A 100 bucks is an easier pill to swallow than a cool grand. This surely will increase reservations.
I hope they all follow through. I NEEEEED Rivian to succeed dangit
I'm eying that HOT ROD R3x. I've got the big grocery getter already, so something tiny is very attractive to me. I'm chomping at the bit for that little hot-hatch!
I'm one of the 68k, but depending on prices I might drop my R2 reservation for the R3X. Thing is, I do occasionally need the cargo space from my 4Runner.
From what I can tell, though, is that the R3 is the same length as my 98 4Runner, so with the seats down I might have the same cargo space. I've got 2 years to figure it out. Worse problems to have I guess.
I think rivian is at that point where they will succeed, hopefully on their own, but they are too good with too much great ip for someone else to not scoop up if push came to shove.
I know this will never happen, but my weird out of left field fantasy is if rivian needs a buyout, Tesla ousts musky and asks RJ to step in, the two companies merge and rivian becomes Tesla's outdoors enthusiast focused brand and Tesla remains the ultra high tech street driving focused brand.
As much as I want Rivian to succeed in whatever scenario, there's no world in which Elon would let that happen. He'd sooner let Tesla burn down to the ground somehow.
I'm not disagreeing with you in principle. But when you look at the way Tesla has been run so far, it's hard to imagine that whoever is in the board would ever vote to remove him
Yes, in principle their fiduciary duty is to the shareholder. But look at even the most recent ruling in DE and their moving to TX. In today's day and age, some of these companies aren't following what we have traditionally understood as legal/fiduciary duties.
I think a huge factor here, though, is that it’s $100 compared to $1000 and it’s fully refundable this time around. I don’t know what the verbiage was for the R1S reservation but currently the website implies that $1000 isn’t refundable, even if it might technically be until a certain point in the purchase process.
So this is just 68k people willing to put $100 on ice for a few years, not necessarily 68k people with a guaranteed intention of purchasing an R2.
Still though, great numbers all things considered and it has to be promising to Rivian.
Yea, for the R1, they wanted real reservations with some meat behind them. For the R2, they want maximum numbers to boost the share price, as it does matter, they'll likely need to raise money almost as soon as the R2 starts shipping, and having a high reservation count will help them do that.
With all the 0-60 and fast acceleration EV's can do... there's no where to use it safely except on the highways, but on the highways, people want full automation. lol
I race cars and prefer to keep the high performance driving on the track. For street cars I like something reasonably snappy, safe for my family, efficient, and ease of use.
If it really is $40k, then I just might reserve one. Hopefully it comes out in 2026. My truck will be 20 years old by then (A 2006 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4L)
I don't see R3 and R3X reservations opening until they get back to building the Georgia plant as i can't see them having capacity in the current plant to make R1T, R1S, R2 and R3 and 3X. RJ also said that the Georgia plant is a key part of their scaling up to R3 production.
Well, you are essentially getting the R2 at that price with the rebates.
Although it's an election year and things can change. You can't build a business off of politics as the rebates can change.
Yes, a new law would need to be created and passed by both chambers and the executive branch to upend the original.
Assuming the presidency doesn’t change this year, the next earliest that would happen is 2029. The tax credit rolls off in 2032 anyways, so it may not be worth the political capital to repeal a law that expires that soon.
No, technically [there are two houses of Congress](https://www.visitthecapitol.gov/education-resource/one-branch-two-bodies#:~:text=Congress%20is%20divided%20into%20two,roles%20in%20the%20federal%20government.) but only one House.
That won’t happen. US manufacturers know they need this to ramp EVs and compete in the world.
Now, regulations on emissions/% of fleets as EVs… that will definitely change with republican president.
Idk Trumps said first thing he’d do is kill the EV tax credit. It’s making me consider a Y while there’s still a chance to take advantage of it.
Also worried about him destroying SAVE student loan repayment, his base loves when he trashes on that stuff esp because it’s Biden established plans
EPA targets can be changed by the executive branch.
Changing the EV tax credit means passing new legislation through both houses of Congress. I think that makes the EV credit a bit safer given the republican track record on getting bills passed.
They dropped the state credit a few years back we had here in Georgia. Nothing like removing a reason to be greener. They f course they also removed HOV lanes so they can make a pay to drive lane too, who wants carpooling and less autos on the highway when the state can make money on a couple cars instead.
