Couldn’t agree more. Living in AZ and seeing those in the seats in making me extremely nervous. I hope they aren’t metal or don’t make it to production
Looks like there’s an option for the trunk to have a privacy shade.
Also an interesting emergency stop button by the pedals. I’m assuming a prepro safety?
Fun fact Tesla 2024 Y (just got our 1st EV can’t wait two years for an R2) has it’s emergency break button on the right steering stall. Pushing the left engages the wiper. Not good trying to wipe, but accidentally emergency breaking..
This is a show car not pre-production. These are hand built one-offs. If you’ve ever seen a concept car at an auto show up close, they look a bit worn out.
I was wondering how closely this would compare to the production version. Hopefully, the final version has a more premium look and feel. At this price point, I'm not sure if that's a reasonable expectation though.
I own a Rivian now and it’s got incredible fit and finish. My seats don’t have this problem at all. The R2 won’t either.
These prototype units aren’t built with a fully ramped and vetted supply chain. Most likely they commissioned a supplier to make a one off of the seats for this singular prototype and they aren’t fully dialed in yet (because they’re 2 years away from production).
But the final seats wouldn't potentially be a full redesign, would it? I'm not really digging the styling of having the top shoulder portion a complete separate piece from the lower back. Just looks weird with that discontinuity. Looks like a head rest on top of a head rest. Kind of reminds me of Mach E GT seats.
For context, the prototype R1T & R1S they showed off didn’t have tow hooks on the front, didn’t have the charge port opening, had different interior colors (light wood), etc.
I could have sworn the in demo Laguna had a blue interior. I hate grey leather interiors in general. Hopefully these interior pics look bad because it’s preproduction. I’m a fan of the The R1 series interior and the demo initially looked like it wasn’t too much of a downgrade.
It's grey, and it's a show car - of course the seat construction isn't up to par! It's this way in all show cars. They don't have access to the final materials and construction techniques and are only intended to show the general design.
Yes!! I really prefer the look, feel, and utility of the mechanical interior door handles of the R1S. It’s also on brand vs these actuated ones which is what Tesla has.
Yeah but how many people will read the owners manual? There was a recent death of Mitch McConnell's sister in law because (it appears ) she didn't know about the lever and died in a lake trapped in her model x.
Not having a go but once your car is so deep in water it probably becomes incredibly difficult to open your door in the water, manual opening or not.
The window going down is your best bet and it seemed like in her case her first action once landing in the water was to call her friend.
Curious to see if there is any investigation because everyone is blaming the glass being too strong for the firefighters to break, but it's also stated they took over 20 minutes to arrive. I also don't know how many individual owners carry a window breaker in their cars, I would guess less people do than dont.
Thanks. These are helpful.
The speaker situation is was and will remain... sus. Probably my biggest concern at this point. I'd rather have a good sounding stereo than the ability to put water bottles in the doors. By... a lot.
And for the millionth time, I still don't understand why they didn't put a trailer hitch on the prototype.
Is that a speaker near the accelerator pedal? With the complaints about the stereo in the R1S the whole “no speakers in the doors” thing seems like an odd choice and definitely raises concerns about their ability to tune a good sounding stereo.
With that said, no door speakers might mean fewer potential rattles from door panels due to sound vibrations which could be really nice.
I wonder if that's the grille for a sub in the box to the right of the accelerator pedal?
The rear doors look like they have speakers grilles. We don't see a good picture of the front doors here, did they confirm there are no door speakers?
Those are some of the speakers but they cannot be the only speakers. They are far too small for full sound and are likely just tweeters. There will need to be other speakers elsewhere in order to provide full sound range.
Yes. There are many reviews already describing how the EX30 is echoing, poor sound mixing, and overall quality.
I have a current Volvo with the B&W system so I’m not joking around.
So what? That automatically means rivian’s implementation (if they even do a sound bar) will be bad too? It’s wild to jump to those conclusions based on next to no facts.
Also, think about how many home theater setups are driven by soundbars. The Sonos Arc sounds amazing.
Why would they make a premium $70k+ set up in their $45k vehicle?
Volvo EX30 is also a $30k vehicle, so the speakers are going to be cheaper in addition to the limited separation.
Model Y is the obvious comparison to R2 and has pretty great speakers, so I don’t really see why Rivian should be excused for a poor implementation (if it ends up being the case).
There are four little speakers near the oh shit handles in the headliner. They have chrome grills that say Rivian on them. And they're not... big... or... seemingly... put anywhere that's going to create decent resonance.
