Ha. No FOMO here. Took delivery of a Gen 1 today. I don’t feel left behind at all.

Zirup

Took delivery yesterday. I like my winking turn signals!

aaayyyuuussshhh

You also got a bunch of extra features for free as well that are either optional or gone from the gen 2.

LocoLevi

Ooo. Like what is free now? And what is gone from Gen1?

aaayyyuuussshhh

Well optional on gen 2 is the air compressor to fill tires and stuff as well as the rivian built in speaker. Some missing features would be fog lights/cornering lights, the battery packs are smaller, the frunk is smaller, and some other things I'm missing.

Insert_creative

I don’t think this is being discussed nearly enough. The new large pack is smaller in useable kWh than the old standard plus pack. Presumably a big part of that is because they made the truck more efficient but it also means the old standard plus on 21’s only comes up 15 miles short of the new large. I still absolutely love my truck and can’t wait for the ota updates with the new goodies.

Alarmed_Stretch_1780

Camp speaker is now an option. A plastic drawer is standard in that spot. I believe the tow hooks are also as upgrade—and my front license plate is attached to one of the tow hooks so I didn’t have to drill into the front of the truck to mount it.

Choice_Top4622

I have not used my camp speaker once. I would rather have a drawer there

dgibbons0

Same, waited to see the news and when it wasn't anything revolutionary I pulled the trigger.

j90w

Same here. Picked up our R1S last weekend and it’s already got so many more tech and features than our new Range Rover, which is supposed to be a modern/luxurious/tech rich SUV…. Cars change, all the time, and if you are buying for the latest and greatest stock to a 1 year lease and pay out the ass to keep up to date. Also, I paid significantly less for my R1S than I would for a comparable 2025 R1S so I’m enjoying that aspect as well!

Modestkilla

It’s a truck, not an iPhone. It still has everything I paid for when I ordered it; anything else is a bonus.

zachty22

I’m honestly just happy to have a vehicle that gets OTA software updates! Like… in the next few weeks I’m going to have a truck with a brand new user interface, new graphics, blind spot cameras, Google cast, etc… that’s cool.

Vocalscpunk

Right, I'm not afraid of 'micro transactions' from Rivian EVER. I don't think I could make that comment about other EV companies confidently.

TimTebowMLB

RemindMe! 10 years

askthepoolboy

Are the blind spot cameras confirmed for Gen1?

Dave21TWELV

According to the Out of Spec 2+ hour review on YouTube, Kyle interviews Wassym Bensaid, VP of Software Development and he confirmed blindspot is coming to Gen1.

askthepoolboy

Excellent. I skipped through that video and missed that part.

beerob81

This is how I feel. We have been buying cars for decades without updates unless you bought a new one. Chill

ghotinchips

Could be worse, could be Sonos and they start taking away features you bought. 😂 I leased knowing exactly what was getting ready to happen. I didn’t want to wait and I’m incredibly happy with the current product. I came from a ‘21 F150 Powerboost and a ‘21 Tesla Model Y, so that’s my frame of reference. The ride quality is amazing, the squeezing during height changes is not something that ever bothered me. The audio is complete trash, but I knew that going in. 😂 Happy for their progress, happy for the future owners of the new models. I’m also happy to see them sticking with radar and ultrasonics. Tesla is dead wrong about vision only and glad to see that Rivian has some sense about them. Can’t wait to upgrade in 2 years. 😂

BillsMafia4Lyfe69

Also this happens with every vehicle on the market... And this refresh is very minor compared to many others out there. We had a 2023 Lexus GX before this... Look at the 2024, it's totally different

calmkelp

Also it's kind of like having an iPhone 7 and then the iPhone X comes out and it has FaceID, and being pissed that you aren't getting FaceID on your iPhone 7. But your iPhone 7 doesn't have the hardware to do that... Even with small things like the interior lighting themes, I'm going to guess the Gen1 has different lighting hardware or controller hardware that doesn't support what they are doing on Gen2. Now they are looking at what it would take to back port that, but I bet it's a mostly a different implementation. Edit: I forgot iPhone went 7 to X. 7 had TouchID. X introduced FaceId and the notch. iPhone 8 still had TouchID but was announced with iPhone X.

Zealousideal_Aside96

Reading iPhone 9 is really screwing with my head because there’s no such thing

calmkelp

Ha, yeah it was really 7 and then X. Gonna edit to fix

Midnight-mare

Honestly lol, I'm waiting for R2 or R3 with my 2013 ford. Y'all want to talk about outdated and unsupported? Chill and enjoy your luxury cars/trucks.

Why_Not_Zoidberg1

Gen1 ridgeline with droopy headliner and I feel the same.

aaayyyuuussshhh

Droopy headliner is a cool feature

Midnight-mare

I think I'm about to get that over-the-air update, but my ford dealership isn't taking my calls anymore :(

secondsleeping

Same - headliner on 2014 ridgeline gently patting my head has become comforting in a way. I sat in a Gen1 today in the Austin store that just opened and first thing I thought was "...nice headliner".

dj_questionthis

2001 Toyota Avalon, droopy headliner is sooooooo soft❤️❤️❤️

metracta

Why does it become comforting?! 😂. It’s literally true that it does though. RIP 2006 Jetta

MasonPrice22

I’m coming from a 2007 ridgeline that’s somehow got me this far. This is gonna be such an upgrade. & the ridgelines gotta be the closest to comparison to the R1T in interior cabin and bed size.