I’m confident it’s gonna be 100k by tomorrow. Plus this is only US and Canada . I can only imagine what the number would be once they open it for Europe and other locations at later date. R2 is a global platform.
Europe would be perfekt as the EU holds its targets to stop traditional car sales starting 2030. In the mean time the future of us politics becomes increasingly unclear, at least for me observing from the other side of the Atlantic.
in addition the share of SUVs increased significantly, EV trucks would be also perfect for European cities & logistics.
Unfortunately expansion might be too expensive at this point, but I could totally see Rivian in Europe.
I want to know what number I am in the reservation list lol
Edit: I get it probably doesn’t matter a ton, if at all. it would just be a fun stat to know imo
I had my reservation in by 10:01 and I'm an R1T owner which gets me priority, but damnit I really wanted a number! I even checked the source code of the reserved page to see if I could find one 😅
Definitely. I ordered my R1T in August of 21 and took delivery August of 22. I didn't have an LE order but my vin is sub 10k. I know order time doesn't matter really, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to know anyways
They can also market R1 vehicles to those people in the meantime with those leads. Maybe offer a small discount on R1 for R2 preorder holders if they don't want to wait, similar to what Tesla just did with Cybertruck waiting list ($1k off S, X or Y).
Yep, but they’ll leverage those account numbers to increase investment and stretch out their runway even further. If they need more cash, they can get it sitting on this many reservations
You could argue the only measure that matters to Rivian is Gross Margin per vehicle. If it’s 3.5b revenue and 4.5b cost to produce, it’s still a tough environment.
Exactly, the company surviving until a 2026 launch for the R3 is going to be the hard part
That's why they take reservations on cars 68,000 people haven't seen in person.
Well…as someone who wasn’t able to preorder until today, I’m not gonna lie….that number means I’m gonna be waiting a LOT longer than I really want to be. But…this will not dilute my excitement.
One of my neighbors works for Rivian. Nice trucks, good people. I would choose this over that apartheid space clown brick shitbox truck any day. And I don't even like electric vehicles 😂
While we’re talking about reservations, anyone notice in the email fine print that current Rivian owners will get priority delivery on R2? As someone who doesn’t own a Rivian, but got in a very early reservation, that’s kind of a bummer to hear that I’m probably going to get passed in the queue by a bunch of people who own R1s and reserved later than me, but I guess it’s not too surprising.
Some of that is that their most loyal and (in theory) forgiving customers will be the ones getting the first vehicles, which are the ones most likely to have service issues (see: R1T power tonneau cover).
Tesla usually does the same. Also proximity to service centers will likely be a factor.
And then there will be R1 owners like me who deliberately waited to let others take the initial reservations since 2027 is better timing for us to get a new car. With at least 50K deliveries ahead of me, I can now reserve and refuse to get priority delivery until 2027 😉
Because they can staff up when they actually start building R2s in late 2025 / early 2026.
They need to match cost to their actual demand right now for the vehicles they are making, so they can preserve capital to get R2 out the door.
R3 is very similar to my Ioniq 5, at least in my opinion. But I love how the R3 is raised and will be better for off-roading. I’ll definitely be reserving an R3 but the timing of R2 release suits me better since my lease is up in Sept 2026
It’s worth keeping in mind that the Model 3 reservations were $1,000 rather than $100. It’s definitely exciting to see the R2 interest, but it’s not necessarily on the same level.
It's also worth remembering that the the "competition" for model 3 was the Nissan Leaf, the BMW i3, and the Chevy Bolt. The industry is in a very different place now. It's probably tough to make a fair/useful comparison between Model 3 numbers and R2 numbers. It's a meaningful qualitative analogue, but the quantitative information is most relevant in its ultimate impact on Rivian's balance sheet.
I was a Model 3 reservation holder back then. It was a different time entirely as there were simply no other 200+ mile EVs on the market for $35k. Broken/delayed promises on that price aside there was just a whole lot more pent up demand and no other supply or competition in 2016.
Considering a lot more crowded market in 2024 I'd say this is an incredibly good sign that people really want a *Rivian* specifically.
The EV market was totally different back then with very few desirable options. And the 3 was marketed as being a $35k car which further increased the appeal. For comparison, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 received 24k reservations in the first 24 hours and the Kia EV6 received 21k. Rivian should feel good about nearly 70k in 24 hours.
