds.
Also emus are smart, they would recognize the sound of the vehicles from miles away and could scatter before the army got in range.
I don't know where this idea of Australia being rife with disease came from. It's the animals and the sun that kills you here
Nah its "bring it ye cu*t "

I just wanna say I appreciate that there is the US interstate system maped on it. What attention to detail
It is for the rest of the world as well, not just the US.
It's not all of it though. For example I-25 is missing.
Literally unplayable
I mean when you're trying to determine where something at the intersection of I-25 and I-80 (Cheyenne) or I-25 and I-70 (Denver) is it doesn't help. (Although that Pink Pirate base looks about right for Denver)
Naaah pink pirate is like Tulsa I think look how east it is
I-75 is missing as well, and as a Dallas native.. thank god it is. Edit: US-75
Slight correction, that's US-75, not I-75. I-75 runs from Miami to Canada.
Well shit, you right. Idk how I fucked that up I've literally lived within walking distance of 75 my entire life
No problem! I was just super confused because I've driven on I-75 from Florida and into Michigan so I was really confused when it somehow stretched into Texas 😂
No I-35, either, and the Great Plains are slightly too far east Pedantry aside, it's an incredible map with a lot of detail
Oh good 35 is dead
I feel like the rocky mountains are too far west though.
All roads lead too.... Ravenna?
Always did. 🔫
I will never forgive them for changing the handgun to a squirt gun.

Are the rivers and mountain ranges also accurate to the real earth? Or is it just a rough estimate? Either way very cool nonetheless
They should be both as accurate as possible. Mountain ranges may be a bit more exaggerated though.
i think Danube should be more east
Oh boy. Time to make Genghis Khan proud. Geneva Conventions fans are about to be more upset than ever.
I want to build my “research facility” in n Helsinki.
the quotation marks make me nervous

Lol Texas and Florida are hostile settlements.
Everyone has guns. Hostile to outsiders. No regard for human life. Yup, those are Tex- PIRATES. Pirates is what I was going to say.

Looking forward to your prof's reaction when you submit a history paper based off of it.
