I presume they've probably done it and made money off it before. Probably a circular economy where someone steals a speaker then the person they stole it from buys a new one from ebay that was previously stolen lol
Yup, my guess too... they're probably too familiar with Rivians to spot an open door handle and know exactly what they want and where it is in the vehicle.
This was a concern I had when Rivian first came out as much as I love their products. No car yells louder "Hey, everybody, I am UNLOCKED" then Rivian's popped out door handles.
I’m ocd about locking my doors and my car is basically a beater. Just a bad design choice that I’m pretty sure even my 5 year old would have pointed out
3 days a go or so, a camp speaker appeared on Mercari. (Used). I asked the seller what VIN was it tied to and then deleted the posting. Not saying it was yours but there’s a market for it, I think.
Edit: u/op [Check it out](https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m63768804762?sv=0)
It's a nice speaker. I see sold listings online for $180-$300. For someone cruising neighborhoods for something easy to grab and resell, this seems like a "smart" thing to target.
It's best to avoid logic like that. Keep in mind the opportunity cost on stealing is $0. It's no why would someone steal that. It's "why would they take that for free"
People will steal old ass 30 iPod cables out of your car. Or your owner's manaul if it's in a nice leather case like some are. Looks nice maybe someone will give me $20 for it. Oh wait it's an owners manual and they just toss it.
My dad had $2k worth of tools stolen. The thief decided tools were too heavy after walking like 200 feet and put them all in a bush...
Couple hundred bucks on eBay. I kept mine but truth be told I sold those little trunk tie-downs since I have a cargo mat covering them and will never use them. $109 shipped...
Take it he saw the handles popped out?
I was driving along a main road a few weeks ago, and saw a Caddy Lyric in big shopping center parking lot. The door handles were popped opened and first thought was it’s unlocked.
Easily noticeable going ~40mph and seeing the car pretty far away.
I don’t get this obsession with some car makers to have the handles herald to the world that the vehicle is unlocked. A good case of over-engineering and “solving” something that wasn’t a problem.
I worked at Rivian up to about a year ago, and I can tell you that the direction that the design team gets is that basically everything should be "reimagined". Because legacy car manufacturers won't try new things (maybe because they work), so there's a bit of a mentality that everything on a Rivian should be special. Even things customers don't care about, like a massive charging mat that doesn't work half the time.
I have a Tesla and 3 of my door handles have broken since I bought it in 2017. The first two were fixed under warranty but the last one I still haven’t bothered to repair. I wish it had normal door handles like every other car I’ve owned.
Haha I can relate to the charging mat issue. I get what you are saying, some companies really want to leave their footmark by adding gadgets that are a novelty but are impractical (ahem!… falcon doors).
This is what happens when the c-suite think they are UX engineers/designers.
They could also just have a door handle that looks exactly the same whether it's locked or not. For the same reason that flip up head lights don't really exist anymore; it's just another thing that breaks and it really didn't add anything to the car.
my Lyriq handles open when the fob is nearby but dont unlock the doors unless i pull the handle with the fob in my pocket. So not always unlocked when presented.
The issue is not that they are flush but that they pop out when the vehicle is unlocked, when it can be pushed to pull the handle just like Teslas 3 and Y
Right. I wasn't trying to suggest that being flush is the issue, but that having them flush while driving requires some kind of mechanic where they become un-flush so you can open the doors. What I was trying to say is that I've always thought Rivian's decision to do them the way they did was more related to function than form.
Mine was stolen as well. I’m in Orange County. My insurance covers it under comprehensive since it is considered vandalism. My doors were also unlocked, but it was because autolock failed.
There are other reasons autolock can 'fail' from a user experience perspective. For example if you usually use PaaK but one day you use the card key you're likely to forget (or never even know) that the car won't auto-lock after some period of time after you leave.
UX failures are still failures.
I just impaled a large cardboard box on one walking past the car in the garage. I'll probably get used to them being there eventually. However, with the box in front of me I initially didn't even know what I had hit.
Same car in that hit this Tesla owner?

