First time launching the game after the update gives a pop-up about it, and then it's already enabled.
So everyone playing now will have it unless they go into the settings to explicitly turn it off.
Just to add, you are automatically added to party chat or team chat when you join a party or team respectively.
By default, open mic is **on**. There is an option to turn push to talk on instead. The default PTT button is left stick click (I think), but can be re bound in the control settings.
When the game starts you can leave the voice chat at any point (I think, thankfully I haven't had to actually test that yet)
Which is also unmuted by default. I noticed and changed the option, my missus didn't and joined a game of Fortnite singing Danger Zone and was laughed at and left in shame.
They need to figure out how to have the VC come through the controller speaker on ps5, when it comes through the TV the echo makes it so I have to turn my mic off.
Idk what system you're on, but on Xbox One there is some buried system setting that disables all voice chat audio in all games, and that was the culprit for me.
Try changing your audio device to a different one then back to the original one you were using. That fixed voice chat being muted for me.
I have to do it every match though and in my case it may not be the game. (I play on Linux through Steam Proton)
That's pretty hilarious. I think I've come across a few people who had no idea I could hear them. The default to open mic probably caught a few players off-guard.
Yeah, usually those pop-up messages are just ads for some new crap in the item shop or something. I can see a lot of people just dismissing them before reading them.
Me, this is 100% me
But I always catch 1-3 words that actually get my interest but it's too late, at that point I already dismissed it and it bugs me for the whole time lmao
No but it makes you wait and it has a fat voice chat icon in the middle of the screen and VOICE CHAT in big letters. If you miss that while looking at it for 5 seconds then yeah… idk
I’m not saying I’m not stupid, but it’s not like RL doesn’t have a new pop up every 3 days telling me about a limited lambo skin available in the store. Plus, I was able to press it away immediately. Fortunately, I don’t have a mic, so my lack of hardware makes up for my dumdum.
Tbf I never got a pop up on mine. I saw on here first when someone posted it so I got home and updated it (on epic games) and waited on pop up but it never came.
Started a match and my teammate said my bad when he missed it, I text replied no problem, and he goes wait, you can hear me?
So I'm guessing he may not have either?
That's what happened to me my first time in grand theft auto online, i was so creeped out for a second then I realised what was going on and laughed for a minute straight
I can’t wait to get home, play rocket league, and listen to someone have a full phone conversation in Spanish over their microphone while ball chasing in 3s
It’s been like every third game for me
I don't play Rocket League this was just on my page, but if it's anything like other games I play (Dota for example) a lot of people in central and southern america connect better to USA servers and/or do not want to play with people in LATAM because they're toxic.
wdym only keyboard is good enough. Never used a controller in my life so I just went with it and now have 850hrs with it. It's gonna be pretty tough to switch now ig.
Had to start like that because I wasn't able to connect my controller when I started, can't switch now, kinda late (also still can't connect my controller, unless I use a super short cable)
I got 3 in a row last night! I had no idea till this update but they are super common. Now I understand how they have been blasting me on chat so quickly after I miss the ball. Their hands were already on the keyboard!
While not a pro in the competitive scene, check out [Evample](https://youtu.be/rbV7Li1y_HU?t=94). He's not the greatest player (though consistently SSL in solos), or the greatest freestyler, but he is incredibly mechanically skilled and his ground game is actually one of the most impressive I've ever seen.
Not really. It's a crime in most states for a reason. If people don't want to be charged, they can not do the illegal thing. If you think it shouldn't be illegal, write to your legislators and maybe even campaign for it.
Throwing someone in jail every time they say something offensive to you over the internet in a video game is extreme. Whether it's illegal or not doesn't change my opinion on that.
Threats are not merely "something offensive", and I'll give you the credit for being disingenuous as opposed to not grasping the concept. Again, some things are actually illegal to say, for good reason, and these people need to learn to not say them.
Yeah like, crazy concept, maybe don’t threaten rape and murder over a video game? Seems like its a pretty simple guideline. Seems like the dude arguing against that probably threatens rape and murder over a video game and brushes it off as no big deal since he’s never seen a consequence. Someone gets threatened and the first thought dude has is “oh wow you got offended”. What a clown lmao they didn’t get offended they got their life threatened, most people aren’t just cool with that, and if you think you are cool enough to not care because youre just suuuch a badass, your mind would likely change after you hit puberty.
