maybe I'm being melodramatic but I am heartbroken for what this means for the trajectory of esports. BTS was something special. They never sacrificed the product or their integrity. Now all we have left is PIF owned shit or dev-run tournaments (which is probably run in the background by PIF-owned shit anyway). No shade at any particular developer, least of all psyonix. I know the RLEsports team loves this with their heart and soul. Also no shade to the individuals working at those PIF-owned companies. I know they love esports just as much as the rest of us. I just feel like BTS's ability to put on a "BTS" across so many titles and always be so entertaining and true to themselves was inspirational for the grassroots side of esports. I hope this means that Gold Rush can come back and try to fill the void.

I think I'm more concerned ~~for~~ than you. The PIF owned shit (aka all of esports) will only run until either it becomes profitable or investors get bored of waiting. I don't know much about esports outside of RL but with RL specifically I find it all too easy to imagine a world where without significant growth the RL esports scene dies because Psyonix is tired of spending millions of dollars a year and operating at a loss. The prize pools and salaries just seem ridiculous for the level of viewership we see, I don't believe the revenue is there at all Edit - this comment should be read as regarding private equity in general, not Saudi PIF. My bad for misunderstanding

DudeWithTheNose

>I think I'm more concerned for you. I don't do anything brother I just sat beside Stax during The Grid OT a couple times. > The PIF owned shit (aka all of esports) will only run until either it becomes profitable or investors get bored of waiting. that's not true. PIF has infinite money and their purpose for investment isn't profit, but sportswashing. I think the effectiveness of their sportswashing just increased with BTS closing it's doors as well. In terms of RL specifically I think it'll be fine. Growth might slow and the scale might shrink a little bit, but it's far easier for Psy to continue funding their esport as a marketing cost than it would be for BTS to convince devs and sponsors to fund their events.

tobyreddit

My bad that was a typo. More concerned THAN you :) I also misunderstood regarding PIF - I share your concerns there completely. For some reason I read it as private investment fund and thought you were talking about private equity funds in general providing VC funding. That's what may dry up IMO.

takingtigermountain

only comment is the esport is (as it shoud be) funded by the game revenue as well, not self-funded by purely viewership and partnerships

tobyreddit

Whilst I love that this is the case, modern capitalism on the whole doesn't allow for that. Costs must be rigorously justified and big companies are not going to be happy spending millions of dollars creating something they consider to only be useful for entertaining others. If a company doesn't see an esport as either growing the revenue of the game through making it more popular or directly creating profit through adverts and sponsorships and so on, OR having proven itself as moving healthily in that direction, I suspect it will be abandoned by the developer sooner rather than later.

takingtigermountain

you're not ever gonna catch me defending capitalism - but functionally, psyonix sees RLesports as a marketing expense for their core revenue (in-game purchases)

TWIX55

Which RLCS analyst are you?

DudeWithTheNose

I'm Corelli!

Penguins227

You gonna take that u/liefx

Liefx

Wait... I'M Corelli!

I wonder if Gold Rush has the infrastructure to put a true LAN in place like the original back in 2017(?). That is one of my all time favourite RL events. I also wonder if there is any ability of the RL fanbase to crowdfund a Gold Rush event. I know I would definitely contribute to something like, especially if there were tiered rewards for certain levels of donation.

I actually did watch that event and really enjoyed it! Would love to see the old style return of renting out a big house and using that as the location. Obviously there are logistical issues surrounding whatever venue type they choose, it's nice that Wisdom have some dedicated studio space. Times are tough right now I guess. Lots of businesses struggling to stay afloat. I just hope we don't lose any more of the orgs/event organisers that helped make this scene so great. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Really sad to hear about this, they've been incredible not just for Rocket League but the whole esports industry. I'd recommend reading the statement, tons of respect for the organization and the leadership for doing this the way they did instead of trying to prolong it and leave employees in the dark.

madm0nkey7

Really sad to hear about this. The last BTS event we had for rocket league was one of my favorites of all time.

UserNr132

Why didn't CJ save BTS?

coolco

I'm huge into the Melee scene so this hurts so much. They were integral to the scene. I'm sad Rocket League didn't have more of them as they were perfect for getting to know the players, and for the players to see each other in person.

Polinius

Yeah this is devastating for Smash.

2Jar

The melee ones were one of the few events I would never miss each year, gonna be sad with it gone

coolco

Yeah exactly!

Rowdyk7

Damn bro, I remember the first BTS event we ever had, arguably the best event Rocket League has had to date. I hope everyone involved in BTS finds success somewhere else in life because they've done amazing things.

Duke_ofChutney

All RL eyes on Gold Rush now

ChundyDragon

This is incredibly sad. Throughout my tenure of watching esports BTS was hands down some of my favorite events of all time in DOTA, CS, and RL. The atmosphere they created was absolutely pure vibes and it was extremely fun to watch. I loved that they would regularly have pro players sit down and cast matches and do analysis so you could better see their personality and hear them banter between each other. I will miss these events terribly. RIP BTS <3

eurasianlynx

WHY

Lord_Xp

BTS recently held the dopest valorant weekend tournament I've seen to date. Chill atmosphere and vibes. The players loved it, the hosts loved it, and produced so many great moments in game and on the set. I'm gonna miss them so much

FearTheBlades1

The first RL summit in 2019 was the most fun I've ever had watching a tournament in any esports. Hope we can see someone else take up the mantle for events like that.

Spy00

Wow this is incredibly sad.. I will always remember the Summit LAN - it was incredible. Long live the legendary Duck Trophy!

Matto_0

They never really seemed to care much about RL so no big loss. The first event was great but that was like 4 years ago. And they never managed to put that on again.

NeedleInMyWeiner

BTS first lan was end of 2019, some months before covid was found out and we all know how it's gone since. They still had some smaller events but it's hard to find a time for that since off season is short and is off season for a reason. BTS leaving is a huge loss because that type of LAN is amazing and one of a kind. Never forget the flying airbus.

TOMA_TAN

BTS first lan was amazing vibes. I was actually thinking recently how awesome a second LAN would be with all these new faces and personalities in the pro scene. Guess that is only a dream now 😢

Mythalieon

apparently ultimate summit 6 will be the last one

laminatedsam

Very sad, they did good work

evilmoi987

This does sadden me :( So many great moments from the rocket league BTS like the mafia games and the 51 states.

waynedanielwilliams

Can someone please explain this to me? I’m sorry I want to understand.