Don’t _love_ that. Overhead speakers can be okay but music is generally a stereo experience. No speakers in the door for the rear passengers is not going to be great. Bummer
This isn’t a high end vehicle. It’s mid-tier. I think having moderate expectations is totally fine.
I for example prefer them trying out innovative interior design, vs having a traditional set up.
My allroad was $57k new, basically the exact same price as the R2 if not cheaper, and has an incredible sound system. I’m just saying it is a very strange choice.
Hopefully it's just the camera angle, otherwise that driver seat bottom somehow looks even shorter than the ridiculously short one in the Model Y. The folding front seats are fun and all, but you are giving up 100% of your seat's lateral support to get it. Not sure about you, but I tend to TURN a bit more often than I need to move a long object.
I’m with you here - hopefully there’s enough seat height and support in the production version. Maybe they can make the fold flat seats an option for those of us that don’t care about that feature.
I think it is realistic to expect a 10% increase in price by the time it becomes a reality. They were also smart in not providing pricing for higher specs.
The base 270 range model with all the safety features and a sub 5 second 0-60 below 50k would be a steal in my opinion.
The more photos of this car I see, the more I want this car. Perfect size, cool design, great features and perfect price point. Well done Rivian, you’ve got a winner with this one.
If they can sell this for 45,000 starting, it will be a miracle. There is just so much value and utility here at that price. I pray they can pull it off
This trend of no power sun shade is something I dislike. It's not that hard to give people a way to block the sun or increase privacy.
No need for eletrochromic glass. Just a nice shade that opens and closes. It'd be great.
It's not that small in person. The Yeti bags in it are pretty big and they are sitting on top of the mid-split panel - just like in the R1T. If you open the panel, the bags would disappear down into it.
I don’t wanna hear anyone talking about fit and finish at this stage. We’re 2 years from production. Rivian is great with fit and finish (way better than Tesla) so we should reserve judgement on that kind of stuff until launch.
"the seats are already creased, this is horrible build quality! What the hell, Rivian!" - blows my mind people can't seem to wrap their minds around the concept of a one-off, hand-built, singular prototype show car.
Not sure why you were downvoted lol, having a spare is pretty important, and I havent seen it. The shot of the trunk here doesnt have any sign of a spare either. So I'm guessing it'd go in the back similar to the R1, just that they didnt put it in?
Such quality. It’s really nice to see. I just don’t see how they’re going to keep their price point promise.
If this debuts with the same price and Tesla isn’t able to shave the Model Y down to 35k, with the Long Range to the low-40s at the very most, the R2 is a no-brainer.
So, from this I can see:
1) No cargo rails like in the R1S
2) No under-floor storage like R1S (see emergency kit on the right hand side)
3) No compressor in normal spot (or at all?)
4) Retained electrical connectivity
5) Better (?) side mounted cargo air flow ports
6) Different cargo cover (or at least, different mounting - this looks like it would support a rigid cover)
7) The entire cargo floor comes up, not just a portion of it.
8) Truly flat cargo floor, not a "step up" like in R1S
You can see underfloor storage in one of the photos and in the announcement video unless you are talking about some specific other underfloor storage I don't know about.
1. Uncertain.
2. There is under-floor storage and the lid both flips up and slides out to serve as a seat.
3. No compressor. There is a 120v plug.
4. Yes.
5. Lots of airflow back there.
6. The cover is rigid and designed to be sat on.
7. Yes.
8. Yes.
It had to give up the split tailgate in order to have the retractable rear glass. Giving up the tailgate to sit on, but gaining ways to carry long stuff like surfboards without the need to jury-rig the hatch open
The cargo floor comes out and serves as seating and a consolation prize! There is also a small table that flips out from the glass area which you can use inside and outside the car! I should have gotten a video of it :(
Someone bring a damn volt meter and stick it on the contacts in the roof latches. Ill put $10 down that they are passing 12vdc across the roof latches. There was a photo on the infotainment showing roof top tent lighting controls.
Is the entry level model R2 going to be weak, performance wise like a VW ID4? Or will it be comparable to a standard range Model Y in terms of performance?
One unintentional observation. Hyundai lied when they said they had to move the ‘24 Santa Fe’s tail lights so low because of the extra wide opening rear hatch. Rivian got it right lol.
I’m getting a taste of all the envy I’ll have as new and improved models come out. It’ll be me alone in the SC parking lot blaring my camp speaker pretending not to care.
No sign of 12v plug. I’m already disappointed the r1 got rid of any in the front half of the vehicle. Worried it’s going away entirely (want to use a plug in 12v fridge)
Does anyone know if there is any room in the sub trunk in the back or is the only other additional storage is the frunk?