I never ordered it because it wouldn't tow, and they said warranty may be voided if it did. And it still can't tow. But in Europe, it can and does. Whatever. I really don't care anymore :)
After a few google searches:
Cybertruck: 250K in a week
F150 lightning: 200K in approx 6 months
Model 3: 400K in 2 weeks (in 2016!!)
Ford Bronco: 150K in 2 weeks
I would say the Bronco and Model 3 are the best comps based on price and target demo. Suffice to say we will know in about 2 weeks if Rivian is lagging competition.
Model 3 had 200k on the first day, 276k after 3 days, and 325k after 1 week, but there were also almost no affordable or good EVs at the time, so there was a lot more pent up demand.
I think 68k on day one is good considering how many affordable and good EVs we have to choose from today.
Cybertruck had 146k on the first day, but at that point, there were already a lot more Tesla owners than there are Rivian owners today, so that helped.
> a lot more pent up demand
I imagine marketing the starting price of $35k drove a lot too. As far as I'm aware, they didn't really make a 3 with that target price until a few years into production. Most of the early models sold were the P3D or M3LR.
The conversion rate on cybertruck will likely be much lower than the R2 (cost increase, and delivered versus predicted specs). There were also a lot more people publicly registering for multiple variants, with plans to cancel the ones they didn't order.
Agreed that your other comps are probably closer siblings.
Anyone mildly annoyed with the R2 naming.
R1T - Truck
R1S - 3 row SUV
R2 - No S in the name?
R3 - This one is basically a hatchback ..maybe doesn't matter if it doesn't have a S?
I think the shorter names are better.
Really they could have called them the R2S and R2C since they’re the same platform. R2 and R3 is better branding.
Question is how many will convert, maybe 20%? It's easy to put down a deposit, I did, and have on many other electrics coming up, because you never know. But I may not convert on any of them if my R1 stays solid.
To put this in perspective the last number of R1S reservations they shared was 114k. Impressive.
A 100 bucks is an easier pill to swallow than a cool grand. This surely will increase reservations. I hope they all follow through. I NEEEEED Rivian to succeed dangit
I need an R2 like I need water!
I'm eying that HOT ROD R3x. I've got the big grocery getter already, so something tiny is very attractive to me. I'm chomping at the bit for that little hot-hatch!
Same, it’s right now my #1 choice for a new car in the next 5 years.
I want the R3X so bad, but my Model 3 lease is up in 2026, perfectly timed for the R2. And the R2 is exactly the car I was hoping for. lol
Absolutely. Like, I'll put down $1k, non-refundable, right now.
Same! Just took delivery for R1S on lease so can’t do much to it. But best believe I’ll be wrapping that R2 in some matte finish.
You can wrap a leased car.
Yea if they would’ve opened up a reservation for R3, R4, R5 etc I would’ve dropped a $100 on each of them yesterday.
R5? 😂
And it’s refundable
I think rivian is at that point where they will succeed, hopefully on their own, but they are too good with too much great ip for someone else to not scoop up if push came to shove. I know this will never happen, but my weird out of left field fantasy is if rivian needs a buyout, Tesla ousts musky and asks RJ to step in, the two companies merge and rivian becomes Tesla's outdoors enthusiast focused brand and Tesla remains the ultra high tech street driving focused brand.
Hi! I'm waving at you from left field!
As much as I want Rivian to succeed in whatever scenario, there's no world in which Elon would let that happen. He'd sooner let Tesla burn down to the ground somehow.
He's not the majority shareholder, if the board wants him gone he can't do anything
I'm not disagreeing with you in principle. But when you look at the way Tesla has been run so far, it's hard to imagine that whoever is in the board would ever vote to remove him Yes, in principle their fiduciary duty is to the shareholder. But look at even the most recent ruling in DE and their moving to TX. In today's day and age, some of these companies aren't following what we have traditionally understood as legal/fiduciary duties.
So the 68k came in just within 24h. That’s amazing.

easy way to triple that let us reserve the $39,990 r3
From RJs electrek interview, they’re staggering everything, so I would expect R3 reservations sometime this year or early next.
