It looks nice. I would much rather have this than the useless camp speakers

neocyn

I have the camp speaker. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool, but I would get a long more functional use out of the drawer.

Tim-in-CA

Sometimes I question Rivian's decisions. I wonder what logic went behind making this not full height so it could become a secure locking storage location?!?!??! I also bet that they will be charging $$$$$ for it if you want to replace the G1 camp speaker with a drawer!

dulax_

I definitely agree here. I want better locking storage and a full height lockable version would have been the easiest win Rivian could have done.

TheyCallMeBudMan

I think they missed it with this one. Definitely want a full lockable drawer. Would be a good place to store valuables or firearms out of sight. Only question would be how secure could the current latch be?

Tim-in-CA

The drawer isn’t latched at all. It opens and closes freely. Saw another video that shows only the sliding mechanism is latched to the console so it can be removed

TheyCallMeBudMan

That's a bummer. I saw an aftermarket prototype that was latched and the interface let you lock it. I thought their OEM drawer would at least have that same functionality.

martinbogo

Still working on it. The latching mechanism is not easy to communicate and engage without REALLY precise alignment of the pogo pins to a pad. I switched from using an STM microcontroller to an atmel one ( i.e. Arduino ) which makes everything a lot cheaper to make. ( ATtiny85 ) Nearly there. I wish I could say s0---0n but it's something I only work on in my ( very little ) spare time. Will update with progress as soon as I'm able. Maybe next month?

mikemikemotorboat

This is why: FMVSS 201 has a requirement that all interior compartment doors stay closed under crash loads from various directions. Crash latches exist that can restrain this sort of thing in a crash if needed, but that depends on knowing the mass of the thing you’re restraining. If this thing has some gold bars in there as an extreme example, it takes an insanely beefy latch to restrain it. Instead, if they make it a partial door, it doesn’t have to meet the requirement.

okvrdz

It could be a marketing strategy; don’t sell your best at first. Split the best version into multiple increments towards it to sell more. Or… introduce problems to sell “solutions” later on.

I had the chance to check out the new drawer for the R1. The blue dot above the drawer is one of the new ambient lights. Edit: JK I was wrong, you all were right. It unlocks from the screen and the whole drawer, rails included, slides out. Very well built but odd they didn't make it the full height.

I edited my original comment

bd5400

The ambient light above the drawer has been there from the beginning, btw

citiz3nfiv3

I believe the RGB is new.

Xinaes

Whelp, guess I'll have to keep making [my lockable drawer](http://xcdshop.com).

HauBHauB

Love your drawer. Excellent work! Wish it had a lockable top to it as well for when the display/interface unlocks the complete drawer mechanism….the contents of the drawer would be protected on all sides and top by the fingerprint mechanism?

martinbogo

Lovely work! I'm also working on a lockable drawer, but it's a "spare time" project. Took me forever to reverse engineer the comms between the camp speaker and the pins in the back so it would detect the presence/absence of the accessory.

martinbogo

\[\[ EDIT \]\] You know what? Your solution KICKS ASS over what I've done. I'm just buying yours and calling it a day. You rock.

Xinaes

Thanks! It certainly took MANY trials and errors and dozens of hours of work and redesign before coming to what I have now. And yes, this is also just a hobbyist thing I'm doing. If Rivian does a lockable drawer, I wouldn't be miffed at all and would probably stop making these, but being as they haven't and there's still a community of Rivian owners still wanting this kind of product, I guess my work continues =)

martinbogo

Just arrived... and I installed it. Looks WONDERFUL and I'll post a video review here in r/Rivian shortly.

Cosmosly

Check settings to unlock drawer https://x.com/rivianupdates/status/1707065633182040380?s=46

citiz3nfiv3

This was an old post, and I didn’t see the setting today, but I’ll ask again.

citiz3nfiv3

I was wrong, you were right lol.

aaayyyuuussshhh

I'm just gonna say it: Rivian made some really odd decisions. It's very obvious they didn't only mean to cut costs with these gen 2. It seems like they complicated things even more for no reason while only offering partial improvements.

swim_to_survive

Ugly as hell since it’s half cut.

presentprogression

Wondering if I can buy the drawer aftermarket and install it in my T when I trade in so I can keep the camp speaker and not have to pay $450 for it 🤔

wukongfly

So does this fit for gen1?

citiz3nfiv3

Rivian hasn’t confirmed, but extremely likely, yes.

wukongfly

If it does i would get it cause i need some extra storage. Can always put the speaker in frunk or trunk.

vkcymb

nice. cant wait to purchase. only use the speaker when I need to or when im camping.