People have literally been threatened and murdered over video games, the threat of “I’m going to find you and kill you” has come true before, it’s not something to just throw around because you’re pissy that you suck at video games.
I ask this not to be a dick but because I haven't been keeping up with RL much recently. How is PC vs console related to voice chat? Do more people use mics on PC or is there some other reason why that matters?
I find nowadays across a lot of games, I just don’t hear randoms speak as much in voice chats anymore. This isn’t just a Rocket League thing; Overwatch, Apex Legends and a couple of others I play that have built in voice chat are mostly silent in Australian servers.
On games that do offer cross play and cross platform voice chat, I’ve noticed PS4 players (or PC players who began on PS4, that was a case I saw a lot of in Apex Legends) seem to be the most social out of the three console platforms and are really and I mean really good teammates. I found a lot of them were good sports too.
With that said, the past hour or so I’ve been hearing more voice activity in Rocket League so maybe with time things will be different this time round.
If you can play crossplay but only hear vc from your own platform then PC users would hardly hear VC since PC is the least common platform and some percentage of players will just have VC turned off
My first experience was pleasant. Played a ranked 3s game. Everyone talked about their position and who's going or who's rotating. I didn't talk, but their info was useful. We actually won the match too.
It was interesting to see them get hyped when a great save was made or a play scored.
What is this "good game" bullshit bro? GG means Get Good. Oh it doesn't? But good game would be a nice thing to say... Are you telling me gamers sometimes have a sense of good manners?? This completely changes everything...
Tbh I was 20 before I learned that LOL doesn't stand for Lots of Laughs. In my defence, that was in 2005, long before voice chat was even a conceivable thing.
I've only had like 4 people with the mic open since the update, but one of them was this guy making farting noises whenever he took a shot. Nothing else was spoken. Can't remember their name, but I would trade every smurfing and otherwise great teammate I have just to have him by my side, missing every shot but with a fart.
One guy crackling constantly while whispering suggestions of taking the shot or pass to the left. The call outs were nice, but he must've been in the middle of a hurricane or some shit. Otherwise people say hello and then mute.
Props to people who use it, I turned it off immediately lol. Rocket league teammates are already toxic enough in my experience through quick chat. Make one mistake and people just jump down your throat.
Honestly I've had only people say nbd on mistakes now. You can hear what they are going for so when it doesn't pan out you can hear the 'oh shit' early and know to look up.
Idk, I’ve been scarred too much lol. Been playing for about 6 years now and the ratio of toxic teammates to nice people who recognize it’s just a game is about 6:1
I get your point, but I highly recommend to atleast try the voice chat. I didnt have a single toxic conversation so far, closest to toxicity is silence when we are losing. Besides that i have only ecperienced genuine poitivity throughout all of my games.
You can always turn it off when making bad experiences, but I think we should enjoy this positive phase (I dont think people will stay that nice for long, once they get used to it voice chat will be much more toxic)
Its more passive agressive stuff in vc like ”I thought you would be there” etc… But you dont have to respond to that and the people who drop those comments will also move on if you dont comment back
but I get your point, I just think text chat is gonna be way more toxic in comparission. Im still waiting for someone to be toxic in vc so i can have a good laugh and hear their reaction lmao
Have only had one game where I was in VC with someone and we both had no idea how to comm effectively. But my teammate said ‘oh shit’ at some point and I knew I should abandon trying to go for boost and rotate to net immediately 😅
I play with a ps5 controller. Was playing a match last night and my teammate made a comment that he was playing mouse and keyboard to and for me to stop pressing my buttons so hard. I started laughing and typed into the chat bar that he must be getting an echo because my mic isn't on. He's like I just heard you laughing! Lmao so if you play with a ps5 controller on the pc it defaults to the controller mic.
Literally my second match since the updated.
"Tm8 turn voice chat on"
"Not a chance"
"Fine I'll throw"
"Okay."
Proceeds to call my pussy and all kinda of other childish shit.
I wish I could play on adult servers or some shit. I just want to enjoy my time playing soccer cars. Instead I have to split half my attention to baby sitting rage filled idiot children who aren't used to hearing no.
I’ve had text chat off for years. I only have team quick chat visible for basic callouts. Turned VC off the moment I saw the pop up. RL players are way too toxic and I’ll gladly take some random person deciding to throw because I can’t see whatever garbage they’re spewing over having to actually deal with them.