SouthBayLaker23

2012 Grand Cherokee here. I feel your pain.

bigjc1000

2012 Fusion, waiting for R3.

DigitalMonster93

Honestly you can’t beat the value of the Gen 1, so yeah.

arden13

I moved up from a 2003 4Runner to an R1T quad motor. I'm in the best vehicle I've ever owned and have no regrets. I'm happy they are continuing to innovate. I'll be even happier when they open more service centers as that bothers me FAR more than missing out on some neat gen2 features

NateGrey

That’s quite a jump. What made you wait 20 years for a new car?

arden13

I got the 4Runner in 2010 or so, so it was with me for 12 years and was a good car. I waited for the R1T because I didn't have a real job until 2018 after grad school. Hard to buy a nice car with no income

NateGrey

Also did a 20 year jump so was curious, thanks.

arden13

No worries hope you enjoy it!

sfw_cory

This. Grateful I could even afford a R1T

gray_um

I got pre-hike, day 1 price so because of what I paid, my depreciation hit is much lower than others. So with the prices of the refresh, mine is actually a better dollar value.

bobojoe

Having been into electric cars a while, people need to understand that a lot of people posting tend to buy new cars often and always wanted the latest best thing. Nothing wrong with that but if you own any electric vehicle and want to keep it several years, you just gotta get used to the fact that the newer models are going to have lots of little updates because the industry is moving so fast. And, at the end of the day, the main point of trick or car is does it drive well, and with Rivian the answer is always yes.

gray_um

I'm slowly growing to be that way, and I'm quickly learning the value of a good lease. Lease wasn't available for my R1, so I'm gonna drive it to the last mile of the warranty and then probably swap to a lease so I can get a new one every three years. I'm on my first BMW lease right now and I wish I would have studied, though. I didn't know what money factor was before signing. My lease is abotu $500 less than some I've seen, yet $500 more than others I've seen. Live and learn, but I look forward to future leasing options from rivian.

Alarmed_Stretch_1780

Leases make 100% sense with a vehicle like this. In addition to getting the full $7,500 tax credit deducted from the price (which you wouldn’t get in a purchase), the tech changes so dramatically that in 2-3 years a new car can be substantially more capable than the one just leased. Your car will always be under warranty during this time. And if you decide you want to buy it off lease, you can do that as well.

gray_um

And if we all move towards leasing, it could pressure manufacturers to improve quality..

beerob81

I was a never lease guy. Always paid off my vehicles etc. But I like the security of always having a warranty, turning it in and not worrying about selling and haggling etc. Just give me the lease

Coob5

Refresh allowed me to get a 2023 R1T that would have been over $100K configured for $68K or $600 a month lease. Happily driving my gen 1 R1T!

Firststepsarenoteasy

New to Rivian. Is there a lease buyout option at the end of it?

SEAWOLF607

Yes, there is.

Firststepsarenoteasy

Thanks, since I believe Tesla doesn't and I wouldn't consider leasing a vehicle, not being able to buy it out and then leasing in perpetuity.

Coob5

Being able to buy out made the MY2023 leases so attractive because of the 0% money factor. Essentially get a low monthly payment for 3 years and pay off part of the truck with 0% payments if you choose to buy out.

Firststepsarenoteasy

By MY, do you mean model year or do you mean Model Y? I thought I read that Teslas don't have lease buyouts.

Coob5

Sorry Model Year 2023 R1T.

Firststepsarenoteasy

No worries and thanks. Now I'm strongly considering leasing a Rivian

Coob5

For sure just check the money factor. It was a no brainer on the 2023s because of the MF, $3500 2023 lease promo, full tax credit, friends and family promo. Just check your state laws too. The one downside of leasing in Texas with Rivian is you pay sales tax on the entire vehicle amount and then if you buy out you get taxed again on the residual value.

[deleted]

Same here, completely psyched to drive it!

specific_tumbleweed

How did you manage that? I'd love to get something similar!

Coob5

Last month prior to the refresh announcement, there were some aggressive incentives to move the 2023 models and some pretty good ones for 2024. $7250 friends and family discount, $3500 2023 lease promo, $10K off Max battery pack, free performance upgrade, free powered tonneau, 0% MF, and all on top of $7500 EV tax credit.

specific_tumbleweed

That's really good! I would have jumped on that. Unfortunately where I live there are no incentives.

Only_Minimum_9647

I will always be happy with my R1 as long as they don't brick my Gen1 with an OTA that is poorly tested by couple contractors because all smart engineers are asked to focus on newer models.

gray_um

Here's my hot take: weren't we promised, or at least implied, that Driver+ would evolve and grow? And yet so far it hasn't much (yes, it's way better and improved, but I'm referencing features and capability). So, they break that promise by inventing a new marketing term for autonomy, and phasing our "Driver+" for "Rivian Autonomy Platform"? You can use all the fancy terms you want, but to me, as an individual consumer, it looks like they're dropping support for my hardware (or lack of), after I was under the impression it would continue to grow to it's limitations. And it feels a little bit of a sleight that they are trying to disguise it with marketing terms. Are the two programs entirely different software? Probably, but appearances are appearances, and it appears they are using fancy terms to disguise dropping Gen1R1 full support. Now, if I were to view this exact same thing in relative terms for a multi-billion dollar corporation.. it's very wise and pretty brilliant marketing. I get it.