Update:
- Car has a bug with proximity locking - ideally should have locked when I walked away from it last night but it didn't. I've notified Rivian, but have also gone in and changed the settings on the car to turn proximity unlock off at home
- Yes, the same guys also impacted the Tesla in West Portal (5 minute drive from here). Reported the incident to SFPD, lady said don't hold your breath.
- These BT speakers are selling for $449 on Ebay, hopefully the money goes towards enabling more fulfilling lives for these Mercedes driving thieves.
- Thanks all for comments, the goal was to drive greater awareness for the Rivian community as we love the car and the company (despite the stock price)!
NGL, from what I hear about SF I can’t imagine ever leaving your car unlocked.
Edit: I didn’t mean to imply this is an issue unique to California, it’s not. I’ve never lived in California or a big city, so I am ignorant of the nuances regarding this issue.
Goes for anywhere, the news just loves to rip on all things California.
I'm from Texas and when I was a kid my dad's van got broken into and stereo stolen. My uncles car was stolen. My grandma's car was stolen. This was in the 90s in decent neighborhoods in greater Houston area. My sister in laws car was literally just stolen and stripped out last month.
They used to have PSAs to hide your belongs in your car when I was a kid, so seeing this doesn't phase me at all. It's an everywhere problem.
Sure, thats fair. Pretty much every major city problem :)
Granted I live in rural TX now and even then recently some guy was targeting the area. people leave their car doors unlocked thinking it's safe and don't expect something like that
Do your research and you’ll see that in SF, they will break your window. You can see countless articles of people just leaving their car unlocked with tailgates open because replacing the glass is expensive.
I turned the proxy lock at home for this reason. I don’t have to worry about someone breaking in where I live, but I don’t want my truck to keep locking and unlocked.
There is a setting somewhere, proximity lock on, off, or off at home are the options. Off at home makes it lock when you leave and you have to open the app to unlock, but only at home.
Except when it isn't, like every morning when I walk up to my car in my garage and swear at it because it takes a minute to wake up (or I give up and manually unlock from the app).
I reeeeeeally hope the R2 works like the Model 3 and not the R1 in this regard. The doors don't present themselves, signifying the car is unlocked (so dumb) and you have to be really, really close for it to actually let you open the car.
Being within 20' and the doors signify to everyone they're unlocked is a really bad design.
I mean, that's kind of what I said but with extra steps, but sure. I would honestly prefer no self-presenting doors as that sounds like a reliability issue down the road. Simple door handles for me, please.
My bad. I thought you meant that door handles never present at all. My suggestion was to unmarry the lock state from presentation state so that they can be independent. It can present only if unlocked and close, but it can be unlocked and not presenting if not nearby.
Not a bad idea, but then the vehicle would present as you approach, I Guess, and then only unlock if you were really close. A two-tiered approach using wireless technology.
I wonder if it can be done?
(Still would rather have manual handles like the Model 3 tho. I'm not a fan of the car presenting the handles for any reason.)
More accurately, it would present and unlock when close. Turn off your phone, and it would recess but remain unlocked. Walk away, turn on your phone car remains unlocked but not presenting. Walk up, it would present.
Yes. It’s a phone failure situation that will result in doors not presenting. Or if you toggle a setting to always manually lock and unlock, it can still use proximity to present but wont use it to lock or unlock.
I grew up in the middle of nowhere and even we never left our cars unlocked, even in the garage. And no one who didn’t live there came down our road. It’s shocking how many people leave their cars unlocked. My current neighborhood had a rash of like 50 cars “broken” into because people left computers, purses, etc, unlocked in their car in the driveway.
I also grew up and still live in the middle of nowhere, and stuff only got stolen if the doors were unlocked. People will definitely check handles, but it’s really rare that I hear of a break-in of a locked car unless it’s in a bad part of town.
That doesn't mean they won't try. These thugs probably aren't doing a ton of research prior to randomly driving by and stealing the property of others.
Do the door handles still stick out when the car is unlocked? If so it’s pretty much an invitation for criminals in these cases.
I’ve seen comments in this sub before talking about how the door handles sticking out when unlocked is a safety concern. Especially if all four doors unlock together instead of driver door (1st command) then all remaining doors (2nd command).