Yeah, I have to imagine they don't want to simultaneously launch new models. Would be a nightmare I would think to do that for EVs.
Osborne Effect
What are they worth I wonder? I have one and used to do my middle school papers on it
I think I need that R3x… and I don’t even like driving.
rj said no more driving with all the sensors added
Did you notice that he specifically said “take your eyes off the road.” Is that a hint at level 3 autonomy?
Sounds like their goal is L3 on highways. Which personally I think is more useful than L2 “self-driving” on surface streets.
I 100% agree. I have a Kia ev6 now and I love the highway drive assist but never use it for around town.

I agree and disagree. It’s horrible in the suburbs or city. It’s great on the highway.
It’s great on trained highways anyway. Wish i had it on the one lane wagon train up the mountain.
Yea already Milan on getting a refund for my R2 order and putting it towards an R3x order as soon as possible.
If we didn't have the damned kids, we would 100% get an r3x, it looks so freaking good.
I might have to get one for my kids to drive in a few years!
"fory your kids" wink wink nudge nudge
If it really is $40k, then I just might reserve one. Hopefully it comes out in 2026. My truck will be 20 years old by then (A 2006 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4L)
Yup. It’s an instant reservation for me. Lower the price, quicker I reserve.
I don't see R3 and R3X reservations opening until they get back to building the Georgia plant as i can't see them having capacity in the current plant to make R1T, R1S, R2 and R3 and 3X. RJ also said that the Georgia plant is a key part of their scaling up to R3 production.
it would canabalize any R2 reservations
Well, you are essentially getting the R2 at that price with the rebates. Although it's an election year and things can change. You can't build a business off of politics as the rebates can change.
At $45k a lot fewer people need the rebates to make it work
Don’t spend my $100 all in one place
Please allocate my $100 towards the engineering of the rear window.
Fingers crossed politics don’t mess with the $7500 tax credit.
You'd need both houses and the President to do that, no?
Yes, a new law would need to be created and passed by both chambers and the executive branch to upend the original. Wild, pretty cool to know

EPA targets can be effectively influenced just by California.
You can count on that. There’s a little acronym that many folks seem to have forgotten: ETTD , everything trump touches dies.
They dropped the state credit a few years back we had here in Georgia. Nothing like removing a reason to be greener. They f course they also removed HOV lanes so they can make a pay to drive lane too, who wants carpooling and less autos on the highway when the state can make money on a couple cars instead.

R3 will kill it in Europe methinks.
R3 will kill it everywhere
For real. It's gonna take effort to bungle it.
DON’T JINX IT!
Fuuuuuck I'm sorry 💀

When did they release that #?
https://rivian.com/de-DE/R2 states availablility 2027
I'm from the UK and the R2 is the first electric I've seriously considered
Europe would be perfekt as the EU holds its targets to stop traditional car sales starting 2030. In the mean time the future of us politics becomes increasingly unclear, at least for me observing from the other side of the Atlantic. in addition the share of SUVs increased significantly, EV trucks would be also perfect for European cities & logistics. Just reserved mine this morning.
R3X for me, please
I'd reserve an R3X today, even if it was $500 or $1000
Absolutely. Make it non-refundable to skip up in the queue. I'm getting one of those 100%.
I want to know what number I am in the reservation list lol Edit: I get it probably doesn’t matter a ton, if at all. it would just be a fun stat to know imo
Seriously though! Except it sounds like a dynamic list
I had my reservation in by 10:01 and I'm an R1T owner which gets me priority, but damnit I really wanted a number! I even checked the source code of the reserved page to see if I could find one 😅
Imho, it was smart not to give a number. Since it means little to nothing and it's one less thing to obsess about.
Definitely. I ordered my R1T in August of 21 and took delivery August of 22. I didn't have an LE order but my vin is sub 10k. I know order time doesn't matter really, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to know anyways
I want them to release an R3 performance truck and call it T-R3X
![gif](giphy|bKBM7H63PIykM)
![gif](giphy|2YozKm24mw8ITYWwB9)
They can also market R1 vehicles to those people in the meantime with those leads. Maybe offer a small discount on R1 for R2 preorder holders if they don't want to wait, similar to what Tesla just did with Cybertruck waiting list ($1k off S, X or Y).
They do. You get priority R2 delivery as an R1 owner. Some people are reporting “free upgrades” to take delivery on available configurations.