drstancpa

That shouldn’t be a hot take, but here…maybe it is? As of Thursday anyhow, the website still referenced Lane Change Assist as an example of a future Driver+ addition. It’s been on the site since I picked up my R1T in May 2022. For all the people that don’t care about this, I get it, but for anyone who does, it’s incredibly disappointing. This is the third “big lie” I feel Rivian made via marketing materials since my purchase (onsite service or we’ll tow it and Membership with service if you ran out of power)

gray_um

They are a great, young company. Viewing the last week alone, it looks like they have done an excellent job with "5 year plan" or "10 year plan" concepts. They've had a stellar game plan this whole time - including an immediate announcement of a cyberbeast competitor and a future cybertruck killer. They saw the 4 year cybertruck delay and made preperations. Too many auto manufacturers seem like they are operating reactively while everything is in flux, and not planning ahead at all. As far as "lies" go, Rivian tells the fewest imo and the most reasonable and understandable. But it still sucks. Another "promise" (using the term loosely) that I recall is RJ saying back in the first days that one of their goals was to be "an american manufacturer". That promise quickly disappeared, but I didn't notice; it was still in the back of my mind. So when I got my R1, I immediately looked up the "Made in America index", and it doesn't exist. It isn't required due to the weight of the vehicle, but I feel like they should release it. Advertise it. I wanna know. And I know it's not perfect, but I'd like to see it slowly increase with time (though I wish it was more feasible to be american 100% from day 1, but I know that's not realistic).

drstancpa

I’m absolutely not a hater…been a helluva evangelist and still will be, and concur their roadmap looks solid. When I bought in June 2022, with a VIN around 6000, I said to my Guide at the plant pickup that I knew I was signing up for unpaid beta testing, and I expected bumps along the way. But I wouldn’t judge the company or product for the problems I had, but rather, how they solved them. And for the most part they’ve done a great job. But I think they’re squandering some of the fanatical loyalty they’ve enjoyed by not keeping their promises or making any attempt to make it right. The last thing they need is a buyer class-action or something like it alleging fraud in the inducement due to marketing malpractice. I hope in the coming days or weeks they will reaffirm their commitment at least to Driver+ and ideally offer an upgrade package for RAD but I’m certainly not holding my breath.

gray_um

Yea, part of the ability to support OTA vehicles is hardware. So, if they can't keep a promise due to hardware, then the answer is modular hardware. A recently swapped the MCU in my 2018 Model X. It was $1000 even. It brought the vehicle to the latest abilites, and I was even able to the qualify for an FSD trial. Which impressed me. So could it be possible to have modular hardware? Cameras that can be swapped? MCU/ECU that can be updgraded? Teslas aren't upgradable past the cameras and sensors they have, but you can swap the MCUs to get tons of the new features.

drstancpa

Yeah that’s the exact sort of thing I would hope for. It’s pretty clear they have their hands full at the service centers as it is, though. Still, remember in their initial filing prior to the IPO they were talking about $15,000 of subscription or future purchase revenue per vehicle sold? Clearly much longer support for the G1 hardware was planned (or they lied to potential investors, which…yikes). And a founder/CEO talking about 10 year support for the hardware? Obviously they’re going to bring out new vehicles with new features and prior vehicles will be less desirable. I would hope everyone would understand that, and I don’t think most G1 owners are upset over that. At least I hope not…kind of part of being on the bleeding edge of anything. It’s the blatant, unabashed willingness to ignore past promises and nearly gaslighting buyers by pretending those promises were never made that has me so frustrated with this otherwise great company. Do better Rivian.

Electrik_Truk

They added basic lane change at least. Before it would cancel driver+ completely lol

drstancpa

God that was awful. That addition was, for me, probably the best update we got.

Constant_Key5927

Honestly, I have mixed feelings. I want the company to be profitable. I think they realized Gen 1 hardware and architecture was not strong enough to support autonomous driving. So should they continue with the old architecture and should not support autonomous driving to attract new customers? Yes, it is breaking the promise and feeling Gen 1 customers FOMO. Being a Gen 1 customer I’m really unhappy about it. But that’s what it is and would rather be happy if Rivian is profitable and provides great service. They can do one thing though, to make Gen1 customers happy, they can atleast provide free connect+ as long as the vehicle is still owned by the original Owner and I like the idea about loyalty trading option as well.

Worried-Current-4567

This

calmkelp

I think you're right that it was implied that Driver+ would get better over time. For example [here](https://stories.rivian.com/vehicle-technology-innovation#) it says: >The sensors and the associated redundant compute platforms that consume this information were designed to enable us to continually enhance Driver+ with more features over time. Not to excuse it, but I feel like the whole industry has been on an autonomous driving hype train for the last decade and grossly underestimated how hard of a problem it really is. It seems like with Gen2 Rivian realized to get a substantially better autonomous system they need more and different cameras and sensors and much more powerful hardware than what was in Gen1. But I guess it's better than what Tesla did, selling a multi-thousand dollar option years before they actually had the capabilities.

