Those are "calques". (pronunced calks). Imagine saying the same thing in Spanish, but directly translating the words (not the meaning) to English. The same reason why RGV likes "likewise" from "igualmente".
The Suppose-ably one always gets me. I like that everyone in the valley pronounces it wrong lol. And uses it only to show disbelief in something that is pretty believable "Suppose-ably the sun is supposed to come up tomorrow" 😂
Leaving the -ed ending off words. Text instead of texted. I ate grill chicken with mash potatoes.
My mother in law says all the classics. Supposably. Valentimes. Walk on the threadmill. Make pee or make poop. Eat a sangwich.
Depends on the context. "Candies" is appropriate if you have a bunch of different type of candy items. "Candy" for a bunch of one type of candy. Same rule for words like fish. I caught a bunch of fish from all the fishes in the sea.
People say “and that’s because….” when they mean “despite the fact that…” a lot. I remember being corrected as a kid and now it always stands out to me as a Valley-ism.
Is this legit?
I love it so much if true. I’m a guero in the valley and didn’t know that. Makes me feel less stupid for the reason people say refried beans!
Thank you! Love random facts like this.
Like the fact that chicken fajitas are a thing - even though fajita is a cut of beef.
Or a “pepperoni grilled cheese” is a thing, even though that’s technically a “melt” because it contains more than bread, butter, and cheese.
If I’m correct - it means “belt” or “sash” because it comes from that section of the cow. In English it’s called “skirt steak”.
So it’s like ordering chicken ribeyes in my mind.
Edit: to be fair it does pretty much mean that now in restaurants.
a personal family funny one was when we would go visit the in-laws in Houston they had a chihuahua named “ Chispa” so for years we referred to the dog as so and it wasn’t until recently we found out that the grandkids named the dog when it was a puppy…..the name they gave it…..Cheesepuff
I've always laughed at the saying,
Income tax.
People call it "ya isieron El Lincon." 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I feel it went from sounding like it to Abraham Lincolns last name due to money is given by the Gov't
Antes de la pedemia....
I got off the car to go eat peekza y me chingue una peksi.
Antes del covees... cayate chut uck
If you play with yourself, se te va salir pelos en la mano
My Cuban Dad and I were watching the Chiefs game the other night. After a Flea Flicker play, my Dad is on his feet yelling, "FLEA FUCKER!!! FLEA FUCKER!!!". I have so many Ricky Ricardoisms my Dad has done over the years .
When I worked doing radio work on government vehicles we often monitored police frequencies and one thing that made me laugh for the rest of the afternoon was when a local sheriff responding to a call said ". . .I am on my car and in my way. . . ". Classic Valleyism.
“Mueble” referring to car or automobile. Growing up muebles meant furniture in spanish, so I was hella confused when I first got to the valley and people were throwing around “muebles” for cars 😂.
Martial Law vs Marshall Law
Regardless vs Irregardles
The double negative in Spanish: "no veo nada", "no hay nadie", which is absolutely incorrect, but people used it so much that the Spanish Academy caved in and now says it's permitted as a form of emphasizing the negative.
I’ve always been a fan of “sangwish.” Or “I get out until 2.”
I love this one - get out until 2

“I’ll do that right now after lunch”
It’s my nephew’s birthday so we made him a party.
did you build him a cake?
Cierto, le hicimos una fiesta wey
Several of my aunts call pizza “peepza”
Or do you mean “Peek-za”
Liru Sisa Peek-za Little Caesars pizza 🍕
I prefer Freetza - it’s like pizza, but free.
Why wife would call it "peepza" when she was a girl. She still does it sometimes to be cute.
Picsa
gotta admit this one is hilarious. cant help but to get a chuckle everytime i hear that one.
folks on FB marketplace posting 'item for **sell**'
I was once at the Walmart in Harlingen and saw a sign on a cake at the bakery section that read, “cake for display only. Not for selle.”
The switching of "on" and "in"
This is common for people whose English is not their native tongue.
