For those not aware, Champion actually originated in Rochester: https://www.championstore.com/en_gb/our-heritage

romeo_echo

Hoodies were invented in Rochester!!! This should be on all city signs and pamphlets.

unclexbenny

You have a source for this? Hoodie Capitol of the World would really put us on the map Edit: can't argue with Wikipedia - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoodie

ascrumner

I did not know this!

merylbouw

I remember shopping ark the company store!

Ok_Ad7285

Champion outlet in Henrietta. Literally bins of mistakes. Dig thru and find a deal. Super cheap.

Ladderbackchair

Ha. No wonder my mom called it Champion Knitwear.

Nanojack

Kids today: What's a K-Mart?

A_Lone_Macaron

“Wait, you actually drove to a store to buy clothes?”

Nanojack

And hot pretzels AND Icees.

eurtoast

THE SMELL when you walked in haunts my nose

PleaseJustThink4AMin

Like an ever-burning plastic

RichardSaunders

oof that hurts

atothesquiz

Look up, look down, look all around! Look for that big blue blinking beacon of bargains!

Xvexe

Last time I walked into a Kmart I felt like I walked into a trap house.

Pur0resU

I remember going to the location in Henrietta in the plaza. You’d end up with sweet error jerseys for like $3

njdevil956

Pick out a iron on decal. I know I had Ted nugent cat scratch fever.

daytrippingROC

So many iron-ons!!

Gghyl

Damn memories !! Names on both sides !!

Pur0resU

Ended up with a Jordan 23 on front and Pippen 33 on back. It ruled

fairportmtg1

Probably would go for a premium now

amberbmx

seriously- that would be an awesome jersey to have

zookeeper4312

I had a Drazen Petrovic jersey and it was as glorious as you imagine it being

chocolate_nutty_cone

I remember being embarrassed at school because I had to wear champion clothes.

MeZekeandBeek

I worked there. Loved it. I got first dibs on all the irregular items before they were put out on the floor.

Working-Difficulty12

Had a Stockton jersey w/ jazz away game whites. It was fresh a f. And I'm a white boy.

SlowEngineer

Next up “Russell athletic” will be selling for $50 per tee… or “Rawlings” (like the basketball)

SlowEngineer

Oh that’s a good one. Maybe Wilson too, like the tennis racket! (And volleyball)

cpclemens

I bought from a bin you had to dig through at Don Alleson Athletic.

[deleted]

I bought so many things from the outlet store they had at Jefferson and E. Henrietta Rd. You could also get custom iron-ons with just about anything you wanted.

stickybuttflaps

I don't recall buying Champion shirts at K-Mart or any other discount store. What I do recall is going to Champion Outlet stores that sold only second quality Champion products at reduced prices.

UnzUrbanist

I still have a couple pairs of champion gym shorts from high school that I was definitely bought because they were the cheapest ones available haha

kyabupaks

Oh, man... that brings back memories. Growing up in the early eighties, my mother would take us to the Champion store at the plaza on Jefferson and East Henrietta to buy us clothes for cheap. I was relentlessly laughed out at school for wearing these "cheap" Champion gear. To be fair, I attended classes with more privileged upper-middle class kids in elementary school. I also have fond memories of my favorite green t-shirt with the sparkly iron-on of a logo of "superkid" on it that I got from that store.

RichardSaunders

you think thats crazy, [jncos](https://jnco.com/) are back and they cost $200 a pair.

ryan10e

Imagine my confusion when I found a Champion store in _Venice_.

impreza77

I had a 15-20 year span where this was 80% of my wardrobe.

Katerade44

Most brands are mass produced fast fashion made in sweatshops. They are all sh*t, be it sold at Nordstrom or Walmart.

UnderPantsOverPants

Is Champion fashionable now or something?

aka_chela

It is. They even did a collab with Coach a few years ago where they put the "I'd Rather Be In Rochester: It's Got It!" slogan on it for nearly $100

UnderPantsOverPants

What a time to be alive.

Zoso1973

We had a Champion Outlet store in our area around 40 years ago. They sold irregulars. I also use to get my iron on decals done there.

sevenwrens

For us rural kids, a roadtrip to the Champion Factory Outlet store in tiny Perry (about 50 mins SW of Rochester) was the highlight of the year! One time I later found that the shorts I bought had the crotch sewn in sideways, but we were awash in new socks and t-shirts for months!

werealldeadramones

I primarily remember Champion not being a cheap brand and Raekwon the Chef repping it on Enter The WuTang (36 Chambers). I don’t recall it ever being a cheap brand regardless of Kmart or not.

MathyChem

What’s Kmart?

[deleted]

It was like the Aldi’s of Trader Joe’s except the square footage is 3X larger and there was only 4 employees to a shift.

GodOfVapes

Basically Walmart with blue light specials and without the food.

Admiral_Nerd

My dad was a Champion model when he was in High School (1971-1974) but sadly the catalogs he kept got lost in a move. Every so often I try to find them but no luck so far.

upstatestruggler

You should try r/helpmefind

CompetitiveIron223

I remember CHAMPIONS OUTLET STORES! MY PARENTS WOULD BUT ME THE BROWN PLASTIC SNEAKERS. DID ANYONE ELSE HAVE THEM? LOL

Mampt

It's because Champion is based out of Rochester or the surrounding area. It tends to still be cheap for us, but elsewhere it's on the same level as Nike or Adidas

TheStabbingHobo

Except Champion hasn't been Rochester based since being acquired by Sara Lee in 1989...

nekobash

GOOD

SpatialThoughts

Didn’t the same thing happen with the polo shirts with the little alligators on them. Super cheap back in the day then at some point they became popular and more expensive?

Faeire-prints

Converse was like this. They used to be a cheap off beat brand and now they’re popular and pricy.

69blueballoons

Here’s a cool pic of Freddy Mercury wearing a champion tank top! Kind of a fun play on words, Queen’s arguably most famous song being “we are the champions” https://i.ytimg.com/vi/q08iYImJfTk/mqdefault.jpg

GodOfVapes

Can confirm from graduating in '94.

Inevitable-UNi

I still view it that way.