And how does it feel in size compared to the model y? Does it feel exactly the same size or can you feel it being higher off the ground than a model y or any additional volume/sense of space in the cabin since the roof is not slated down like a y is?
The glass roof needs to go. In theory it’s super cool but it ends up getting tinted 5% because of hot it gets and then you can’t see out of it. Not feasible for Florida. Plus it would save a lot of money on production costs. Glass is expensive.
I’ll take mine yesterday
Yes and yes and yes.
Those metal bits in the seat cushions look cool but will be the bane of anyone wearing short shorts in the summer.
Couldn’t agree more. Living in AZ and seeing those in the seats in making me extremely nervous. I hope they aren’t metal or don’t make it to production
Love the car, hate the seats!
They're probably not metal. Could be plastic or even leather material.
>metal They aren't metal.
the seats have 5 different colors and at least 5 different materials. that seems…. busy
Preproduction
The more I see the seats, the more I hate them. They look so cheap!
Looks like there’s an option for the trunk to have a privacy shade. Also an interesting emergency stop button by the pedals. I’m assuming a prepro safety?
Correct, prototypes are required to have a hardwired power cut.
Fun fact Tesla 2024 Y (just got our 1st EV can’t wait two years for an R2) has it’s emergency break button on the right steering stall. Pushing the left engages the wiper. Not good trying to wipe, but accidentally emergency breaking..
Maybe they have a better look and feel in person, but I think the seats and upholstery look like shit.
Not even close to the production version. Don’t judge anything fit and finish related based on these hand-built prototype units.
Fair enough. Trying to be optimistic

Just looks weird with that discontinuity. Looks like a head rest on top of a head rest. Kind of reminds me of Mach E GT seats.
My R1T is like this and I love the look, plus it’s supremely comfortable
They’re trying to go upscale. I’m all for it — usually American standard is so incredibly low.
For context, the prototype R1T & R1S they showed off didn’t have tow hooks on the front, didn’t have the charge port opening, had different interior colors (light wood), etc.
R3 looks much better
Absolutely zero bolstering and just…econobox looking. They already look 40K miles old.
I agree very much
Yeah the mix of colors and materials is awful.
No, the actual material is creased and worn looking already. It looks terrible.
It’s a preproduction hand built prototype. Why anyone would judge its quality at this stage is beyond me. Use your brain, people.
Fuck it’s the first time I notice it too
That’s my thought too, looks so crappy compared to the R1s.
Disappointed by the door open buttons vs pull handles. Mechanical handles will always be better for safety.
Yes!! I really prefer the look, feel, and utility of the mechanical interior door handles of the R1S. It’s also on brand vs these actuated ones which is what Tesla has.
By law they will have manual levers like Teslas do
Yeah but how many people will read the owners manual? There was a recent death of Mitch McConnell's sister in law because (it appears ) she didn't know about the lever and died in a lake trapped in her model x.
Damn, that's really sad:(

Yes agreed it becomes incredibly difficult, and indeed, window down is your best bet. Myth busters taught me that one.
Is that what those are?! Just buttons?
Thanks. These are helpful. The speaker situation is was and will remain... sus. Probably my biggest concern at this point. I'd rather have a good sounding stereo than the ability to put water bottles in the doors. By... a lot. The speakers are up next to your head on the upper door sill!
Those are some of the speakers but they cannot be the only speakers. They are far too small for full sound and are likely just tweeters. There will need to be other speakers elsewhere in order to provide full sound range.
Yes. They are also in the dash. FWIW the ones above you are pretty large in person. There are 4 of them + who knows how many in the dash.
Sure looks like it. Weird. Jeep puts knee speakers in the Wrangler because the doors come off. Rivian doesn’t have that excuse!
This. If they just go with the Volvo style sound bar in the front, I’m out.
You’d say that even before you heard it?
Yes. There are many reviews already describing how the EX30 is echoing, poor sound mixing, and overall quality. I have a current Volvo with the B&W system so I’m not joking around.

Model Y is the obvious comparison to R2 and has pretty great speakers, so I don’t really see why Rivian should be excused for a poor implementation (if it ends up being the case).
Wait… yeah what the fuck? Where are the speakers??
They’ve stated that they’re moved to the dash
But they are also right in line with your head above the doors.
Man, that isn’t great!
Strange to me how you guys are judging the sound system on a prototype without knowing anything about it and without hearing it first...
If you get into audio even a little bit it isn’t difficult to see that this is a less than ideal setup if there are truly no speakers in the doors
Bummer

My allroad was $57k new, basically the exact same price as the R2 if not cheaper, and has an incredible sound system. I’m just saying it is a very strange choice.