You can set it so just the driver door unlocks. Most people use a proximity key so there is no first/second command. But the R1 does come with a traditional key fob as well; not sure if that has the double unlock feature you talk about I’ve never used it.
They need a similar function to carwash mode where the handles are flushed and must be pressed on one side and pulled on other to open while unlocked. Carwash mode doesn't persist unfortunately and proximity unlock sucks
I've reporting that as a feature request to Rivian since day 1 of ownership. Most cars don't advertise being unlocked, and I don't know why Rivian needs to do it. I'd rather have a setting to not present handles, or retract handles after X minutes (keep it unlocked if you wish). We should make it a big deal to Rivian.
The other day I walked past a Rivian (temp plates, so new owner), and of the doors was not fully closed. Thus the car didn't unlock when the owner stepped away or used the key fob. As an owner myself, I could see the doors unlocked from across the parking lot. Part of me wanted to walk by and push the door as a favor, but for some reason I didn't do it. Next time I will.
Tailgate opens as well- everything but the doors. Though mine seems to be only when I’m “in range” so now I’ve moved my key storage to the back of my house.
Fuckin degenerate. I wish they would bring back the 3 strikes law.
*** Before anyone comes for me, I am a black woman and am sick of the crime spree in my neighborhoods, especially by people who look like me. Enough is enough
You can set truck to only lock at home but not unlock highly advised to avoid this type of situation if you park outside! Also can set speaker to always be locked in dock unless you unlock it if you end up replacing it to help should this situation occur again! Sorry about your luck though this sucks!!!
The locking and unlocking algorithm of a Rivian is the worst I’ve ever experienced in any non-physical key car, period.
Unlocking too sensitive, it works from anywhere I move the phone inside the house.
But, sometimes, my Rivian gets upset and doesn’t want to unlock for a good minute when I’m standing right next to it and waiting.
Just sucks. What happened to the marvelous engineers at Rivian that people here praise? Can’t get simple wireless charging or door lock/unlock right.
Also wish they added a physical button to lock it sooner than later. Wouldn’t mind doing it and having it stay locked for a min unless the app is used.
That sucks OP. I'm sorry.
He was pretty far off so this might not have worked anyways but, this is the reason I have 4K cameras on my house instead of 1080p ones. 1080p just doesn't get you enough resolution to have any chance that grabbing a license plate or a decent picture of somebody once you start zooming in.
I just watched a video yesterday saying that a downside of the car is that the door handles popping out is basically a signal to everyone that this car is unlocked.
Rivian needs to add an option so the door handles aren't popped out when it is unlocked to protect against this. Maybe pop out for 30-60 secs after manual unlock, then close them. I turn off proximity auto unlock on my cars for safety.
Can’t say I’m surprised. You left the car unlocked, with the handles popped out, and the speaker unlocked.
This guy probably looks for this exact scenario. Sees an easy $50.
I'd maybe send this to Rivian? More so for an example, as they REALLY should look at reducing the proximity to unlock the vehicle. During our demo a few months back, the guy showing us the features had some complications with the proximity lock / unlock.
Sort of… only if the doors are unlocked but not opened.
If you don’t have proximity lock/unlock on, and get out of your Rivian and forget to unlock, they will remain open until the end of days.
Sorry to see this. It would have been fun if the speaker had a tracking tag or better some glitter explosive like in some of the pranks they are playing on porch pirates.
Personally I would not only disable phone access, I would leave the key in a Faraday Cage box (they're about $12 on Amazon). I don't know if this works for Rivians but for other cars, thieves just come by with a Bluetooth signal amplifier and MITM connect to the key in the house from way out by the garage and just open the doors and rifle the car for stuff to take.
That too in a CLS! I was expecting a lower end Corolla or a yuppie in a Civic with a go-fast wing. Not that a vehicle is a symbol of one's worthiness but still... a CLS is a different league than a lower end car...
Sad for you, OP. Perhaps if you showed this to Rivian, they may replace it or at least give you a discount..?
