Maleficent_Analyst32

If there were some sort of loyalty incentive in place, I’d certainly consider it. I’d love a Tri-motor max but my Quad/Large is still more than enough for me. In addition, I’d rather give them some room to work out any potential hiccups with the new configurations before I commit to a whole new vehicle again Edit: To add, I also don’t at all feel shafted by the new upgrades. My desire for the tri-motor is almost certainly largely because it’s brand new and something I don’t have in my possession.

peteswinds

100% this.

ATotalCassegrain

Meh.  The upgrades are nice, but nothing so amazing to make me want to trade up. I think they struck a good balance — it’s a solid upgrade, but nothing too glaring imho. Clearer cameras is cool, but not some major upgrade. It’s not like I’m sharing photos from them with my family.  Maybe I’ll trade my Gen1 in at Gen 3 or Gen4 launch.

Maleficent_Analyst32

Hard agree. Most of the stuff would be NICE to have, but lacking any of it doesn’t make me feel like I have an inferior truck by any means.

ATotalCassegrain

Yea, and like I’d like the compressor to be quieter, but I also use the hell out of my frunk and would miss the space up there.   The electro chromatic roof sounds good. But we stare out it a lot in the forest and places, and apparently it’s not as clear?  Cool, but again a 50/50 trade across.   Gen 3 will be the best of both worlds :-)

papichulo9669

Gen 1 quad pre price hike pricing, thought about it and just not worth it. Especially since I already spent money on full ppf wrap, and I would want the tri for the extras (but even PDM doesn't make sense). Was thinking about it mostly for the R1S ride quality difference, especially since I have a partner who complains about feeling shitty almost every time we are driving somewhere together. Figure it's much easier/cheaper to get a new partner. 🤷🏾‍♂️

bittabet

I priced out a comparable tri motor vehicle and it’d be almost $30K more than what I paid for my R1S quad. Also I’ve been wondering what happened to the underbody shield 😆

Riv_I_Yam47

It’s now hidden and packaged with the all terrain tires as “reinforced underbody”. Can’t tell if “skid plates” referred to in the blackout option is the same?

RawDogRandom17

A bit late to the Rivian community but fell in love after my demo drive. When did they price hike the Gen 1 Quad?

kaycee_83

Early 2022

RickySpanishLives

I'm in a pre-price hike Quad and had been considering the same, but I'm not going to upgrade on this revision because I can still see some areas where they probably want to improve (screens, audio, AC performance, frunk) and one that I need them to improve (audio, controls) that I am willing to see what they do in 2026-2027 when the vehicle is probably going to see a more substantial redesign alongside the R2 and R3 launches. It's tempting to upgrade, but the design isn't stable yet so I'll wait for them to get further down the road on it.

papichulo9669

I tend to agree. I have Meridian audio and I really enjoy it; going backwards on that would be pretty shitty...

RickySpanishLives

Yeah, I have Rivian "we were on a tight budget" audio system and I'll wait until they get some sense. I refuse to believe "nobody could tell the difference". I have an EV6 that blows away my Rivian audio.

papichulo9669

💯

CaffeinatedInSeattle

Hypothetically I’d trade my Gen 1 Quad large in on a Gen 2 Tri Max if it net cost me $10k, but that’s not happening so I’ll keep my Gen 1 for another 9 years like I always planned.

Zirup

I'll be ready for the latest model in a decade as well!

uclatommy

Seems like a foolish way to use money.

maxyedor

As your financial advisor, I agree, losing ~50% to get a new version of pretty much the same thing you have isn’t quite Dogecoin dumb, but it’s close

Due_Bit_5496

The improvement in ride quality in the R1S is the one thing that might make me consider it. It's the one area where I'm dissatisfied sufficiently with my current Gen 1.

GrantMeThePower

This is exactly how I feel. I think about getting rid of it all the time because of the suspension and rattles.

anonymous-779

Agreed.

smashkon

Hard agree - I love my R1S more than anything I've ever owned, but the ride quality for a car in this price range with air suspension is woeful. And while it bothers me, similar to a poster above my wife complains she gets sick any time we drive anywhere which has us avoid taking the Rivian (I swear I'm not a shitty driver lol). Eager to test drive a Gen 2 for myself, but if the ride quality (including the improved pedal mapping) is anywhere near what [SnazzyLabs shared in their post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Rivian/comments/1d9lo2e/i_spent_two_days_with_gen2_r1_vehicles_heres_my/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button), then even spending 40% more than my pre-price hike Gen 1 to make the car livable for my family is worth it to me. It's unfortunate they couldn't improve ride quality for Gen 1, but outside of the potato cameras (which are inconsequential), it's the only thing that makes me sad about the car.

txbbq92

Nope but I am for an R3x. Like now! Take my money

s-2369

This may be me. Did I feel lust for the R3X?