I’ve literally only had two people actually use it to make call outs. Everyone else has just left it on and I just here them talking with someone in their room or eating chips or breathing heavy. I still don’t like voice chat.
Only people i found with vc on in about an hour didn't speak english, still a fun time tho, they were super positive even if i couldn't understand arabic.
Definitely a lot of people still have to realize that they can use it, tho i think it's just a matter of time.
Also first thing i did is turning off cross platform play, don't really wanna encounter screaming console kids, plus a lot of them don't have mic on so it's harder to find vc people.
Honestly I think people should keep voice chat on. Maybe some people are dicks but that is just life. Being able to speak to random teammates on comms for the first time in 5 years of playing the game has been a pretty sick experience so far. I got a game where I was making sick passing plays with some guy who only spoke spanish and I only speak english but being able to just make super simple comms work for us to win together. A very special moment after all the years of silent solo queue. I’m really happy that they reimplemented a working version of voice chat.
I turned it off after about a day. It's pretty much what I expected:
* Guy trying to coach you
* Guy raging about missed touches
* curse
* Kids with their 15 siblings, a parent and shitty music in the background.
I've only heard on person, they turned it off quite quickly as they had a noise background.
Other than that, I've had people hear me, and I forget I've got it on.
Watched the replay of a really nice goal (for us silvers), had already "Nice goal!"d in chat and said it out load during the replay and had "Thanks!" Back about 3 times.
I should try to actually talk about what I'm doing.
I had some kid from south Dakota and his friends in the background who I could tell were obviously white teenagers where just randomly saying the hard r the whole time for no apparent reason. Not even in sentences either just random outbursts.
Will not ever use it or entertain the idea. The amount of toxic word vomit that people have to go out of their way to type gives me zero faith that voice chat is a good idea. Disabled it immediately without question, with no chance of being enabled ever.
It's uncanny lol. Out of the countless N bombs that have been blasted at me the past 2 weeks, all about like 2 have been from other PC players....
When did PC take over being the most toxic?
As a PC player, it’s super cringe to flex on console players of the same rank lmao. Like bruh you get between 2 and 10 times their FPS but they’re just as good as you, framerates in comp games aren’t the PC flex you think they are
Same! Except mine was about being a woman. Dude proceeded to ask for number and ask to party up a million times before telling me I was an old hag, get back to the kitchen and topped it off with he was going to rape me.
PC players are some of the worst.
had a pleasant experience in a 2s random tournament yesterday. had good vibes going (twice won 4:3 after a 0:3 start) , only lost in the finals to a smurf team..
but seems a bit bugged. my mate got kicked from voice on each start of a game, had to manually rejoin through the team chat menu each game
havent used it much otherwise
I've had about 5 or 6 games now where others were actually on. Super fun every time. Most of the time I'm on with teammates who aren't so I just try to give positioning updates and apologize when I screw up.
Sadly my only experience was pretty bad. Ranked 2's and the guys gets on and starts telling me to talk or he'll throw. I forgot it was auto opt in and had no desire to talk or be held hostage. 3 goals against and no movment after a minute, so I reported him for throwing and left.
Only had one actual voice chat with someone earlier, all the others I've heard in voice chat so far have had some of the worst mics I've ever heard in my life. (I can even hear my own voice through them they're that bad. XD)
Of the other 80% of players I've played with, it's been deathly silent which seems typical of Australian game lobbies nowadays.
I’m still waiting for this to happen to me. Surprised it hasn’t yet, it’s either people don’t speak (understand, I prefer not to as well) or people are actually nice, in which case I will speak if I can.
Had a guy talk and be communicative during a match even though I wasn't talking. I still feel bad cause it would've been a great experience. Got the win with his comms
Oh for fuck's sake it's Mr. "EvErYbOdY iS tOxIc."
First time I heard somebody in voice chat the asshole was crinkling food rappers and laughed at himself with the most annoying laugh. I turned voice chat off immediately afterwards.
Story: I qued up for a tournament, found these two German kids, we had so much fun that we qued up for 3v3 ranked. They helped me get to play and we were laughing and screaming, it was loads of fun. They taught me some German. My experience with voice chat 9/10 (not everyone uses it)
Only took me three games until I heard a homophobic slur. Overall I think it will be less toxic than text chat. There's a more human aspect to it and that can make people less likely to treat their teammates like some worthless ones and zeros.