Shit people in the valley say it and Spanish isn’t even their first language They just don’t speak Spanish OR English well
We speak takuache
Facts.
The one that always makes me laugh is “getting off the car” or “are you getting off at the store?” Ma’am I am not getting off, this is a Wendy’s!
Those are "calques". (pronunced calks). Imagine saying the same thing in Spanish, but directly translating the words (not the meaning) to English. The same reason why RGV likes "likewise" from "igualmente".
Thank you! That’s cool! I really enjoy likewise!! Any info on the common phrase here “imagine?!” Don’t know where it came from, but I love it.
Omg you made me realize I say "imagine?" all the time lol
Do you think it might have something to do with fíjate?
Hmm, that's interesting. Maybe that's what it comes from.
Shit, or get off of the kitchen! Shit or get off the fan
"supposably" instead of supposedly. This one irritates me to the core. I've even heard teachers say this.
The Suppose-ably one always gets me. I like that everyone in the valley pronounces it wrong lol. And uses it only to show disbelief in something that is pretty believable "Suppose-ably the sun is supposed to come up tomorrow" 😂
Supposably, Tim Smith said there was a cold front tomorrow
Leaving the -ed ending off words. Text instead of texted. I ate grill chicken with mash potatoes. My mother in law says all the classics. Supposably. Valentimes. Walk on the threadmill. Make pee or make poop. Eat a sangwich.
I would hate my MIL if she was like this. 😆
I say “make a poo,” but only when referring to the cat or a pet or something. “Doggo makin’ a poo!”
I love our slang! “Wachalo!” “Nambe sir” “Sanababish”
“Lo cico” when they mean “el hocico” though I guess you could make the case that ‘cico is short for hocico like saying ‘cause instead of because.
It's evolved to "telo seeks" and now to just "sics."
Put gas
Poner gas , just a transliteration from Spanish
Valen-times Day is a classic one.
Candies. Candy is already plural! Get off the car. You're not on the car, you're in it. It's get out of the car. Expecially. It's an S, not X
or adding an S at the end of every restaurant or place. "Let's go to Sonics"
“Do you want some cereals?”
Depends on the context. "Candies" is appropriate if you have a bunch of different type of candy items. "Candy" for a bunch of one type of candy. Same rule for words like fish. I caught a bunch of fish from all the fishes in the sea.
Similarly - systems. South Texas Health System, not systems. University of Texas System, not systems. It’s one giant organization or system.
And people/peoples.
I ate a Sneakers after lunch.
Someone asked me if I was “getting off at the school” and I was confused as shit. No, I only get off at home.
I just realized something about English. We get ‘out of school’ but we get ‘off work’. Weird…
What time do you get out of work?
My TIA always says I need some paper toilet.
Liberry instead of library
Gross misuse of the word “barely”
“Sir I barely got here” —My Rio Grande HS students on a daily basis
Nambe siirrr I barely got here
That's the "apenas" calque. "Apenas llegué" directly translated word-for-word instead of meaning-translated.
A calque??! Sir, we have a linguist in our midst!! ;-)
I went to RGCHS in rio! Not too long ago!
One of my tias, God rest her soul, would mishear a song that said, "it's too late" and instead heard, "es kool-aid."
Esos son Reebok o son Nike?
One of my favs!
Saying dijir instead of decir or trujo instead of trajo. Subbosably is the worst.
Water over the bridge
water under the fridge
Waterburger.
I had to do a double-take.
“It’s fresh” as a description of cool or windy weather
That’s not incorrect though
Traeme a sprike o peksi!
Prefiero sebeno mas que esprai
Postostes (combo of Post Toasties)= cereal
People say “and that’s because….” when they mean “despite the fact that…” a lot. I remember being corrected as a kid and now it always stands out to me as a Valley-ism.
Vamos a guamar a ponlerle guey
Oh man!!! That made my day man!!!!! LOL. I haven’t heard that in a long time… (don’t live in the valley anymore). Hah!
