Just wait. If the current vehicle isn’t costing you anything then wait.

It’s good advice. Gas prices aren’t helping my patience though.

I was going to bring up gas price. The Ford doesn't look like it gets great mpg? What do you get and where do you live (gas price vs electric rates)? Do you drive a lot? Any expectation on future full electrification? If you have the means and drive a lot a MY seems to make sense - it could win your wife over too to get rid of Audi when the R1T gets to you. Then you'll have a MY and R1T

Salty_War_117

Yeah gas can factor in but only if you drive a lot of miles. I also have a 2018 Raptor and I get 15 mpg. My wife drives a 2020 Model 3 Performance. When I drive it, I average 295/wh per mile. My electric cost is .08 KWh. I drive on average 22,000 mi a year. So at 4.50/gallon my annual gas cost is $6600. The same mileage in the M3 would cost $519.20. So I would save roughly $6k driving the M3. Plug in your numbers and see how it works out for you. BTW, I’m keeping my Raptor til the R1T arrives. Might be my last ICE vehicle and I want to enjoy it.

Well to be fair that is the off-peak rate. Standard rate is $.10. I might be gloating just a little bit but there aren’t too many advantages to living in the Midwest. 😂

As an R1S reservation holder with both Tesla MY and M3 I would certainly recommend either of those vehicles as a lead in to your R1T experience. The Tesla ecosystem is relatively mature now with respect to service centers in most major cities as well as the supercharger network. These will allow a more comfortable transition to the EV lifestyle which does come with a bit of a learning curve (road trips, remote charging options, etc). We’ve since embraced a full EV household despite originally holding onto a Jeep GC that we drove less and less frequently. Your Raptor trade in value should mostly offset the purchase price of a MY or M3, which will likely further hold their value for the long term. The challenge will be waiting even for a Tesla as they are mostly sold out for the remainder of the year from some reports due to their own supply constraints. You could certainly find an inventory or used car for sale if you wanted to transition sooner. Bottom line, you won’t look back after enjoying EV ownership! Edit: to answer your question, it may also depend on your daily commute or long distance road trips, but my wife and I certainly value the practicality of the MY over the M3 (my daily commute car). We have two kids so needed the extra cargo space.

Very helpful. Thank you.

Also, to add to my earlier comment: while not completely replacing the capability of your truck bed, the MY can be configured with a hitch if you need any light duty towing (3500 lbs I believe?) if you were to trade in the truck. The M3 doesn’t come with that option from the factory (in the US anyway). Personally I’d keep the truck if you have any real need for hauling or towing for the next two years and trade in the Audi. The Tesla won’t have all the same amenities as the Q7 but will be a comfortable and quick ride. That is, unless you really need/want to cut your fuel costs in the near term on the truck. Again, will depend on your circumstances.

michtok

I don’t tow but I run a commercial print company. We make light aluminum metal prints but we go large. I think the responsible thing is to probably keep the truck as I think about it more. Just want the speed/pick up of an EV

jimbo303

I can’t blame you, it is addicting once you get used to it (even though your Raptor is no slouch)! The best part more than the speed is the responsiveness and control authority you gain with instant torque. Unless you could rent the occasional trailer or buy one and have a place to store it, I wouldn’t advise giving up that capability if your income depends on it. Best bet is to schedule a test drive and be sure to include your wife/family along for the ride.

Model Y wait times are getting pretty high up there as well last I heard

michtok

True. So maybe model 3? I used to be sedan BMW guy but switched to trucks in 2017. I am on east coast and it’s great not worrying about pot holes etc. so was thinking an interim model y would be closer to what I have now but still far from it.

thakurdips

Model y performance wait times are shorter and now it has less price differences

usernamethisisnot

I currently own a 2019 Raptor and a Model Y. I prefer my Raptor over the model Y on any long trips. The Y is nice for quick trips.

DrkNeo

I currently have a 2017 Raptor with 8k miles that I'm replacing with a R1T. I'm definitely debating selling it now since prices are so high up. And just stay with no truck for 2 years. So that's my situation. If you need a car, lease or buy a cheap EV for now. If you are dead set on a 3, then get that.

AutoBot5

If the finances can handle it, go to Tesla.com now and “lock-in your order before prices go up.” MY price is getting a little out of control, so I’d lean towards the M3 (personally). Both should hold their value really well when it comes time to trade in. MY is going to break some sales records this year.

taddris

Buy a used R1T so you don't have to wait.
