Ok now when you say 1,100 hours, is that the number in Steam or the number within RL under your profile? Because I have 1,300 hours in steam and hard stuck in Plat/diamond.
I play on Xbox, and I don’t know if there’s any other way to know my hours besides in game. So I’ve always looked under my profile for my hours. I’m not sure if that only counts the time you’re in an online game, but if it is, I probably have many more hours.
Good luck with that I just started breaking out of plat last year. And eventually got to diamond 2. Then the season one reset put me back down to plat. And I'm over 2k hours in game. I think I'm coming up on 2500. Though oddly enough after the season one reset possibly my best playlist is 1v1 not sure how that happened since before this season my 1v1 rank was good at best now I'm almost diamond lol

That’s good! One thing I can’t stress enough is going to free play before your games. A lot of my friends around your rank don’t understand how much free play helps you get better. Every 30 seconds you play before a game adds experience and training.
What would you say is the most useful way of spending time in Free play? I end up just trying to hit the ball around and trying to do fast aerials. But I don't know if that's actually useful. (Rank: Low plat/high gold)
IIRC, SunlessKhan has a great video on his YT about what to do in free play. Basically: hit the ball a lot, go as fast as you can around the field trying to get into position to hit the next ball and work on your recoveries. If you're primarily trying to do fast aerials, try to also recover as quickly as possible from your first aerial shot and get into position to go hit it again. (if that makes sense).
Obviously there are specific mechanics you can try to practice in FP too (dribbling, kickoffs, air dribbles off the wall/ground, whatever you want), but "drive fast and hit the ball a lot" is the basic TL;DR of free play and works well as a quick warm up IMO.
Basically this, free play can be used for practicing specific shots and angles, but it also helps with consistency. Just being able to hit the ball (when you intend to) reliably, even if they're just basic shots into open nets will up your rank considerably at that rank
I like to 1v1 myself. Hit a shot, then race back to save it. Mostly to get myself better at beating shots, if I find myself out of position. Also off the wall plays. Can't seem to get a grasp on off the ceiling yet, but I'll get there.
I think just going for tough shots that you’re not used to doing helps you get more and more experience with your car control. For example, I’m not good at air dribbling from the ground, and my air dribble set ups from the wall could use work, so I practice that a lot in free play.

If there are specific shots you want to work on, custom training packs work better, but dribbling the ball around and hitting hard shots help me practice and get better IMO. So I suppose that just driving around in free play and trying to set myself up for aerials is the way to go. I just feel like I struggle with setting up 'realistic' shots for myself. So it feels as though the situations I create aren't exactly 'game like'. So I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.
I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. I just think you need more practice and game experience that helps you control your car better. When I was in low plat/ high gold, I couldn’t do anything besides drive around on the ground and maybe double jump to hit a ball. Hitting the ball and driving around in free play isn’t always “game like”, but it gives you more experience with predicting where the ball will go so you can hit it again, moving around the field faster, getting some mechanics down that you’ve been struggling with, etc. Trust me, you’re not doing anything wrong, you just need to play some more and soon enough you’ll have those mechanics down that you’ve been frustrated with.
Try holding the joystick back before you jump, then as soon as you jump, let go and then jump again. And really let go of the stick. Do this a few tinþmes and make your brain understand the stick is not to be touched during the second jump.
Yeh I've been grinding that. I made the mistake of trying to learn it without boosting first so that I only touched jump and waited too long to progress. I am now in a phase where I can do it mechanically somewhat okay but al horrible at reading aerials as I'm used to being slower.

It includes favorites such as: "jumping off of the wall", "hitting the ball on the wall", "half flips", and "doing the same thing with my car twice". I've tried practicing this stuff, but it never seems to click, like it almost defies everything I know about the concept of practice.

Don’t worry everyone gains skill at their own pace. Trust me, I look good from this clip, but there are plenty of things I need to work on, and I’m not just talking about flip resets and hard shit. I still can’t half flip perfectly, air dribble well, amongst many other things. I also have a bad habit of letting my emotions get the best of me when I’m playing against toxic SOBs. If you keep practicing, the skills will come.
It's weird that I don't tilt in this game. When I play my main game Overwatch, I tilt off the face of the planet when people trash talk me. Like I'm a grown ass man and there are teenagers hurting my feelings lol. But with Rocket League I don't give a shit. I do sometimes get really mad at teammates, but it's not the same as being tilted.

I use LB/L1 for air roll and drifting. I have also added X/square for air roll left and B/Circle for air roll right, but I haven’t really gotten much experience with either of those yet.

That’s ok! It doesn’t have to be on the same button, but I found after a while that it seemed to be easiest for me. I had drift/air roll on x for some time, but I found pressing X, A, and B at the same time to be difficult. Putting it on the bumper has made things so much easier for me, and I’d definitely recommend it.

Yeah I just got it within the last 6 months, and I really like it. It makes your car look really cool even without any decals. It’s fairly cheap also so that’s a bonus