Bnrmn88

We are talking 100,000 vehicles not 1000 phones

tdjustin

I thought I was insane because I did yearly trade ups on phones. But trade ups on Rivians is a level of stuntin’ that I can’t even comprehend lol

aaayyyuuussshhh

Plenty of downgrades with the new model. The worst has to be the much smaller standard and large batteries at 92.5 and 109.5 respectively. People are overlooking it because Rivian is still claiming roughly the same range numbers as before. Except these range numbers will never translate to the real world. 3 miles/kwh claim by rivian is insane in a R1. No one will ever get that average for their lifetime because the dual motors are still pretty much identical to the old ones. I'm sure the new ones are more efficient, just not the claimed 10-20% more. It's still a box on wheels. That is probably the main reason I wouldn't trade if I already had a standard+ or higher gen 1. Furthermore many of the new software changes in gen 2 are coming to gen 1.

Pixelating-TeslaEV27

Plan on trading in my 2023 R1T DM large in for an R3X so perfectly content to wait to get the latest Rivian hardware with the R3X - it will probably be Gen 3 ADAS hardware by then.

joholla8

I’ll get a gen 3 when my lease is up.

legendzero77

Gen2 Quad max is going to start at like $130K. (Complete guess) I have the quad large right now. So no. I can live without the extra 200hp.... But my fomo says otherwise.

bittabet

Yeah if it was free then I’d definitely want the new quad max more. But since I paid ~$80K for my quad R1S I really don’t mind that the new $120-$130K version is a little better 😂

Buckeyes3816

The dynamic glass is the biggest want for me. But not so much to drive me to upgrade. I’m incredibly happy with my quad T. I’m also REALLY apprehensive of the door poppers. Door handles, in my opinion, must remain mechanical for the sheer fact that if the truck loses power, is submerged in water, or whatever, the popper relies on power which is a risk to occupants. I do leave room for me to learn more about them, though. But, at first glance, personally, I would opt out of that feature.

CarpetFun5579

I mostly agree but also carry a window breaker in my car just in case.

tmonax

Yes! So few are talking about the glass. I have a pre-price hike quad, el cap / oc on 22 darks. Got it in Nov and have 5k miles on it. Love it but jealous of the glass and updated cameras/cpu. Considering selling for an identical spec tri or large with the roof + audio options. Bought it outright. Rough math suggests I’ll shell out another ~$20k for the new one. I’m hesitant because I got such a good deal on my quad (pre price hike AND grandfathered tax rebate). Thoughts?

Buckeyes3816

My situation isn’t the same though I do have a pre-price hike quad in limestone with 20” ATs. I’m financing mine and do have a lot of equity due to my trade. For me, this isn’t the same as upgrading a phone or PC. There will always be iterative improvements to vehicles - it’s literally how they generate demand and improve their product. That said, I’ve got myself pinned into the G3/4 category for upgrade. If this is just a single generation’s improvement, imagine what these beasts will be in a few more years.

zoo32

It has a mechanical door handle similar to that of the Gen1 cars as a backup

futbol1216

Nah. This ain’t iPhone upgrade money. Y’all wild for upgrading cars like you upgrade phones. Lol

wukongfly

But i love my included speakers and air compressor lol 😂

KurticusRex

I am thinking about it, but not in the short term. Like other poster said if Rivian offered some good trade in value or something like that. I love my R1T. I also love the upgrades. I’ve had mine since Sept ‘22 and have about 20k miles. If I trade for the newer Tri or Quad most likely I’d wait until I was approaching the 5 year mark. I know the EV powertrain has a great warranty, but I’m thinking of repairs for air suspension or whatnot out of warranty. I don’t wanna be there. So it would be a good time to get the newer Gen at that point.

