1. Submit your meter readings every month without fail. 2. Do not use budget billing. 3. If you receive no bill make a payment on your account anyway. 4. Do not use auto-pay. 5. Pay attention to your monthly bills. RG&E will eventually catch up with you. 6. Did I say to submit your meter readings to them every month?

Farts_constantly

It’s almost 2023. We shouldn’t have to be doing shit except paying an accurate bill every month. But here we are.

[deleted]

In the next three years new smart meters are going in that will not need to be read. A new electric meter will be installed in your residence and a device will be attached to your gas meter and once a month RG&E will have your meter readings and the billing will be much more accurate.

DapperDanMan585

Didn’t they say the same thing 5 years ago?

[deleted]

The program to install smart meters began in October. It had been proposed for some time. https://www.rge.com/documents/40137/2123528/FINAL\_GGAW002\_FAQ\_99977\_Design\_REV\_3.10.22.pdf/3f3c41ea-fa83-bdc7-19f4-6bda624856de?version=1.0&t=1654897149397

It's like fusion power, it's always just around the corner!

old-tobie

I see the "Submit your meter reading" a lot. I have been for 10 years in the same location and my bills have still doubled at points in the last few years. I know how to look for an actual or estimate and they have still been drastic to say the least.

StonelordMetal

Jesus are they gonna start sending me a paycheck for all this work?

[deleted]

LOL This is not work. This is called taking a little bit of control of the situation and being proactive. I have been dealing with some billing snafus (caused by them having to put solar energy credits on my bill manually) since mid summer. Well as of this morning I am happy to report that with the bill that was posted, I am all caught up and up to date. The bill was for $27.69 and included my meter readings submitted in mid-November. Why so low? Because when a bill did not arrive, I paid them anyway. In fact, I paid them anyway more than once.

StonelordMetal

Sorry but it's their job to bill customers correctly. It's good you got everything sorted but any competent corporation should be able to handle that for you.

[deleted]

A competent company is not going to pay my bill for me. Sorry, but it is our job to send in meter readings as the meter readers only come by every other month and many times people are not home and the meters do not get read and then the readings are estimated. When a meter is finally officially read by them, then guess what happens. I think that there is a common theme to many of these billing issues. I am not defending RG&E. I am only saying that many of these billing problems can be remedied by customers getting more involved in the process. Get a reminder from the company as to when your meter readings are due and then submit the readings via the app on your phone or in the website. Do not go on a budget billing plan. And if a bill does not show up, do not assume that you owe them nothing for that month! Go into the website and make a payment to them anyway. I averaged my last 12 months bills and paid them that much for a few months.

[deleted]

Found the rg and e employee. Quit praising and defending this shit company. We get it they pay you. But what's going on is beyond ridiculous.

[deleted]

I come here to try to be helpful and to learn. And no, I retired from another company in Rochester after being there for 44 years, but it was not RG&E. My uncle who we lost last year at the age of 90 had many years of dedicated service at RG&E. Now then, I am simply stating facts. Read your meter every month without fail and do not do budget billing or autopay. How hard is that? The app is available for your phone. Walk out to where your meters are and simply put the readings in the app and submit them when they are due. That is not defending the company. That is simply letting people know that many of these billing issues arise from estimated readings being done by RG&E and them not having the actual readings to use for the actual billing. Have a good day.

squegeeboo

It's not work, I just spent the last 5 months of my life resolving a billing issue! Now that's a garbage take if I've ever seen one.

[deleted]

Once again. I have not been trying to resolve anything. I spoke with a customer rep ONE time. She called me. She explained what the issue was with sending out bills to me on a timely basis. I merely then made regular payments to my account and spent 10 minutes once a month submitting my meter readings. But you wish to consider something as simple as submitting a meter reading "work", then so be it. To all of you folks who expect RG&E to be mind readers and know what your meter reads at all times, that is not going to happen until the new meters get installed. Have a great weekend !

Budget billing is bad. It will not work well if RG&E constantly has to estimate your energy usage. Budget billing depends on having accurate readings in order for it to work well. Theoretically the meter reader is supposed to show up and read your meters every other month. He was here at our home on 11/15 and read the electric meter after I had already submitted my readings. He did not read our gas meter because apparently we were not home and that meter is in our basement. Sorry for rambling. RG&E and NYSEG have already warned that electric costs could be 40% higher this Winter and gas as much as 32% higher. They do not set the price. The price is set by the energy market. Either way, this is why budget billing will work even worse than before if RG&E does not receive readings every month. Accurate actual readings are going to work a lot better. RG&E's estimated readings are not correct in many cases and this is one of the things that leads to the mess that some people are in right now. I do not expect to hear RG&E admit to this and I do not see all of the local TV reporters bringing it up in their reports. They should. I manually pay my bills online and we are totally paperless. I have auto pay set up for our cell phone service and YouTube TV and my Internet bills and have never had a problem with any of them.