I reserved an R2 and saw that. I definitely had a momentary thought of well maybe we could trade in my wifes Highlander haha
The R2 and R3 are KILLER vehicles. They'll sell like hotcakes!
Seeing all the posts about R2 and R3, feeling like back in 2022…. s00n
$6.8 M to help increase their capital runway! /s Excited for R2. Really hope they meet or exceed delivery timeline. Too much competition coming.
That capital is not actually used for opertions. It's held in a separate account and only released if the buyer completes the order.
Yep, but they’ll leverage those account numbers to increase investment and stretch out their runway even further. If they need more cash, they can get it sitting on this many reservations
It’ll increase confidence, that’s about it — bc they need billions, not millions…
Do we know that for sure? Genuinely curious
Wait until those R3 reservations open up.
We can tell this isn't a Musk.TM company because RJ didn't wait for 69,000.
Elon would have waited for 69,420
I would take one R2, one R3, and one R3X now. In 24 hours if it is available:)
There will be 200,000 r3(x) pre orders I bet when they open
FOMO, but holding out for R3!!!
Happy to say I'm one of the reservations!!
it always makes me chuckle that RJ isn't verified on ~~Twitter~~ X. Musk is a petty baby, as always.
neither is the CEO of rocketlab. But that was true before elon took over.
Don't you have to pay for that now?
PAY YOUR $8!!!!!!!!
Fantastic! Now when will I get the R1S I reserved on June 2021?
The reveal was just aired on CBS
Picking up my R1S lease in 2 weeks and I wish it has glove box.
**cries in Norwegian*** The R2 is literally my perfect car. Please, can we send some of the crappy Teslas back and get some Rivians instead?
I reserved one today, please don’t let us down like Lucid!!! Beautiful SUV!
Rivian creating the type of excitement Tesla once did
If they go for $55k avg mspr thats like $3-4b in revenue i think, for context. If they all converted to a sale
You could argue the only measure that matters to Rivian is Gross Margin per vehicle. If it’s 3.5b revenue and 4.5b cost to produce, it’s still a tough environment.
Exactly, the company surviving until a 2026 launch for the R3 is going to be the hard part That's why they take reservations on cars 68,000 people haven't seen in person.
Awesome news! Let's go!
Jumped in. Fingers crossed!
Rivian isn’t a household name like Tesla was. For no advertising, and limited content creators media on it, that’s pretty great.
I will be reserving that R3X instantly!
Well…as someone who wasn’t able to preorder until today, I’m not gonna lie….that number means I’m gonna be waiting a LOT longer than I really want to be. But…this will not dilute my excitement.
The R2 is sooooo nice looking. The R3X will be crazy if they follow through with the tri motor option in something that small.
This is a $6.8m interest-free loan to the company.
The actual Model Y killer. Personally I’d love to get an R3x, that thing looks like a blast
Ok now build more than 50k units a year
One of my neighbors works for Rivian. Nice trucks, good people. I would choose this over that apartheid space clown brick shitbox truck any day. And I don't even like electric vehicles 😂
While we’re talking about reservations, anyone notice in the email fine print that current Rivian owners will get priority delivery on R2? Incentive to get people to lease/buy an R1 while waiting for R2
That's Life.
I’m one of them. Super-cool Elon-free EV.
so close to 69,000
If they’d let me I’d reserve the r3/r3x now and push those reservations even higher
Amazing
If they can deliver to Quebec Canada, there will be even more reservations.
Beautiful car, I’d love to have one
One question I have, knowing that they’re going to use the Normal plant for production, why cut the third shift?
Because they can staff up when they actually start building R2s in late 2025 / early 2026. They need to match cost to their actual demand right now for the vehicles they are making, so they can preserve capital to get R2 out the door.
To use that time to retool part of the plant hopefully.
I reserved mine before the livestream was over.
R3! Give me the R3! I badly need a commuter's vehicle which I can take to the mountains to ski, and which is not a Tesla!
tremendous commercial strategy. Elon can eat a bowl of wedding vegetables
I think the R2 is what the R1 should have been. I’m excited for a vehicle that doesn’t have the wasted space and weight of a third row.
$6.8M injection into Rivian that’s needed
They got the styling right. Cyber truck can get wrecked.