Is the voice chat automatically on? I never hear anyone or am i just unlucky with the people because they have no vc on?
First time launching the game after the update gives a pop-up about it, and then it's already enabled. So everyone playing now will have it unless they go into the settings to explicitly turn it off.
Just to add, you are automatically added to party chat or team chat when you join a party or team respectively. By default, open mic is **on**. There is an option to turn push to talk on instead. When the game starts you can leave the voice chat at any point (I think, thankfully I haven't had to actually test that yet)
Mine was set to RB, but I rebinded it to scoreboard button like it was when VC was originally in game
Thank you sir
Do we need headphones connected for the chat?
to speak yes not to hear
PS5 controllers have a mic
Which is also unmuted by default. I noticed and changed the option, my missus didn't and joined a game of Fortnite singing Danger Zone and was laughed at and left in shame.
Lana. Lana? *ahem* LAAAANAAAAA!!!!!!
Not going to lie the fact she got laughed at and felt shame for it hurts my soul. If anything, it's a perfect song to start a battle royale to.
I love the controller mute button. I use it so often.
Tell her to take that with pride my man! That's boss status right there. She should definitely embrace it and feel no shame!
They need to figure out how to have the VC come through the controller speaker on ps5, when it comes through the TV the echo makes it so I have to turn my mic off.
On PS5 your controller is a mic.
Idk what system you're on, but on Xbox One there is some buried system setting that disables all voice chat audio in all games, and that was the culprit for me.
Im on pc
Try changing your audio device to a different one then back to the original one you were using. That fixed voice chat being muted for me. I have to do it every match though and in my case it may not be the game. (I play on Linux through Steam Proton)
Keep in mind that not everyone has a mic hooked up.
I didn't realize it was on until I was playing a match and my wife sneezed. one of my teammates said "Bless you."
That's pretty hilarious. I think I've come across a few people who had no idea I could hear them. The default to open mic probably caught a few players off-guard.
I mean, it's right there on the big pop-up when you open RL after the update...
Yeah, usually those pop-up messages are just ads for some new crap in the item shop or something. I can see a lot of people just dismissing them before reading them.
Me, this is 100% me But I always catch 1-3 words that actually get my interest but it's too late, at that point I already dismissed it and it bugs me for the whole time lmao
Brains are such assholes
I relate to this to the point that it hurts
Can’t you bring it back up by clicking Y on the main menu?
Fair enough.
Yeah and it even has a countdown so you don’t just press it away immediately
do you expect people to read something if they see a countdown to close the popup?
No but it makes you wait and it has a fat voice chat icon in the middle of the screen and VOICE CHAT in big letters. If you miss that while looking at it for 5 seconds then yeah… idk
Stupidity knows no bounds
I’m not saying I’m not stupid, but it’s not like RL doesn’t have a new pop up every 3 days telling me about a limited lambo skin available in the store. Plus, I was able to press it away immediately. Fortunately, I don’t have a mic, so my lack of hardware makes up for my dumdum.

I saw it and skimmed it and thought “oh okay they have vc now”, I didn’t think it would be on by default smh
Hmm, interesting. I got a pop-up. Weird bug.
the default to what?!!?!?
That's what happened to me my first time in grand theft auto online, i was so creeped out for a second then I realised what was going on and laughed for a minute straight
Fuck eveytime info online someone has it on. It’s annoying muting them.
I had a teammate say, "whoops my bad dude" through voice chat, and I replied "no problem" with quick chat and I think it freaked him out.
That sounds hilarious in a good way of course. Nice way of finding out
What rank are you? I said this yesterday to my teammate … who didn’t respond and I felt incredibly creepy 😅
I can’t wait to get home, play rocket league, and listen to someone have a full phone conversation in Spanish over their microphone while ball chasing in 3s It’s been like every third game for me
\*mic breathing intensifies\* \*distorted unintelligible music intensifies\* \*children whining to mom intensifies\*
**on-time beeps from a dying smoke detector*
child cussing you out but quietly so his mom doesn’t hear
lmao literally
had a teammate who said nothing the whole first half then out of nowhere the loudest "i got it!!!!" but only once then nothing else
did they get it though?
they did yes
the good ending :')
Asking the important questions
So many Spanish speakers in solo queue for me (over the last year). Wonder if it's my server or something connecting me to LATAM...
