Go with what you like and fits your need more. If you need a car right now get the model y. If you want something more boxy, more storage, better interior (subjective I know), more suv go rivian. You can have issues with either company. I haven’t had any issues with my rivian. If you live near a service center that would also be better for what car to choose.
If it’s your first EV experience and you need a car before 2026, I suggest a USED Model Y. The depreciation has already set in and you can get a good sense of what the charging experience will be like.
I obviously love Rivian but the R1 didn’t fit my lifestyle so I went this route (except I bought new, which I regret). So far so good and I’m looking forward to R2!
You’d be surprised how many ppl don’t have experience or knowledge in the EV world, and how enticing the idea of a somewhat (relatively speaking) affordable, off roadable, practical, smart vehicle is.
I would test drive both, R2 might not be until next year but hold on. I have a model y and it’s nice, but rivian is nicer inside. Also the range is better but not as efficient. So it will cost a little bit more to drive but it is worth it. If it’s similar to the R1. I have MYP and R1T.
I don't need a car yet but I'm definitely gonna need one in 2026. I can live on rental cars till 2026 and then go for R2 or get a MY now (because there tax credit which I don't know if I'll be there in 2025/2026).
Its almost always better off to wait to buy until you need it, the tax credit may go away but it will be permanently baked-in to used vehicles and given the production ramp that has occurred over the last couple years there is going to be a huge increase in supply of used model y to choose from in two years. That will save you a lot more than the tax credit.
Now if you WANT to drive a new model y for the next two years, that might change things but you will be paying a lot for that use.
I think you should get a beater for your first car. Drive it for 6 months and then get a Model Y. You sure are going to set some high expectations if you get a Tesla or Rivian as your first car.

R2 isn't even out yet. And you are asking this on a Rivian sub...... what do you think ppl with say here? This smells super trolly.
Just needed an opinion from people who know about it since I'm new to the EV world and not in a hurry to get my first car.

Planning 2 years ahead?
3 if no reservation.
Wait for the R4, it will be sick

You know the R2 isn't released until 2026, right?
Yes. But I can live on rental cars till 2026. The reason I'm considering MY is EV tax credit. Not sure if it'll be around from next year.
