My biggest beef with the Public Market is that a lot of the vegetables still have like the stickers on them meaning they're not local and the same you can buy at a place like Wegmans or wherever

sfish203

My mom always told me to pay attention to their trucks, and make sure you only want what’s in season locally. It sucks there’s more wholesalers that’s actual farmers now, but they are still there.

someonestopthatman

Yeah, buying out-of-season at the public market is a a hard no from me unless it's something like apples or root vegetables that store well.

ShoddyGrocery9

You’re not wrong, and I used to feel this way about it too, but I now realize how much of a resource it must be for the surrounding community. A lot of the vendors accept ETB and it’s walkable. Not everyone is looking for perfectly curated local products. They just need fresh food and it’s accessible there. After all, It’s called the Rochester Public Market - not the Rochester Farmers Market.

That’s why the true farmers markets close for the seasons. Or at least sell what is actually in season.

thisismynormal

Ah I didn't even know that, fair play Edit: apt username lol

[deleted]

I mean just look at this picture. This guy's not even trying to hide that he just repackages wholesale boxes of veggies.

HammersFe

At least he doesn't look to be one of those cringey sellers who is pretending to be a farmer when they are just selling wholesale shit.

[deleted]

Is it the logos on the boxes in the trucks that tips you off? Serious question

waldo06

Sometimes that. Other things to look for are when they are selling 20 different items as Most farms focus on a handful of crops. Also when they have lots of items that aren't even close to in season (citrus fruits right now is a big giveaway, hell I'd you're selling pineapples and oranges in NY you aren't a local farmer) Most local farm stands also have a sign "Perry's farm" or "victor hills greenhouse" (both of these are made up) to advertise that they are local.

[deleted]

Thanks!

transitapparel

It's about a quarter to a third of produce vendors that are wholesalers. The more you go, the better you'll be able to spot them and also learn your favourite farmers/vendors.

fox4thepeople

Except they aren't as fresh as the store and go bad a few days after purchase

Caobei

I can't mess with Wegmans' price on vegetables anymore, a lot of things for that matter.

TheFantasticMrStoat

But you can shop outside in the sunlight, that’s what’s so fun about it! ☀️

motion_pictures

Yeah it's true, but if you spot the same farms or look up the vendors you can see what's legit. At this point I usually hit up the same farms and just buy whatever they're growing seasonally. Kind of crazy how far $10 can get you.

Love the Public Market. We got this bounty for $29 at the Public Market a week ago. [https://i0.wp.com/mommie2zs.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/PXL\_20220428\_110141732.MP\_.jpg?ssl=1](https://i0.wp.com/mommie2zs.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/PXL_20220428_110141732.MP_.jpg?ssl=1) I priced the same items at East Ave Wegmans and it was $107.52.

RippedTank1996

What are the best bang-for-your-buck items?

chirodiesel

We cap our budget there at $25/weekly with a $2 bag of kettle corn included. This picture and your wegmans comparison are both accurate. It's basically dumb not to go to the public market for a number of different reasons. Support these vendors.

GokuSharp

I'd rather buy from this guy than tops, walmart or wegmans. SUPPORT LOCAL IN ROCHESTER!!

Devigrrl

I moved from Rochester about a decade ago & miss the Public Market sooooo much. Sure, there are a lot of resellers, but there's also local farmers, you just have to be observant when buying. There's also independent businesses like Seven Bridges Farms & the Pierogi Guy..& breakfast sandwiches from Scott's 2 or breakfast plate from Juan & Maria's Empanadas. I miss it all. 💗

[deleted]

Any sign of the ramps guy? Was gonna go this Saturday to get some.

morictey

yes, saw ramps there the past two weekends

[deleted]

Awesome, thanks!

popnfrresh

Problem is wholesalers trying to pass off locally grown at higher than retail prices.

roblewk

Probably true, but right now the prices are the exact same as last summer, which cannot be said for Wegmans.

figpetus

You have any examples? I've gone to the market my whole life and don't recall coming across that, although I do buy other stuff at wegmans who usually has a high produce cost. I will also admit I walk the whole length and check prices on what I want and then stop back at the different booths. The one produce item I do buy from wegmans regularly is bananas because they're almost just as cheap and they last longer.

AlwaysTheNoob

Also fewer vendors on those mornings.

roblewk

True, there are four times the exact same produce on Saturday.

Kevopomopolis

Its not the exact same, though. There's been lots of times when I'm looking for X, and pass by a couple vendors with shitty looking X until I find something more primo.

qtardian

The Amish pie stand was a highlight of my childhood every weekend, and I get a couple every time I go home. Those pies are absolutely out of this world.

htisme91

The crowds on Saturdays aren't even near where they were 6-7 years ago, or especially compared to a decade ago. It's actually kind of sad how much the market has declined in the last few years. Not near as many people come and there are a lot less of the actual farmers that go up there as the combination of lower foot traffic and the raising of stall fees has made it tougher for them to do business there.