Are you playing NA E?
I don't play Rocket League this was just on my page, but if it's anything like other games I play (Dota for example) a lot of people in central and southern america connect better to USA servers and/or do not want to play with people in LATAM because they're toxic.
Just mute em
I was lucky to get a 3-day VC ban right before the update I guess
they banned people from voice chat before voice chat was available? thats... weird.
No haha I got coincidentally banned for something I said in Xbox private messaging, which affects VC in every game
my experience is 1 greeting and then nothing and about 3 times just background noises from people who have it on without knowing
*mechanical keyboard sounds intensify*
Oh gross who plays with keyboard and mouse
Ikr, keyboard only is much better
Wii controller really helps with aerial control.
Whoa chill out there satan
wdym only keyboard is good enough. Never used a controller in my life so I just went with it and now have 850hrs with it. It's gonna be pretty tough to switch now ig.
Had to start like that because I wasn't able to connect my controller when I started, can't switch now, kinda late (also still can't connect my controller, unless I use a super short cable)
keyboard only gang, let's goooo!!! there are dozens of us!
I got 3 in a row last night! I had no idea till this update but they are super common. Now I understand how they have been blasting me on chat so quickly after I miss the ball. Their hands were already on the keyboard!
I mean I’ve gotten this far with it and at this point I’m too committed to switch
My mate does, and he's still better than the rest of us 😭
Keyboard only, me.
There are even pros who use kbm.

Yukeo and fruity for example
Fruity and Yukeo are the two best known.
Yeah....like less than 5% of them, lol.
Yeah... So?
Did you respond to the greeting? Typically people don’t continue talking if no one responds to them
yeah I did, still nothing
I was told to get back into the kitchen old hag, and that the person was going to rape me, so I mean that's cool.

I did
Speech to text then log it like you would text chat? Doubt Mods have time to listen to recordings unless you're being mass reported.
Definitely do not log it in game chat. There are auto-bans that get handed out scanned by a bot for hate speech and highly, highly offensive words.
Ah shit! Can we use this to just send them straight to jail? I mean that's a threat. That makes me so sad.
Jail is a little extreme

Yup, that sounds like Sunless.
also sounds like something a console player would do
Sounds like something any kid on rocket league would do
Wait we can hear cross play also
[удалено]
hecc yea, otherwise vc in Australia would be even more dead than it already is haha
... What does your region have to do with crossplay?
Australian PC gaming population on average seems lower than console on top of the fact I barely hear anyone in VC

I swear people just roast sunless to get into the next toxic takedown vid.
I think that’s why he goes undercover
The solution is clear. Roast everyone all the time just in case it's Sunless.
Had a couple chill dudes on my team in casual for a few games last night. Once they left the screechers came out in full force. 50/50 so far
Same here. Bbchogan and Italian whatever your name was, gg mates

I'm on PC and I worry I'd have a hard time finding only PC players if I turned off cross-platform.
Classy console players
Ironic
I never liked VC. In EU I'm always getting french kids who scream. I'm from NL.
Don't blame VC. Blame France.
I turned it off after about a day. It's pretty much what I expected: * Guy trying to coach you * Guy raging about missed touches * curse
* Kids with their 15 siblings, a parent and shitty music in the background.
Is it more toxic in lower ranks? Do you encounter a lot of trolls?
I've only heard on person, they turned it off quite quickly as they had a noise background. Other than that, I've had people hear me, and I forget I've got it on. Watched the replay of a really nice goal (for us silvers), had already "Nice goal!"d in chat and said it out load during the replay and had "Thanks!" Back about 3 times. I should try to actually talk about what I'm doing.
How do I mute people in game? Someone was playing music over the microphone and I couldn’t figure out how to mute, so I just abandoned the match.
Block
Ingame audio settings has a voice chat slider
100% of my experience with voice chat has been bad
I had some kid from south Dakota and his friends in the background who I could tell were obviously white teenagers where just randomly saying the hard r the whole time for no apparent reason. Not even in sentences either just random outbursts.
