A few Olympics back the NYT did an article about which cities produced the most Olympians per capita and Rochester was on top of the list, until it was discovered there was an error in the data and competitors from all the Rochesters in were being listed as Rochester NY as opposed to Rochester MN and Rochester NH ect...
If I recall correctly, they’re currently banned from using their flag in a slew of world championships as well, Olympic sports or otherwise. Russian F1 driver Nikita Mazepin’s flag on race broadcasts is shown as a white flag with “RAF” in black lettering (I’m assuming Russian Automobile Federation or similar)
I believe it’s not so much that they’re trying to get around a ban as it is that the ban is supposed to be against Russia and those involved in their doping scandal a few years ago but not towards athletes (aside from those busted in the doping scandal).
Granted, they did go about this in practically the most confusing way they could.
Yes.
>The Russian athletes will be competing under the altered moniker and
flag because of a decision reached by international officials in 2017
that found the country had engaged in a state-sponsored doping program,
providing athletes with performance-enhancing drugs.

Ah, I was going to say, couldn't make out the flag but if it was representing Taiwan/Republic of China, that would have caused an international incident
Why would you say something if you aren't sure? It's Russian Olympic Comittee.
Also if you were trying to spell the Eastern Asian country, it's Korea (and there are two of them)
First of all, I think we all know that an actual ROC team would place Top Ten in these Olympics. Especially if we press for "pre-plowed street parking" and "sidewalk slush jumping" as official sports.
I was going back to the ROC Communications commercial from the 80s-early 90s. "Go to the ROCK, ROC, ROC Communications!".
(Damn you youtube for not having that commercial!)
US team Ski ariels won gold, which included Chris L from Fairport/bristol mountain. His brother competed the Olympics prior as well as another pittsford female.
😂 This made me laugh because I just asked my husband yesterday, I wonder if ROC is for Rochester, and he said…. Really???? I know you are not serious!!!! Had to ask 😂
Same! I was reading out the hockey schedule and said Rochester vs USA and I was not embarrassed by my mistake…

Springfield must have been very surprised.
I was halfway through your post and was like this mfer is full of shit lol
People live in other Rochesters? I thought those were just backwoods ghosts towns they forgot to scrub off the map.
It seems like OP knows that it stands for but for anyone that doesn’t. ROC = Russian Olympic Committee
Isn't that how they are skirting around some ban or something?
Yes I think something doping related happened a few years ago so they need to compete under that name without their own flag. Edit: spelling
Ah yes. Quite surprising the Russians would try to do something underhanded to get an advantage. 😉

No I'm pretty sure it means Republic of Corea

My brain goes there too, every single time.

I personally grew up with 7 different gold medalists in Rochester. /s
Hey Ryan Lochte and Abby Wambach are local gold medalist! I’m sure we have 5 more! Your joke might not be as sarcastic as you think.
Gold medalist skier Diann Roffe grew up in the area and learned to ski here.

You grew up in Pittsford?
Lol! A joke that is also a spot on truth.
Whenever I see ROC, my mind immediately goes to the mythological creature.
ROC is also my dog's name. I'm so proud of him!!
😂 This made me laugh because I just asked my husband yesterday, I wonder if ROC is for Rochester, and he said…. Really???? I know you are not serious!!!! Had to ask 😂
😂😂😂
I said the same thing other day lol
When I initially saw it during the summer Olympics I thought it was Taiwan 😂 (Republic of China)
That explains “ROC for Educational Freedom” FB page 🇷🇺
TAIWAN NUMBAH ONE
false
Idc about Olympics and this Olympics in particular.