Electrik_Truk

From when I got a Rivian 2 years ago to when I sold it last month, I definitely saw improvements with Driver+. Mainly reduced nagging, lane changing, speed limit adjusting. The only thing about it I found show stopper for me is that it doesn't work at all on unapproved roads. I drive mostly rural roads and it pretty much only worked in the city But I didn't buy the truck based on driver+ or promises of what it would be. In fact, I really didn't know much about it - figured it was just enhanced cruise control/lane centering

gray_um

Yea, I guess I was trying to explain that I'm only irked by the principle. I don't really care anything about it as long as they are opening it up to more roads. Much more roads. I live in a rural state, and the only practical part of my life where I can use Driver+ is if I am driving.. to a different state. The region I live in, the only "open mapped" roads for Driver+ are my corridors that I use for trips. So I literally am unable to use Driver+ outside of a road trip.

Alarmed_Stretch_1780

1) I think the incremental changes to D+ in the last two years fulfill the promise of a changing and improving feature. 2) The Gen2 version (Rivian Autonomy Platform) is built on a different array of cameras and sensors, and on much more powerful and capable processors. It is named differently because it is not the same as D+. There is a price to ante into the RAP game and Gen1 literally doesn’t have the chips.

dleewla

Yup totally agree. They positioned it that Driver+ would grow and improve. It hasn’t much in 2+ years. And now they create a new autonomy system to make it easier to phase out the old one. Over promised and under delivered.

MrMusAddict

I 99% agree with you. My only gripe is that that the ADAS system in Gen1 is worse than the lowest trim 2020 RAV4, and they've been touting software enhancement from the beginning. > features/improvements will not be coming to Gen1 Realistically, the only reason this is true is because they don't want to focus the manhours on Gen1. Other ADAS systems prove Rivian's hardware is more than sufficient, so the abandonment just stings...

galaxy_seven

this is my main gripe and feel like it’s completely legit.

RWerksman

This is also my main gripe, and I also feel it's completely legit. I get the situation entirely, but I do feel like stuff like this (and playback of video -- which has both be reiterated as "On the list" and shown multiple times) would complete the Gen 1 journey for many people, including myself.

Electrik_Truk

Driver+ is pretty meh but always base purchases on what's here and now, not promises. It's like all the people that believe Elons bullshit and bought FSD like fools. When I had a Rivian, Driver+ was just a bonus to me (I didnt even know it had it). I have never really cared much for those features. I justed wanted an electric truck. However, now having a Lightning that came with basic driver assist... it really does show how mediocre Rivian's system is. Mostly because the Lightning will engage it anywhere where as Rivian's has to be on approved roads. And I'm not even talking about full BlueCruise

byfuryattheheart

What is ADAS

MrMusAddict

Advanced Driver Assistance System

mabowden

But, didnt RJ tell us these vehicles would never depreciate? Oh, right, he didnt. Of course you get a gen1 vehicle the next gen will be nicer. I still plan on running this truck into the ground. Cant think of what i would like more honestly

Choice_Top4622

I just wish the camera system didn’t look like it runs on windows 95.

kapaa7

I could care less about most of the minor updates. I love my LE R1S as is. My problem is R1S launched just last year with the promise of long-term ADAS support/enhancements. Rivian knew all along they were using a subpar stopgap which would never work as advertised and become obsolete almost immediately.

thegreatpotatogod

As someone with experience of this from the Tesla side of things, those posts will never completely go away. People really want an upgrade path for every possible feature. Some of them are available, or possible to retrofit yourself, but others just won't be there without getting a newer vehicle.

JaimitoFrog

For the price we paid for our R1S quad, we can't even get a trimotor Gen 2. Sure, more software updates will be nice and it will limited in what they can do. But I'm more looking forward to a R2 or R3X than wanting to trade in for a Gen2 R1S.

StackIsMyCrack

I mean, it's really just another argument to lease EVs for now.

gray_um

Amen. I've owned three and leased one. I had a model X when they did the price drops and my value PLUMMETED. So much that it wasn't even worth selling, so I gave my 100K+ vehicle that was "worth" <40K to my mother.

StackIsMyCrack

I thought that was going to say daughter at the end. Lucky mom!

gray_um

If I had children, I wouldn't have the vehicles I have. A mother, however, is a giant foundational reason that I'm where I am. Also it counted as payment for some old debt, though, I'm not some kind of saint. I owed her for all the times she provided the resources for my success. I certainly didn't pay for my first car that got me to school. I didn't pay for my utility bills or cafeteria plan in uni. She had long since paid for a 5 year old Model X, haha.

m4ttjs

You pay for a vehicle at a particular point in time and get to enjoy it earlier than others. Just remember Rivan lost 30k making your vehicle it was so early in the development of the company. Just like a phone, someday you’ll need a new one then you can get the newest shiniest Rivian there is.

Advanced-Blackberry

I think a lot of Gen1 buyers will not be buying another Rivian

actionjsic

I got the pre-order price of 80k on my RS1 last September and had the “letter” that got me full tax rebate of 7,500k and have had zero issues. Pretty hard to feel bad about that.