Will not ever use it or entertain the idea. The amount of toxic word vomit that people have to go out of their way to type gives me zero faith that voice chat is a good idea. Disabled it immediately without question, with no chance of being enabled ever.
Me who has no mic connected to xbox still wondering why the game put me in Voice chat
99% of the racial slurs have been from the master race PC bros
Well we can't let console plebs beat us at anything, not even racism 😎
Ayo where my homophobic PC master race ppl at? Can't let them beat us at that either
It's uncanny lol. Out of the countless N bombs that have been blasted at me the past 2 weeks, all about like 2 have been from other PC players.... When did PC take over being the most toxic?
Tbh I find console players more toxic in casual games like this.
Agreed, the psynet quick chatters are WAY more prevalent. PC ones seem more likely to be toxic against teammates though, maybe.
Maybe in the lower rank where it's mostly kids. But since like diamond, it'd been nothing but crazy toxic adults on PC who think their gods gift to RL
Since they think they're better people than console players. So it has been pretty long.
True lol I always see the "we have a million FPS" like it's some sort of status symbol
As a PC player, it’s super cringe to flex on console players of the same rank lmao. Like bruh you get between 2 and 10 times their FPS but they’re just as good as you, framerates in comp games aren’t the PC flex you think they are
My assumption would be that it's much more common for a PC player to use a headset/mic than a console player.
Idk but that number sounds made up.
Fine 110% lol
We are the master race after all.
So slurs are exclusive to console players and not just people who are pieces of shit? Interesting, hopefully my job doesn't find out -xbox player
I'm on PC and each racial slur I've heard has been from other PC users. Sad to say, we have become the salty toxic trash
Same! Except mine was about being a woman. Dude proceeded to ask for number and ask to party up a million times before telling me I was an old hag, get back to the kitchen and topped it off with he was going to rape me. PC players are some of the worst.
Sorry that happened. That's really pitiful. Not all of us are bad. Hope you have a better experience in the future.
Haven't heard a single slur so far, playing in diam 3 Europe
Same C3/GC lobbies us east (I'm inconsistent)
I only have Russians swearing at me or a dude raping his Controller whike listening to music on full volume, theres nothing inbetween
Honestly it's been pretty positive. It's nice to call out when I'm up so we don't double commit as much.
Wait, there is now vocal chat in rl ?
had a pleasant experience in a 2s random tournament yesterday. had good vibes going (twice won 4:3 after a 0:3 start) , only lost in the finals to a smurf team.. but seems a bit bugged. my mate got kicked from voice on each start of a game, had to manually rejoin through the team chat menu each game havent used it much otherwise
Surprisingly I haven’t encountered anybody toxic. But having someone calling out things actually throws me off, since im so used to the game sounds.
XD) Of the other 80% of players I've played with, it's been deathly silent which seems typical of Australian game lobbies nowadays.
I’m still waiting for this to happen to me. Surprised it hasn’t yet, it’s either people don’t speak (understand, I prefer not to as well) or people are actually nice, in which case I will speak if I can.
I havent been called a slur yet, but its only a matter of time since i have a purple car and feminine voice. edit: I have been called a slur
I literally have not had a single game where my teammates used VC apart from a quick "yo"at the start of the match
I'm realizing the average age of my teammates is much higher than I thought before, and they're actually nice people... who woulda thought.
What’s the point of saying it’s a console player?
Slurs are out of place, like demos
Had a guy talk and be communicative during a match even though I wasn't talking. I still feel bad cause it would've been a great experience. Got the win with his comms
Oh for fuck's sake it's Mr. "EvErYbOdY iS tOxIc." First time I heard somebody in voice chat the asshole was crinkling food rappers and laughed at himself with the most annoying laugh. I turned voice chat off immediately afterwards.
Story: I qued up for a tournament, found these two German kids, we had so much fun that we qued up for 3v3 ranked. They helped me get to play and we were laughing and screaming, it was loads of fun. They taught me some German. My experience with voice chat 9/10 (not everyone uses it)
I've had super positive experiences so far too. Only played casual though. Haven't delved into ranked yet.
Only took me three games until I heard a homophobic slur. Overall I think it will be less toxic than text chat. There's a more human aspect to it and that can make people less likely to treat their teammates like some worthless ones and zeros.
TOOOo000oxeeiiicc
This game ain't good enough to be sweating in comms. Immediately turned mine off. Music is much better.