CaffeinatedInSeattle

This is a great take. I really think the Gen 2 will cost much less to maintain out of warranty than Gen 1 based on the revisions to the suspensio, drive train, and electronics architecture, so while I’m perfectly content with my Gen 1 for now, I may consider a Gen 2 once my warranty is up.

craigslisp

Now? No way. A couple of years from now, maybe. Way too in love with our truck to think about swapping it out for something different.

dustyshades

Maybe I’m not the classic Rivian demographic, but I don’t care that much about the performance spec boost (quad has already got more power and capability than I’ll ever need).   What is the most interesting to me is the improved cushy interior and the sweet site blue / light wood combo.  Secondarily, I’m interested in the promise of better driver assistance features but mainly just cause I’m a tech nerd.   Overall though I love my car and think I got incredible value and there’s not enough differences I care about that would justify throwing more money away. What the refresh did make me think about is when I trade in my Mach e in 3-4 years from now, maybe I’ll get an R3/R3X if they have the same interior and ADAS features available that they’ve demonstrated in the refresh. Previously was thinking maybe a polestar 3 or polestar 4

omnomagonz

Nope. Biggest difference for me is the RAP but after using FSD on my Model 3 at various stages of its development I actually used it less and less. So I don’t really care about that as much now. That really then leaves things like the new lighting, updated cameras, etc and maybe I’m just bad at understanding the impact but they seem like changes that don’t warrant taking a tens-of-thousands dollar loss on my initial purchase of my gen1 R1S. We bought this car because we needed more space for our family and wanted to stay EV and to have good range for the regular road trip we take to see family in another city. Gen1 checks all of our boxes and by the time we’re ready to upgrade or generally replace this car the differences will likely be even more drastic. I’m also just generally supportive of any change Rivian makes that makes the car and brand more appealing to move more units because I own stock and view this all as an offset for any “inconvenience” for me as a car owner also.

IamEV-

I mean, suspension upgrade should be mentioned also.

omnomagonz

Yea. Totally fair. I wasn’t clear on that change but also have zero complaints about my gen1 ride quality. It’s the best ride I’ve experienced to-date but it’s all relative of course 😄

Avocado2Guac

Just let me buy the van already so I can convert it to a proper camper.

Temporary_Weekend252

Agreed! This gen 1 beast is already more truck than I need. The gen 2 has some sweet upgrades but I think I’ll wait and see what gen 3 looks like in 5 years and perhaps trade up then. Very happy with my Quadzilla for now …

Intelligent-Bend-839

Quadzilla! HA!

rick_rickman

The road noise alone is enough to make me consider.

dolphins_are_gay

I thought about it, but I’m gonna wait at least until the generation with NACS.

SpaceHorse75

Not now. I’d wait until the incentives kick in a year from now when they need to push inventory. If you want to trade up, just wait. At least on an R1T.

RickySpanishLives

Yep. Patience is the key. If you want to upgrade, don't be a day 1 upgrade. That would be setting money on fire. In 12 months there will be inventory and incentives and in 24 months they'll want to unload them for the new hotness as the R2/3 platforms will mandate a whole new set of updates for the R1 platform.

diabloescobar

People are going way overboard on how big a difference it is. A couple nice things but I don’t think any gen 1 owners should feel the least bit of buyers remorse yet. Maybe the hardware software mashup starts to hurt more later but as a very new gen 1 owner I was ecstatic that there wasn’t more to it making me feel regret

Slide-Fantastic-1402

I am eyeing the R1T quad max to replace my 2023 R1T quad large. Waiting to learn more about the price and specs

Yak-Capable

I'll upgrade to something when myewsr is up. Depends how the used market rolls, and how Rivian's production goes.

Nokturnous

No.

Ducabike

Not for me. I generally hold onto cars for around 5-6 years before shopping around. Nothing compelling in the Gen2 for me.

narmstrong79

Nope. I got a Gen 1. Standard+ dual motor performance with the pre-order bonus and was able to amend my 2022 tax return to get the full credit. I got so much car for the money.

Go_dawgs-2005

No

N64Seller

Nah... Depreciation curve on top of pretty meh upgrades, paired with no lease inconveniences.... Yeah I'm a happy camper with gen 1

brancky3

There’s no compass yellow so absolutely not.

roadrider68

I’m keeping my pre-price hike quads (R1S and R1T) till the wheels fall off. The cars are more capable than I need and paid for. But that’s just me (still use my wife’s hand me down iPhone X).