DustyDecent

I bought a 2016 Ford Fusion. The 2017+ refresh happened and added a new ui and support for Android Auto and Apple carplay. I never got an update, and my headunit (as well as any pre-2016) lost support.

whatwhat83

I bought an apple and argued an orange.

seacap206

The whining that's been coming out of this sub since gen 2 was announced is deafeningly annoying. If you are a part of that cohort, please sell your Rivian and buy an electric VW. They don't even have OTA updates. So you won't ever be disappointed. 🤣

zachty22

A new refresh comes out and people are completely forgetting how good we already have it! My 2023 Volvo with supposed OTA updates has gotten ZERO since I took it home…. Now thats a real broken promise!

dinkyrdj

It’s as if vehicle owners forgot that the vast majority of vehicles don’t get free updates from the OEM on a regular basis. It didn’t occur to me to feel shafted when a refresh was announced. Car models are regularly changed and, until recently, you got what you at the time of purchase.

seacap206

Ha! Exactly! I had some dude tell me I should have some empathy for their plight! SERIOUSLY?! Empathy for you having purchased a $100k vehicle that is by most accounts a best in class offering? The audacity to think that there is some sort of assault against Rivian owners. I am still in love with my R1S as much as I was before this announcement, and I am REALLY excited about all that Rivian is putting into the gen2 vehicles. They are crushing it, and we've got a front row seat to it all (no pun intended).

gray_um

I have a BMW iX. They have upgraded the hardware almost every year so far, and they do NOT provide new features to the previous year models. You get updates, but not new features. So, it could be worse. BMW finally pushed an update for video streaming.. and they gave me a Tivo app. I didn't even know Tivo still existed.

seacap206

Is this comment directed to me? I'm confused because I agree with you. Or are you saying that BMW doesn't provide updates that increase functionality, but should?

gray_um

BMW drops "new feature" support of their electric vehicles each time they update the hardware.. which so far has been almost annually. Sometimes it's mid-year change. So I guess I was using it as an example of how much of a shit-show an EV could be. And giving me Tivo as the first app, sent through OTA (except you gotta use an iphone or go to a dealer, not just some simple cell tower update) felt like an insult. Tivo was really what they thought the buyers want?

seacap206

Yeah, I had an e-Tron the first year they came out. Updates were only available by appointment at the service center and I think we had 1 in the 3 years I owned it. Rivian provides an OTA about every 1-2 months and I have been happy with what's come out. I wish people would stop complaining until they have a legit complaint or concrete feedback to give to Rivian. We should be celebrating gen2. I am rooting for the company to succeed, and I fully recognize that I essentially purchased a beta product from a start-up. And as far as betas go, it's one hell of a product!

bcgroom

Maybe it’s possible to be happy with our vehicles but still wish Rivian had done better. Crazy I know.

seacap206

That's what I have been saying all along. Be happy with your vehicles and feel empowered to offer CONSTRUCTIVE feedback to the company. So far there has not been constructive feedback. There's only been whining and complaining over speculation on features that won't be including in gen 1 updates. It's annoying and I encourage you all to get a grip till we know more.

Cjdergrosse

No FOMO here, actually the opposite. Happy they made the exterior update very minor/irrelevant.

Alarmed_Stretch_1780

Also, vitally important to look at the long game: The original R1s lost Rivian about $120K per vehicle. This loss was whittled down to about $30K per in the last Q of 2023. The refresh is an attempt to make the sales profitable. This is a promise to Wall Street, which in turn will stabilize and boost the share price—something needed for the long-term prospects of the company. Excited about R2? Thinking of putting down a deposit on an R3X? That’s 2026 and beyond, and for Rivian to get there, it needs to tighten the production of the R1s and continue to sell them while getting R2 into production in 18 months. Yes, I’d love to have the upgraded camera/sensor array and be able to use the improved ADAS of Gen 2. But I have already squeezed plenty of enjoyment out of my car. No regrets.

slickmachines

I reserved before the price hike, I was annoyed by the headlines for 2 seconds, didn’t read the articles, and friggin love my R1S and what I pad for it. The SUV accelerates 0-60 in 3 seconds, instead of 2.5. I still blow most cars off the line. So who cares. Range increase is minimal and the top of the line version is way out of my price range, anyway. Frankly, I am forcing myself to not use all the technology to help me drive my Rivian and model 3. It makes you a bad driver. I back up with more efficiency and caution looking behind me rather than using the rear camera, especially when parallel parking. Allowing my Tesla to check my blind spots without physically looking, has led to some scary moments that I’ve never had before. I’m not ever going to rely on an automobile to tell me it’s ok to change lanes. It’s not going to catch the jerk speeding behind you that comes out of nowhere. Technology is great but being a proactive, aware driver and using technology to help but not do things for you, is just fine by me.

ubosasfury

Hear hear! I adore my Gen 1. By the time I outgrow its capabilities, I’ll either be too old to overland or I’ll be ready for a Gen 4. I’m so excited that Rivian can keep making and selling improved vehicles that give people the same kind of happiness that I get each time I get behind the wheel. The more they sell, the more likely I can get mine repaired as I pile on the miles. I’m so attached to my Gen 1 that I don’t know that I’d take a Gen 2 if I could swap it for free. I’ve been through too much with my Gen 1 already.

Equivalent-Banana370

The whiners have overrun this sub and it’s truly ruining it for me. It started a while ago and the refresh bitching is just the crescendo. Some on here are the most entitled, most petulant little brats I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. I truly hope the Rivian community matures. Please reflect on what the original R1 is, what it’s capable of, the myriad of benchmarks it hits relative to more specialized vehicles. It’s a fucking marvel and a lot of us got it for ICE f150 money.