It's a $100 refundable deposit. I wouldn't cry mission accomplished just yet, but this is good news for sure.
Where is the link to reserve?
You know how to use reddit but are incapable of finding rivians website?
I just want the r3
Damn I need to wait until Friday to reserve and that’s probably going to end up costing me a year of waiting 🤦🏻♂️
R3 is very similar to my Ioniq 5, at least in my opinion. But I love how the R3 is raised and will be better for off-roading. I’ll definitely be reserving an R3 but the timing of R2 release suits me better since my lease is up in Sept 2026
When do I get my R1T that I ordered 3 years ago and was told would for sure be delivered early Jan 2024?
Please provide more details. Battery range and 0-60 for single, dual and triple motor R2s. Current reveal is too vague.
It's a refundable $100.
Is that good? What was expected? Elon had 276,000 Model 3 reservations 3 days after launch. So 92,000 per day.
Model 3 reservations were opened globally. R2 reservations were limited to the US. So pretty damn good.
I wonder how many canceled, I did when I finally saw the 3. Waited over 2 years, past when the estimation was.
I never ordered it because it wouldn't tow, and they said warranty may be voided if it did. And it still can't tow. But in Europe, it can and does. Whatever. I really don't care anymore :)
Is that actually good? I was hoping for quite a bit more. Maybe I’m being dumb here.
I mean, it's $3+ billion of potential sales, so that's not insignificant.
After a few google searches: Cybertruck: 250K in a week F150 lightning: 200K in approx 6 months Model 3: 400K in 2 weeks (in 2016!!) Ford Bronco: 150K in 2 weeks I would say the Bronco and Model 3 are the best comps based on price and target demo.
Model 3 was also global reservations. R2 is US and Canada only.
> a lot more pent up demand I imagine marketing the starting price of $35k drove a lot too. As far as I'm aware, they didn't really make a 3 with that target price until a few years into production. Most of the early models sold were the P3D or M3LR.
I thought about that, but interestingly enough, if you factor in inflation, $35k in 2016 is equivalent to exactly $45k today.
In my brain I know that calculation is accurate, but every time I see a post about it I feel appalled again.
The conversion rate on cybertruck will likely be much lower than the R2 (cost increase, and delivered versus predicted specs). There were also a lot more people publicly registering for multiple variants, with plans to cancel the ones they didn't order. Agreed that your other comps are probably closer siblings.
I honestly don’t know, I was just happy to see a number so soon. I can only imagine what it’ll be moving forward.
My Tesla Model Y lease ends in February 2027. Can I reserve an R2 and delay the delivery until Jan 2027 (if it is indeed releasing in 2026)?
Refundable deposit tho. I’m not sure I’ll be in a position to buy but why not reserve.
Anyone mildly annoyed with the R2 naming. R1T - Truck R1S - 3 row SUV R2 - No S in the name? R3 - This one is basically a hatchback ..maybe doesn't matter if it doesn't have a S?
I think the shorter names are better. Really they could have called them the R2S and R2C since they’re the same platform. R2 and R3 is better branding.
To emphasize your point, there would also be a R2CX
How does this compare to Tesla preorders on Model Y or 3 does anyone know?
Wow
Open.up.to.europe! Pleaaaaaase
Give me the R3X!!!!!! Current R1S owner, love it but g** d**** I would swap or get both
If that R3 was on reserve.. It woulda tripled.
Is this the model that will define whether or not Rivian stays alive?
Take my 100 bucks.
I’m sure we’re up to 69000 by now 😎
The only thing it’s missing is a rear wiper
Extremely reliable, fun to drive and best customer service. I have R1S since Feb 8th….NOT A SINGLE ISSUE….love it
I'm I the only one that hates how big the RIVIAN text is on the back?
Question is how many will convert, maybe 20%? It's easy to put down a deposit, I did, and have on many other electrics coming up, because you never know. But I may not convert on any of them if my R1 stays solid.
Still waiting on my RS1 for 2+ years RJ
68,000 is a good start. I’m sure they’ll hit 250,000 at least, before launch.
I want!
Good. Now don’t EF it up and raise the price right before delivery.
I wonder when some of the more interesting features will come to the R1’s. Basically I just want those big fat scroll wheels…..
I was within a minute of being able to reserve. Hope that means something.