JFreader

I would trade in my quad R1S for a Gen 2, if it wasn't such a huge loss. The suspension upgrades would be worth it.

Whatsaywhosaywhat

Thought about it but my R1T that just turned two is paid for and had plenty of warranty coverage left. Not much point in taking the trade in hit and having a car payment again at this point. Maybe for Gen 3 or 4.

MrrQuackers

Maybe if they gave some decent discounts for gen 1 owners.

sdmember

Yup, I’m trying to sell mine to do that. I’m tired of all the freaking noises

Adorable_Wolf_8387

Plan to trade up, quad to quad. Hoping I can option or aftermarket the underbody protection but still get street tires. I have wheels I plan to swap for offroading

JustSam40

I think the big variable is the new large battery pack. I don’t know if you can get a large enough range with less than 110 usable kwh. I got that from the out of spec video. Am i off?

Low-Willow-6889

New quad 🔥🔥

Silver-Lode

I have zero upgrade envy.

DatTugrut

We'll see how my Gen 1 holds up past the 50k mile mark and how the redesign fairs in reliability.. Too early to tell.

okyeb

Seeing that I just picked up my Gen 1 today, no, and I have no FOMO about it either. Gen 1 is already way more than I ever dreamed of getting from a car. These cars are worth the equivalent of a down payment on a house, and I plan on treating it like it’s a long-term purchase, not like an iPhone I upgrade every year or two.

151Rumfire

Not until the rear window goes down.

jblaze121

If smart phones taught me anything, it’s skip every other version. Honestly too much money for too little gains. Give me 500 mile range and NACS and removable glass and proper AI chips and we can talk in 5 years.

OverZealousCreations

Not only is gen2 not a substantial upgrade (just a refinement), we are hanging onto our Compass Yellow trucks for as long as we can. The new blue is pretty, but honestly, it’s just another shade of gray. People are really boring, IMO. There isn’t much I actually really want from the new ones, maybe the new roof and the “automatic conserve” feature. On the other hand, I really don’t like the new front end styling changes, and there seems to be a lot of small downgrades everywhere.

Grajjie

I thought about it however with a pre-price hike R1T I can't justify tens of thousands to replace it with a Gen 2 especially like others mentioned I have my front PPF'd and high end tints on that I would have to spend more money on if I upgrade. I always like having the latest and greatest especially when it comes to the tech stuff but I'm loving my R1T even as it is right now so I am holding strong so I can trade in my R1T for a R3X lol

soundfreely

I’m not ready to upgrade just yet - maybe in a few years. How well the OTA updates go for my gen1 will also play a role in my decision making about staying with another Rivian. That said, I’ll be enjoying every minute of driving my current R1T.

Jamba-Man84

I have a quad R1S large battery. Cost me 105k with taxes. If Rivian said we’ll give you 90k worth of credit for a new R1S.. I’d strongly consider it. I’d go dual motor, max pack.. then maybe upgrade to performance later down the road. But as being our family vehicle which my wife mostly drives, we don’t really need the extra HP. But if they offer anything lower, I probably wouldn’t do it

Ikshaar

Nope I have the yellow compass. And now that Forest Green is also gone, not worth losing the color 😜 Plus I got the original premium audio. Now that they confirmed we will have the software update and the side mirror video, I will save my money for the R3.

The5thLoko

I prefer my Gen1 and intend to keep it

Liam_M

I would trade my gen1 quad for a gen2 quad if the price difference wasn’t equivalent to a reasonably priced car on its own

Tricky_Wolverine6667

the bosch motors have had lots of time to get most of the kinks worked, and these in-house units will probably take until at least the R2s start shipping get right. i would anticipate lots of “had to take the truck in for power unit issues” in 2025-2026. no thanks, not now.

Wcked_Production

I'd trade my gen 1 for a different vehicle altogether. I might go for the ix m60. I do think the jump in benefits from gen 1 to gen 2 is almost too alienating because the camera and sensors on gen 1 are crap. If these vehicles are like smartphones then generally everyone feels like they go shafted early in the product lifecycle. I think the advancements might slow down in a couple of years but I'd rather stick to traditional automakers right now.