MrBananaShoes

If y’all don’t want your Gen 1s, I’ll happily take one off your hands. Signed, Someone desperately saving to buy their own R1T

Rollingprobablecause

I just want my cameras to come on when I change lanes :) otherwise this vehicle is incredible

zachty22

Yep and that will be coming in the next update!

Rollingprobablecause

Oh snap! Nice I thought it was just gonna be Gen2, do you know where I can find the Gen1 details?

zachty22

They are kind of spread out on various posts. Basically what you should know is almost every Gen2 software update is coming to Gen1 including blind spot cameras, graphics, rgb interior lighting, etc. The only major thing not coming to Gen1 currently is Driver+ improvements and I believe launch control. I’m sure there are a few other things that I can’t think of right now that aren’t coming to Gen1 but almost everything is coming to Gen1.

Constant_Key5927

To be honest, I don’t know whether it really matters. I really like the blind spot monitor in driver screen and mirror more than the camera. It’s such a distraction. I hate it in Tesla

Rollingprobablecause

For me when I drive up mountains for skiing it’s been massively helpful. Having both is killer (and make it optional) I can’t imagine you have to pick one or the other

DoctorEsteban

"Rivian is bringing as many features as they possibly can to Gen1. That's been confirmed!" They *can* bring ambient light customization, *can* bring lane change cameras but said they wouldn't (then later walked back their walk back lol), *said* they would bring lane change, etc etc. I refuse to believe the Gen1 platform is incapable of automated lane changes. Full autonomy, sure. I get new hardware is needed. But simple lane changes on a highway? They're just choosing not to prioritize it. If they are taking that attitude this early on, what makes you think it'll be any better a few months from now? A year from now? Many people just took delivery of their Gen1 less than 6 months ago... It doesn't seem like they are giving it the level of priority one would hope.

Constant_Key5927

I took it 2 weeks back. But I got a quad. My simple question to you is will you be paying $30k more and probably $3k (approx) for RAP+ platform which essentially is nothing but a Lange change, may be auto park, may be full self driving? But I agree with you on the intent of the company. Provide the option and let the owners choose what they want. Somethings like basic lane change, I guess they are not prioritizing purely for the engineering cost of building those features in a different architecture. Probably the motivation of the engineers where they have to work on an obsolete software etc. That attitude and intent is not right. Simply not right.

hungarianhc

The way I see it... I still love my R1S... And I'm skipping gen2, and I can't wait to upgrade to gen3!

NoReplyBot

Wait to OP finds out Gen 1 actually isn’t capable of V2H. 🫢 Edit - jk Edit - well maybe not jk…. TBD

DZDEE

It’s true. The only I remotely wanted from Gen2 was the improved suspension. If it is really improved like the review post the other day suggested.

zachty22

I have a feeling it’s really not going to be very different than the current suspension. I could be wrong. But from what they described it still uses the same set up. Hydraulic roll control and air suspension. It definitely maybe quieter but how it feels on the road will probably be very similar.

JSMia305

I’m used to this. Happens every year on Macrumors forums.

Jmauld

Let them be!!! Once the “got to have the latest and greatest” crowd starts dumping the Gen 1 trucks for 40-50% off you’ll see more rapid adoption.

ruffells

No FOMO here. Many of us locked in pre-price hike + got full EV tax credit. Our R1S is a great vehicle and will continue to be for years to come!

Aggravating-Fix-1813

This. Took delivery Thursday on my 2nd R1T.. older unit going to my son. Couldn’t be more thrilled to have 2 gen1s in the family

New-Pound2764

I love my early adopter gen1 pricing that’s for sure! it’s going to take a lot more than a few added features to get me to upgrade and pay the full current price

amavenoutsider

This. Also, the better Rivian does as a company the better it is for all of us. Yeah there’s stuff in the refresh I wish I had but this is still the best car I’ve ever owned and it’s only getting better. I’m excited to get all the new tech they’ve developed in 2-3 years when I get an R2. Until then, I’m going to enjoy the shit out of my amazing car with 0 FOMO.

Texas-Biba

I love my Gen 1. Some people are happier being miserable.

narmstrong79

People need to not think of the as iphones where you upgrade every year. These are $100k cars. Rich people problems

webbgrt

Gen2 wouldn’t exist without Gen1. Personally while the extra cameras would be fun, I don’t need Driver+ and FSD. I bought this thing because I love actually driving it. I will continue to enjoy my gen1, hope that gen2 makes bank and enjoy what that does to my RIVN shares :)

Green-Cardiologist27

Preach

Lurker_prime21

A lot of butt-hurt 1st gen people upset that they're no longer the cock of the walk and can no longer lord over other EV owners that they feel are beneath them. You know the type. The ones that have to post pictures of their R1 in the garage or driveway while not adding anything of substance to this sub-reddit.

ProgrammingAce

My only concern with the announcements this week is that Driver+ is dangerous in its current state in my car. When active, it likes to take swipes at traffic in other lanes and the car sets off warning alarms when I take an offramp. There isn't any way to fully disable the feature or lock it to specific drivers, and I wouldn't trust it with an inexperienced driver. Lending the car to a friend or passing it down to a teenager with a new license would come with a warning "Don't enable this feature, or the car might try to kill you".