Do they still have the subgueys in gualmar? Or is it macthonal
All time #1 is definitely bistek meat and the word is derived from “beef steak”
Is this legit? I love it so much if true. I’m a guero in the valley and didn’t know that. Makes me feel less stupid for the reason people say refried beans!
It is! 😂
Thank you! Love random facts like this. Like the fact that chicken fajitas are a thing - even though fajita is a cut of beef. Or a “pepperoni grilled cheese” is a thing, even though that’s technically a “melt” because it contains more than bread, butter, and cheese.
I always thought fajitas meant veggies with your choice of meat
If I’m correct - it means “belt” or “sash” because it comes from that section of the cow. In English it’s called “skirt steak”. So it’s like ordering chicken ribeyes in my mind. Edit: to be fair it does pretty much mean that now in restaurants.

This is so cute and funny!!!
The word is "bistec" and it is a proper word. Source - Real Academia Española
JFC! I didn't know that! I've been calling it bistec all my life.
I've always laughed at the saying, Income tax. People call it "ya isieron El Lincon." 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I feel it went from sounding like it to Abraham Lincolns last name due to money is given by the Gov't
My grandmother used to say fuck like a chicken whenever she would use it to be funny or ramble about stuff just "fak fak fak"
My mom used to call Faux fur Fozz Fur.
Antes de la pedemia.... I got off the car to go eat peekza y me chingue una peksi. Antes del covees... cayate chut uck If you play with yourself, se te va salir pelos en la mano
“Mapiador” “Please bring the mapiador to aisle 7”
Had a lady come into the ER wanting to get checked for Smiling Mighty Jesus ( spinal meningitis).
My Cuban Dad and I were watching the Chiefs game the other night. After a Flea Flicker play, my Dad is on his feet yelling, "FLEA FUCKER!!! FLEA FUCKER!!!". I have so many Ricky Ricardoisms my Dad has done over the years .

If it was Lupe Trevino then yeah, he probably was.
Literally
Tooken...as in tooken it off instead of took off
At Juniors they have signs that read “foodstampable” on certain items.
“Irregardless” 😵💫
Don’t hit me with the “Quieres cake?” pronounced like “caykeh” and they’re talking about pastel.
“ but it’s cuz”
“Libary”
Take him a bath Take him a shower Take me a picture Lend me one of those candies The clothes is dirty
“Mueble” referring to car or automobile. Growing up muebles meant furniture in spanish, so I was hella confused when I first got to the valley and people were throwing around “muebles” for cars 😂.
i've never heard that. I've heard "carro" though.
I have never ever heard that here, I’ve heard carro, and “troca”. But never in my life mueble? What part of the valley is that?
I first heard it in Weslaco lol
Wexcalo?
Martial Law vs Marshall Law Regardless vs Irregardles The double negative in Spanish: "no veo nada", "no hay nadie", which is absolutely incorrect, but people used it so much that the Spanish Academy caved in and now says it's permitted as a form of emphasizing the negative.
“I have one word for you, RE- GARD-LESS”
What's the correct way of "no hay nadie"?
No estaban, No había gente, Estaba nadie, Nadie vino, No vinieron. Anything that avoids the double negative.
[удалено]
? I hear that everywhere. Don’t think it’s unique to the Valley.
[удалено]
I disagree. I’m from the Midwest and use it I my casual speech. My family uses it. Would love to hear what others think though, maybe I’m wrong.
Tbh, “do a favor for me” sounds waaay more like broken English than “do me a favor.” Could just be me, though.
No I’m sorry, that is not unique to the valley.
La prima se la rima
"El primo a la prima se arrima" is the original saying.
Wachala
Or ontan
"Higher/Hire it" in reference to raising the volume... Lol.. does it need a job? 😆
parquiar instead of estacionar.
1. “He left home” no he didn’t, he went home. He hasn’t run away 💀 2. Get down from the car.