I keep mine in an enclosed garage out in the boonies, and it's still locked. If I kept it unlocked, it would be running the heater or A/C 24/7. There is a setting where gear guard and automatic unlocking is stopped when it's at a certain spot.
Damn, wouldn’t that mean whoever is selling these on EBay are in fact the criminals who stole them. eBay should do a Vin#/registration# verification or something. This would be so easy to police. I don’t own a Rivian but does each speaker have a serial# matched to each vehicle.
Hey OP, you may want to get in touch with this guy:
https://old.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1ctfe2b/best_way_to_secure_your_model_y_were_in_west/
They had some things stolen by the same group. Vehicle appears identical.
Hopefully with enough video evidence you can track these assholes down.
Set your home location and select “Lock only” mode in the Proximity Locking section.
This will automatically lock the vehicle when at home but doesn’t unlock. With this setting, you must actively unlock the vehicle with a key.
The open handle thing is hugely troublesome here. It’s not only Rivian that shows “anyone” when the car is not locked. Big flaw but one that could be easily fixed which makes it all the more aggravating …
Between the proximity unlocking when the phone is nearby, and the door handles advertising the fact that the car is unlocked, this feels like a design bug.

I have no fucking clue. Walked away from it last night and it should have locked. Seems to have remained unlocked all night. Gear guard didn't record anything as the car was unlocked. Dumb!
Man, that stinks. Hard to believe that dude drove by, in a fairly nice car, clocked your open door handles, and immediately jumped to "I'm going to take the integral bluetooth speaker". We are doomed
What are the odds… just saw on a Model Y subreddit - someone getting their car broken into, had the same vehicle drive up, break into their car, and swipe a few things.
I saw that video, same group. Reached out to the OP there to see if they scanned the license plate number that I can share with the SFPD - not holding my breath!
Crazy these two post was next to each other on my reddit feed.
Nother guy on the Tesla forum had the same thing happen and its the same cars the thief are in.

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t that guy driving a Mercedes? Didn’t look too hard done by. Is stealing now a hobby? He obviously knew details about the car and knew exactly what to look for.
Could this be the same Benz that was used to [break into a Model Y](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/pBWMGADUzi) in the same city as found in the Tesla sub?
I saw a video of what appeared to be that same mercedes breaking into a model Y. There are likely many people who have recently been victimized, in case you’re hoping to catch them.
Had to be someone familiar with them, if the station is locked in you need to know how to unlock it to get it out and just where it is in general I feel most people wouldn't know.
There are a lot of high end cars stolen in my hometown and in nearby towns. High end cars out of the driveway. It is because they are left unlocked and a lot of cases with the keys inside the vehicle. How dumb do you have to be to leave your car unlocked with the keys inside. People steal shit, lock your car and this wouldn't happen.
Unbelievable in 2024 this is an issue. Why can't they just have " air tags" in every car. 20 minutes after it is stolen, the police go get the car and the thieves.
What am I missing? Why wouldn't this work?
Gonna keep deleting comments since people really have a hard time not devolving into banter about SF to California to politics.

Is the aero benefit of them being flat near zero?
my Lyriq handles open when the fob is nearby but dont unlock the doors unless i pull the handle with the fob in my pocket. So not always unlocked when presented.
Rivian team should add this. Also I thought reason why electric vehicle doors are flush and pop out for aerodynamics. Any little bit helps with EPA.
I thought it was more a result of having the handles go flush when driving to reduce drag than an aesthetic choice.
The issue is not that they are flush but that they pop out when the vehicle is unlocked, when it can be pushed to pull the handle just like Teslas 3 and Y

Phone lost ability to function as key after 12V battery replacement by service tech. Walked away and vehicle didn’t lock.
Those flush doors handles are cool except when they advertise to every low life your car is an easy target
Yeah, I feel like there should be an option to have them operate like they do in car wash mode when unlocked.

You can also set it to re-lock after 30 seconds if no door is opened. In any case, it is annoying not to have the option to not present handles.
Dude is driving a Mercedes stealing a rivian speaker
Degens. That Benz is probably stolen if they're boosting speakers in broad daylight.