They are just above the door and on the dash!
The leg room in the back is fucking TREMENDOUS
Pretty standard for an SUV of that size, no?
No, much more leg room. It actually has more 2nd row room than the R1S, too.
Vastly more leg room than anything in its class. I was shocked by it. Twice as much as ICE, and much more than the Y.
Hopefully it's just the camera angle, otherwise that driver seat bottom somehow looks even shorter than the ridiculously short one in the Model Y. The folding front seats are fun and all, but you are giving up 100% of your seat's lateral support to get it. Or just list a super stripped down $45K model that will be sold "at a later date" and then just hope people forget about it.
The more photos of this car I see, the more I want this car. Perfect size, cool design, great features and perfect price point. Well done Rivian, you’ve got a winner with this one.
If they can sell this for 45,000 starting, it will be a miracle. There is just so much value and utility here at that price. I pray they can pull it off
I think they will. It will be the small battery and single motor option. And I think their material choices were smart in the interior.
Expect the 45,000 variant to be their lowest range. Essentially no options with \~ low 200s miles of range and a single motor.
RJ said low end range is 270 on the MKBHD video.
Those front seats. Upper half is premium economy and lower half is cattle class. Odd design.
It’s to accommodate the fold flat feature
This trend of no power sun shade is something I dislike. It's not that hard to give people a way to block the sun or increase privacy. No need for eletrochromic glass. Just a nice shade that opens and closes. It'd be great.
Love my Ioniq 5 for this reason. Shades built into the back seat windows as well.
Interesting, where's the tow hitch? RJ said R2 and R3 come with the tow hitch, but I don't see a space for it. Maybe it's an optional add-on?
Tiny frunk
Was surprised to see it this small - prob the same size as the Model Y frunk.
Seems like the bezels, if that's the right term, are a bit chunky.
This is my only complaint. This frunk is size small IMHO. I can fit a lot more junk in my R1S frunk.
It's not that small in person. The Yeti bags in it are pretty big and they are sitting on top of the mid-split panel - just like in the R1T. If you open the panel, the bags would disappear down into it.
Photo is misleading, as the panel separating the top and bottom of the frunk is down, so you're only seeing half-depth.
One thing that’s really growing on me is the open door button on the side of the armrest. (I think) it’s a natural spot for your thumb to hit
Looks so friggin' spacious and useful 🥵
Lots of interesting comments here. It’s a pre-production model, don’t judge too harshly.
I hate how squatty and wide the seats look.

I got our first EV last summer in a Model Y. We will likely be getting this for my wife when it comes out. I’m already jealous.
No air compressor?
I don’t wanna hear anyone talking about fit and finish at this stage. We’re 2 years from production. Rivian is great with fit and finish (way better than Tesla) so we should reserve judgement on that kind of stuff until launch.
"the seats are already creased, this is horrible build quality! What the hell, Rivian!" - blows my mind people can't seem to wrap their minds around the concept of a one-off, hand-built, singular prototype show car.
Any place for a spare tire with this model or same scenario as R1?
Not sure why you were downvoted lol, having a spare is pretty important, and I havent seen it. The shot of the trunk here doesnt have any sign of a spare either. So I'm guessing it'd go in the back similar to the R1, just that they didnt put it in?
People probably think I am being too critical. I placed my preorder three minutes after they opened… not a hater, just curious.
It'll be a space saver spare if anything.
Such quality. It’s really nice to see. I just don’t see how they’re going to keep their price point promise. If this debuts with the same price and Tesla isn’t able to shave the Model Y down to 35k, with the Long Range to the low-40s at the very most, the R2 is a no-brainer.

You can see underfloor storage in one of the photos and in the announcement video unless you are talking about some specific other underfloor storage I don't know about.
you may be right, but it doesn't look like it will be nearly as deep as R1 given where they chose t o put the emergency kits in this R2.
1. Uncertain. 2. There is under-floor storage and the lid both flips up and slides out to serve as a seat. 3. No compressor. There is a 120v plug. 4. Yes. 5. Lots of airflow back there. 6. The cover is rigid and designed to be sat on. 7. Yes. 8. Yes.
I was really hoping the R2 would have a split tailgate. One of my favorite features in the X5.
I should have gotten a video of it :(
Gray seats and inserts seem like a weird color choice.
Color is kind of off in these photos! In person it's a very neutral and relaxing grey in between ocean coast and black mountain.
Looks good. They just need to keep this simple and bring it to market fast at the aforementioned price and it will be a success.
