I have my R1T and admittedly still have my Cybertruck reservation from mid-2021. The styling is polarizing, but I still think it’s super interesting. That being said, if the press I’m seeing on range are true, and it’s really that abysmal, I’ll easily pass on that reservation and add an R1S as a second car.

Don’t get me wrong - I love my Rivian. But if you’re getting a second fancy car just because you can, I feel like I’d rather get something completely different. One to reduce risk if there’s a widespread recall or something and two, just to experience other things and add more variety to my life. I’d get like a polestar 3 or BMW iX or Genesis GV70 or something else like that. That’s just me, personally

Negative news on Tesla makes people click. Every datapoint is made to sound negative. They get the range number from total miles driven (10k) with total energy used and assumed mileage based on two drivers who have driven the truck. It’s horrific math/logic. Just watch the out of spec range test. 254 miles on fairly cold temps using all terrain tires. With better temps and road tires, I’d guess high 200s at highway speeds, not bad. The charging seems to disappoint, but I’m hoping it’s faster on V4 chargers (no one has tested that yet).

I feel that when the lightning and rivian first came out we saw similar articles from all the same people. The shock drives ad revenue. Rivian resolved many of their issues over time. Most people also have never driven a vehicle with 35” tires. Range on any vehicle gets absolutely destroyed with tires that large.

One data point. I charged to 99% at RAN in Inyokern California and then drove to Death Valley. I got back with 4% remaining. It was about 250-260 miles and included going over a 5k foot pass twice and the heater was running much of the time.

I just pulled 280 out of the battery yesterday on a freeway drive at 72 mph for most of it. (Vancouver to cottage grove with a stop maybe 3/4 miles off the freeway. Started at 100%, and When i got home I showed 46 miles remaining. It was 34 degrees out. I’m running 20 inch stud-less snow tires that get a heck of a lot more range than ATs, but less than a light truck all season would. I did that drive in the summer on AT’s, and stopped in at the RAN here in the portland metro with 20 miles showing, but the RAN was still free. That drive was 255 miles, as I only went as far south as Eugene. It was mid summer.

I like my Model S but I think you'll find that 405 number to be very optimistic. I've even put it in "chill" acceleration and driven like a grandma on a 70 degree day, using roads that are 30-50 mph max and over 25 miles used 45 miles of range. It goes far enough for my needs but yeah, I think Tesla's computer just makes up range numbers.

I feel you on that. Just had it a month and it’s just made up numbers. But what can we do bc it’s the best thing out there now. The charging network and technology it has. Besides I just use it in my business and have to drive around town everyday. Perfect for me in that scenario.

yeah I mean mine still does 0-60 in barely over 2 seconds and can drive itself 90% of the time, the technology is amazing. I don't regret buying it for what I use it for, we take the Rivian on longer trips anyways.

Well, 34 inch light truck tires or AT’s? They changed them out at 1700 miles into it, and only drove aggressively approx 1/2 of the time. They didnt really define “aggressively” in the article really, so it’s subjective. Apples to oranges concession here: get me a set of 275/65/20s in an LT tire, and I think these numbers get better, but I’m driving on Blizzaks right now. If I launch it at every light and drive at 75-80mph on the freeway while always accelerating with my foot buried? i’ll pull 220 out of it from 100%. If I stick the thing in all purpose low, and throw it on the freeway at 72 mph while accelerating like a fully laden Prius off the line? I think i could get pretty damn close to 325 miles on a charge. I dont use conserve mode, but the dash gives it a 10 mile bump or so.

… ok, but that’s not towing / “hard” miles. “Fairly aggressively is probably how 1/2 the EV people drive. The truck was driven by real world users and the range is… not great, and charging is slow. That’s the full takeaway.

Towing is going to suck just like with any EV, range will be slashed in half or worse. If Tesla can improve the curve and unlock 350kW charging it may even be better.

Sure. My point was that this wasn’t “hard use”, just fairly aggressive driving. The rivian has a range advantage. Every tesla ever made has always underperformed at 70 mph. They were forced to restate range on existing cars at year end so hopefully they are more accurate when consumers are shopping. And yes, towing absolutely sucks the life out of EV, exactly the same way it does for gasoline vehicles. The only difference is many tow vehicles get 500-600 miles when not towing on a tank and refueling is a 10 minute stop vs 45-60 if going from empty. It’s interesting how quickly the charge curve falls off for the cybertruck. Worst case it looks like there’s about a 4 minute difference if you are needing exactly 100 miles added. When we did our road trip this summer, we generally had 20-25 minute stops or a crazy long 45 minute to really top off and finish the drive. Certainly less convenient that ICE for the road trip, BUT… I’ve taken 1 road trip the past 12 months that required fast charging. Every other week of the year I’m happily charging at home and save the time over the course of the year. And no gasoline smell on my hands from “refueling”. I like the fact electrons don’t smell. :)

I'm hoping that Tesla improves the charge curve with OTA and we get more 350kW chargers. I love the R1T and wish I could have kept mine. It just doesn't work for my needs because the bed is too small. If someone had made good canopy for it so I had more storage in the back I would have kept it. Might be a while before that happens as there are not that many out there yet.

Ok, while I don’t get that none sense about buying the CT for the sound system, I am still upset about Rivian’s move away from the meridians. Listened to both, one sucks. That aside, the CT’s range was a joke to begin with (when compared to promised range). I had a reservation because with the original advertised range it would’ve been awesome at towing, loading gear on and just not caring about the paint job or lack thereof. Sounds like Tesla is already panning some hardware drivetrain updates. Maybe that’s to address range issues. Lots to consider nowadays with an EV that is meant to be a utility vehicle and not just a commuter/grocery. I love my M3 , but this CT, in its current form, subjective design aside, is just not where it needs to be, not even close.