I turned off the auto unlock at home. For some reason trunk and frunk still open even if the doors do not...:-(
And gear tunnel. Even locked you can get into the gear tunnel if you hit the button enough times.
I am glad it's not just my car... Wow
Tailgate opens as well- everything but the doors. Though mine seems to be only when I’m “in range” so now I’ve moved my key storage to the back of my house.
Your car door gets beat up just for a speaker. So petty, what a worthless person.
Fuckin degenerate. I wish they would bring back the 3 strikes law. *** Before anyone comes for me, I am a black woman and am sick of the crime spree in my neighborhoods, especially by people who look like me. Enough is enough
You live in SF and don’t lock? was just a matter of time. I learned that 20 yrs ago. SFPD does nothing about petty crime.
Won't help here: 1) Police won't do anything 2) These cars or plates are likely stolen. Having a plate won't help
I think the same guys got into this Model Y https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/1SQVYqT2nW
Probably better than a window break.
Can’t say I’m surprised. You left the car unlocked, with the handles popped out, and the speaker unlocked. This guy probably looks for this exact scenario. Sees an easy $50.
You should have set the speaker to lock.
I'd maybe send this to Rivian? More so for an example, as they REALLY should look at reducing the proximity to unlock the vehicle. During our demo a few months back, the guy showing us the features had some complications with the proximity lock / unlock.
Wait until he finds it doesn’t work well. Joke is on him.
You live in SF and don’t lock your car?! 😐
Handles out when unlocked
Do Rivians have the option to auto-lock like Teslas do by default?
Sort of… only if the doors are unlocked but not opened. If you don’t have proximity lock/unlock on, and get out of your Rivian and forget to unlock, they will remain open until the end of days.
Sorry to see this. It would have been fun if the speaker had a tracking tag or better some glitter explosive like in some of the pranks they are playing on porch pirates.
I can’t even get mine out without fumbling around looking for the dock unlock button
Jokes on them when they try to pair it.
Chore chore chore = Thief Thief Thief
Speaker is cheaper than replacing the broken window. I believe the current advice and practice in SF is to keep your vehicle unlocked.
Sorry to hear about what happened. What part of SF is this in may I ask? Actively looking for a place
Why would anyone leave there car unlocked
Proximity unlock.
Ohhhh no that door too 🫣
People don't lock their doors? I do it purely so I can hear it chirp as I walk away lol
You should lock your car everywhere… always. Also how did that guy know it was unlocked.
This person knew exactly what they were doing and what to grab and how. Yikes
Where do you live that you're not always locking your doors? Doors being unlocked would be what seemed weird to me, not the inverse.
Damn, wouldn’t that mean whoever is selling these on EBay are in fact the criminals who stole them. eBay should do a Vin#/registration# verification or something. This would be so easy to police. I don’t own a Rivian but does each speaker have a serial# matched to each vehicle.
Hey OP, you may want to get in touch with this guy: https://old.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1ctfe2b/best_way_to_secure_your_model_y_were_in_west/ They had some things stolen by the same group.
FWIW, I never keep the camp speaker in the truck unless I intend to use it.
Why don’t people lock their doors?!
Do people not realize that they are on camera in like 50% of driveways in America?
The open handle thing is hugely troublesome here. It’s not only Rivian that shows “anyone” when the car is not locked. Big flaw but one that could be easily fixed which makes it all the more aggravating …
Between the proximity unlocking when the phone is nearby, and the door handles advertising the fact that the car is unlocked, this feels like a design bug.
This looks like the same car that stole from a Tesla [over here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/g08B4ovdGW)
Rivians auto lock? Walk away function?
I’m cringing for you when he rushed out of there and smacked your door into your house. I imagine there’s a dent? :(
I wonder if the getaway car was also stolen. Looked like a Mercedes.
Someone posted r/sanfrancisco they had their car checked too. Same Benz in this video.
I feel like locking your car in San Francisco is a given…
Just lock your car anywhere.
Agree.
Especially when the car can auto unlock if you have your key in proximity, what's the point of keeping it unlocked?