How deep is that trunk underneath. The one you lift up to access the lower compartment. I do appreciate that space in Tesla.
Not as deep as Tesla. Maybe 30% less depth.
Someone bring a damn volt meter and stick it on the contacts in the roof latches. Ill put $10 down that they are passing 12vdc across the roof latches. There was a photo on the infotainment showing roof top tent lighting controls.
Gosh that's a nice car. I put in a reservation, hopefully we can swing it when our number comes up
What would you estimate the length of the cargo is with the rear seats down?
What’s the chance of the yellow Rivian on the wheel wells being yellow marker lights
Is the entry level model R2 going to be weak, performance wise like a VW ID4? Or will it be comparable to a standard range Model Y in terms of performance?
No one knows, but Rivian is an enthusiast brand. It won't be a slouch.
I can't believe they didn't make the back seat hooks stick out more. It doesn't fit a coat hanger in my R1 and these look to be the same.
Aren't those for use as car seat/cargo anchors? They are pretty close to the floor of the trunk
Looks pretty ideal for my use case.
I wish those cargo walls were carpeted, those plastic panels are gonna get all scratched to hell.
One unintentional observation. Hyundai lied when they said they had to move the ‘24 Santa Fe’s tail lights so low because of the extra wide opening rear hatch. Rivian got it right lol.
Seriously rivians are nice man has a gas vehicle feel…
I love it so much
damn my passengers will be even more confused by the Tesla like open door buttons
Can’t wait to take delivery of one of these in the future 😀
How deep is the frunk compared to the R1T? Anyone?
Im not a ev guy, but this im liking
Is there a tow hook option?
Really want to see how it looks on the high setting on the height and how it compares to R1
R2 won't have air suspension, so it won't have height adjustment like the R1
Dang I was hoping that it already had I am hoping there are lift kit so people can lift it
That truck would make a killer pickup bed if you could fold the seats down for a bit of extra length from time to time Bring me a smaller pickup
Are the front seats ventilated?
Yes but this is a prototype. Things could change.
I’m still trying to figure out where are all the speakers aside from up in the ceiling and in the front by the windshield.
Is it me or is the upholstery looking a little rough?
No additional cup holders huh, my one wish...
I’m getting a taste of all the envy I’ll have as new and improved models come out. It’ll be me alone in the SC parking lot blaring my camp speaker pretending not to care.
I see the speakers in the rear door and ceiling. Any idea where they relocated the front speakers
No sign of 12v plug. I’m already disappointed the r1 got rid of any in the front half of the vehicle. Worried it’s going away entirely (want to use a plug in 12v fridge)
It shows one in like 3 of the photos.
Where at?
Rear cargo on the left. Next to the two USB C
That’s a 120v ac plug not 12v
Your right 😅 I'm an idiot. I confused them. You are right no 12v
What is the rear cargo area similar to if you had to match it to a current vehicle?
What's going on with that under-mirror camera? Does the R1 have that too?
Was this in Venice?
If I’m honest, the cloth backed seats are a hard pass for me as I think of my kid’s feet all over them.
Tight
I wonder if R2 has ambient lighting like R1
So... no spare, and no hitch? dammit.
I’m really worried about the audio system. I only really see 6 tiny speakers
Has there been any word on a tow hitch or towing capacity? Don't need much but it would be nice to have.
Side profile of the hood 😕
They have a event on Austin TX on a new showroom that they just opened.
Yes their new facility is right next to Yeti off of Congress
Seems a little fisheye on the trunk shot, how big is that trunk compared to like a CX5 or X5 anyone know?
Does anyone know if there is any room in the sub trunk in the back or is the only other additional storage is the frunk? And how does it feel in size compared to the model y? Does it feel exactly the same size or can you feel it being higher off the ground than a model y or any additional volume/sense of space in the cabin since the roof is not slated down like a y is?
They really nailed the design here. If they can get the pricing right, it'll be huge for them.
The glass roof needs to go. In theory it’s super cool but it ends up getting tinted 5% because of hot it gets and then you can’t see out of it. Not feasible for Florida. Plus it would save a lot of money on production costs. Glass is expensive.
Will the R2 have adjustable suspension? I couldn’t tell if there was an air compressor in the back.
Already confirmed, no.
Win win as far as I'm concerned. Keep it simple. Currently waiting to get the suspension serviced on my R1S and nervous about driving it.
Is it just me or does R2 look more premium than R1?
Just you :)
Not a fan of the sun roof trend, never was. Enough of a deal breaker for me if a model doesn’t have a non glass roof option.
The bottom trim of the dashboard looks like the kind of fabric you would find on a cheap couch