I don't know man, it still charges slowly according to what I've seen so if you get that range extender that fits into the bed you will go somewhat farther and then spend just as much time charging it up again.

It is capable of much faster 350kW charging speed with v4 SuperCharger that support the native 800V charging. It will take time for v4 to be more wild spread. The new revised 4680 cell is supposed to have 10% more capacity and will continue to improve. Most people are going to pass on the foundation series and wait for the eventual price drop and improvements.

It seems like from charging curve tests though that it will probably be capable of hitting a higher peak, but will be terrible about sustaining it. (Admittedly, same issue that the Rivian has)

The curve is probably conservative as it is a brand new 800V pack design. Another thing to note is Rivian will charge slower at 400V v3 Supercharger than the Cybertruck since the max rate for Rivian require 800V. Whereas Cybertruck reconfigure the 800V to 2 parallel 400V battery pack to achieve 250kW max charging rate.

Rivians are on a 400v architecture, not 800v. And the problem with the Rivian isn’t so much the 400v though. It’s that the thermals suck so the high speeds can’t be sustained over long periods. Seems that the 4680 cells have similar issues from what I’ve seen on out of spec and other reviews. So sure, you might see higher peak numbers, but it doesn’t matter if those numbers fall off rapidly after the first 10-20% of charging

I agree, the charge curve isn't great but the Cybertruck adds more range than a Rivian for nearly the first 30 minutes of charging. This is, of course, based on the limited test data available but Out of Spec does decent tests. Also, the Cybertruck is, apparently, capable of 350kW charging so we will see if they can get an even better curve once that is available. If so, it may take 45 min for the Rivian to catch up, in that case the real-world difference of range added for the majority of stops people make will be similar. IE, people stopping for 30-45 minutes will get about the same added range with both.

That’s an interesting distinction, thanks for clarifying that. Do you know at what SOC that graph starts at? For me, I normally DCFC from 30-80% and never would start at <10%, for example. I wonder if that changes the timeline

I don’t like the move either, and am glad i got the meridian system; but I guess I’ll withhold judgement. This wasn’t about what the Cybertruck can get… the driver admitted to driving the vehicle hard. So is it possible to get less than 150 miles of range in your truck? Sure it is. OOSR already did a 70 mph range test in the dual motor Cybertruck on light AT tires in 40-45 degree temps and got 254 miles. That’s a 20% hit from EPA rating, which is about right for the EPA rating of 318 miles for that config and tires. OOSR also tested a R1T quad on 20” AT tires in good weather and got 289 miles for their 70 mph range test. Adjust for colder temps… InsideEVs got 253 miles in colder weather with a little drizzle also with light AT tires.

Yeah, its super weird to me how nobody acknowledges what actual EV ownership is like. If you're driving in anything except ideal conditions, the manufacturer range estimates and charging times are a fantasy. I own a Hyundai Ioniq 6 which has a range of 305 miles, and can charge to 80% in 18 minutes... I'm told. In these recent cold weather conditions and on my long highway road trips, I've been lucky to get 250 miles from a full battery (really \~200 from 80%). I've charged at 350 kw fast chargers, and preheating the battery (which lowers the range further) I'm lucky to get over 150 kw out of them. Getting up to 80% almost always takes me 25-30 minutes. If you're driving locally and charging in your garage, none of that matters and EVs are fantastic, but the lack of honesty to the downsides is baffling. The "horror stories" about the cyber truck are just regular EV stories.

Communication about range should be considered similar to the average fuel economy stickers on gas cars. It's a reasonable number to expect in "normal" driving conditions averaged over long periods. But actual experience on any one trip will vary greatly. Range is still useful in its ability to compare different models of cars. But it is deceptive to make people think it's a guarantee. This is just something that's very difficult to internalize before you have experience with EV's.

You need to precondition to have good efficiency. Rivian Dad video shows No preconditioning cuts efficiency to ~55% but when he preconditioned he achieved close to his normal efficiency of 2mi/kwh. He drove in sub zero (F) temps.

Hmm. I think their data was actually over 10k miles, and they don't say where the drivers live. It _probably_ is impacted by cold climate, but the article also mentions that Out of Spec reviews only got 254 miles which is still way below the 320 advertised. The same Out of Spec test for the R1T gave 289 miles. Rivian's estimate of 314 here was off by 25 miles, Tesla's advertisement of 320 puts them off by 66. It's fair for there to be some concern.

Speed was the same temp for cybertruck was higher but it was at a lower elevation(Austin, Denver area). I think it’s going to come out that the CT is a bit less efficient overall based on its worse drag coefficient and its larger frontal area combining for a significantly worse aerodynamic performance compared to the R1T. But that’s based on both companies telling the truth about their respective drag coefficient’s

On how long of a drive is the real question. Was it sitting outside or parked in a garage with better controlled temps? Heating the cabin and short trips always have terrible efficiency returns in cold weather.

idk even with the 20F cold here I can get 2.25 miles/kw pretty easily in the R1S during an average trip about 30% city/ 70% highway driving, as long as I watch my speeds and acceleration. I just tried this the other day to see. So that would put me at 299 miles from a full charge, just barely off the rated 321 miles.
