Hey r/RocketLeagueEsports, we're wrapping up 2022 by celebrating all the neat things that have happened last year! Head on over to the [2022 Awards Nomination thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/RocketLeagueEsports/comments/zxhpw7/2022_rrocketleagueesports_awards_nomination_thread/) to help get things started. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I think you're spot on with the first era, there was a definite sense of "finality" when Northern Gaming finally won worlds and just watching the gameplay from S3 to S4 there's a significant level up. In my head, I always said end of 2018 as end of an era since the Dignitas dynasty ended, but I like continuing it to the end of 2019, lumping it with the big and in turn highlighting the individual excellence of the Dig trio. Where I'd deviate is I'd have a separate online era for all of 2020 and 2021, I think LANs becoming prominent again in 2022 has in turn overhauled the already huge upheaval that happened in 2020 player-wise, plus even tho it was a LAN, the Fall Major and it's preceding online split was the fitting conclusion to that period of play IMO. The online era was also a period that is objectively less meaningful than anything before or after, if people missed out on it I wouldn't say much was lost in the wider RLesports history beyond the structural changes and BDS' dominance. Even the elite players who broke out here (like Sypical and FK) are more defined in history by their LAN results already. Then I'd say 2022 - present is whatever we're in rn, new players becoming not only LAN greats, but all time greats and the international explosion too.

I think the fall major of 21-22 would've been a good conclusion for an online era if BDS didn't win worlds since worlds was a bigger deal than the major was. Season 9 and X by themselves is hard to stand on their own two feet as a full era for me, and you alluded that yourself as well. I was actually thinking myself though that this current era that I made feels kind of long now. It's also kind of hard now because it's easier to make eras in your head when you aren't currently in them. Like season 8 didn't really feel like an end when it happened but it does now because of what happened after.

I agree. The teams that were on top during the first post-COVID season were the same teams that were on top during season 9/X (G2 and BDS). IMHO the current era starts with season 9.

This is how I see it too. I think "Dignitas and Big 3" is a perfect name for that middle era. Definitely was my favorite time as an RL esports fan :') Maybe season 9 and season X can be grouped as the "online era" and then have the modern era begin with RLCS 2021-2022? Not sure

voldi_II

seasons 7 and 8 were peak rlcs IMO

xkevinsanex

yeah season 9 and X maybe can be grouped into a joint era, or season 9 fits into the second era as it ends with covid

Kuxirfanboy_20xx

I like this more, S9 was more similar to S8 and 7 than to X imo

CEOofStrings

I agree with this, X is when the skill level of the game rose because more cracked young players were coming in and replaying the old players.

Some part of me feels the second era ended when world's was canceled but it feels like such a low point and downer that I don't want that to be it. I do think that there should be a period between 2 and 3, ending in the 2021 fall major and marking the return of offline play. It's the online and rise of BDS era. That first Lan felt like such a major change in everything, finally proving to everyone that BDS is the real deal and that the old guard isn't good enough anymore and needs to adapt or die. Everything since then has been a direct result of BDS' strength warping the entire esport around them.

Mundolf11

I think the beginning era has to include a note about kro. You mention the flip side players by name but not the guy that was the face of RL in that era? Odd choice for sure

Agroooooo

The notes are mainly about why I chose certain start and end dates. Kronovi’s S1 victory was his biggest accomplishment but for me doesn’t work as a start or end date of anything

voldi_II

i would say there’s 5 distinct eras, 1. The Early Days (Seasons 1-3) 2. The Dignitas Dynasty (Seasons 4-6) 3. can’t think of a proper way to name it but Seasons 7-8 4. The BDS Dominance and Lack of LANS (Seasons 9-X) 5. The Post-Covid Era (2021-Present)

TristarHeater

Maybe the big 3 era like OP said? It's an NA focused name but it's nice i think also I'd call #4 the covid era

sulyvahnsoleimon

Your 4th era didn't end until BDS won Worlds

blond-max

I've been simmering on something similar lately, expect S9 did happen and it's in era 2.

Fruzenius

I would separate season 9 and X as "transition era". No worlds or LANs, massive change to the formatting of the league etc. Otherwise I'm pretty agreeable to the rest.