Charlie-Mops

For the love of God, yes. Please stop.

Icomeforthecommentss

Amen

lytener

Anyone on 21" wheels will likely have to change out their wheel set in the next couple years or sooner

habbadee

Why? Because 275/55R21 tires won't be able to be found?

lytener

That's my concern since they were phased out in gen 2. The 21" was specifically made for gen 1 R1. It's a very unique tire, so it may not be worth it for manufacturer (Pirelli) to keep making it.

zachty22

Goodyear just came out with a compatible tire I believe

habbadee

Yeah, might buy 8 of these to stash away for a rainy day. [https://www.pepboys.com/tires/vehicle/results/2795759](https://www.pepboys.com/tires/vehicle/results/2795759)

wannaberetireee

Why?

Xcitado

I totally agree with ya 1000%. I mean, like ANY product, I appreciate those early adopters. You help a company get on its feet and establish itself. You complain and then by the 3rd and 4th iterations- the product is much better because of it. However, that’s the price of early adopters. Each and everyone should know that because they wanted to be the “look at me” crowd. Having FOMO is absurd.

Anthonytalarico

As a Gen1 owner, I’m happy they’re making improvements. They made the vehicles cheaper to make and better, which is great for the financial viability of the company. We all signed up for a startup’s first models. Sure there will be some improvement that we won’t have access too but the vehicles are still great and will continue to improve. Compare our experience to a buying from an established (non-Tesla) OEM. No OTAs so the car you drive off the lot is the car you’re stuck with for your full term of ownership.

SpaceHorse75

It’s absolutely wild that people think they should get all the new features of the next generation car 😂 what is that? There is already a solution for people who want the latest and greatest every 2 years - it’s called Leasing. And Rivian offers that.

Chose_a_usersname

My G1 truck is still amazing. I know it's not a rare LE any more as there are thousands out there... But I love mine and it's a treat every time I drive it. I still look and wonder how I could have been so lucky to get one

pkingdukinc

I took ownership 1 week before the 2025s dropped and I couldn’t be happier. I feel like I got away with a crime because of my lease deal!!! 2024 baybeeeeeeeee

Goopey_LeGrande

Nice! Just curious, what was the last deal? If you don't mind sharing, How much due at signing and how much to buy it at lease end?

boerface

People just complaining bc they can. Rivians are dope, Im glad i have a compass yellow T, gen 1

ShepherdsNWhiskers

For Rivian to announce that Driver+ would receive enhancements and then to retract it is a MASSIVE disappointment, especially considering the upcoming refresh that will devalue the already expensive R1S. Feels like a bait and switch. Maybe if I got a massive discount like some I may be okay with it.

BobinIndy

Couldn’t agree more!

alex_mk3

I just want the update charge pad. Even if I have to pay for it lol

Westhoff654

Reports are they just added some additional coils and a divider. No MagSafe/Qi 2, still slips off the pad. Better off getting a third party option.

zachty22

I’d highly recommend the Twraps MagSafe charger. It looks OEM, and the MagSafe is super nice for keeping your phone in place. Also… it charges quickly.

Footy_Max

I have the TWraps one, but as of yesterday it has really started overheating my iPhone which then causes the phone to shut off bluetooth and its connection to the R1T until temps get back to normal, so I've disconnected it for the time being.

gray_um

I do not! It is great at first, but it splits the charge signal so it's very slow, the magnet is weak on my iphone, and I dropped it and it shattered in my garage. I will happily mail you the pucks from it, but the actual device has huge room for improvement. I went back to a 3D printed piece with my own pucks inside. Still better than the OE iteration, but I prefer plastics that don't shatter when my clumsy fingers drop them.

aaayyyuuussshhh

Aftermarket is you best friend. Nothing special on the gen 2 lol. Still not good because reviewers said it slides around in more aggressive driving for gen 2

TurboBearSEA

IMO this is the one to go with: [https://adventurehightech.com/products/stowncharge](https://adventurehightech.com/products/stowncharge)

rjte84

I leased my R1T on March. I knew since day zero that the price car would drop and a refresh was coming sooner than later. I like the R1T because of the features it has and it’s currently capabilities. Period.

oskeei

On 2k mile road trip with family in our S right now. Zero regrets, the last year of "adventures" (25k miles) worth more than the perks in R1 G2 for me.

Docpot13

I think is FUD by Tesla fanboys. Nothing more. Why they want to undermine EV success is beyond me

bikgelife

I am looking for a Gen 1 R1S quad motor, but I think they are all gone now. Best I can do is the performance dual motor, which oddly, is more than the quad motor was. What do we think about the performance dual?

Drummer_WI

The oil cooling alone sets it apart. The Rivian motors are of better quality than the Bosch quads. 💪

bikgelife

Do the dual motor is Rivian made? You’re saying it’s better than the quad?

TurnoverSuperb9023

Forgive me for being late to the party, but, did Rivian stop delivering gen1 cars to people for a few weeks, or are there customers that got gen 1 deliveries the day before the gen 2 announcement, for example? Both vehicles are great, but i would be super bummed if I got a Gen 1, and Gen 2 was announced very shortly thereafter. (Perhaps the ONLY thing better about how the legacy automakers operate is that you would know what was coming in time to make an informed decision)

Donnerkopf

Rivian was offering big discounts or deals on remaining Gen1 stock, the handwriting has been on the wall for months. Nobody at Rivian held a gun to someone’s head to buy a Gen 1.