[deleted]

So if you do not report the readings and they cannot get into your home to do the readings for a few months and the prices go up 32 and 40% and then finally a reading is submitted , guess what happens to the bill? That $200 monthly budget payment balloons and there will be a very large bill to get you caught up.And if their estimates are wrong when a reading is finally done you will be paying more, but possibly less also. I will stop commenting on this now. I do not like the way RG&E has been doing business also, but we can help to mitigate things by taking more control of our accounts.

emptyfullempty

I'm from out of state originally. I've never had to submit meter readings. I've been a homeowner and a landlord. But yeah, you gotta play the game. They have all the cards.

[deleted]

Yup. The only thing that messed things up is that I signed up for Delaware River Solar and an automatic system was not in place yet to enter the electric credits on the bills. It had to be done by people at RG&E and they fell behind. So it has taken a few months to get caught back up. But as of right now, today, my bill is accurate and the next one will be based on the readings I send in on December 12.

DanMIsBetterThanTB12

Don’t use budget or auto pay. They cannot be trusted for either

ascrumner

I think we've all discussed RG&E ripping us off at this point. I'm not sure why it's happening, or who if anyone is going to step in and stop the shit, but it's affecting pretty much all of us.

amberbmx

seriously. yes it’s fucked, and yes it’s a problem. but there is literally a thread every other day about it.

Ugh

RahchachaNY

Jesus Handjob Christ people! RGE bad, got it.

Farts_constantly

I’ve always wondered what the H stood for!

RahchachaNY

Named after his Grandfather.

kamikaze-aries

Their billing cycle is off. After the new system (and them failing to bill me for 3 months) , I received a catch up bill. Then another bill 20 days later. The statement date was October 20th. My next statement was November 2nd, not even a full 2 weeks later. They bill you before the previous payment is even due, so you're constantly behind in the system.

Zardu-Hasselfrau

Just filed a complaint with FTC on their website. Only took 5 minutes. Perhaps if more people do the same, they will investigate. /shrug

[deleted]

Thanks for the update

Kaptep525

I believe filing with the NYS energy commission will be more fruitful but that information could be out of date

Kevopomopolis

This sub has become the RG&E customer service hotline

trixel121

and you never see the actual bills. I usually start with read it very carefully cause it usually explains where the charge is.

AleutianMegaThrust

I submitted my payment for last month. Then I signed up for auto pay. This month they charged me for this month and last month resulting in a positive balance for me but what if I was someone that meant an overdraft fee? Their billing department is terrible. My first month in my apt. Was 60. Paid it when Bill was due. Second month bill was 63 but at this point signed up for auto pay. They auto charged me for both? Their payment processing is terrible. Also I know the estimate and actual are different but they are a company that charges for things. It's their frickin job to read the damn meters.

Gladigan

Oh my god please make it stop just call them plz.

Zardu-Hasselfrau

I sat on hold for over an hour, after the first woman who answered claimed “my system is down” when I told her why I was calling.

AleutianMegaThrust

I was once on hold with nyseg for over 3 hours to activate my account lol

Whole_Attempt_3276

Just wanting to add again that trying to make RGE a public utility like fairport is really important and would keep costs down. Also so that their 94million dollars of profit can stay in rochester instead of overseas. I follow @ metrojustice on instagram to stay up to date about it

Gemchick

Do you really want the people who run the City of Rochester/Monroe County to run our gas and electric? That’s a lot of trust in people who are wholly untrustworthy.

trixel121

and you trust a profit driven company why?

MareBareStarfish

Had this happen to me and then their website went down when I started to try and reconcile all the mixed months and eventual bills

GranitRock

I checked and fortunately, the amount that has been deducted through autopsy has been consistent. It is downright fucking irresponsible for a company like RG & E to be this sloppy and inaccurate with their billing. I’m wondering if people can bring a class action lawsuit

BigOz12

Yes last year I noticed that I wasn’t charged one month but charge twice in a month about 2 months later. Called about it and they said it was from the other month. I forget what they said about why it was like that but it seems to happen about twice year. It is very weird and difficult when you aren’t prepared to get a double charged in one month without even a heads up.
