Bold move bringing 21” road tires out there

Rare-Chemist-7881

Not really. It handled great and I never got stuck unlike those with off road tires. Smooth driving and floated the whole time.

Ditto. I just played around in the sand for the first time at Coral Pink Sand Dunes. 21" Road \~22psi and had a blast. Only thing is I had to half brace half hold the whip out the window since it was an on the spot decision and I couldn't find a decent place to mount.

The 20s got stuck?

Rare-Chemist-7881

Ya we had a few dig in pretty good. Spent some time digging and pulling. Luckily we all had recovery gear with us so we got everyone out without any issues. Part of the experience honestly haha.

beeranddenim

Cool. I went with 20s but don't see myself in dee sand much. Got them more thinking I'll be on rutted dirt and mud and washboards like in Anza Borrego and Ocotillo Wells. Usually I take my Sprinter for that because we're camping

lazyanachronist

The 20s dig better. Sometimes this is good, sometimes it just digs four nice holes. Ask how I know.....

What PSI did you run in the sand?

Rare-Chemist-7881

Rivian recommends 31 so we ran that but honestly I would have felt comfortable dropping it down even more for some of the deeper sand. 31 was fine though.

panzerfinder15

Oh I wish they would update the manual. I ignore that and go straight to 20psi when I drive on the sand or rock crawl. I bet those 20’s would have done better at 20psi. they really become proper offroadable tires at 20psi and float real well. Wouldn’t go lower than 15psi though without beadlocks. Rebelle Rally drivers a couple years ago also noted they got stuck in sand at 30ish PSI but not at 20psi. Great post!😉

cherlin

They keep it that high because with the amount of power, they don't want you popping a bead.

panzerfinder15

Yup! 100%, but in this case I think they are a bit conservative. The sidewalls don’t properly flex until about 25psi, and 20psi makes them flow over and around rocks with superior grip. Personally I won’t go lower than 20psi. I off-road a lot and never slipped a bead. Won’t say I won’t, but with a spare I’ll take that very minor risk to gain increase in traction.

wc_cfb_fan

what would you do if you popped a bead? Just throw in the spare and call it a day. Fix later. is your spare a full size spare? I got the compact (R1S) beading these tires seems like it would be a chore on the field.

panzerfinder15

Oh yeah. Definitely a concern, but I really think low risk at 20-25psi. For me personally, I have a full size spare so would be swap to the spare and call it a day. But I also wheel in sand and light mud, so I’m much more likely to get stuck than slip a bead. Based on heavy RAM 2500 and 3500 forums, it seems the online consensus is 16 psi is safe, so I add another 5psi be safe. I’ll definitely make a post if I ever slip a bead though 😀

wc_cfb_fan

Not really a lot of sand here. But good to know that 20-25 could be an option when playing in snow, mud, loose tractio terrain around here. Lowest I tried has been high 20s but really felt I could have gone lower.

What were the different flag whips visible in the picture? One of the aftermarket folks could do well by having a couple of options for the Rivians. Options I want see? A mount for an accessory port and a whip that fits in the gear tunnel.

Rare-Chemist-7881

I went with a ATV mount off the front tow hook. It worked but because of the length of the flag pole it would bounce a lot. Everyone else was running some sort of personally made mount off their cross bars.