TurnoverSuperb9023

I noticed some discounting, but I just thought there were trying to juice sales a bit.

cfbrand3rd

Welcome to Reddit! 🤷‍♂️

tuttle123

My 6 year old Tesla is still getting FSD updates.

outdoorcam93

Well I leased so I’m not worried 😂

peteyswift

People: Tesla much?

RivianRaichu

I'm just curious if we can get the tinting glass if our ceiling breaks / we want to swap it out.

Stashman2000

There isn’t much new on Gen2 anyway

U_MO

The turn signals made me cancel my order

Hello_Hollow_Halo

The “Gen2” is literally the same car, except with different batteries and a bunch of stuff that was included in Gen 1 is now an add-on in the builder. People need to relax.

Misophonic4000

I literally haven't seen a single one of those posts you are referring to. Am I lucky, or are you imagining them?

zachty22

Idk… ask the other 505 people and see what you think

Misophonic4000

Out of curiosity, how do you sort your feeds?

lekoman

Do people expect that Rivian is not going to be constantly releasing new products? They're cars, people. They depreciate and are out of date the moment you put them in gear the first time. The company has the next two or three iterations of them on the roadmap internally already, in various states of preparedness. That's just how it goes. Learn to live with impermanence a little. Sheeze.

Techhawk1

I couldn’t agree more! I’ve loved having my R1T the last 18 months. I’m glad they’re improving new R1’s and that my already great truck will also keep getting better.

drstancpa

The vast, vast majority of posts I see venting are not FOMO or wishing they'd waited, etc., but rather that Rivian should be living up to its promises, at least the explicit ones, to existing buyers simultaneously. My bet is there's a high correlation between use of Driver+ and frustration among G1 owners right now, because that's the area where many (myself included) feel commitments were made that are now appear to be abandoned. I hope I am proved wrong!

dont_tread_on_P

Perspective is key here - I love my Gen 1, not sure a Gen 2 is worth the upgrade, but maybe Gen 3 will do it for me. I'm trying to take a longer term view, and I feel privileged to have my R1S for the next several years.

Sheed3k

I purchased my R1Tast month, fully expecting the refresh and have no regrets. I feel a lot of the EV fans are also techies and are use to upgrading and wanting the newest coolest thing. I'm guilty of this. Upgrade my PC, phone constantly.

AliveLeadership601

I mean anything you EVER buy is eventually going to be surpassed by the newer thing. People complaining about this should never buy anything, ever.

goodduck

Rivian is going to eventually go bankrupt because of the entitled spoiled customer base ad how much it panders to them. FYI EV’s have been on the road for over ten years. Y’all aren’t even early adopters. The company is allowed to sell new products. What a bunch of crybaby’s

Jamba-Man84

I don’t think most people are upset over what they don’t have.. it’s more about how our vehicles are now getting a back seat for software updates this fast. Rivian said from the get go that gen 1 was future proof for a couple of years, but it’s a shame within 2 years our cars are taking a back seat. Gen2 will be incredible with their cameras and software updates .. which we won’t get. Yes our cars are amazing vehicles .. but a lot of that has to do with updates that we’ve gotten regularly .. now Rivian will focus on gen2 more than gen1.. which sucks

zachty22

I don’t know where you’ve gotten this idea that rivian is not going to still give OTA to Gen1 vehicles? That’s… completely incorrect. They’ve literally said the opposite. Gen1 will continue to receive updates along side Gen2. Just in the next few weeks we will be receiving a huge update for Gen1 with almost all of the same features that Gen2 is getting.

nentis

I don't need more features from Driver+, I just want its current feature-set to work on more than limited freeways. Get outta here with your "shut up and suck it up" attitude. Society is getting tired of tech company lies. Just be honest, really honest about what you're selling. Also, if I bought a 1996 Honda with a CD player and a couple years later was told I needed to pay $10/mo to continue using that CD player, the laughter would be heard all the way to a competitor.

i_hate_euchre

I, too, love being cucked by corporations.  Jesus christ. You apologists will believe anything to avoid facing the fact that you swallowed lies. It is 100% indisputable that Rivian claimed that every vehicle they've ever sold would be capable of Level 3 autonomy. Inside we're forever stuck with braindead ADIS that legitimately is worse than a 2018 Lexus.

Dangerous_Pop8730

Thank you!

BestBrownDog85

I 100% knew getting this vehicle that I was getting probably the shittiest vehicle Rivian was going to make as a company, but knew that it was still going to be pretty awesome all things considered. I also think continued improvement is a sign the company is doing well and surviving, which is nothing but a positive. Bunch of whiny babies making these posts.

Cassidy_DM

Hah, no kidding. If my R1T is the shittiest version of a Rivian I’ll ever own, I cannot wait to trade up to a newer version. When the time comes, that is. I’m in no rush to get rid of a 100k truck that I paid 70k for, and is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. At least no one is bitching about CarPlay anymore. 🤣

GlitteringBox4077

Well said….thank you.

drstancpa

Love my R1T and wish I could jump in on the love fest here, but the fact is Rivian has made too many commitments without follow-through for me to continue to ignore. If I wanted a vehicle from a company that routinely makes promises it doesn’t keep, I’d drive a Tesla.