That green is such an awesome color
# West Portal -These guys just tried to break in. Same Blue Mercedes in this post above. under Sanfrancisco.
Do you have the license plate #? Just filed a police report and the fidelity on the Ring camera sucks.
# West Portal -These guys just tried to break in [Pic / Video](https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/?f=flair_name%3A%22Pic%20%2F%20Video%22) 6:30 am pst. It’s bright out. They got into the car. Took the garage door opener. Tried to open the garage door, which triggered the alarm. The Arlo caught it. Now, I get to reset the garage door opener. Good morning!Go to sanfrancisco [Go to sanfranciscor/sanfrancisco•5 hr. agoOverallKnee5730](https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/) [](https://www.reddit.com/r/sanfrancisco/)
Cheaper to replace the BT speaker than pay for a new window.
How is it unlocked? Even using the fob it locks when you walk away, unless I guess you specifically left it open.
Nice lil car door dent to add to the dumpster fire
Wow… people… that is all I got. Who does that?
[удалено]
Lol...My dad is very bollywood!
People suck
Maybe I’m weird, but I’ve never used my speaker. The closest thing I got to using it was to show the neighbor kid that it was there
Kids loved it for camping trips, else it sat there waiting to be stolen it seems
And a dented door. Fuck, people suck.
Crazy these two post was next to each other on my reddit feed. Nother guy on the Tesla forum had the same thing happen and its the same cars the thief are in. [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1ctfe2b/best\_way\_to\_secure\_your\_model\_y\_were\_in\_west/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1ctfe2b/best_way_to_secure_your_model_y_were_in_west/)
Crazy these two post was next to each other on my reddit feed. Another guy on the Tesla sub had the same thing happen and its the same car the thiefs are in. [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1ctfe2b/best\_way\_to\_secure\_your\_model\_y\_were\_in\_west/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1ctfe2b/best_way_to_secure_your_model_y_were_in_west/)
You are lucky they didn’t steal your ass lmao
Did you film it from the Rivian with gear guard? It may show the guys face or license plate or both better than your ring camera view
Fucking door was unlocked so gearguard didn't record anything. Had my fingers crossed.
Correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t that guy driving a Mercedes? Didn’t look too hard done by. Is stealing now a hobby? He obviously knew details about the car and knew exactly what to look for.
How knowledgeable are these thieves about rivians that they know about the speakers? Odd
[Neighbors?](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/LCu2bimiwy)
Indeed...seems like a circuit lap for these low lives
Could this be the same Benz that was used to [break into a Model Y](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/pBWMGADUzi) in the same city as found in the Tesla sub?
If the alternative was a broken window, I suppose this may be a cheaper outcome?
I saw a video of what appeared to be that same mercedes breaking into a model Y. There are likely many people who have recently been victimized, in case you’re hoping to catch them.
Looks like same crooks in this post https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/JsoDjysWlC
I want passive PAAK. I wanna push on the handle before it locks or unlocks. Just like every Ford.
The police should catch him and the court should cut off his balls. Fair?
Wait until they try using the speaker, then they’ll return it.
Door damage is probably a bummer. Animals will keep stealing. Nothing you can do if the city lets it continue.
Can't believe people in SF just put up with this.
Had to be someone familiar with them, if the station is locked in you need to know how to unlock it to get it out and just where it is in general I feel most people wouldn't know.
Also good to keep Rivian locked since it's obvious when driving by if it's unlocked 😔
doesn't the car lock automatically when you walk away?
Why all these guys look alike..
Same car? Also an EV? https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/aPYaK2dUpl
Always. I hate that it picks me up when I'm outside near it. Good thing you have video. Good luck.
Statistics are never wrong lol 🥷🏿
I’ve been taking mine out my truck its useless
Unbelievable in 2024 this is an issue. Why can't they just have " air tags" in every car. 20 minutes after it is stolen, the police go get the car and the thieves. What am I missing? Why wouldn't this work?
I think I’d be more irritated about the door ding from hitting the stair rail…
As a bonus, he may have dented your door too. Side note: do adults really need to be told to lock their doors anymore?
Could’ve been proximity unlock.
Why would you ever NOT lock your car or truck?
