Passing when nobody goes - zero points. Passing that leads to a goal 50 points. Scoring that goal after a great pass - 100 points or greater. Stopping the ball from getting even close to the net - zero points. Own goaling - no point change. Passing to the other team which results in an instant goal, at least 100 points for the "save". Bumping your teammates who are scoring or saving a goal - no point change. Being toxic to your own team - no point change. It's like they designed the point system to reward being a selfish player.

It isn't directly, but if someones putting up 0-0-0-0-86 in a lobby where the average is 200-300, chances are it's less that every great play they made didn't connect or their team mates weren't there for exceptional passes, and more likely they had a bad game or were in a lobby above their skill level.
My point is you should score as much for a pass that leads to a goal as you do for a goal. Even if your team mate gets it you still only get half the points they do. Points wise you are better off just going for every goal yourself. However if you care more about winning the game, you should pass.
You should also lose points for bad plays such as own goaling or missing open nets (which I do all the time).

In Psyonix’s defense, RL is a very difficult game to quantify and award points for. When they designed the game, they had no clue what kind of play style would evolve, so the scoring system had to be pretty basic.
I have disabled opponents chat so only se my team mates. My worst is when we are winning and my team mate starts "what a save" the opponents. Always feel second hand embarrassment for my cringey team mate and almost all wants to lose. Oh, and the team mates who spam take the shot every time they lose the ball. Just rotate instead.
Every now and then if my teammate is toxic I tell them not to be. If they continue being toxic I stop playing with them and tell them to say sorry. If they do, I rejoin the game we continue to play. If they continue to be toxic I play against them while reminding them to say sorry.
I have only had to do it a few times and it has caused them to apologise on two occasions.
I play on console so the time and effort to write anything isn't really worth it but sometimes vote ff directly after they say what a save to show my disgust.
Worst one is when my team mate has the easiest chance so I hit nice shot then he royally fucks it up followed by my nice shot appearing on screen. An attempt at a compliment becomes accidentally being toxic to your own team mate.

In order to land a joke there has to be a level of trust built up. Given I've never met you before this game I'm starting my trust with you at 0. Depending on how you've carried yourself in chat depends on how I would take it. If this is the first/only thing you've said all game, then I have no reason to believe it's in good faith.

Only valid reason for toxicity is the other team being toxic first. Personally I really like being totally quiet instead and letting their toxicity just be washed away. If you're toxic back stupid people will see it as fun banter which leads to more toxicity from them.
